Legacy of Brilliance: Michelle Rabideau, CFRE, MPA

West Michigan Woman is published by Serendipity Media

A

As I write this, our entire team is coming off a high from the 2025 Brilliance Awards. After nine years, the program continues to shine a spotlight on the incredible men and woman doing incredibly meaningful work in our community. Each and every one of our finalists inspire, motivate and empower. I’m truly grateful they allow us to share their authentic stories with all of you.

The program celebrated three finalists in nine categories, our People’s Choice award winner and the Legacy of Brilliance award recipient, which this year celebrated Michelle Rabideau, CFRE, MPA. To say Michelle has left an imprint on our community would be an understatement. With over 30 years of philanthropic leadership, she has raised millions, volunteered, and led initiatives for organizations and nonprofits. She expresses herself authentically, loves what she does, and most important, has so much fun along the way. To learn more about Michelle, turn to page 28.

The evening culminated with the announcement of Catherine Ripley being named the 2025 Woman of the Year!

Catherine’s story is one of tenacity, strength, courage, determination, commitment and bravery. As a trailblazing entrepreneur, she practices what she preaches: “When someone tells you that you can’t, the best response is to show them you absolutely can.” She rejects limitations and continuously forges ahead and finds new ways to dream big, working to make them a reality. Her story is one we can all learn from (pg. 10).

During nominations each year, I’m in awe to learn about the great work happening in our community that most of us simply don’t know about. Our team loves to share these stories and we encourage you to support! It’s also why we decided to shine a light on “All Things Local” (pg. 18). It takes grit, determination and commitment to start a local business. When we support local, we invest in people, community and dreams. Be sure to adventure out and try something new this summer! Maybe it’s time to give pickleball a try … or get that tattoo you’ve been thinking about! Or, perhaps it’s time to get your dog some expert training … or maybe you need to blow off some steam! Whatever your needs, read about and dive into the amazing local scene we have right here in West Michigan!

GET YOUR SUNSHINE SWEAT ON!

STAYING ACTIVE OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER

WWhile it’s important to stay physically active year round, the summer months are the prime time for some outdoor activities that truly get your blood pumping. Grab your water and sunscreen and come along as we explore some ways to get sweating in the sunshine this summer in West Michigan.

Get some fresh air (and some miles in!) with Friendship Miles , an inclusive run group that prioritizes friendship and mental health over distance and speed. Founder & Executive Director Sammie Bennett describes the group as the place where you know you won’t be left behind.

“Friendship Miles was born from a deep desire to make the social running space more accessible, less intimidating, and more inclusive,” Bennett shared, noting how the group for many has become a “third space,” inherently supporting mental health as well.

“The dominant image of running often centers on being thin and fast. But the reality is: runners have always come in all shapes, sizes, paces, and backgrounds. We’re here to help reshape that image.”

Friendship Miles regularly partners with local organizations. This summer, those interested can join their Lantern Run Series (happening through September), and join in on several Pride-activated events in June, including collaborations with Grand Rapids Pride, Gazelle Sports, Lululemon, and HOKA. Learn more by following Friendship Miles on Facebook, Instagram, Strava, and at friendshipmiles.com.

Those who enjoy feeling the wind in their hair and good community should check out Luton Loops and Libations , a seasonal, weekly (every Wednesday at 6 p.m.) mountain bike ride for all skill levels at Rockford’s Luton Park.

“I started Luton Loops because I felt there was a huge need for a casual community ride in West

Michigan, and I chose Luton because it’s a beginner friendly course,” said Pamela Collins, Founder of Luton Loops & Libations.

Collins, knowing that plenty of couples like to ride together, wanted to make it a co-ed group.

“It’s a fun way to instill a healthy lifestyle and also learn about other trails in the area, racing events, and meet people. I have a lot of really great success stories of people who’ve been coming consistently since the group started, and it has been extremely beneficial. Like anything, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it,” Collins added.

Whether you choose to ride alone or with a group, there’s always a fun window for socialization post-ride, with anywhere from 20 to 50 people showing up for some rides. All you need is an entry level mountain bike, helmet and water. To learn more and get involved, search for the “Luton Loops & Libations!” group on Facebook.

For the young ones, consider the various outdoor offerings found at Cannonsburg Ski Area

“We have a new program called Cannonsburg Kids Adventure Camp for kids ages 6-12. The camp is four days a week and incorporates hiking, group activities, arts and crafts, survival skills and much more,” said Danielle Musto, Cannonsburg Marketing Director. “Parents can sign their kids up for one week, or all five sessions! We also have a mountain bike team and trail running team for kids ages 5-12 on Thursday evenings.”

The general public can also enjoy the over 12 miles of trails at Cannonsburg for hiking, biking and trail running! The ski hills— with a playground at the base—are perfect for anyone needing to do hill repeats. Don’t forget to hit up their Taco Tuesday, every Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. This family-friendly night is ideal for families looking to go hiking, biking or trail running before enjoying some tacos and cold beverages on the Cannonsburg deck.

“For mountain biking, folks need a mountain bike and helmet. For trail running, trail shoes. Other than that, bring a water bottle, comfortable clothes to work out in, and a sense of adventure!” Musto added.

Visit cannonsburg.com for info about the programs, along with a trail map and calendar of events. The site also plays host to events by outside promoters, like trail running races, bike demos, and a Spartan race. WMW

IBACKYARD BLISS:

MAKING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES COME ALIVE

It’s truly West Michigan’s time to shine; when the sun is shining, birds are singing, and spending time outdoors is (rightfully so) the only thing many of us want to do. If your outdoor space at home could use some sprucing up in order to make it the sundrenched place you’ve always dreamt of, keep reading.

DETERMINE YOUR PURPOSE

According to Ali Bryde, the creative force behind MSB Interior Design, LLC, curating an intentional, beautiful outdoor space isn’t just a luxury here—it’s essential.

“Whether you’ve got a spacious backyard, a petite patio, or a city balcony, transforming your outdoor lounge into a spot that serves you is absolutely possible,” Bryde said. “Before you run out and buy that cute bistro set or adorable umbrella, take a breath and ask yourself: What do I want this space to do for me? That answer will guide every other decision you make.”

It helps to picture your outdoor space as a cozy extension of your home, Bryde shared, suggesting opting for plush seating like lounge chairs, deep benches, poufs, or even a hammock if space allows. Arrange furniture to allow for conversation— and don’t forget lighting for those post-sunset gatherings! Bryde recommends solar path lights, café bulbs and lanterns.

WHAT’S TRENDING?

Bryde noted this season’s trends are all about a “cozy meets natural” vibe, where earthy textures, mixed materials, and vibrant yet grounded accents take center stage. Luckily, these trends are easy to implement, no matter the existing size or style of your space.

“Pair materials like rattan with powder-coated steel or mix wood with concrete for a look that’s both relaxed and modern,” Bryde said, recommending injecting color via cushions or planters in terracotta, forest green, or navy.

“Define larger areas with pergolas, curtains, or a shade sail to help zone the space and cozy things up.”

NATURE TO THE RESCUE

“Plants instantly bring life to a space—literally. Whether you’re a green thumb or a lowmaintenance plant lover, there’s room for greenery in every setup,” Bryde shared, suggesting clustering planters in groups of three or five, mixing heights, textures, and pot styles. “Use tall grasses or dwarf trees for privacy and structure. Consider an espalier, and grow herbs like rosemary, thyme, or basil for both fragrance and function.”

Bryde also recommends bordering garden beds or walkways with natural elements like gravel, mulch, or river rock.

SHORT ON SPACE? NO PROBLEM

Don’t make the mistake of believing a small space lacks potential. Bryde encourages getting creative with a little smart thinking to make any limited space shine.

“Go vertical! Use wall space for planters, hooks, or even a trellis garden; choose slim, stackable, or foldable furniture to maximize flexibility; and stick to neutral base colors to make the space feel open, then add pops of color with pillows, plants, or a bold umbrella.”

SMALL STEPS, BIG RESULTS

While you may be overwhelmed thinking your space needs a total renovation, Bryde emphasized that sometimes the smallest updates also have the greatest impact. And yes, you can (and should!) repurpose existing or secondhand items to accomplish your goals.

“Give your deck or furniture a fresh coat of paint or stain; swap out old cushion covers or throw down a new rug to bring in new color; DIY a planter box, bench, or coffee table—there are tons of tutorials out there, even for beginners,” Bryde said.

Ultimately, your outdoor space should function with your specific lifestyle in mind, whether it’s room for the kids to run around and play, a comfortable gathering place for family and your (sometimes rowdy) book club, or simply a sanctuary of solitude to sip your morning coffee.

“Our outdoor season in Michigan is short, but oh so sweet,” Bryde said. “With a little thoughtful planning, layering, and a whole lot of heart, you can create a space that becomes your personal escape, your gathering place, and your favorite extension of home—even if it doesn’t have any walls.” WMW

WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Catherine Ripley

Catherine Ripley—a trailblazing entrepreneur, mentor, and advocate for women in technology and business—comes from a long line of very strong women.

“I like to say that’s where I get my courage, but it’s really where I get my stubbornness,” said Ripley, who has overcome the various decks of cards stacked against her throughout the years. Whether it was moving out of her family home at 16, facing homelessness with her two daughters as a young single mother, or choosing to tackle starting a business in a male-dominated industry at 39 with no entrepreneurial experience, you could describe the path Ripley has walked as uneven cobblestone vs. smooth pavement. Regardless, she managed to forge ahead, having now created a life she’s wildly proud of. As founder of Symplicity Communications, Ripley has secured landmark deals in the technology sector and nearly doubled her company’s revenue in the past year alone.

growth, I have evolved Symplicity into a thriving, nationally recognized business that not only supports my family but also creates opportunities for my incredible team,” Ripley shared. “Knowing that I’ve built a company where people can grow their careers, where women in tech can see leadership that looks like them, and where we continue to break new ground in CX, automation, government contracting, and technology solutions is an achievement I take immense pride in.”

that you can’t, the best response is to show them you absolutely can. I use my own story—going from homelessness with my two daughters to building a successful technology company—as a testament that circumstances do not define your future … your courage and perseverance do.”

“Through tenacity and a relentless commitment to

A defining moment in Ripley’s journey is moving Symplicity Communications into the iconic space at 60 Monroe Center, a milestone that cements her company’s deep commitment to Grand Rapids’ business community. Having the building bear the Symplicity Communications name, Ripley said, marks a new era of growth and influence for both her company and the city.

“I encourage women to reject limitations imposed by others and to prove—first and foremost to themselves—that they are capable of anything they set their minds to,” Ripley said. “When someone tells you

Ripley serves as a Board Member for Inforum and serves on the Technology Council of West Michigan, continuously advocating for women’s leadership and innovation. She also hosts the Symplicity Conversations podcast, amplifying the voices of women in tech. Her dedication to excellence, integrity, and empowerment shapes a legacy of leadership that inspires others to rise above obstacles, embrace their potential, and redefine success on their own terms.

“Our legacy isn’t the title that we had or the size of our businesses; our legacy is how many people we touch and how many people that we can lift up and push to be more,” Ripley emphasized. “I hope my story serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to step into your purpose, challenge the status quo, and create something truly meaningful.”

“When someone tells you that you can’t, the best response is to show them you absolutely can.”

RAINY DAYS HAPPEN

WHY BUILDING AN EMERGENCY FUND IS THE SMARTEST MONEY MOVE YOU CAN MAKE THIS YEAR

LLife throws us curveballs, whether it’s an expected job loss, a medical bill you didn’t see coming, or a heater that quits in the middle of January. When you’re blindsided by misfortune, having a financial cushion can mean the difference between stress and security. That’s where your emergency fund comes in.

“None of us plans for a job loss or injury,” said Melissa Stewart, CFP®, Founder and Senior Financial Advisor at Clear Vista Advisors. “If you’re forced to put those expenses on a credit card or take out a loan, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to make the payments. An emergency fund gives you breathing room.”

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?

You’ve likely heard the rule of thumb: stash away three to six months’ worth of expenses. But that’s a big range—how do you know what’s right for you?

“If there are two equal earners in the household, you can lean toward three months,” Stewart explained. “But if one person is the primary breadwinner, aim for six months. That way, if they lose their job or get injured, your family can still cover the essentials.”

In times of economic uncertainty—or if you sense layoffs could be looming—she recommends taking a closer look. “Tighten the budget, find ways to save more, and build that cushion. Even knowing you have six months of expenses saved can help you sleep better at night.”

A SMART WAY TO SAVE

Building a robust emergency fund takes discipline, but Stewart has a clever hack to help make the money harder to touch.

“Open a savings account at a bank you don’t normally use, and don’t get a debit card or anything else for it. You want to only be able to access it by walking into the bank,” she advised. “Then set up a direct deposit from your paycheck, so a small amount goes into that account automatically. You’ll be building savings without thinking about it.”

EMERGENCIES VS. INCONVENIENCES

So what does qualify as an emergency?

“A true emergency is something unexpected that you don’t have time to save for,” Stewart said. Tap into your fund for things like a surprise medical bill or your car needing a new transmission.

Vacations or a new dress for a wedding?

Those are financial inconveniences . “If you can see it coming, you can save for it,” she added.

KEEP IT SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE

An emergency fund should be easy to access, so it’s available when you need it. “Liquidity is essential,” Stewart emphasized.

High-yield savings accounts, CDs with short terms, or money market accounts are all good options. “Just be sure to check with your bank regarding their early withdrawal terms and penalties on CDs,” she cautioned.

WHAT IF YOU’RE SAVING FOR EVERYTHING ?

Many families feel the tug between building an emergency fund and saving for retirement, college, or paying off debt. Stewart recommends tackling it in stages.

“Start by saving at least $1,000—just to get a basic cushion,” she said. “Then focus on paying down any high-interest debt, like credit cards. After that, build your emergency fund up to that three-to-sixmonth target. Once that’s in place, shift focus to retirement and other goals.”

Dave Ramsey’s baby steps offer a simple roadmap. Whether or not you’re a fan, the approach is a tried-and-true way to build financial stability.

GET THE KIDS INVOLVED

Teaching kids about emergency funds— even for life’s little surprises—can help them develop financial literacy and set them up for lifelong success.

For younger kids, Stewart recommended the classic three-jar system: give, save, spend. When they earn an allowance, have them dedicate some of each payment to each jar. “It teaches good habits early,” she said.

When it comes to teens, the stakes go up a bit. “If they’re responsible for their car insurance, gas, or cell phone bill, they also need an emergency fund,” said Stewart. “If they lose their job or their phone breaks, they need to have money saved to handle it.”

PEACE OF MIND, ONE DEPOSIT AT A TIME

Building an emergency fund may not be glamorous—but it’s one of the most important, fundamental things you can do for your family. It’s a financial safety net, a stress reducer, and a reminder that you’re ready for whatever life throws your way. WMW

DAYCATION IDEAS FOR YOUR NEXT SMALL ADVENTURE

SSometimes you just need to get away. But, you don’t necessarily want the commitment—or the cost—of a full-blown escape. Here, we’ve collected some close by destinations where you can spend a few hours or an afternoon. Note that some of these spots are seasonal, so plan accordingly!

GO WEST

Cherry Point Farm & Market in Shelby is known for its beautiful Lavender Labyrinth and herb garden, and they also make a ridiculously tasty cherry strudel. While there, you can wander the grounds, shop the farm market, and grab a bite to eat. It’s close to the Lake Michigan shoreline, so you can make it one stop in a longer day trip.

About 10 minutes from the farm is Silver Lake Sand Dunes . In addition to scaling the dunes and basking on the beach, you can rent recreation gear, including ORVs, bikes, kayaks, dune buggies, and more. Or, take a 40-minute excursion with Mac Wood’s Dune Rides. Nearby is Little Sable Point Lighthouse, which you can view from the ground, or take a tour and a trip to the top for panoramic views.

In New Era, which is also in the vicinity, is Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo . Fun for families and also kids at heart, it has animal encounters, a splash pad, a carousel, and a variety of games and playground activities. There are plenty of photo op stations and tasty treats, too.

ENJOY SOUTHERN CHARM

If you’re looking for something more adult oriented, Fennville and the region as a whole—is a hot spot for wine and craft beer enthusiasts. Fenn Valley and Modales wineries and Waypost Brewing Co. are favorites, and a stop at Crane’s Restaurant, Pies & Winery is also a must. Cheese lovers will want to head to Evergreen Lane Farm & Creamery, and if you love rockhounding, check out Pier Cove Park.

Kind of a hidden gem with a little extra magic on the side is Leila Arboretum in Battle Creek. This 85-acre park has gardens, trails, and walkways, plus public art and sculptures, a disc golf course, and a number of other points of interest. And, you won’t want to miss one of its bigger draws: Fantasy Forest—a collection of dragons, wizards, castles, and mythical creatures carved from old ash tree trunks.

Those on the hunt for treasures and collectibles will want to add Allegan Antiques Market to their calendar. Held on the last Sunday of the month, May through September, it features hundreds of vendors, both indoors and outdoors, and it’s been rated “One of the Ten Best Shows in America” by Antiques Magazine

FEAST AND FEST IN THE EAST

There are several, date-specific annual events in and around mid-Michigan to keep an eye out for in the summer months. Among them is the Ann Arbor Art Fair, held in mid-July. For three days, hundreds and hundreds of artists take over nearly 30 blocks in downtown. It’s the largest juried art fair in the nation and it brings in close to half a million visitors during its run. In mid-August, Lansing holds its Old Town ArtFeast , where tons of arts and crafts sellers fill the streets—plus, there are food trucks with delicious eats and neighborhood boutiques and restaurants to shop and dine.

If you’re a Michigander, you have to (at least once) go to the Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly. It’s really a rite of passage. It runs weekends midAugust through the end of September, and each has its own theme. There are demonstrations, performances, activities, food and drink, and an artisan marketplace. Dressing for the occasion isn’t necessary, but it does add to the experience!

CROSS STATE LINES

Michigan City, Indiana is often overlooked, but it shouldn’t be. It has great beaches, including Washington Park (where there’s also a zoo) and Indiana Dunes National Park, which is home to Mt. Baldy. Other to-dos are Friendship Botanic Gardens, Barker Mansion, and Old Lighthouse Museum. If you want to do a little gaming, place your bets at Blue Chip Casino.

And, never overlooked is Chicago . Many go just for the shopping and dining, but in the summer, it has loads of annual festivals that are definitely worth the trip. Some popular ones are Chicago Pride Fest in June; Windy City Smokeout and Chinatown Summer Fair, both in July; and, in August, Chicago Air and Water Show and Chicago Jazz Festival. Those are a few, but you can find them all at choosechicago.com. WMW

LEGACY OF BRILLIANCE: MICHELLE RABIDEAU

CFRE, MPA

WWith over 30 years of philanthropic leadership, Michelle Rabideau, CFRE, MPA, has raised over $125 million for causes in healthcare, education, and women’s empowerment. As President of Saint Mary’s Foundation, she has been instrumental in advancing community initiatives and public service in West Michigan. Her remarkable dedication continues to shape the region’s future. Rabideau has played key roles in numerous community organizations, advocating for healthcare access, women’s rights, and social justice. She remains a powerful force for positive change, inspiring others through her leadership and commitment to service.

Rabideau is the third recipient of the West Michigan Woman Legacy of Brilliance Award, an honor created as part of the annual Brilliance Awards, which recognizes a woman who for years has given of herself, personally and professionally, to better the lives of those around her. We caught up with Rabideau to get her perspective on her work and what advice she has for others.

WHEN REFLECTING BACK ON YOUR WORK, WHAT DO YOU SEE AND FEEL?

I see a healthier community for all, empowered people, teamwork, and a positive difference for those I serve. I feel immense gratitude, hope, true joy … I feel honored about the role I’ve played in making a difference for others. And I see and feel like I have so much more to do!

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO OTHER WOMEN HOPING TO HAVE AS RESPECTED AND IMPACTFUL A CAREER AS YOURSELF?

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PROUDEST MOMENTS?

I get to see how my work makes a difference every day. I’ve built wonderful relationships with people who’ve become like family to me. But, what I’m most proud of is how I lead my team. My team knows I’m a nurturing leader … that means I care deeply about them. I want to see each of them be personally and professionally successful, and that looks different for everyone. We work hard to be a highly engaged team. The average tenure of fundraising staff is 16-18 months—and our team boasts an average tenure of 9.2 years. That’s a mic drop. I’m extremely proud of that.

“... We are stronger together. Celebrate your successes. Do what you love to do. Find your authentic self and what fills your heart and soul.”

I feel like this is my Barbie speech moment! We each bring something unique to this world. Lean into what makes you your authentic great self. Speak up more. Your voice matters. Learn to stand up for what you believe in. Lift each other up. There is no room for tearing each other down. We are stronger together. Celebrate your successes. Do what you love to do. Find your authentic self and what fills your heart and soul. Now, go get it all!

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO TACKLING NEXT?

Tomorrow. Seriously, I’ve really tried to live more in the present instead of what lies ahead. But, it’s a good exercise to think ahead and dream about the future. You can bet that whatever I choose to do next will help others in some way, contribute to my personal learning and growth, be aligned with my values, and of course, be really, really fun. WMW
