Welcome to S&ERFC’s match-day programme, now produced in digital format.
The warmest of welcomes from S&ERFC to all those participating in or attending this match in the Regional 2 South East league.
The 2025-26 season brings a range of fixtures, several with old friends and rivals, others with new clubs whom we have not met at 1st XV level before. But wherever they hail from, and whoever they are, our opponents and all visitors will always be warmly greeted at Rugby Lane.
Last season was particularly enjoyable with plenty of very closely-contested matches for the men’s 1st XV. Ultimately, they finished in a creditable fourth place, with the women’s 1st XV finishing eighth in Championship South 1. At our level, league rugby is highly competitive, and is bound to become more so as the season progresses.
The Minis and Juniors section, both male and female, continue to thrive. The legacy of Jamie Paxton, whose vision and foresight led to the founding of this section, is there to be marvelled at every Sunday, and the vibrancy and enthusiasm these young players (and their parents!) generate gives the Club a real ‘buzz’.
We are also delighted to welcome back our friends from the visually impaired sector, whose skill, dedication, and evident enjoyment prove (if proof were needed) that rugby really is a game for all.
No club of our size and status could survive in the modern age without the support of sponsors. Some of our sponsors are represented by advertisements in this programme. Foremost amongst them is our headline sponsor: MB Associates, the company whose Managing Director is the redoubtable Monica Bradley. The Club is very grateful to all its sponsors for their continuing support – and I take the opportunity to remind all members that sponsorship is a two-way street: the more business Club members give to our sponsors (often on advantageous terms), the more that entrenches the relationship between the sponsors and the Club – to the advantage of both.
So, welcome once again. Let season 2025-26 be a season to remember at S&ERFC – for all the right reasons!
John Hardy President

We are again delighted to be supporting S&ERFC in our ninth year as the headline sponsor.
Our ongoing partnership with the club is a constant source of pride, both for myself and my team. To be a part of something that is such a cornerstone of the local community and is so inclusive, on so many different levels, is indeed a real privilege.
As a business based in Cheam Village which has traded in Surrey for nearly twentyfive years, we share many of S&ERFC’s values. Therefore, it’s a great pleasure to be involved again this year, both from a sponsorship perspective but also with members of our staff yet again playing for some of the senior teams.
Wishing everyone at the club all the best for the 2025-26 season, and of course enjoying some outstanding rugby in the coming months!

The Sutton & Epsom club – just Sutton until the reorganisation of London in 1971, is one of the oldest clubs in England. The original club was formed in 1871, the year of the RFU’s foundation, and although Sutton’s forefathers disbanded a few years later, many of those pioneers joined forces with rugby enthusiasts in the Sutton Bicycle Club to bring rugby back to Sutton. And that is the club we know today. It was the autumn of 1880 and the club first took the field under the banner of Sutton Bicycle Club (Football Section) – hence the iconic and much-loved symbol of the pennyfarthing.
And Sutton Football Club, as it soon became known, were quick to stamp their name on the football map, not only in the local area, but throughout the metropolis. Under the initial leadership of Yorkshireman Herbert Hooper, and later boosted by the arrival of international forwards Alfred Allport and George Fraser (the former Sutton born and bred) and a glittering array of backs, Sutton became a major force, capable of meeting and beating the likes of Saracens, Wasps and London Welsh, and even crossing the English Channel to beat the French Champions Stade Français in Paris. Thousands would flock to Grove Road, where a Sutton defeat was something of a rarity. Especially prized was the Surrey Challenge Cup, in which Sutton enjoyed a four-year stretch without defeat and once conceded not a single point in their triumphant cup run. One triumph coincided with the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earls Court in 1901, and there on a plinth in the Great Hall was the Surrey Cup itself, with Sutton’s name engraved upon it, alongside the Calcutta Cup recently won by England.
The Great War brought an end to Sutton’s dominance on the field – but not the growth of the club itself. The present Cuddington Court clubhouse was purchased in 1937 and the club resolutely stayed afloat during the war years, taking on the All Black and Wallaby inspired Royal Australian and New Zealand Services XV stationed in England. The president of the RFU opened the War Memorial stand in 1961 and within 30 years additional pitches had been purchased at Priest Hill, just half a mile away, reflecting the growth in playing numbers.
By 1987 leagues were upon us and it was a proud boast that Sutton, who had been placed in level five London One, retained their place in the top regional division for fully 18 years. There was also another period of dominance in the revived Surrey Cup, with seven cup triumphs in eleven appearances in the final. By 2019 Sutton had advanced to the National League Division Two. However, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and the club are now plying their trade in Regional 2 South East this season.
Such is the vibrant state of Sutton rugby today that it can now claim the distinction of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, with over 2,000 playing and social members. It can put up to 25 sides in the field every weekend, with minis from U5 to U11, youth sides for boys and girls from U12 to U18, a flourishing Womens XV, competing in the Women’s Championship South 1, and five men’s sides, including the flagship 1st XV, whose achievements over the past few seasons have been among the finest in a history spanning 140 years.
We are reminded of those words of another Sutton scribe, who wrote: “We have in our hands a precious legacy… it isn’t ours to keep, but it is something to make the most of when it is our turn and cherish, sustain and strengthen for future generations.”

Due to the fixture list providing Sutton with back-to-back away days early in the campaign there are three rounds to review in this edition of the programme as the table transforms from its initial egg stage to larva stage in its seasonal metamorphosis. Beckenham, determined to convert a strong start into glory in April, were once again the early pacesetters as the only unbeaten side. That was until a dramatic Round Six when Sidcup followed up their win over S&E by inflicting the first loss of the campaign on Beckenham leaving Sutton on top as one of four clubs with 5 wins separated by a solitary point. Regional 2 South East is proving to be once more a highly competitive environment.
4th October 2025
Battersea Ironsides 36 Dartfordians 38
Dartfordians broke their duck in impressive style at Garratt Green. Of their six tries Stephen Garrett opened and closed their account, Miles Taylor added a brace whilst there were solitary excursions over the whitewash for Harvey Whyte and Harry Wright. The Man of the Match was flanker Joe Williams whose phenomenal work in attack and defence saw Dartfordians edge this thrilling encounter.
Beckenham 68 Old Reigatian 7
On paper this appeared to be the banker on the coupon for Round 4 as the leaders hosted the bottom club. So it proved to be a thoroughly one-sided affair as a ruthless Beckenham took advantage to improve their tally of points.
Canterbury II 17 Brighton 59
It is always interesting to see the match up between the recently relegated and the proudly promoted as this time last year two steps on the pyramid separated these clubs. However, Canterbury II were in the unusual position of having been denied promotion 12 months ago but the regulations were amended in the favour this season. A dominant performance by the visitors suggested there was a gulf in class.
Gravesend 5 Sidcup 41
Gravesend opted to play into the strong wind but their tactic misfired. Sidcup opened the scoring inside three minutes and Ben Hope’s levelling effort was the only impact made by the hosts on the scoreboard. Their situation was not helped when they were reduced to 13 men as the visitors scored 19 unanswered points to lead 24-5 at the break. In contrast, in the second period the men from Crescent Farm survived the handicap of 13 on the pitch without conceding. An impressive Sidcup, despite the wind, extended their advantage for a notable 41-5 victory.
Horsham 19 Bromley 51
Bromley travelled to the Coolhurst Ground on the back of a trio of tragedies but there had been mitigating circumstances with their pitch and first choice players being unavailable earlier on. The resounding triumph was particularly impressive as it was not only away from home but also against a team who had been playing in Level 5 the previous campaign. Limiting the hosts to a solitary Tom Whittaker try in the second period Bromley recorded a wonderful win to kick-start their campaign.
11th October 2025
Josh Barnes had levelled for the visitors before a Ben Hope brace and a try from Les Falefatu established a healthy cushion. In a thrilling contest Brighton won with the last play of the game to overturn a 24-7 deficit.
Two tries from Tom Mackenzie and one from Paddy Parker established a 22-12 lead and the prospect of the Pilgrims breaking their duck. Improving Bromley hit back to trail 24-25 at the break. Ultimately Canterbury had to console themselves with a bonus point try from AJ Masaka as two late penalty goals ensured Bromley ran out winners. Matt Corker Canterbury Coach explained the surprisingly poor start for his side: “We’re missing quite a lot of players, we have actually got 16 injured! That’s putting pressure on both squads –the first team and the Pilgrims.”
In a high-scoring encounter that saw six separate Dartfordians cross the whitewash they were usurped by a magnificent seven tries by Horsham. The hero of the hour was centre Tom Whittaker with a hat trick but fellow centre Tom Sanders was not far behind with two tries of his own.
Beckenham maintained their unbeaten start but failed to gain a bonus point the first time this campaign. Indeed the leaders were outscored 4-3 in terms of tries as Old Colfeians hooker Freddie Holland Oliver starred with two scores. However, a Jack Gurney double and a try from Kyrone Bennett plus a vital 18 points from the boot of Lewis Bunton kept them on top of the table.
The Old Boys came agonisingly close to their first win of the season but the Ironsides prevailed by a solitary point to maintain fifth place.

18th October 2025
The Ironsides lost at home to Old Colfeians who have enjoyed a far happier start to the campaign than last season.
Having downed S&E’s colours in the previous round, Sidcup took the prestigious scalp of Beckenham with a mightily impressive away win, knocking the hosts off the top spot.
Only a slightly inferior defensive record is keeping the Blues from the summit as they won a pulsating match against Bromley. It was a fine effort from the visitors considering the hosts were two leagues above them this time last year.
The Pilgrims have finally opened their account. Tries from Messrs Hetherington, Kpaka and Regnier were not enough to deny the hosts who will be hoping this will be the start of a period of onwards and upwards.
After being cruelly denied in Round 5 Old Reigatian were slaughtered in Round 6 by a rampant Horsham. Tom Whittaker scored a remarkable 5 tries in the 12-try rout. The relentless Sussex side led 33-7 at the break and did not let up. Head of Rugby Nick Stoker was effusive with praise: “When they click, they are a dangerous side and will cause teams problems.” No one from Old Reigatian would argue with that assessment.

Debut: 27th November 2021
Sutton & Epsom 14 Tring 31
O’Brien, Hurley (3p), Bushnell, Meeson, Matthews A, See ©, Parsons, Boaden, Farrell, Lloyd, Harwood, McTaggart, Cooksammy, Hegarty, Whitaker.
Reps: Halford, Jones (1t) & Clemett.
Epsom-born Dan first played rugby at Sutton & Epsom aged 3½ years. His senior debut, aged 17, was a typically old school affair having played for Glyn School in the morning he represented the Black & Whites 4th XV at fly-half in the afternoon. He is the very epitome of a homegrown talent.
He enjoyed a highly successful rugby career with Glyn School that culminated in 2019 with the National Schools Bowl Final. Dan was on the bench at the Sixways Stadium for the 34-10 defeat against King’s Worcester. There was some scant consolation for him as the match report wrote: “...substitute Daniel Jones scuttling through for their first points of the game”. As one would expect the school rugby ran parallel with Sutton commitments where he enjoyed great success alongside Messrs Bell, Bennion, Benton & Briggs who have all represented the senior XV at Rugby Lane. The age group were serial winners with trophy cabinets full to overflowing with Surrey Cup and Division One titles and culminating in back-to-back U22 cups in 2022 and 2023.
Sadly, university rugby was blighted by Covid and having transferred after his first year from Hartpury to St Mary’s he returned to S&E for his rugby. The disruption did not affect his academic aims as he achieved a first class degree in sports management. He made his first team debut in the post-pandemic season as, once again, he scuttled off the bench to score in a losing cause, this time, against Tring. Dan cemented his place in the line up last season not only appearing in every game but also being the top try-scorer in the campaign. He is a useful man to have in your team as he doubles as a flanker and a hooker with an all-action style that sees him making try-saving tackles at one end and scoring tries at the other. His excellent Sutton season was rewarded with a full Surrey cap.
As one would expect he has more than one string to his sporting bow. In stature he may not have much in common with erstwhile fellow front row Raynn Bruce but they share a sporting passion as both men have accomplished CVs as judo players. It is a sport that is well suited to the demands of rugby with arguably the best exponent being the legendary French prop Robert Paparemborde who dominated scrummaging from 1975 to 1983.
He has a fine sporting pedigree going back several generations. His great grandfather was a Hungarian international footballer at U21 level. His grandfather switched codes to be an England schoolboy rugby international on the wing. There is also sibling competition as his younger brother, Max, is currently gallivanting around Europe as part of the GB fencing squad.
Remarkably this is Dan’s 20th season at Sutton & Epsom and who is to say there will not be twenty more on the horizon.

Sutton & Epsom 20 Beckenham 19
It was the final home game of 2024 and Sutton had developed the handy knack of toppling league leaders at Rugby Lane having dispatched previously Sidcup and Medway. The Balmoral Avenue boys arrived in their familiar December pole position. The match had an international feel with Sutton sporting their Kiwi triumvirate and Beckenham including a brace Jamaican and Barbadian internationals as well as the exemplary talent of four Australians. Sadly, in the opening ten minutes the Kent side lost their influential 15 Bradley Bateup to a dislocated knee. The opening score came from the familiar source of the Bunting boot. The first try of the afternoon by Tom Ward edged the visitors into the lead. Later in the half Dan Jones crossed the whitewash to give Sutton a 10-5 lead at the break.
An early score by Rob Hegarty gave the S&E a healthy 17-5 advantage but Beckenham stormed back with Lamar Sinclair muscling his way over and Lewis Bunton reduced the deficit to 12-17 with a sweetly struck conversion. Magnificent defence by all concerned limited Sutton to a solitary Bunting penalty for a 20-12 advantage. Then the drama began. The league leaders appeared to have scored via a perfectly executed kick and chase. However, Mr Pearce had collided with a Beckenham forward and was poleaxed for the vital scoring moment. As the Touch Judges’ role is almost ceremonial at Level 6 a definite try could not be awarded. To their great credit Beckenham did not offer a word of complaint. Two minutes later justice was done. Rimani Richards wriggled free and powered over under the posts. As the match had already entered time added on Lewis Bunton drop-kicked the simple conversion as his side trailed 19-20.
The final play of the game began. For a full five minutes and for forty phases Beckenham retained possession. Forwards made bullocking charges at the line, backs darted hither and thither and passes were remarkably gathered off bootlaces. But the Black & White line held as heroic tackling was matched by dedicated discipline to not concede a penalty. The action gathered under the hosts’ posts. Finally, the ball was passed back to Lewis Bunton for a drop goal but his effort was blocked by Freddy Bunting. Sutton kicked it onto the Cabbage Patch to secure the 20-19 win.

The Magpies are Sutton & Epsom RFC’s very own Golfing Society and all club members automatically qualify as members. You don’t need any particular high level of golfing skill although a sense of humour and ability to ‘lunch’ well will help!
Come and join players, past and present, and enjoy your fantastically entertaining Golf Society – a warm welcome is assured. We have four meetings a year including the legendary Christmas meeting and Captain’s Away Day.
For further information contact:
Felix Symonds (Captain) 07976 062567 magpiesgolfsociety@gmail.com
We are always looking for new business partners with whom we can build relationships for long-term mutual benefit.
In return, we can offer our sponsors a range of benefits, including opportunities to promote their business and their products, to generate direct sales via club membership and to entertain their clients, both at the club and at Twickenham.
We have a range of packages available to suit all budgets and objectives. For an initial discussion, without obligation, please contact:

The clubhouse and grounds are available for hire at very reasonable rates. We can host a range of social functions, including parties, dinners, weddings and wakes, as well as indoor and outdoor facilities for clubs and societies of all descriptions. Generous discounts and special terms are offered for club members.
To enquire or make a booking, please contact:
Frankie Murray Club Steward suttonrugbyclubhouse@gmail.com

It is always happy hour for members of Sutton & Epsom RFC at their local wine bar. Please present your membership card for 10% off your bill.
