Away Day This cross, made from Lego, was in Birdsedge chapel when we used the building for last year’s Away Day. The maker is unknown.

It was agreed at Church Council that we should have another Away Day next year on Saturday 12th May and that Birdsedge Chapel would again be a good venue.

Yes, maybe there is a place for Fidget Church!

The first Science and Faith conference was held on Thursday, 9th March, at Huddersfield University. Holmfirth Transition Town (HoTT) gave a presentation on their activities. One result is that St Mary’s Church Honley is planning to grow vegetables ‘free for the picking’. There is a project to turn the flower bed by the Parish Rooms into a vegetable patch for the benefit of everyone, much like those of Incredible Edible in Todmorden.

Who made this unholy mess?

The answer is– Jesus did! On entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday Jesus went into the Temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the stools of those who sold pigeons and said to them, “It is written in the Scriptures that God said, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer’ but you are making it a hideout for thieves!”

This was one of the five stations of the cross re-enacted in our church on Good Friday, a surprise set up for us by our minister.

Yorkshire Regional JPIT launch Joint Public Issues Team (JPIT) Yorkshire, which was launched in March brings a Christian voice and vision to public issues that affect the people of Yorkshire. It is the northern offshoot of national JPIT and is sponsored by the regional bodies of the Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed Churches The group’s honorary chairman, community activist and former MP John Battle, welcomed a hundred participants to the launch conference at Leeds Civic Hall. Anyone living in the area and interested in getting involved can make contact with the team through its Facebook page.

Honley Civic Society / Trinity Church walk Meet Trinity at 2.15pm for a ‘Spring walk' (usually Bluebells) Leader, Val.

KwaMashu gets jumping David and Pam Redfearn visited the Phakamisa project earlier this year. They took with them 70 jumpers to fit 3 to 6 year olds and these were divided between three schools supported by Phakamisa. KwaMashu is one such school.

The jumpers were knitted mainly by the Honley Knit and Natter group which meets in Honley library so a big thank you to them.

KwaMashu is a township 32 km north of Durban.

Some of South Africa's greats, including Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, came from here.

Phakamisa is one of the Overseas Missions supported by Trinity Church and is an outreach of Pinetown Methodist Church, Durban, South Africa.

St DUNSTAN

Dunstan (909 - 988) was the most popular saint in England for nearly two centuries, being famous for many stories about defeating the devil.

A story tells how as a monk Dunstan nailed a horseshoe to the Devil's hoof when he was asked to re-shoe the Devil's horse. This caused much pain, and Dunstan only agreed to remove the shoe and release the Devil after he promised never to enter a place where a horseshoe hangs over the door. They say that is why people still hang horse shoes over doorways.

St Dunstan is the patron saint of blacksmiths and bell ringers as well as goldsmiths and silversmiths. His Feast Day is 19 May, which is why the date year on the hallmarks on gold and silver runs from 19th to 18th May, and not the calendar year.

Tuesday Fellowship meetings—Reports by Rachel Boothroyd

Back into History, April 11th.

‘Items of local interest from the archives of Honley Civic Society’ was the subject of the speaker Peter Marshall on April 11th.

These were documents from as early as 1845 and included invoices, postcards, envelopes, anniversary hymn sheets, Honley Palladium programmes and many others featuring names from local businesses some still functioning today in the Honley area.

These were on show later and they brought back memories to those of our members who had lived in Honley all their lives.

The meeting was chaired by Joyce Draper.

The AGM on April 4th The money raised by the monthly meetings and the summer afternoon teas was used to give donations to Trinity Church, The Leprosy Mission and Action for Children. Additional donations were given to the speakers for the charities they supported.

Margaret Armitage thanked Secretary Margaret Sheppard for all the hard work she had put in over the past years. After the business part of the meeting the members got down to decorating polystyrene eggs. The results are on the back page.

After all these efforts we were ready to enjoy the substantial afternoon tea! The fortnightly meetings will start again in October but until then we can look forward to the monthly tea and cakes afternoons to be held on 2nd May, 13th June and 5th September.

Tour de Yorkshire Cycle Race SUNDAY afternoon, APRIL 30th The gruelling 194 km final stage of the race starts at 12.10pm at Bradford’s City Park and finishes about 5.15pm at Fox Valley, Sheffield. The route comes down Station Road from Farnley Tyas, then past the Jacob’s Well and along Woodhead Road to Holmfirth and Hade Edge. It should come through Honley about 4 pm.

Circuit Leisure Group The walk on 11th April from Almondbury Methodist church (rt) started off through the graveyard and down into Benholmley Wood, a well trodden path. The 18 of us followed paths through the wood and came out at Almondbury Wesleyan Cricket Ground. We crossed Kaye Lane to follow a path around Castle Hill. We came to Sharp Lane and climbing back up we came out near the Church. Tea was served in the church after which we had a quiz. The walk was led by Andrew Kerby. Next walk is on May 9th from Holmebridge, 11am. JV
