Honley Newsletter of the Honley Village Community Trust A voluntary organisation working for Honley village FRIENDS OF HONLEY KEEP BUSY Report by June MacLean Friends of Honley get a good response from the residents and community of Honley at their monthly litter picks. In January we had over 25 volunteers and in February over 20- what a brilliant response.

Honley Literati gather for the December Litter Pick Honley Literati gather for the December Litter Pick

With so many volunteers we can cover a large area around our Honley streets and parks to keep them litter free. We collect on average 25 black bin bags full each time so a massive difference. Well Done Everyone involved. As we are moving into spring and summer there will be lots more gardening/ weeding to get involved with and of course don’t forget the Graveyard Clearing which has carried on throughout the winter with some dedicated volunteers making a huge difference. Pop along and have a look. Please join us on the first Sunday of each month meeting outside the library at 10am . If you want to get emails letting you know what s happening please send your email address to junemac@talktalk.net

Honley Feast has new Ring Masters! Honley Feast has proved hugely successful since Honley Business Association (HBA) decided to revive it two years ago. The event in September has grown both in popularity and size, to such an extent that members of the HBA felt they needed to find new organisers to pass the baton on to, which would enable the Business Association to continue to give proper attention to Honley’s Christmas Lights and Christmas Together street market events.. The search was therefore on to find people who were keen to ensure that the Honley Feast would remain a key event in the village calendar. Adele Oxley, Chairman of the HBA said “We were delighted when Jon Green and Rob Kelly of Holmfirth Media approached us to offer their whole-hearted support to organise the Feast. They both live in our village, and have previous experience of organising events. We have every confidence that the Feast will continue to grow and be as enjoyable as ever in their capable hands.” If you would like to be part of the Honley Feast, or would like to be involved in any way, then Jon or Rob would love to hear from you: Please email Jon on littlegreenman2000@yahoo.co.uk or Rob on keirbrt@gmail.com. Regards and Thanks June Mclean HBA Secretary

TRUST LAND VOLUNTEERS report by Neil Littlewood The weather was very much against the volunteers this winter. December saw us sorting piles of stone at the bottom of the Croft field and assessing other work to be done through the spring and summer. In January the volunteers were down Magdale at the side of the dam, where we have planted the fruit trees, clearing the brambles that are strangling them. Weather permitting in February we can carry on with that and finish it. Anybody wishing to help us maintain our beautiful village and surroundings will be most welcome; we meet at the old chapel in Honley cemetery at 10 am on the second Sunday in the month. If you need more information call Neil on 07766 742 140. The Trust is helping to save one of our rarest resident birds Willow tits are the most rapidly declining resident bird in the UK, we’ve lost 94% of them since the 1970s. They are small, stocky and quietly coloured birds, between blue tits and great tits in size, but with no yellow, green or blue colouring. They have a large sooty-black cap extending to the back of the neck and a small untidy black bib. It is mid-brown above, with whiter cheeks and pale buff-grey underparts.. Willow tits prefer damp scrub, and damp woodlands with a dense scrub layer. They typically use vegetation of a height of 2–4 metres, especially containing willow, hawthorn and elder. They require rotten standing deadwood such as willow, elder, birch or alder stumps, in which they excavate their own nest holes. This is where we’re hoping to help by providing good nesting sites for them. Recently, following advice from tree specialists the Village Trust took out a fallen Birch tree and larger Birch near the road at Magdale and instead of clearing away the deadwood we followed further advice this time from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and placed some of the longer birch trunks against other trees at the right height with a view to encouraging these enchanting little birds to take up residence in Honley.

HONLEY VILLAGE HALL report by Marcia Murray

The Village Hall will shortly be running at almost capacity level. La Danse Francaise (see below) Two new groups have started there in the New Year, both filling a gap in local care services. Ability Options run by Lynn Allen is offering a day centre with meaningful activities for adults and young people with learning difficulties and additional needs. As well as private referrals Kirklees is likely to refer some of the people they cannot offer places to. See Village Hall regular users section for contact details. The other group is Holme Valley Dementia Group for people with suspected or diagnosed early to mid-stage dementia. This group is run by Time Together which is part of the Denby Dale Centre who already run groups in Kirkburton, Lindley, Emley and Birkby. As well as openings for clients of the service the organisers are looking for volunteer helpers and drivers. Call 01484 860077 These long term bookings is good news for the Village Trust as income generated from hire charges go towards the upkeep and running expenses of the Hall. Clean up by Community Payback team The Village Trust requested help from the Community Payback team to help clear the area to the side and rear of the Village Hall which had become almost impassable and overgrown with trees and bushes. Community Payback is a punishment which requires offenders to pay back the community for the crimes they have committed. They have to carry out demanding unpaid work between 40-300 hours as a sentence from the courts So early on a cold January morning four young men together with their supervisor turned up with all the necessary equipment needed to do the job. They worked hard all day just stopping for a hot drink and a wedge of home made parkin made by HVCT committee member Carol who manned the hall while they were working. – A job well done. FRENCH DANCE AT HONLEY VILLAGE HALL In January, Le Vendredi Danse (a group of local French dance and music enthusiasts) moved their regular monthly sessions to Honley Village Hall. Led by the house band (Les Habitués), and our dance tutors Keith and Anita, lots of people from Honley and further afield have been discovering how much fun a French social dance can be. The music and dances are easy and quick to learn – a bit like simple ceilidh dances. The music is distinctly French in origin. If
