50+ 교육 종사자를 위한 콘텐츠 워크숍 2017. 09. 25. (월) 14:00~17:30 직장생활을 하던 이들이 퇴직이라는 삶의 큰 전환을 맞이하는 것을 주제로 한 워크숍이다. 이 워크숍의 목적은 숙련된 교육 종사자들에게 ‘퇴직 전 워크숍(pre-retirement)’ 모델이 어떻게 조직되는지 경험할 수 있도록 돕는 것이다. 워크숍을 통해 참석자들이 퇴직 전 준비사항에 대한 지식을 습득하고 이해할 수 있도록 돕는다. 이번 워크숍을 통해 서울시의 50+교육 종사자들이 퇴직을 준비하고 있는 이들을 위한 효과적인 워크숍 운영에 도움이 되기를 바란다.

워크숍 하는 동안에 4 개의 활동을 진행하며 6~7 건의 토론이 진행된다.



Organization of the ToT Workshop.  The workshop room is furnished with 8-10 tables and chairs for 5-4 participants at each table  The tables are composed with participants from different departments – with nameplates.  The screen where the projector displays powerpoints can be seen from each seat.  During the workshop there will be 4 exercises and 6-7 short discussions in groups/plenary.  It will be fine with a 15-20 minute break midway in the 2½ hour workshop.

2. 요약 요약 제3기 인생의 커리어를 다시 생각하다. 지역차원의 퇴직준비 워크숍

제3기 커리어로 불리는 이 프로젝트는 일의 전환과 제3기 커리어를 위한 새로운 모델의 어려움과 관련하여 가장 중요한 사회적 문제 중 하나를 설명하다. (생애기간 증가)에 따라 다수의 장년층 근로자는 직장생활을 연 장할 필요가 있다. 직장에서도 중고령층 근로자를 보유하고 유치하기 위해 더 많은 연령 친화적 관례들을 발 전시켜 나가야 한다. 개인에게 언제 어떻게 직장을 떠나야 하는지의 의사결정은 매우 어려운 과정이지만, 이 결정은 안타깝게도 여가와 퇴직에 관한 고정관념의 의해 이루어지고 있다.

EU국가에서 제3기 커리어를 다시 생각해보고 더 길게 일하기 위해서는, 관리자와 중고령 근로자 모두 연령 친화적 관례와 제3커리어 인생을 어떻게 발전시켜나갈지에 대한 최적의 혜안을 갖는 것이 중요하다. 관리자 가 만들어갈 연령친화적 관례는 국가 차원의 캠페인을 통해 확실한 첫걸음을 내딛을 수 있다.

‘제3인생의 커리어’ 프로젝트는 중고령층 근로자와 관리자들을 위해 지역 차원을 워크숍으로 준비되며, 2011 년 9월 시작 이후 총 220명의 근로자와 60명의 관리자들이 참여하였다.

220명이 참여한 워크숍 평가개요에 따르면, 다음과 같은 통계를 보여준다.

39%의 참가자가 건강습관을 개선하고 운동으로 건강을 유지하기로 결정함

44%의 참가자가 봉사활동에 더 많이 참여하기로 결정함

이 워크숍은 일을 연장하고, 목적과 열정 그리고 가능하다면 수입원까지 얻을 수 있는 새로운 제3인생의 커리 어의 돌파구를 마련할 수 있게 되었다. 이 지역에서는 이틀간 워크숍에 참여한 이후 주변의 일반적 퇴직이 아 닌, 봉사활동에 활발하게 참여하고 지속적으로 기여할 수 있는 건강하고 높은 교육 수준을 갖춘 60대 이상의 새로운 중고령층 세대가 증가하고 있다.

‘제3의 커리어’ 워크숍 모델은 지역, 국가 나아가 EU에서도 다양한 여러 가지 방법을 통해 성공적으로 확산되 었다. 이 모델을 개발한지 3년이 지났는데, 지난해 브뤼셀, 코펜하겐, 베를린, 밀라노의 여러 유럽회의에 초청 받아 본 모델을 소개하였다. 또한 2010년 폴란드, 독일 이탈리아 그리스의 파트너들과 퇴직준비 워크숍(액티 브에이징을 향한 지름길)을 주제로 한 최종보고서를 첨부한 그륀투비학습 파트너십(Grundtvig Learning Partnership)을 체결하였다.

2011년 EU국가 파트너들을 위해 5일간 퇴직준비 카운슬링에 대한 ‘Train-the-trainer’ 워크숍을 열 예정이

제3의 커리어를 다시 생각해보기

가능한 역량을 파악하여 완전한 나 자신의 모습을 갖추는 것이 삶의 유일한 목표이다. 로버트 루이스 스티븐슨 (Robert Louis Stevenson)

퇴직 – 인생의 가장 어려운 변화

퇴직은 한 사람의 인생에서 가장 어려운 변화이며 전환이다. 다수의 사람들은 직장을 떠나 완전히 자유로워 지는 것을 문제라고 생각하지 않는다. 또한 퇴직 과정에서 겪게 되는 급격한 변화에 대한 대중적 인식이 부족 하기도 하다. 그러나 미국의 퇴직자를 대상으로 이루어진 설문조사에 따르면, 응답자의 41%는 퇴직이 다른 인생의 변화 – 결혼, 출산, 자녀의 독립 등 – 보다 가장 힘들었다고 답했다.

게다가 퇴직은 일괄적으로 겪는 과정이 아니다. 언제, 어떻게 퇴직할지는 개인마다 모두 다르다. 퇴직은 개인 마다 다르고, 건강에 따라서도 달라진다. 따라서 중고령층이 언제, 어떻게 퇴직할 지 또한 정해진 퇴직연령과 퇴직 방식을 따르지 않고, 그들의 상황에 맞는 결정을 내릴 수 있도록 역량을 갖추는 것이 필요하다.

여타 인생의 다른 변화와 마찬가지로, 퇴직 과정은 단지 개인 복지뿐만 아니라, 사회의 필요에 따라서 고려하 고 결정해야 한다. 퇴직패턴은 EU국가의 경제 및 복지 상황에 기여할 수 있기 때문이다.

인구변화의 위협속에 노동시장과 지역사회를 떠날 준비가 되지 않은 중고령층은 퇴직 시기를 신중하게 선택 함에 따라 EU 내 평균 퇴직연령은 증가하고 있다.

좋은 카운슬링은 생명줄

인생의 중요한 변화를 마주한 많은 이들에게 좋은 카운슬링과 코칭은 생명줄이 될 수 있다. 카운슬링을 통해 자칫 새로운 시작과 가능성을 무색케 하는 어려움과 걱정은 줄어든다. 또한 눈에 띄게 흥미로운 점은 노동 시 장에 진입하게 될 경우에는 실제로 쉽게 상담기회를 마주하게 된다는 사실이다. 그러나 노동시장을 떠나고 인 생의 가장 어려운 변화를 맞닥뜨리게 될 경우, 은행이나 연금펀드와 같은 재정문제 이외의 다른 조언을 해주 는 사람은 없다. 결국 풀타임 직장의 마지막 날이 지난 후 인생의 가장 중요한 문제에 관한 상담을 향한 조용 한 외침만 들릴 뿐이다.

퇴직준비 워크샵- 제3의 인생, 삶의 질을 높이는 지름길

퇴직준비 워크샵은 퇴직이라는 어려운 변화 과정을 겪기 시작한 중고령층을 대상으로 카운슬링 및 코칭을 제 공하는 다소 새로운 개념이다.

중고령층 참석자들은 퇴직준비 워크샵의 목표인 아래사항을 이행한다.

● 본인의 강점과 역량을 더욱 인식하고 지속적으로 개발하여 최대한 오래도록 활용한다. ● 가장 최근 현직 시절의 커리어 그리고 향후 커리어 모두에 있어 본인만의 목표와 방법을 찾도록 준비한다. ● 기존의 편견에 따라 새로운 인생을 판단할 것이 아니라, 노화와 퇴직에 관한 기존의 이미지 및 고정관념을 타파하도록 한다. ● 제3 기 인생에서 의미있고 보람찬 커리어를 위해 본인만의 맞춤화된 방식을 만들어 간다.

퇴직준비 워크샵은 무엇보다도 중고령층을 위한 워크샵이다. 이 워크샵을 통해 많은 중고령층들이 제3의 인 생에 새로운 커리어를 확보할 수 있는 지름길을 발견한다. 또한, 퇴직준비 워크샵은 사회를 위한 워크샵이기 도 하다. 이 워크샵 코스가 인구변화를 겪고 있는 모든 EU 회원국에게 최고의 해결책을 어느정도는 제시할 수 있다고 말할 수 있다. 액티브애이징을 통한 더 나은 삶

먼저 몇가지 중요한 방식에 따라 중고령층의 특성을 정의할 수 있다. 나이가 듦에 따라, 부분적으로는 서로 다 른 태생적 특성, 혹은 서로 다른 직장 및 주거 상황, 의외로 노화 과정을 받아들이는 감정과 태도에 의해 사람 들은 점점 더 달라진다. 비슷하게 태어나지만 각자의 고유한 방법으로 살아간다. 생애 주기 동안 서로의 차이 점이 커짐에 따라 중고령층들은 퇴직시기로 전환함에 있어 다양한 방법을 선택한다.

중년의 커리어를 대체하는 본인만의 제3의 인생의 커리어 구축을 위한 맞춤화된 방법을 모색하기 위해서 대 부분의 중고령층은 노화에 대한 부정적인 이미지에 비판적인 시각을 갖고 조금 더 진정한 그리고 힘을 실어줄 수 있는 이미지로 대체해야 한다. TV, 영화, 연하장 심지어 직장에서의 문화는 우리에게 강력한 정신 및 감정 적 영향력을 발휘하여 노화에 대한 부정적인 이미지를 그려낸다. 안타깝게도 젊음의 미덕만이 지속적으로 강 조되는 상황이다.

이러한 이미지와 변화를 극복하는 것은 어려울 수 있다. 그렇다면 본인이 생각했던 노화가 사실 다른 의미를 갖는다면 어떨까? 만약 노화는 단지 사회구조일 뿐이고 나이를 먹는다는 것이 본인에게 달린 일이라면? 카운

슬링과 새로운 방법을 모색하려는 다른 중고령층의 공동 지원을 받는 퇴직 전 워크샵을 통해 노화에 대한 고 정관념을 쉽게 타파하고 빠르게 액티브 에이징을 실천할 수 있다.

퇴직준비 워크샵 - EU의 액티브 에이징을 향한 지름길 고령인구가 늘어나고 젊은층이 줄어드는 EU의 인구변화는 단기적이고 장기적인 관점에서 모든 EU 국가에 다양한 도전과제를 부여하였다. 이러한 상황에 적극 대처하기 위해 유럽 위원회(European Commission)는 여러 이니셔티브를 발족시켰다. 이 전략을 간단하게 설명하자면 건강한 노화와 노동시장 및 지역사회에 적극 적인 기여를 위한 중고령층을 지원한다는 내용이다.

인구변화에 있어 EU 내 각 국가 상황이 매우 다르지만 모든 회원국은 유럽 위원회의 활력있는 노후, 액티브 에이징(Active Ageing)에 관한 권고사항을 이행하도록 노력해야 한다.

위와 같은 전략의 성공적 이행 여부는 의사결정권자인 중고령층 근로자 및 중고령층 퇴직자에게 달려있다. 결 국 모든 중고령층은 일을 계속 할지, 자원봉사에 기여할지 혹은 좀 더 건강한 라이프스타일을 선택할지를 결 정해야 한다. 따라서 EU 전략을 이행하는데 있어 필수적인 첫걸음으로 의사결정권자와 함께 미래 계획에 대 한 대화가 분명히 필요하다. 이러한 대화에 있어 퇴직 전 워크샵을 명백한 플랫폼으로 활용할 수 있다.

퇴직 전 워크숍 콘텐츠

위에 기술한 바와 같이, 퇴직 전 워크숍의 목표는 중고령층을 설득하여 일을 더 오래하게 하거나, 지역사회의 문화 및 사회활동에 참여시키려는 것이 아니다. 의사결정권자와 함께 로버트 L. 시티븐슨 (Robert L. Stevenson)의 명언: “가능한 역량을 파악하여 완전한 나 자신의 모습을 갖추는 것이 삶의 유일한 목표이다” 와 같은 맥락에서 대화가 이루어져야 한다.

기존의 커리어에서 중고령층으로서의 커리어 전환을 고려하여, 60세 전후의 중고령층을 위한 워크숍의 전반 적 목적은 참석자들이 아래 질문에 본인만의 답을 모색할 수 있도록 돕는 것이다.

● 어떻게 원하는 바를 달성할 것인가? ● 달성 후 이를 어떻게 유지하고 환원할 것인가?

중고령층 간의 그리고 각국 상황의 차이에 따라 일부 중고령층은 일자리를 더 오래 유지할 수 도 있고, 일부는 퇴직 후 개인 및 가족과의 활동에 보너스 인생을 할애하거나 혹은 다수는 봉사단체에 가입한다. 그러나 대부 분의 중고령층들은 어떤 선택을 할지라도 의미, 목적 그리고 열정을 간절히 모색하길 원한다.

노후 커리어의 의미와 목적을 발견할 수 있도록 퇴직 전 워크샵을 통해 같은 연배의 사람들과 새로운 가능성 을 논하고 트레이너로부터 격려를 받을 수 있다. 현재까지 이 워크샵은 매우 탁월한 프로그램을 제공해 왔다. 퇴직여부와 관련없이 모든 중고령층은 워크샵에 참석할 기회가 주어져야 한다.

퇴직 전 워크샵은 아래 주제에 초점을 맞추어 덴마크 오르후스(Aarhus) 지역에서 성공적으로 개발되고 이행 되었다.

● 퇴직에 관한 오랜 고정관념 타파 본인만의 노후 커리어를 찾기 위해서는 퇴직에 관한 오래된 이미지를 떨쳐버려야 한다. 본인만의 방법을 모색 하기 전에 해묵은 이미지를 파악하고 이야기함으로써 의식적 고정관념을 허무는 것이 좋은 시작이 될 수 있다.

● 핵심 열량 발견 노후 커리어를 발견하기 위한 최고의 이정표로써 전체 인생에서 ‘내가 무엇을 했을 때 최고였는지’에 관한 경 험을 찾아보도록 한다. 중고령층인 내가 어떠한 사람인지 그리고 내가 할 수 있는 일이 무엇인지 파악할 수 있 다. 그렇다면, 어떻게 그 일을 할 수 있는지 생각해본다.

● 목적과 열정- 급여 여부 말하기엔 쉬울지 몰라도, 열정을 발견하면 절대 퇴직하지 않는다. 바로 이 순간 새로운 중고령층이 인생의 의 미와 목적을 발견할 수 있는 방법은 대부분 DIY(doing-it-yourself: 본인이 직접하기) 일자리임을 마지막 예 제연습에서 강조한다. 나 자신보다 중요한 삶의 목적과 의미를 모색하는 활동은 댓가가 있을수도 있고 없을 수도 있다.

2011년 봄 덴마크 오르후스에서 열린 5차례의 퇴직 전 워크샵에서 92명의 참석자들의 평가에 근거하여 마지 막으로 중요한 결론이 도출되었다. 중고령층들은 동년배의 사람들과 열띤 토론을 통해, 본인의 강점을 좀 더 의식할 수 있고, 퇴직에 관한 고정관념과 이미지를 꿰뚫어 보며 제 3 인생의 의미있는 성취감을 느낄 수 있도 록 새로운 방법을 만들어간다. 다수의 중고령층은 워크샵 참석 후 노후 계획을 수정하고 활력있는 노후

(Active Ageing)를 추구하기로 결정하였다.

워크샵 후 참가자의 평가 결과에 따르면:

● 38%는 일자리에 더 오래 머물기로 결정 ● 44%는 자원봉사활동을 하기로 결정 ● 39%는 건강 습관을 개선하기로 결정 ● 53%는 네트워크를 활성화하기로 결정

위의 결과에 따르면 퇴직 전 워크샵은 활력있는 노후를 향한 지름길이며 EU 인구변화에 있어 최고의 해결책 이라고 명확하고 타당하게 말할 수 있다.

향후 건강에 대한 우려와 근로조건으로 인해 퇴직을 미루기도 하지만, 퇴직 카운슬링 후에는 활력있는 노후를 실현할 수 있다.

게다가 평가 결과에 따르면 위 코스는 건강한 노화 및 독립적인 삶뿐만이 아니라 중고령층이 취업시장에서 그 리고 지역사회 내의 봉사 및 배려 활동을 통해 활력있는 노후가 가능하도록 동기부여를 해준다.

EU 국민 및 정치인에게 퇴직 준비 카운슬링 코스는 기존의 퇴직패턴의 확실한 대안책임을 명백히 알릴 수 있 다. 이로 인해 유럽 사회가 혜택을 보는 것뿐만 아니라 퇴직 후 개인역량, 사회적 네크워크, 본인의 자존감을 잃지 않고 행복한 삶을 살게 할 수 있다.

궁극적인 꿈: EU내 퇴직 전 워크숍 의무화

현재 60-80세 세대는 역사상 가장 건강하고 잘 교육 받은 연령층임이 틀림없다. 만약 이 중고령층의 역량과 인적자원을 활용할 방안을 마련하지 못한다면, 역사상 막대한 자원 및 역량 손실을 경험할 것이다.

퇴직 전 워크숍은 인구 변화 및 활력있는 노후 개선을 위한 종합적인 해결책으로 여겨지지 않지만 이제는 주 요 의사결정자인 중고령층과 대화를 해야한다. 오르후스에서 개최된 최근 코스에 대한 평가와 결과에 따르면 이 워크숍이 매우 유망함을 알 수 있다. 궁극적 목표는 EU내 퇴직 전 워크숍의 의무화이다. 이 목표를 현실화 하기 위한 첫걸음으로써 가능하다면 EU 차원에서 2012 액티브 에이징을 위한 유럽의 해 (European Year of Active Ageing in 2012)와 함께 일을 추진해야 한다.

2. Summary Summary Rethink third age careers - pre-retirement workshops at local level.

The project called ’A Third Career’ adresses one of the most important social problems in relation to the difficult transition from working life and difficulties in rethinking models for new third age careers. Due to the demographic development it is necessary, that more senior employees prolong their working life. At workplace level it is vital to develop more age-friendly practices in order to attract and retain senior employees. At individual level decision-making on when and how to leave the job can be a most difficult proces – unfortunately often based on old stereotype myth concerning leisure and retirement.

To rethink new careers in the third age and to obtain longer working lives in all EU member states it is important, that both managers and senior employees - the decision-makers on prolonging working lives - get the best adequate knowledge on age-friendly practices and on how to develop new third age careers. National campaigns on age-friendly practices adressed to managers can surely be a first fine step. But local workshops for senior employees – is an important second step.

The project ’A Third Career’ organizes workshops at local level for senior employees and for managers. Since the project started in September 2011 we have organized workshops for 220 seniors and for 60 managers.

Evaluation schemes from workshops for 220 senior employees shows, that  38% of the participants decided - to stay longer on the job  39% of the participants decided – to improve their health habbits and keep fit  44% of the participants decided – to spend more time on voluntary work These workshops mark a breakthrough in prolonging working lives and rethinking new third age careers filled with purpose, passion and - maybe - a paycheck. Instead of traditional retirement where you just observe from the side-line, a growing number of the new 60+ generation of healthy and better-educated seniors decide to continue being a part of the game and keep on contributing - at workplaces and in voluntary work. Just after attending a 2-days workshop at local level.

The workshop model of ’A Third Career’ has been successfully disseminated in many different ways at local, national and European level.

It is now three years ago I developed the model. During the last year I have been invited to present the model at European Conferences in Brussels, Copenhagen, Berlin, Milan.

In 2010 I formed a Grundtvig Learning Partnership on what I called ’Pre-retirement counselling – a shortcut to active ageing’ with partners from Poland, Germany, Italy and Greece. I attach our final report (155 pages).

In 2011 I designed a five-days ’Train-the-trainer’ workshop on pre-retirement counselling for partners from all member states. Unfortunately it was cancelled. I attach the programme.

At national level our activities have been publiced in newpapers and magazines (23 articles) and in radio (1 hour) and tv ( 1 hour in September 2012).

Retirement - a most difficult transition in life.

To retire from working life is one of the most difficult changes and transitions in life. Many people do not think that leaving the working week behind them and getting ultimate freedom will be a problem. In addition, there is a general lack of public awareness of all the radical changes retirees will have to go through in the process of retirement.

However, a survey among retired persons in the USA showed that of all the major changes and transitions in a life time such as getting married, having children, children leaving the home etc.– a majority of 41% found retirement the most difficult.

Furthermore, retirement is not just a standard process. When and how to retire may vary from one human being to another. Retirement age may be as individual and varying as body age. And ways of retirement may be as flexible as careers before retirement.

Consequently it is need to qualify seniors for making an appropriate decision: on when and how to retire, and in a way not just following fixed retirement ages or standard retirement patterns.

Just as most other transitions of a lifetime, the process of retirement may be considered and decided upon. Not only for one’s own welfare, but for the needs of society as well.

Retirement patterns happens to make contributions to the state of economies and welfare of all EU member states.

Deliberate individual choice by seniors on retirement age may increase average retirement age in EU to the benefit of both active seniors not ready for leaving the labour market and European communities under threat by demographic developments.

Good counselling can be a lifeline When confronting important changes in life, many people have found that good counselling and coaching can be a lifeline. This help can shorten the period where difficulties and worries can overshadow the new beginnings and possibilities at the end of the tunnel. It is also interesting to notice that, when you enter the labour market, there are many good counselling opportunities that you can easily access. But when you leave the labour market

and confront the most difficult change in life, there is nothing! - except maybe some advice on financial issues from a bank or pension fund. But after the last day on the full-time job, there is often a screaming silence concerning counselling on the most important issue in life.

Pre-retirement workshops - a shortcut to improve quality of life in the third age Pre-retirement workshops are a rather new concept, providing counselling and coaching for seniors entering the difficult process of transition into retirement.

It is the objective of a pre-retirement workshop, that senior participants will:    

Be more conscious of their own strengths and competencies, and continually develop and use them as long as possible.

Be better prepared to find his or her own goals and ways, both in the last part of their professional career on the job and in the years beyond.

Be able to see through traditional images and stereotypes on ageing and retirement and not to let their new life be predicted by outdated prejudices.

Be able to create his or her own tailor-made way to a meaningful and fullfilling career in the third age.

The pre-retirement workshops first of all will be for the benefit of the seniors themselves.

For many seniors a pre-retirement workshop is a shortcut to a new career in the third age.

But most interestingly pre-retirement workshops are also for the benefit of the society. In fact, it is tempting, and not at all irrelevant to claim, that pre-retirement courses might be one of the best answers to the demographic challenge facing all EU member states.

Better quality of life in active ageing Seniors are, first of all, characterized by being different in several important ways. As they grow older, people differ more and more from each other, partly because of different genes, partly related to different working and living conditions, and, surprisingly, also because of different feelings of and attitudes to the ageing process. We are born like copies, but we die as originals. These increasing differences during the life span also means, that seniors choose a diversity of different ways in the transition into retirement.

To find a tailor made way to your own third age career replacing the mid-life career, almost all seniors need to have a critical look at negative images of ageing and stereotypes on retirement, and replace them with more authentic and empowering images. Our culture in television, movies, greeting cards and even in the workplaces, exerts a strong mental and emotional influence over us with its negative messages about ageing. The virtues of youth are unfortunately, constantly reinforced.

It can be difficult to overcome such images and change. But what if ageing doesn't mean what you might have thought it did? What if ageing is a social construction and growing older is largely up to one self? A pre-retirement workshop with counselling and the collective support of other seniors committed to finding new ways, can make it easier to overcome the challenges of age stereotypes and also achieve active ageing more quickly.

Pre-retirement workshops – a shortcut to active ageing in EU The demographic development in EU, with more older and fewer younger people, creates a lot of different challenges in all EU member states - both in a short and a long term perspective. To cope with these demographic challenges in a proactive way the European Commission has taken many initiatives. This can be shortly expressed in the strategy: Empowering older people to age in good health and to contribute more actively to the labour market and to their communities.

Though the demographic challenges are surprisingly different from one member state to another, all member states in one way or another tries to implement the recommendations on active ageing from the European Commission:   

To promote active ageing in employment To promote active ageing in the community through volunteering and caring To promote healthy ageing and independent living

If the implementation of this strategy is going to succeed or not - it all depends on the decision makers. In this case the decision makers, are of course, the senior employees, the senior citizens and the senior retirees. In the end, every single senior has to decide if he or she is going to: prolong their working life, contribute in voluntary work or have a more healthy lifestyle. So it is obvious - that the essential first step in implementing the EU strategy on solving the demographic challenge will be to get in contact with the decision makers and have a dialog on their future plans. A pre-retirement workshop is the evident platform for such a dialogue.

The content of a pre-retirement course As described above, it is not the objectives of a pre-retirement course to persuade seniors following the course to stay longer on the job nor to be involved in cultural or social activities in the local communities. A dialog with the decisions makers takes place in the sense expressed by Robert L. Stevenson: 'To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life'.

The overall purpose of a course for people around 60 years considering the transition from the early career into the senior career – is to assist and guide the participants to find their very own answers on the following questions:    

Who am I – now?

What do I want?

How do I get there?

How do I sustain it – and give back?

Depending on individual differences among seniors and differences in national conditions – some seniors decide to stay longer in the job, others quit the job and use their bonus hours in personal and family activities, while many join volunteer organisations and so on.

But all – or almost all seniors – are eagerly searching to find meaning, purpose and passion in the third age career – whatever it might be.

To assist seniors in finding a way to meaning and purpose in the senior career – a preretirement workshop where you can discuss new possibilitites with other seniors and get inspiration from trainers – is a very good offer. An offer all seniors should have the opportunity to attend – no matter if it’s before or after retirement.

A pre-retirement workshop developed and implemented with great success in Aarhus, Denmark focus on the following themes: 

Kick out your old stereotypes on retirement It’s difficult for many seniors to find their own senior career, before they have kicked out traditional images of retirement. A good start is to identify and discuss such old-fashioned images – breaking down mental barriers before planning your own way.



Identify your core competencies The best milestone on the way to your senior career is to identify examples of ‘what you did when you were best’ from your whole life. As a senior you now know who you have become, and what you want and that you can do it. Then go for it – and find out how to get there.



Purpose and passion – with or without - a paycheck Find a passion and you will never retire from that – sounds more easy than it is.

During the final exercises it’s important to emphasize, that at this moment of history it is mostly a DIY (doing-it-yourself) job for the new generations of seniors to find their new ways to meaning and purpose. Either in paid or unpaid acitivities – where you can find a purpose and meaning more significant than your self .

The final important conclusion is based on evaluation by 92 participants at five preretirement course held in spring 2011 in Aarhus, Denmark. When seniors, through intense dialogs with other committed seniors, become more conscious of their own strengths, and are able to see through stereotyped imprints and images of retirement and create new ways to a meaningful and fulfilling life in third age - a majority of seniors following the workshops change plans and decide a life in active ageing.

The results from the post evaluation by participants showed that:    

38 % decided - to stay longer on the job 44 % decided – to become volunteers 39 % decided - to improve their health habits 53 % decided - to improve their network

The results demonstrates very clearly, that it is not irrelevant to claim, that pre-retirement workshops are a shortcut to active ageing and the best answer to the demographic challenges in EU.

Concern for health and working conditions in working places makes later retirement possible, but counselling on retirement makes it happen.

Furthermore, the results demonstrates that courses motivate seniors for active ageing in employment and in the community through volunteering & caring as well as healthy ageing and independent living.

Courses for pre-retirement counselling may make it obvious and clear to people and to politicians in all EU countries, that there certainly are alternatives to traditional retirement patterns. Such alternatives may not only benefit European communities. They may provide seniors with a happier life without loosing personal competencies, social networks and feeling of importance due to retirement.

The ultimate dream: Pre-retirement courses - compulsory in EU. There is no doubt that the current generation of 60 to 80 year-olds are the healthiest and the most well educated ever in history. If we do not learn to develop and to use the competencies and the resources of these groups of seniors, we could experience the greatest loss of resources and competencies ever in history.

Pre-retirement courses are not seen as an overall answer to the demographic challenges or to improve active ageing. But dialogs with the primary decision makers – the seniors themselves - is a first important step. The evaluations and results of recent courses held in Aarhus are indeed very promising. To make pre-retirement courses compulsory in EU is the ultimate goal. The first step in realizing the dream could be initiated at EU level – hopefully, in conjunction with the European Year of Active Ageing in 2012.
