S&ERFC v Brighton (06.12.25)

Welcome to S&ERFC

Welcome to S&ERFC’s match-day programme, now produced in digital format.

The warmest of welcomes from S&ERFC to all those participating in or attending this match in the Regional 2 South East league.

The 2025-26 season brings a range of fixtures, several with old friends and rivals, others with new clubs whom we have not met at 1st XV level before. But wherever they hail from, and whoever they are, our opponents and all visitors will always be warmly greeted at Rugby Lane.

Last season was particularly enjoyable with plenty of very closely-contested matches for the men’s 1st XV. Ultimately, they finished in a creditable fourth place, with the women’s 1st XV finishing eighth in Championship South 1. At our level, league rugby is highly competitive, and is bound to become more so as the season progresses.

The Minis and Juniors section, both male and female, continue to thrive. The legacy of Jamie Paxton, whose vision and foresight led to the founding of this section, is there to be marvelled at every Sunday, and the vibrancy and enthusiasm these young players (and their parents!) generate gives the Club a real ‘buzz’.

We are also delighted to welcome back our friends from the visually impaired sector, whose skill, dedication, and evident enjoyment prove (if proof were needed) that rugby really is a game for all.

No club of our size and status could survive in the modern age without the support of sponsors. Some of our sponsors are represented by advertisements in this programme. Foremost amongst them is our headline sponsor: MB Associates, the company whose Managing Director is the redoubtable Monica Bradley. The Club is very grateful to all its sponsors for their continuing support – and I take the opportunity to remind all members that sponsorship is a two-way street: the more business Club members give to our sponsors (often on advantageous terms), the more that entrenches the relationship between the sponsors and the Club – to the advantage of both.

So, welcome once again. Let season 2025-26 be a season to remember at S&ERFC – for all the right reasons!

Headline sponsor’s message

We are again delighted to be supporting S&ERFC in our ninth year as the headline sponsor.

Our ongoing partnership with the club is a constant source of pride, both for myself and my team. To be a part of something that is such a cornerstone of the local community and is so inclusive, on so many different levels, is indeed a real privilege.

As a business based in Cheam Village which has traded in Surrey for nearly twentyfive years, we share many of S&ERFC’s values. Therefore, it’s a great pleasure to be involved again this year, both from a sponsorship perspective but also with members of our staff yet again playing for some of the senior teams.

Wishing everyone at the club all the best for the 2025-26 season, and of course enjoying some outstanding rugby in the coming months!

Sutton through the Ages

The Sutton & Epsom club – just Sutton until the reorganisation of London in 1971, is one of the oldest clubs in England. The original club was formed in 1871, the year of the RFU’s foundation, and although Sutton’s forefathers disbanded a few years later, many of those pioneers joined forces with rugby enthusiasts in the Sutton Bicycle Club to bring rugby back to Sutton. And that is the club we know today. It was the autumn of 1880 and the club first took the field under the banner of Sutton Bicycle Club (Football Section) – hence the iconic and much-loved symbol of the pennyfarthing.

And Sutton Football Club, as it soon became known, were quick to stamp their name on the football map, not only in the local area, but throughout the metropolis. Under the initial leadership of Yorkshireman Herbert Hooper, and later boosted by the arrival of international forwards Alfred Allport and George Fraser (the former Sutton born and bred) and a glittering array of backs, Sutton became a major force, capable of meeting and beating the likes of Saracens, Wasps and London Welsh, and even crossing the English Channel to beat the French Champions Stade Français in Paris. Thousands would flock to Grove Road, where a Sutton defeat was something of a rarity. Especially prized was the Surrey Challenge Cup, in which Sutton enjoyed a four-year stretch without defeat and once conceded not a single point in their triumphant cup run. One triumph coincided with the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earls Court in 1901, and there on a plinth in the Great Hall was the Surrey Cup itself, with Sutton’s name engraved upon it, alongside the Calcutta Cup recently won by England.

The Great War brought an end to Sutton’s dominance on the field – but not the growth of the club itself. The present Cuddington Court clubhouse was purchased in 1937 and the club resolutely stayed afloat during the war years, taking on the All Black and Wallaby inspired Royal Australian and New Zealand Services XV stationed in England. The president of the RFU opened the War Memorial stand in 1961 and within 30 years additional pitches had been purchased at Priest Hill, just half a mile away, reflecting the growth in playing numbers.

By 1987 leagues were upon us and it was a proud boast that Sutton, who had been placed in level five London One, retained their place in the top regional division for fully 18 years. There was also another period of dominance in the revived Surrey Cup, with seven cup triumphs in eleven appearances in the final. By 2019 Sutton had advanced to the National League Division Two. However, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and the club are now plying their trade in Regional 2 South East this season.

Such is the vibrant state of Sutton rugby today that it can now claim the distinction of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, with over 2,000 playing and social members. It can put up to 25 sides in the field every weekend, with minis from U5 to U11, youth sides for boys and girls from U12 to U18, a flourishing Womens XV, competing in the Women’s Championship South 1, and five men’s sides, including the flagship 1st XV, whose achievements over the past few seasons have been among the finest in a history spanning 140 years.

We are reminded of those words of another Sutton scribe, who wrote: “We have in our hands a precious legacy… it isn’t ours to keep, but it is something to make the most of when it is our turn and cherish, sustain and strengthen for future generations.”

The Rapid Round Up

ROUND 9

22nd November 2025

Beckenham 35 Battersea Ironsides 24

Fourth hosted fifth at Balmoral Avenue. The Ironsides had the chance to swap places with Beckenham. The opportunity was not taken and the loss sent Battersea tumbling down the table to seventh.

Dartfordians 11 Gravesend 15

The hosts took an early lead through winger Joe Scott before Stan Dadson levelled it for the visitors. Jarleth Heatherington and Josh Barnes traded penalties and nothing separated the teams at the break as they turned around 8-8. Another Heatherington penalty saw Dartfordians leading until the final five minutes. A fine solo effort by centre Zac Filmer put Gravesend ahead and Josh Barnes’ conversion put the final gloss on their 15-11 win.

Old Colfeians 22 Brighton 28

Blues fly-half Maxx Morris skipped through the defence to open the scoring. OCs reply was swift from winger Reigan Johnson who crossed the whitewash for the first time. A stunning score sweeping the length of the pitch extended the leaders’ advantage to 14-5. Once more Colfeians hit back with Freddie Holland-Oliver touching down before the half-time whistle for 14-12 at the break. Winger Mylo Mutongwizo’s try sent Horn Park into raptures. However, Brighton showed why they are on top of the pile with two quick scores. Johnson’s second try earned the hosts two valuable bonus points in the 22-28 loss.

Old Reigatian 10 Bromley 33

No doubt the Reigatian coaches are struggling as hard to find words to boost their team as scribes are to find synonyms to winless.

Sidcup 35 Canterbury II 0

Sidcup set themselves up in the perfect fashion for next week’s clash with the league leaders with a very comfortable bonus point win with the added boost of keeping a clean sheet. For the Pilgrims it was the end of their three-game winning streak.

ROUND 10

29th November 2025

Brighton 29 Sidcup 27

The clash between the top two in the league did not disappoint. Once again winger Tyrone Makasi was in top form for the leaders with two more tries to add to his personal tally. But Sidcup pushed the Blues all the way in a contest worthy of the occasion.

Bromley 0 Old Colfeians 0

What a joyous final score as a counterblast to the gluttony of the try-laden fixtures of the modern era. It was greeted by many of the younger element with confusion thinking it was either a typographical error or an indication that the game had not been played. Then they were informed by elderly statesmen that 0-0 was a possible score in rugby.

Dartfordians 26 Old Reigatian 14

For Old Reigatian another week, another defeat - different opposition but the same outcome. Messrs Kpaka, Chapman, Rackley and Whyte were the benefactors to provide Dartfordians with a bonus point win.

Gravesend 57 Battersea Ironsides 15

Gravesend made light of the testing conditions in an 8-try rout of the Ironsides. The glory was spread around but man-of-the-match Ben Hope collected a brace in a comprehensive win. With Old Reigatian next in their sights the Rectory Field fans will expect a handsome addition in the ‘Points For’ column.

Horsham 22 Beckenham 19

In a weekend of many close encounters Horsham edged out Beckenham and in doing so reduced the gap between the two clubs to a solitary point.

Kyren may not have come through one of the traditional routes of an eminent local rugby school to the Sutton & Epsom 1st XV. However, he migrated from Old Caterhamians minis to join the Black & Whites to enjoy great success with the prolific unbeaten U16s. He has always had an impressive turn of speed that made him the county 200m silver medallist. The Surrey rugby coaches came knocking and U16 caps against Hampshire and Middlesex ensued.

Following Sutton’s only season in Level 7 the Black & Whites were enduring an inauspicious return to London 1 South in 2013-4. With the campaign drawing to a conclusion Kyren made his debut off the bench at Chichester. From those early appearances it was obvious S&E had an exciting wing with great potential. He broke his scoring duck the following campaign with a duo at Gosport & Fareham. A fortnight later the 1st XV were at Crescent Farm and the travelling supporters knew they had a special talent. Frankie Murray floated a sumptuous kick to the flank near halfway, Kyren rose mightily into the afternoon sky, landed with a pirouette escaping the clutches of the defender and ran in the try that resulted in the first time Sutton & Epsom had ever won away at the league leaders in their league history.

A decade ago Paul Hodgson was conducting affairs on the pitch as Sutton won the Level 6 title scoring 853 points with 121 tries. Kyren, with 16 tries was part of a lethal triumvirate with Messrs Whitaker (24) and Phillip (16) who ran defences ragged all seaswon. There followed the Golden Year of 2018-9 when Sutton secured the National League 3 title and he was the leading try scorer. In the pantheon of leading league try scorers he is in fourth place with only the legendary trio of Geoff Green, Keith Middleton and Matt Whitaker ahead of him.

Throughout his career Kyren has always had enthusiastic family support on the sidelines both home and away. At first it was mother Jill but the Kyren Ghumra Supporters Club has expanded over the years. Now his wife Shamima, daughter Reya, sister India and niece Asantewaa enthusiastically follow him around the circuit. However, it would be remiss of me not to mention Brighton in October 2021. The appropriately named Waterhall was turning into a lake, the rain was torrential, the freezing wind was gusting at 40mph and the match report recorded: “Only retired trawlermen, those testing allegedly waterproof clothing or concerned mothers would opt to spectate on the touchline. The sensible masses enjoyed the comfort of the excellent and wellappointed clubhouse with a perfect view of proceedings.”… Jill was the only supporter braving the elements.

Last Saturday at Canterbury he became the 12th player to reach the landmark of 150 1st XV league appearances and we look forward to him playing many more games, running in tries.

Focus on Brighton

This afternoon’s game is another meeting of two of the oldest clubs in the land. It is the oldest club fixture in Sutton history. Senior officers in the Field Artillery batteries at Preston barracks formed Brighton Shooflies in 1868. After 1873, having twice beaten their fierce local rivals the Brighton Wasps, they became known simply as Brighton FC. Our two clubs have been meeting each other almost continuously since the 19th Century. The match report of that first encounter is reproduce in this programme. This is a fixture that was only disrupted because of the expansion of the leagues. Our annual visit to Preston Park, the county cricket ground at Hove and Horsdean was invariably an end-of-season celebration and even included a lengthy spell as centrepiece of an Easter tour, which also took in Lewes and Worthing.

Sutton & Epsom v Brighton In the League Era

This Season

No doubt the pre-season clamour after a relegation is the importance of a rapid return to one’s former status. Though club pessimists will instantly fear it might be the start of a decline of the type that has been inflicted upon Streatham-Croydon. Brighton have certainly embraced the challenge as they supplanted Sutton in Round 7 to top the table after an emphatic 52-32 victory at Horn Park against Dartfordians. Only a narrow home loss on the opening day of the season against Beckenham has blemished a perfect record. They have shown their mettle with with a brace of two-point winning margins at Waterhall against Gravesend and Sidcup. With 393 points in ten outings they are the leading points’ scorers in the league with an impressive 175 garnered on their travels in four away days.

There is still a long way to go until the final game of the season on 11th April. Of course this season in their infinite wisdom the RFU have replaced the unloved Cup competition with the thrill of a play-off system that will extend until 9th May. Never has there been a greater incentive to win a league. Brighton may be one club that does not fear the promotion play-off scenario. In recent times they have gained ascent via a thrilling 33-26 play-off win at Mill Road against Colchester. The try-scoring triumvirate of Frank Taggart, Jordan Whyte and Dylan Winsloe, and the prodigious kicking of Sean O’Hagan with 18 points, gained their glory.

It is a great pleasure to host, once more, one of are oldest historical opponents.

The First Meeting

The Surrey Herald reported: “Supporters of the Sutton club were much indebted on Saturday last to the enthusiastic “Teddy,” who had arranged with the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway Company to issue tickets at 1s. for the return journey to London”. Teddy being the indefatigable EC Surridge.

The following is the Match Report for the first meeting on 9th October, 1897 at Preston Park.

Brighton 0 Sutton 13 (2 Goals & 1 Try)

The position of the Sutton football club having improved considerably of recent years, the executive have naturally sought to arrange matches with clubs of better standing than have hitherto appeared on their card, and on Saturday, for the first time, paid a visit to Brighton to meet the fifteen representing that popular town. Beautiful weather favoured the visit, and the Suttonians were accompanied by quite a large party of their supporters. The game took place in Preston Park before a large number of spectators, who swarmed all round the touch and dead ball lines. In the first half the visitors defended the north goal. For the first few minutes the play was confined to the mid-field neither side being able to claim any advantage. Sutton then made a steady advance, but on nearing the home twenty-five were pulled up by Parsons, who relieved with a long punt. Duckworth, by good play, enabled the home team to invade their opponents’ territory. Several scrummages ensued, and ultimately a penalty kick gave relief to Sutton. Neat passing was shown by Morrison and Gooch, and the home posts were neared, but the danger was averted. Cresswell and Pennell were also seen to advantage for the visitors, but Duckworth’s and Chapman’s defence was equal to the occasion. Duckworth again put in some sterling defence, but Sutton for some time kept up their pressure, vigorous play being shown by Gooch and Morrison. The tackling of the home team was, however, effective, though there defence was, at times, severely taxed. The Brighton twenty-five was invaded, but neat dribbling took the ball to mid-field. Sutton became aggressive again, and narrowly escaped getting behind. Half-time was called and neither side had scored. Changing ends, narrowly escaped getting behind for Sutton, and two minutes later Cox scored a try for that side, but Morrison failed in his place-kick. Starting afresh, Brighton, following up a long punt by Godfree, forged ahead, but were checked. Again aggressive, Sutton were once more seen to great advantage. Morrison, taking a pass from Cox, got behind, and Motion had no difficulty in realising the goal. Sutton maintained their pressure for some time, and though Brighton then made a run to the opposite end they failed to break through. Haycroft then gained possession for Sutton, and, making a long run, got behind, and Motion again placed a goal. Lane put in a good run, but was collared before getting dangerous, and mid-field was again the scene for hostilities. Brighton once more neared the Sutton goal-line, only, however, to be again disappointed, though Duckworth, Lane, and Godfree worked hard. Play was transferred to the Brighton end, and when the whistle sounded the score stood thus –Sutton, two goals one try (13 points); Brighton, nothing.

CALLING ALL S&ERFC MEMBERS DO

YOU PLAY GOLF?

The Magpies are Sutton & Epsom RFC’s very own Golfing Society and all club members automatically qualify as members. You don’t need any particular high level of golfing skill although a sense of humour and ability to ‘lunch’ well will help!

Come and join players, past and present, and enjoy your fantastically entertaining Golf Society – a warm welcome is assured. We have four meetings a year including the legendary Christmas meeting and Captain’s Away Day.

For further information contact:

Felix Symonds (Captain) 07976 062567 magpiesgolfsociety@gmail.com

Sponsorship

We are always looking for new business partners with whom we can build relationships for long-term mutual benefit.

In return, we can offer our sponsors a range of benefits, including opportunities to promote their business and their products, to generate direct sales via club membership and to entertain their clients, both at the club and at Twickenham.

We have a range of packages available to suit all budgets and objectives. For an initial discussion, without obligation, please contact:
