AAs we step into November, I find myself reflecting on just how special our SYTA community is. Around the world, there are countless associations, but there is truly nothing quite like SYTA. What makes us unique is not just the scale of trips we support or the destinations we highlight, but the purpose behind everything we do: ensuring that young people have access to safe, life-changing travel experiences.

In my role as President, I have the privilege of seeing first-hand the impact our members create. From the moments of wonder in a historic city square, to the confidence students gain when performing on stage abroad, to the friendships that last long after the trip is over—these are the stories that remind me why our work matters. They also reinforce SYTA’s role as the leading voice for student and youth travel, and our responsibility to keep raising the bar when it comes to health, safety, and value for schools and families.

In this issue, we’re taking a look at Pennsylvania’s rich history going all the way back to 1787, Ontario’s capital cities and endless nature, and Germany’s lush landscape and vibrant towns.

For our teacher profile, we check in with Jennifer Oncken, a vocal music director in St. Charles, Missouri who brings her talented high school students on a performance trip every year. We also speak with travel planner Beth Beccone about her

time traveling in Europe with a multi-school band and choir, performing in historic churches and bustling town squares alike.

One way to make sure you’re ready for any issue that could arise is to work with a student travel planner. Time and again, we hear from educators who went from organizing trips on their own to working with a professional (especially certified SYTA planners), and realized they could never go back.

That’s where the Educators’ Buyers Guide comes in! It’s a handy list of every planner, destination and supplier that’s part of SYTA, which means they know student travel inside and out. You might even want to keep it around all year long for reference.

As you read through this issue, I encourage you to think about the powerful role we all play in shaping the next generation of travellers, leaders, and global citizens. Every itinerary built, every concert arranged, every safety measure put in place is more than a logistical step—it is an investment in students’ growth, learning, and wellbeing. Together, we are creating a global classroom without walls, one that teaches empathy, resilience, and cultural understanding in ways textbooks alone never can.

I am proud to serve as SYTA President, and even more proud to stand alongside you as we continue building a stronger, safer, and more connected future for student travel.

SYTA AND BONARD RELEASE 2024 STUDENT TRAVEL BUSINESS BAROMETER

SYTA and our research partner, BONARD, have been actively engaged in monitoring the global student group travel market since 2014. Six years ago, we introduced the Student Travel Business Barometer to equip our stakeholders with timely, relevant and reliable data on the industry’s performance.

In its sixth year, the Barometer now offers a comprehensive view of one complete market cycle-capturing the industry’s pre-pandemic size and trends, documenting the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, and tracking the gradual recovery. In 2022 and 2023, we tracked the resilient student travel comeback, which set new benchmarks for student travel data.

In 2024, we have streamlined the Barometer data to reflect the stabilization of the market today. The findings within are also affected by these trends that continue to dominate the student travel market: Pent-up demand, economic uncertainties, changing preferences, safety concerns, and increased offering competition in the market.

MEET THE MET

Earlier this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art reopened The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, following the completion of a major renovation. The wing includes the collections in the Arts of Africa, the Ancient Americas, and Oceania galleries, and features over 1,800 works spanning five continents and hundreds of cultures. These three major world traditions stand as independent entities in a wing that is in dialogue with neighboring gallery spaces. The galleries had been closed to the public and under renovation since 2021, but reopened to the public in May.

The reinstallation of all three collection areas—in the Arts of Africa, the Ancient Americas, and Oceania galleries— reflects new scholarship, undertaken in collaboration with international experts and researchers. Digital features and new wall text allow for deeper contextualization of objects.

Additionally, across each collection, there are objects on view for the first time, including major new acquisitions of historic and contemporary art in the Arts of Africa galleries; a gallery dedicated to light-sensitive ancient Andean textiles, which are the first of its kind in the United States; and several new commissions for the Oceania galleries by Indigenous artists and a range of new digital features that present contemporary perspectives. Learn many more details at metmuseum.org.

ROCK AND ROLL

There’s no better place to celebrate the holidays with students than Rockefeller Center. From standing beneath the world-famous Christmas Tree to skating at The Rink at Rockefeller Center Presented by Chase Freedom, groups can enjoy

classic New York traditions together.

Students can also take in breathtaking 360-degree views from the Top of the Rock observation deck, an inspiring experience that sparks conversation about New York’s history, architecture, and skyline. For an even deeper dive,

the Rockefeller Center Tour explores Rockefeller Center’s stunning Art Deco design, public art, and cultural legacy with an expert guide. Between activities, groups can grab hot cocoa at Ralph’s Coffee or a treat from Glace, then browse shops like FAO Schwarz and Nintendo.

With its mix of festive fun, learning opportunities, and unforgettable sights, Rockefeller Center is the ultimate holiday destination for student groups— where tradition, education, and joy come together in the heart of New York City. Learn more at rockefellercenter.com.

THINKING FORWARD

The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum has announced the next phase of gallery openings at its flagship building in Washington, DC. Five new exhibitions, the Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater and the museum’s redesigned entrance on Jefferson Drive along the National Mall opened in July. The project to renovate the entire museum began in 2018 and will culminate next year when the remaining galleries open July 1, 2026, the 50th anniversary of the museum in Washington and in time for the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Thousands of artifacts will go back on display in the reopened galleries. Favorites such as the Spirit of St. Louis, the North American X-15, John Glenn’s Mercury Friendship 7 capsule, Apollo Lunar Module 2 and the touchable moon rock will be back on view. Get details and tickets at airandspace.si.edu.

UNDER THE SEA

A family-fun and educational attraction at Put-in-Bay is now open in Shores & Islands Ohio after undergoing a $6.2 million renovation. The Aquatic Visitors Center is on Put-in-Bay (South Bass Island), and closed during the 2024 season for renovations. The project included a complete redesign of the building’s interior, a new roof, new windows, and the installation of air conditioning. According to the Division of Wildlife, the facility has been updated with interactive displays and exhibits that showcase the unique features of the island area and highlight Lake Erie’s nationally renowned fisheries for species such as walleye, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. The building will now also include an ADA-accessible ramp and entrance, allowing even more people to enjoy the facility. Best of all? It’s free. Read about their offerings at putinbay.com.

SAFER, EASIER, CHEAPER: WHY YOU SHOULD USE A SYTA TRAVEL PLANNER

PPlanning a student trip is a rewarding experience—but can also be an overwhelming one. Between organizing logistics, handling student behavior, coordinating with parents, and tying the adventure back to educational goals, it can feel like a full-time job on top of teaching. That’s where expert help makes all the difference.

Enter the travel planner.

Travel planners, especially those who specialize in student travel, are the behind-the-scenes and on-the-ground heroes of smooth, safe, and unforgettable trips. And when they’re members of the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA), you’re getting even more: a commitment to high standards, student-specific expertise, and a passion for creating meaningful travel experiences.

WHAT MAKES SYTA TRAVEL PLANNERS STAND OUT?

Not all travel planners are created equal. SYTA members adhere to a code of ethics, carry specific levels of insurance, and meet elevated standards for safety, financial responsibility, and professionalism. Many SYTA planners are former educators themselves—people who understand classroom dynamics and have firsthand experience planning school trips.

They’re well-versed in studentfocused destinations, attractions, and accommodations, and many are trained in health and safety protocols. Their knowledge extends to working with school leadership for trip approval, assisting with fundraising, and helping tie the experience back to curriculum goals.

RELATIONSHIPS THAT WORK IN YOUR FAVOR

One of the biggest advantages to using a SYTA travel planner is the network they bring with them. These professionals have built long-standing relationships with hotels, attractions, transportation providers, and local guides. That means better rates, VIP access, and exclusive experiences your group might not get otherwise.

These connections also shine during unexpected challenges. For example, when COVID-19 caused widespread closures and

cancellations, SYTA planners were able to use their vendor relationships to rebook, reschedule, and refund trips much more efficiently than an individual could manage alone.

TIME AND MONEY SAVED

Educators are already stretched thin—adding “trip coordinator” to your workload is a recipe for burnout. Travel planners manage everything from flights to motorcoaches to local regulations and insurance. They take care of every logistical detail so you can focus on students, fundraising, and enjoying the journey.

By accessing special group rates and bundling services, travel planners can often save schools money, too. And thanks to longterm vendor contracts and bulk purchasing power, SYTA planners offer exceptional value.

The best travel planners are also prepared to handle anything the road throws your way. From medical issues

to delayed flights, they provide onthe-ground support so you’re never alone in dealing with a crisis.

THE SYTA ADVANTAGE

Ultimately, working with a SYTA travel planner means you’re choosing a trusted, student-focused professional who brings expertise, safety, and creativity to every trip. SYTA planners are stewards of your travel funds, continuously educated on student travel trends, and committed to making each journey life-changing for your students.

Want to find a SYTA-certified planner near you? The Educators’ Buyers Guide is a great place to start (found on page 13).

Whether you’re heading to a national monument, performing at a music festival, or taking students abroad for the first time, don’t go it alone. Let a travel planner help make your trip unforgettable—and manageable.

Many SYTA planners are former educators themselves— PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND CLASSROOM DYNAMICS AND HAVE FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE PLANNING SCHOOL TRIPS.

JJENNIFER ONCKEN: SINGIN’ TO THE WORLD

Jennifer Oncken, one of Teach & Travel’s Traveling Teacher of the Year nominees, grew up in the home of a music educator. With music being a fundamental part of her formative years, it seemed natural that she would pursue a similar course. But, it wasn’t until more than a decade of working in the business world that Jennifer would arrive where she is today, serving as a vocal music director at Francis Howell North High School in St. Charles, Missouri.

She did initially go into music performance, but shifted tracks as her life took a different direction. Jennifer spent many years working in PR and marketing, teaching these topics to provide job-readiness training and help trade school students navigate their career paths and plan for their futures. It was in this line of work that she discovered her love of mentoring. But, it wasn’t until Jennifer had a transformative life event that catalyzed her combining her enthusiasm for both music and teaching.

“There was a moment of clarity when I realized that life is precious, and the time we have is precious,” she says. “I thought about how I was spending my time and how I wanted my children to follow their passions and do something that really made their hearts happy. To inspire that in them, I needed to live by example.”

After training her replacement at the trade school, she returned to college to earn her undergrad in music education—starting over in her mid-thirties. “It was a

long road,” she says. “But I’m grateful for all of it, because I think it shaped who I am as an educator immensely. I would not be the type of teacher I am now, had I not had that particular journey getting to where I am.”

When Jennifer started at Francis Howell North High School, the music program already had a history of taking a student trip to Orlando every year to compete at Festival Disney. So, she was fortunate that she didn’t have to gain buy-in from the leadership or parents. Having had her own opportunity as a high school junior to perform at Carnegie Hall with her choir, Jennifer knew these kinds of travel experiences are priceless for students—and needed to be integrated into her curriculum.

“After that Carnegie Hall performance and my time spent in New York City, the world grew infinitely for me,” she says. “Today, I feel a responsibility; that it’s part of my purpose to help my students’ lives be expanded in that same way, and show them that the world is so much bigger than us.”

Planning the first trip for her Francis Howell North students, Jennifer wasn’t alone. One of the student’s moms, Holly, worked with her beginning to end, from booking the flights and hotels to arranging the full itinerary. Years later, Holly still goes on every trip as head chaperone and Jennifer’s right-hand person.

With the exception of pandemic lockdowns and restrictions, they have gone on a trip every year,

Today, I feel a responsibility; that IT’S PART OF MY PURPOSE TO HELP MY STUDENTS’ LIVES BE EXPANDED in that same way, and show them that the world is so much bigger than us.

alternating between Orlando and New York City. At Disney, they typically perform at either Festival Disney or the Epcot Candlelight Processional. There are also Broadway workshops, where students can work with Disney cast.

When her classes travel to New York, usually every three years so students get at least one chance to go during their time studying with her, they perform at Carnegie Hall, as Jennifer once did. And, usually, they also do a residency with Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY).

Reflecting on her past trips with students, she can’t necessarily point to a favorite one, but she holds many special moments in her heart, whether it was a one-onone conversation with a student, connecting with a family member, or sitting in the audience beaming while watching her students perform with her favorite choral composer.

“These are permanent, core memories now for me, and I hope that they are for my students too,” Jennifer says.

While there are always more positives, there are challenges, too. Interpersonal conflicts, emotional breakdowns, illnesses, unexpected itinerary changes… any and all of these could come into play. But, it’s these setbacks that Jennifer says help build the soft skills that are crucial in life.

“There’s also the bonding experience for everyone,” she adds. “Those who play together stay together, and I think that’s important for them. They work so hard, and different trips in my program are designed to do different things. Some of them are meant to hone relationships and community building skills and others are more about pushing them to do their best.”

Jennifer does stress that the success of these trips is largely based on traveling with a reputable tour agency. She has used the same one, Educational Tours Inc., exclusively from the start, and there have been many times that they’ve stepped in to manage or avert catastrophe. This kind of support is invaluable with so many dynamics factoring in. Jennifer also ensures she has assistance; people who know her, know the trip inside and out like she does, and who she trusts enough to be able to answer for her.

“There’s so much that goes into it,” she says. “You have to have the right people surrounding you. That’s a blend of parents and chaperones who are able to be flexible and pivot when needed, and, again, a competent, experienced tour company.”

Flanked by a dedicated team and with several years of planning experience under her belt, Jennifer is considering two trips this year. “My colleagues, my friends, and my family may all think that’s a little crazy, but it will be 100% worth it,” she says.

HAPPY MEALS:

HOW

TO HANDLE FOOD ALLERGIES

WWhen planning a student trip, there’s a seemingly infinite number of details to juggle. Transportation, lodging, attractions—all of it requires attention. But one factor deserves special care: food allergies.

Food allergies aren’t just inconvenient; they can be dangerous, even life-threatening. Students often know how to manage their conditions, but traveling introduces new variables: unfamiliar dishes, hidden ingredients, shared kitchens, and the excitement of the trip itself. All it takes is one bite for a serious reaction to occur. That’s why trip leaders must prepare early and thoroughly.

Here’s how to keep your group safe—and confident—on the road.

GET THE DETAILS EARLY

Start by finding out exactly which foods your students are allergic to, what their reactions look like, and how severe they can be. Symptoms range from mild rashes to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical help.

A Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis

Emergency Care Plan should be on file for each student, signed by their physician, and should include treatment steps and emergency contacts. Encourage families to share specifics well before departure— six to eight weeks out is ideal. This allows time for doctor visits, prescription refills, or treatment plan updates.

PACK SMART AND KEEP MEDICATIONS ACCESSIBLE

Students should bring all necessary medications, including epinephrine auto-injectors, antihistamines, or inhalers. Stress that these must be easy to access, not buried in luggage. Chaperones should know where each student’s medication is stored and how to administer it.

Travel delays or cancellations can disrupt meals, so encourage students to pack an emergency snack stash. Familiar, safe foods provide peace of mind when special meals aren’t available.

COMMUNICATE WITH AIRLINES, RESTAURANTS, AND HOTELS

If flying, research airline policies and request allergy-friendly meals in advance. Some airlines may even ask passengers to refrain from bringing or eating specific foods on board.

When booking restaurants, call ahead to notify staff of your group’s allergies, and always confirm arrangements when you arrive.

Hotels near grocery stores or markets can be lifesavers, giving students a chance to purchase safe staples.

Tour operators and travel providers can also help by alerting venues ahead of time and arranging safe alternatives.

PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES

Even the best preparation can’t eliminate all risks. Always know the location of the nearest hospital, pharmacy, or allergist at your destination. If traveling abroad, learn how to communicate food allergies and emergency needs in the local language.

Trip leaders can practice administering epinephrine autoinjectors so they can respond calmly and quickly if needed.

BUILD A CULTURE OF EMPATHY

Food allergies can make students feel isolated or “different.” Encourage kindness and inclusivity within your group. A simple gesture—like a few classmates choosing to share an allergen-friendly meal—can make a huge difference.

KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR SAFER STUDENT TRAVEL

» Collect allergy details and care plans well in advance.

» Ensure students see their doctor before the trip.

» Keep medications labeled, accessible, and ready to use.

» Communicate with airlines, restaurants, and hotels early.

» Encourage students to pack safe snacks.

» Know where to find local medical help.

» Foster empathy and support among peers.

By preparing for the worst, you reduce the chances of an allergyrelated incident. And if something does happen, you’ll be equipped to respond quickly and confidently— helping every student enjoy the adventure to its fullest.

Food allergies can make students feel isolated or “different.” ENCOURAGE KINDNESS AND INCLUSIVITY WITHIN YOUR GROUP.

HISTORY, SCIENCE & SWEETS

PPennsylvania, widely considered to be “The Birthplace of America” because of its important historic sites and role in the formation of the United States, is an ideal student travel destination. Across the state there are countless landmarks and museums, and it’s also a place to explore STEAM education, ride the rails, and even indulge your sweet tooth.

Philadelphia is central to many significant happenings, from the signings of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution to the meeting of The First Continental Congress. An apt starting point for your group is the Museum of the American Revolution, where programs, galleries, and hands-on experiences come together to give students a view into the deeper story of the Revolution.

Penn Museum, an archaeological and anthropological museum with artifacts from around the world, offers a number of group packages, with the “After Hours Visit: Night At The Museum” itinerary being one of the most popular with students. Also recommended is “The Carbon Clock: Radioactivity and Archaeological Dating,” a workshop that helps students hone critical thinking and other educational skills while interpreting an ancient site.

On the science and technology side, there’s The Franklin Institute. In addition to interactive exhibits and planetarium shows, there is a vast body of exhibit resources available to classrooms. Also of interest are Independence Seaport Museum, which presents guided tours of their two historic ships, and Philadelphia Zoo, a 42-acre living classroom that’s also the Nation’s first zoo.

Another must for any trip to Pennsylvania is Gettysburg , especially for the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center & Guided Battlefield Tour. Of note are a film narrated by Morgan Freeman, the “Battle of Gettysburg” Cyclorama oil painting with accompanying light and sound show, the museum, and a guided tour of the battlefield. Groups can then continue their learning at Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center and participate in educational experiences, including a tour, scavenger hunt, and the “Become a Soldier” program.

While in town, take a 90-minute ride on the Gettysburg Railway, which provides a narrated history lesson and the possibility of wildlife sightings, such as turkeys, deer, and American bald eagles. The World War II American Experience is also of interest, with its authentic tanks, vehicles, uniforms, and artifacts. And, for a little fun and relaxation, there’s Hollabaugh Brothers, Inc. Fruit Farm and Market with many seasonal activities, from wagon tours of the working farm to demonstrations to up-close, enclosed beehive encounters.

Located in northeast Pennsylvania is Lackawanna County Like other areas in the expansive state, it’s packed with a variety of sights and activities. For starters, embark on the “Destination Freedom: The Underground Railroad Walking Tour” and then actually go 300 feet below ground to see an anthracite coal mine with a former miner as your guide. Those interested in early transportation will want to check out Steamtown National Historic Site to see historic locomotives or go to Electric City Trolley Station & Museum to learn how Scranton came to be named “The Electric City.”

Don’t forget to mix in some amusement! Let loose at Lahey Family Fun Park, see a movie at the classic Circle Drive-In, or visit an array of animals at Safari Farm Petting Zoo. And, for arts and performance enthusiasts, see a Broadway show at the Scranton Cultural Center or get in touch—in advance—with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to see if your group could have a chance to perform the National Anthem at an AAA Yankees baseball game.

There’s plenty to do in Reading , too. Ride in one of Colebrookdale Railroad’s beautifully restored train cars or learn about one of America’s famous frontiersmen at the Daniel Boone Homestead. GoggleWorks Center for the Arts is definitely a required stop for the creatives in your group, with galleries, workshops, a movie theater, studios, and a wealth of programs to inspire young artists.

Next up are a few destinations to take your students for something out of the ordinary. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a world-renowned refuge for birds of prey that has excellent educational programming and also miles of hiking trails with scenic views of the countryside. Crystal Cave, which was discovered in 1871, offers a one-hour tour that goes 125 feet underground so guests can explore interesting rock formations and cave pools—a discovery that blends geology and science. And, there’s Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, a place of significance for its part in American industrialization, as well as its historical records of Black workers—both free and indentured.

Pittsburgh is yet another Pennsylvania city that’s a favorite for student groups, with Kamin Science Center topping the list. A STEM hub with five floors of interactive exhibits and live demonstrations, it’s suitable for people of all ages. Extend that angle at Moonshot Museum for an out-of-this-world view into all things space, including seeing a real lunar spacecraft being built, going on a simulated space mission, or sending a message to the moon.

For fans of furry and feathered friends (and marine life!) there are options, too. The National Aviary houses more than 500 birds and animals, representing 150-plus species in naturalistic habitats, and provides shows, encounters, and feedings. And, home to thousands of animals from over 600 species is Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium—one of only a few zoo/aquarium combinations in the U.S. And, admission includes both.

Finally, make your last stop in Pittsburgh at Heinz History Center. A Smithsonian-affiliated museum, it features six floors of exhibits focusing on Western Pennsylvania history, most notably the Heinz company and the original set and puppets from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

End your trip on a delicious note at Hershey’s Chocolate World. There is a free tour that shows how chocolate is made from beginning to end, plus there are also four paid attractions to add: Hershey’s Great Candy Expedition, Hershey Trolley Works, Hershey’s Unwrapped, and Create Your Own Candy Bar. Continue your adventure by shopping at “World’s Largest HERSHEY’S Store,” and, if you’re still hungry, indulge in their group dining offering with a student-friendly buffet.

OTTAWA: CANADA’S CAPITAL CLASSROOM

If Washington, D.C. is America’s classroom, then Ottawa plays the same role for Canada. This is where students can see the nation’s story unfold, from Indigenous beginnings to the present day.

At the Canadian War Museum , history is told not only through artifacts but through powerful storytelling. Groups walk past tanks, aircraft, and personal mementos while hearing how global conflicts shaped Canada’s identity. Interactive exhibits invite students to grapple with questions of peace and remembrance.

Just across the river, the Canadian Museum of History provides a sweeping view of Canada’s cultural roots. Towering totem poles and Indigenous artifacts open the experience, while exhibits on settlement, immigration, and modern society show how diverse voices built the country. Students often leave with a broader perspective on Canada’s place in the world—and their own place within it.

The Canadian Museum of Nature shifts the focus from people to the planet. Inside its castlelike walls, students can explore dinosaur halls, fossil galleries, and a glittering collection of minerals. Live animal displays and immersive dioramas add a hands-on element that makes the natural sciences leap off the page.

Government and civics come alive at the Supreme Court of Canada, where groups can sit in the grand courtroom, hear about landmark cases, and even role-play as justices. For many, it’s the first time they see how law connects to everyday life.

Ottawa’s own roots are revealed at Bytown , the original settlement. Here, stories of canal builders and immigrants give context to the city’s rise as the capital. And at Parliament Hill , the heart of Canadian democracy, students can marvel at Gothic Revival architecture, climb the Peace Tower, and, if timed right, watch the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony—a spectacle of uniforms, drums, and pageantry.

When the learning gives way to hunger, the Byward Market is a sensory feast. Students can stroll past fruit stands, artisan stalls, and food vendors. A must-try? Ottawa’s iconic BeaverTail pastry, fried golden and topped with cinnamon sugar or chocolate.

TORONTO: A GLOBAL CITY OF CULTURE

Moving south to Toronto, students step into Canada’s largest and most diverse city—a place where over 200 cultures intersect. The adventure might begin at Kensington Market, a neighborhood of vintage shops, murals, and global bites. It’s a crash course in multiculturalism, where students might sample empanadas, jerk chicken, or bubble tea, all within a few steps. From there, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) offers one of North America’s largest and most varied collections. Ancient Egyptian artifacts, Chinese temple art, Indigenous objects, and a towering dinosaur skeleton are just the beginning. Hands-on galleries make the visit especially engaging for student groups.

Science and spectacle combine at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada , where moving walkways guide visitors through a 315-foot-long tunnel surrounded by sharks, rays, and sea turtles. Touch tanks allow students to get hands-on with marine life, while themed zones—from Canadian waters to tropical reefs—create a vivid sense of the global ocean.

Sports lovers won’t want to miss the Hockey Hall of Fame, where the Stanley Cup gleams in all its glory. Students can test their skills in interactive shooting and goaltending challenges, or explore memorabilia from hockey legends. It’s both a shrine to the sport and a celebration of Canadian culture.

Toronto also leans into the future with the Illuminarium , where cutting-edge projection technology creates immersive environments. Whether walking through outer space, an African safari, or digital dreamscapes, students are surrounded on all sides by sights and sounds that transform the learning experience into an adventure.

HISTORY BEYOND THE CITIES

Ontario’s stories stretch far beyond its big cities. At Historic Fort York , located in downtown Toronto, students can travel back to the War of 1812. Costumed interpreters lead musket drills, demonstrate historic cooking, and recount tales of soldiers defending the colony against American invasion.

Southwestern Ontario holds some of the province’s most moving history. The Underground Railroad Museum and the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History (formerly Uncle Tom’s Cabin) provide essential lessons on Canada’s role as a sanctuary for freedom seekers. Exhibits highlight not just hardship, but resilience, courage, and the building of new communities. For students, standing on the same land that once offered hope and refuge is an unforgettable experience.

NIAGARA FALLS AND BEYOND

Few places capture student imaginations like Niagara Falls. The roar of the water, the mist on your face, and the sheer power of nature leave a lasting impression. Groups can view the falls from multiple angles—by boat at the base, from scenic walkways above, or from the observation deck of the Skylon Tower, which soars 775 feet and provides a panoramic view of both the Canadian and American sides.

Beyond the falls, culture thrives at the Shaw Festival Theatre in nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake. Here, students are treated to professional productions of classic and contemporary works, sparking conversations about literature, history, and the performing arts.

CITY OF THE LAKES

In northern Ontario, Sudbury, the City of Lakes, offers yet another layer. At the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, students can paddle through cattail-filled wetlands, spot trumpeter swans, and learn about the fragile ecosystems that call this region home. Science North , a hands-on science center housed in two striking snowflake-shaped buildings, is a favorite for groups—complete with live animal ambassadors, an underground geology lab, and an IMAX theatre that makes big ideas feel even bigger.

To step further back in time, Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons invites students to walk through a reconstructed 17th-century French Jesuit mission, where costumed interpreters share stories of daily life, cross-cultural encounters, and the challenges of early settlement.

CASTLES, CATHEDRALS & CULTURE: EXPLORING GERMANY

GGermany is a living history book, full of medieval castles and baroque palaces alongside gorgeous river valleys and majestic mountains.

From the solemn reminders of Berlin’s divided past to the alpine charm of Munich, Germany offers student groups a blend of lessons, landscapes, and moments that linger long after the trip.

BERLIN:

A City of Contrasts

Few places illustrate the collision of past and present like Berlin . Groups begin at the Brandenburg Gate, its neoclassical columns once shadowed by Cold War tensions and now a proud symbol of unity. Just down the boulevard, the Kurfürstendamm shows off Berlin’s vibrant, modern side, with its endless shops, theaters, and cafés humming with life.

The echoes of division still resonate at Checkpoint Charlie, once the most famous border crossing between East and West. Students can step into a recreated guardhouse and reflect on stories of daring escapes. Fragments of the Berlin

Wall still stand nearby, painted with murals and messages that speak of both struggle and hope. For a deeper dive, the Topography of Terror Museum—built on the site of the former Gestapo headquarters—lays bare the machinery of Nazi rule, offering a sobering but essential lesson in resilience and responsibility.

Berlin also dazzles with culture. On Museum Island , five extraordinary museums reveal treasures from around the globe. Students might find themselves face-to-face with the famed bust of Nefertiti, or wandering through reconstructed ancient temples. Just beyond the city, in Potsdam , the ornate Sanssouci Palace welcomes visitors with Rococo interiors and gardens that stretch for acres, a glimpse into the grandeur of Prussian royalty.

HAMBURG:

Port of Dreams

Heading north, Hamburg offers a different rhythm. At HafenCity, gleaming modern architecture rises from what was once an industrial port, showcasing Germany’s futurefacing innovation. But the city’s real student magnet is

Miniatur Wunderland. With its sprawling landscapes, thousands of moving trains, tiny planes taking off, and whole cities built in miniature, it’s a jaw-dropping, whimsical marvel that blends engineering with pure imagination. Groups can spend hours discovering its hidden details—and still feel like they’ve only scratched the surface.

DRESDEN: The Florence on the Elbe

Along the Elbe River lies Dresden , often called “the Florence on the Elbe” for its artistic treasures and baroque beauty. The Frauenkirche, its domed roof rising above the skyline, is a symbol of the city’s rebirth— destroyed during WWII, it now stands fully restored, a testament to resilience.

At the Zwinger Palace, students can walk beneath ornate archways into courtyards that once hosted royal festivals. Inside the Zwinger Museum , masterpieces from Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens bring art history lessons vividly to life. The Dresden Castle adds another layer, with exhibitions that span weaponry, jewels, and centuries of Saxon rule.

For a more modern chapter, the DDR Museum offers hands-on exhibits of life in East Germany, from sitting in a Trabant car to flipping through propaganda textbooks. And at the grand Semper Opera House, even just a guided tour gives students a sense of the drama and elegance that have defined Dresden’s cultural scene for centuries.

MUNICH: Bavaria’s Beating Heart

Down south, Munich brims with Bavarian charm and urban energy. The twin towers of the Munich Cathedral dominate the city’s skyline, while in Marienplatz, the New Town Hall bursts with Gothic detail. Groups gather to watch its famous glockenspiel chime, as lifesize figures dance and joust high above the square.

Exploring the Altstadt (old town), students discover narrow lanes, market stalls, and centuries-old churches around every corner. The Residenz, once the home of Bavarian monarchs, opens doors to glittering halls, artfilled galleries, and ornate chambers that show off royal life in its finest detail.

History takes on a modern shape at the 1972 Olympic Park, with its sweeping tent-like architecture and grounds that once welcomed athletes from around the world. Today, it’s a place for students to climb towers, paddle on the lake, or simply soak up the atmosphere of global connection.

Of course, Munich is also about cultural traditions. At the legendary Hofbräuhaus, students won’t be raising beer steins, but they will hear the sounds of Bavarian folk music, taste fresh-baked pretzels, and experience the convivial spirit that makes Munich so welcoming. Not far away, the golden spires of the Schöner Brunnen (“Beautiful Fountain”) in Nuremberg add a touch of fairytale wonder to the journey.

BEYOND THE CITIES

Germany’s countryside is just as captivating. In Heidelberg, the romantic ruins of Heidelberg Castle rise above the Neckar River, inspiring poets, philosophers, and students alike with its mix of grandeur and decay.

In Wittenberg, the cradle of the Reformation, students can visit the Schlosskirche (Castle Church), where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses, and the Luther House, once his family home, now filled with artifacts that trace his life and ideas. St. Mary’s Church , where Luther often preached, adds another tangible layer to this transformative history.

The Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm , one of Europe’s first landscape parks, introduces groups to a world of winding canals, neoclassical temples, and manicured gardens—a chance to see how art, architecture, and nature were harmonized in the 18th century. Finally, in Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage town, half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and medieval squares immerse students in Germany’s storybook past.

I THE MINDFULNESS, MOVEMENT AND NOURISHMENT OF WELLNESS TOURISM

In 2023, wellness tourism had a $830 billion economic impact. What is wellness tourism and how has it changed travel? According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness tourism is, “Travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal well-being. It involves individuals or groups visiting awe-inspiring destinations that focus on rejuvenating activities that improve one’s physical, mental, and spiritual wellness and provides healthy food options.” Ideally, when a traveler returns home after a wellness tourism experience, they feel better

than when they left for the journey.

Wellness tourism focuses on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and reducing stress. There are two types of wellness travelers: (1) primary wellness travelers—those who choose a trip or a destination motivated by wellness, and (2) secondary wellness travelers—those who seek to maintain wellness while traveling. No matter what the destination, one can find opportunities to recharge the body and nourish the mind.

An educator can incorporate unique wellness experiences that feature mindfulness, movement, and

nourishment activities. Mindfulness activities could involve the five senses, nature walks, yoga, spas, hot springs, tai chi, healing ceremonies, and gratitude journals. These mindfulness activities encourage the students to slow down, cultivate present-moment awareness, and experience a slower paced itinerary. Movement pursuits involve physical tasks that allow the students to have fun while enjoying adventurous activities, often in picturesque settings. Hiking, kayaking, biking, horseback riding, taking safaris, and other outdoor

adventures are notable examples. They allow the educator and students to participate in physical activities while experiencing the local culture.

A focus on nourishment is key in wellness tourism, where the food consumed becomes more than a meal. According to Global Wellness Institute, “The meals become moments to be savored.” This could include healthy meals that include produce grown on site, unique cooking classes, farm-to-table dining and eating meals with local families.

Due to the surge in wellness tourism, destinations are focusing on and becoming known for offering experiences that recharge the body and nourish the mind. These destinations include locations in the United States and in other countries.

Recently, I participated in a threeweek overland tour of Mongolia that focused on wellness tourism. There were 22 participants, including educators who were seeking new experiences to share with their students. Throughout the excursion, we explored Mongolia and experienced mindfulness, movement, and nourishment. Each person brought camping gear and slept in the wild. We became one with nature, taking in the sights, sounds and smells.

Every five days, we stayed in a GER camp (traditional Mongolia yurt-like structures that provide a culturally immersive and lodging experience in scenic and remote

areas) where we had access to showers and flush toilets. While camping, camels, goats, horses, and sheep surrounded our tents, and the scenery was incredible. Our campsite views included mountains, lakes, rivers, and even double rainbows, on those rainy days.

The highlight was camping in the Gobi Desert. Despite the intense heat in the desert, it was amazing to camp with a view of the sand dunes. Each night on this journey, I sat by the campfire and enjoyed the peacefulness and mindfulness.

Throughout the trip, we visited nomad families. These families lived in portable yurts (a circular tent made of skin) and moved seasonally to find pastures for their livestock. Each family we met had a deep sense of community and hospitality. They invited us into their homes and shared local food and drink, such as pierogi, mutton, fermented mare milk, and camel’s milk. They gave insight into their lifestyle and their deep connection to their animals and land.

We also had opportunities to focus on movement and participate in physical activities. My favorite activity was riding a Bactrain, twohumped, camel in the Gobi Desert. These camels adapt to the unique desert ecosystem. We also rode wild horses, hiked to view monasteries, petroglyphs, canyons, red cliffs, and boreal forests, and went birdwatching at Lake Khovsgol, the largest lake in Mongolia.

One of the highlights of the tour

was attending the Naadam Festival, an annual national celebration of three manly sports-horse racing, wrestling and archery. In addition to the sports, there were parades, music, and participants in traditional dress. It was a culturally immersive experience.

Finally, we had nourishment, Mongolian food, and other meal options on this wellness tour. The tour participants were from all around the world, and my fellow travelers prepared dishes that were native to their countries and shared them with us as we camped. Shopping in grocery stores was an experience, not only because of the language barrier, but also finding produce, meat, and cheeses.

Mongolia has very few cities, so often we shopped in small grocery stores with limited food options. When we traveled through towns, we stopped and ate at local restaurants where we had an opportunity to taste traditional Mongolian food like fried meat pastries, dried curd cheese, steamed dumplings and noodle dishes. Not only did we eat healthy on this trip, but we learned about Mongolia and other cultures through our meals.

I encourage educators to seek out wellness trips with the purpose of promoting health and well-being through mindfulness, movement, and nourishment activities. These wellness centered trips will provide transformative and unique travel experiences for the students while promoting healthy lifestyles. These

HARMONY ACROSS BORDERS:

HOW AMERICAN MUSIC ABROAD BRINGS STUDENTS TOGETHER

EEach summer, American Music Abroad brings together students from across the country, many of whom have never met before, to form traveling ensembles. They spend a few days rehearsing together, building friendships, and transforming from strangers into a cohesive band and choir. Then, they board a plane headed across the Atlantic.

In partnership with Peak Group Travel, which acquired AMA a few years ago, these trips take students on a twoweek tour around Europe. Along the way, they perform five or six concerts in breathtaking venues—from centuries-old cathedrals to bustling public squares.

We spoke with Beth Beccone, CSTP of Peak about her trip this summer, joining the students.

WHAT ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM YOUR RECENT TRIP?

First off, seeing the choir perform in Salzburg at the cathedral where Mozart was baptized. I mean, how often do you get to even be there, let alone hear a choir perform there? Hearing their voices was just magical. And watching the regular tourists walking in, people stopped and sat in the pews and really listened. To see how music translates across language boundaries, geographic boundaries, was really special.

You could even see the students really change. Watching them grow from the beginning of the tour to the end was one of the highlights. You can see how they get more confident with even checking into a hotel, advocating for themselves, fighting for the right foods they might need at a restaurant, or just navigating crowds and how to move in the world.

And performing in small towns, we got to go to the top of a glacier in July, so we were able to have a snowball fight in summer. That was pretty magical. And there was one town where the whole town came out. I think there were over 300 people in the audience. Not only did they enjoy the concert, they insisted on two encores. The mayor was there, he gave out gift bags, and the students were just eating it up. You could really see them understanding the impact that this had on themselves and also the community they performed for.

I’M SURE SEEING STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT SCHOOLS COME TOGETHER IS A HIGHLIGHT AS WELL.

That’s the other thing, watching them emerge, because some kids were the only person from their school. Watching them navigate that and grow and learn about a different part of the country, or even just a couple towns over. So, now they have that connection, and when they see them at a marching band event in the fall, or a state competition, they’ll recognize each other, and they have already have a connection. I watched a crew of young men that were from six different schools, and they found each other and created their own subgroup within the group. It was really fun.

FOR TEACHERS READING THIS, HOW CAN THEY GET THEIR STUDENTS OR SCHOOLS INVOLVED?

We will find room for them. If a director was interested in having their students participate, they would just contact AMA and say, “Hey, I’ve got three students that would be perfect for this.” They do have to be recommended by their directors, but all they need to do is contact Bruce, and he would make sure they get assigned to the correct tour, geographically. And some of the students go through the SYTA Youth Foundation for scholarships, because this is a perfect trip to apply scholarship funds to.

BUILDING BRIDGES

CChants of “Pass the John Lewis Voting Act” rang out as people shouted proudly and loudly. Step by step, I crossed the Selma Bridge holding a sign that read “Pass the John Lewis Voting Right Act” in my hands. I was in Selma, Alabama, on a Civil Rights Trail Trip with my high school. The journey down south was life-changing and perspective-altering for me. I still remember my reaction to visiting the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.

Massive red stone blocks hung from the ceiling by metal rods, each representing a county where people were lynched. I couldn’t even begin to count how many boulders were there, but I knew it had to be in the hundreds. My feet felt heavy as I walked down the path, my eyes glancing at the dozens of names and dates etched on each stone block. My hands traced over the names, feeling each bump and divot.

The word “unknown” was etched over and over again. I couldn’t imagine how many people died without their names recorded – how many lives were lost to lynching, something we could never fully account for. One steel plate stood out to me –the story of Henry Smith. He was lynched in front of a crowd of 10,000 people, as they picnicked with their children and collected souvenirs in the form of human remains. I had read history books about slavery and lynching, but it wasn’t until I came face to face with this monument and the stories of lynching, that I began to grasp how horrible it was. After visiting that memorial, I began to confront the history of America in a new way.

There is still so much work to be done, but every time I think back to crossing the bridge and the people around me, I AM FILLED WITH HOPE FOR OUR FUTURE...

A few days later, I visited other museums, learning about the Freedom Riders and activists like Martin Luther King Jr., Bernard Lafayette, Rosa Parks, and others who bravely stood on the front lines to fight for voting rights—despite being threatened, beaten, and jailed. The Selma Bridge Crossing is both a call to action and a commemoration of the efforts of civil rights activists and the events on Bloody Sunday. As I walked across that bridge, seeing people from different backgrounds, and hearing the chants for voting rights ring in my ear, I joined in. Marching across that bridge, I felt the urgency of the ongoing fight for voting rights and the weight of Bloody Sunday’s history.

There is still so much work to be done, but every time I think back to crossing the bridge and the people around me, I am filled with hope for our future because we represent a community of people tirelessly fighting for our rights and justice. When I returned to Seattle, the image of the bridge crossing remains vivid in my mind. I continued my environmental and civil advocacy work, knowing how fortunate I am to do so without being beaten for protesting. This trip was a life-changing experience for me as I confronted the brutal history of America, saw the reality of the lynchings, and marched hand in hand across the bridge with the hope that together, we could create a more inclusive and just society.
