Understanding SEO ... In business, a lot of us understand the need for a website, but sadly many of us complain they just don't work, that the return on investment is hard to justify. Unfortunately most people who design websites just don't understand the importance of SEO, which means Search Engine Optimisation. Preparing your website to rank well in the search engines needs to be done at the very beginning, even before the first page is created, or you face costly 'improvements' to your website that in all likelihood mean your site will look the same but be better structured to rank.

The code used in your website is absolutely critical for success, without which you are fighting an uphill battle against better optimised competition. Your web developer should make sure your site is designed using accessible standards, that headers are properly coded, that the text used is keyword rich, and that photos are correctly tagged. Ranking well in search engines isn't easy for most business websites, but not starting the way you mean to finish is a recipe for failure. Talk to your website designer and ask them what they intend doing as they design your site to ensure you are ready to rank in the search engines from the beginning. If they immediately backtrack or tell you it isn't important, well, perhaps your developer doesn't understand why search engine ranking is important to you. Instead, ask them to produce a report detailing what they'll be doing for you and how they plan to design the website, at least this way you'll be able to get a second opinion before committing to spending your money. All websites designed by Costa Graphics adhere to these rules. We understand that the decision to pay for SEO may take place after the initial purchase of a website, hence keeping it simple and affordable for small business owners. Home & Garden

Many holiday home owners are still arriving for their first visit of the year! Some are opening their doors to come face to face with mould and damp damage.

We all know that the construction of property is not the same as in the UK, they don’t need to be. Unless!! You shut up and leave for a few months. What happens then is that the air inside the property stagnates. The problem is not the temperature but the continuous warming of the air throughout the day, swelling with moisture then at night cooling, leaving condensation on walls, ceiling, clothes, almost everything in a home contains nutrients for mildew spores to thrive on. Many people treat the damp with disinfectants, mildew remover even re-

move the plaster. The problem is they have to do it every year. There is a product that can protect your property throughout the year. It is simple, solarpowered system that keeps the air in your house clean, fresh and dry all year round even when you are not there. The advantage being once purchased there are no running costs. What Makes 100%? What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%. How about achieving 103%? What makes up 100% in life?

A Lesson about Life ... On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."

The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty years and I'll give back to you the other forty?" And God agreed again...... On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God. "You asked for it." So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.

The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"

And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

So God agreed.....

Life has now been explained to you.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" 8

On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years."

And God agreed......

on the side of your rubbish bin .. This was sent to Martin from Calahonda, by friends of his in Australia Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) is the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world. It is known for its ability to crack coconuts with its strong pincers

They eat coconuts for a living! How would you like to be on an island and come across a crab that is more than 3 feet from head to tail and weighs up to 40 pounds, with a pair of large pincers strong enough to open coconuts! They can climb trees too, but they only eat coconuts that have already fallen to the ground. Coconut crab meat has been considered a local delicacy.

in order to eat the contents. It is sometimes called the robber crab because some coconut crabs are rumored to steal shiny items such as pots and silverware from houses and tents . The coconut crab is a large edible land crab related to the hermit crab, and are found in the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans .

Ladies…have you heard of Minx yet? Chipped toes are a major style faux pas but we have the perfect solution: Minx Minx Nail Armour has quickly become the new addictive fashion craze in Hollywood: Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Lily Allen, Lady Gaga , Pamela Anderson, Fergie, Carmen Electra & Beyonce are just a few celebs who have been spotted sporting the hot Minx designs.

There’s nothing worse after a relaxing pedicure than waiting for nail polish to dry… and then smudging it when you put your shoes back on. Minx is a hard-wearing and longerlasting alternative to a standard polish; after shaping, buffing and filing your tootsies, a single coating is applied and you are ready to go – no drying required. It is easily removed, again with heat, by either the manicurist or by the client. Minx is available in a huge variety of designs, colours and metalics.

An added bonus is that Minx is friendly to the environment and does not require chemicalsto apply or to remove, so don’t feel guilty – Get Minx’d today with Simply Nailz by Heidi. Simply Nailz is predominantly mobile, therefore I will come to you. I can also be found in Elle Morgan Lounge, Laguna Village on Sundays and Wednesdays from 11.00 and Princess Studios, Marina Banus (opposite El Corte Ingles) on Saturdays (by appointment only). Further venues to be confirmed. Why not hold a Minx-Me party with great hostess incentives? Contact Heidi 676535432 or email heidi@minxsimplynailz.com www.minxsimplynailz.com (Treatment includes file, cuticle tidy and application) HOT OFF THE PRESS...Heidi is now also an agent for ‘VIE at home’

Health & Beauty

Latest celeb to join the trend is SATC’s Samantha – look out for her gorgeous gold lightening fingers in the latest movie. Minx eliminates the multiple steps involved in a manicure or pedicure. A shiny vinyl covering is gently heated and simply moulded to the nail.

Application takes approx 30/40 minutes - removal merely minutes. Minx lasts from a few days to 2 weeks on fingernails and up to 6 weeks on toes and, because it’s a dry coating, won’t smudge, smear or chip. The result – perfect nails without the multiple steps of a base coat, two colour coats and a final topcoat - in any colour or design you choose.

At the beginning of every new season of the year, we at SOS Médicos 24 HS like to send out some helpful advice and also a few words of caution, to help you to enjoy a healthy and pleasurable time. But be careful with the JELLYFISH and the SEA URCHIN that at a simple contact with the skin release powerful and irritating toxins that produce unbearable pain and a burning sensation, or will embed painful thorns in our feet! Another danger from the sea is accidents through immersion and in extreme cases, its maximum tragedy – suffocation through immersion, or drowning! We especially have to look after the kids, so they don´t go too far from the coast and that they are always protected by life jackets. The Sun is so beneficial and essential for life and can provoke severe burning that can ruin our holidays. For this reason we must always be protected with a high factor of sun lotion. And remember, SOS Médicos 24HS are here to protect you all year round, because we care about you and your family! For more information please call during office hours at +34 951 27 72 70 to visit our office in Manilva, or have a look at www.medicos24hs.com.

Nowadays there’s little meaning For a person to be gleaning When a man attaches "Doctor" to his name He may be a chiropractor Or a painless tooth extractor He’s entitled to the title just the same. Or perhaps he is a preacher Or a lecturer or teacher, Or an expert who cures chickens of the pip; He may keep a home for rummies, Or massage fat people’s tummies, Or specialize in ailments of the hip. Everybody is a "doctor," From the backwoods herb concocter To the man who takes bunions from your toes; From the frowning dietitian To the snappy electrician Who shocks you loose from all the body’s woes. So there’s very little meaning For a sufferer to be gleaning When a man attaches "Doctor" to his name. He may pound you, he may starve you, He may cut your hair or carve you, You have got to call him Doctor all the same!

Steps to take to achieve that perfect instant tan... While tanning in the sun is not a healthy option, it doesn't mean you can't be pleasantly bronzed via other means, with so many fake tans now available. The Works Hair and Beauty have come up with a few top-tips to help you before you go for your spray tan: •Exfoliate - The day before getting a spray tan, exfoliate your body with a loofah or scrub and moisturize well

•Loose or Dark Clothing - Many spray tanners also include a bronzer to help you (or the tanning technician) see any missed spots. While the tanner itself will not stain clothing, the bronzer will. Wear loose or dark clothing to the salon and avoid white clothing or bedding until you have showered

The Works has a complete list of hair and beauty treatments from cutting and colouring, through to beauty treatments like facials, waxing, eyes and nails to name but a few. They also have a dedicated masseuse to attend to those tired muscles leaving you feeling both relaxed and refreshed.

The Works, Centro Commercial Contur Elviria, Marbella Tel: 952 836 899 www.theworksmarbella.com

Shortly after a British Airways flight had reached its cruising altitude, the captain announced:

•Avoid Makeup, Deodorant, and Perfume - Some of these products may prevent the tanning solution from reacting with skin properly and others can even cause skin to turn green. Play safe and make sure there are no other cosmetics on your body before getting a spray tan.

'Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain. Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to Toronto . The weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth uneventful flight. So sit back, relax and ... OH, MY GOD !'

For more information on fake tanning, or to book yourself a bronzing appointment, call the professionals at

Some moments later the captain came back on the intercom.

•Waxing/Shaving - If you plan to shave or get a wax, do so before your spray treatment. Both of these hair removal options will also remove dead skin cells, which will make your fake tan fade more quickly

Healthy and tasty summer eating Summer means more outdoor exercise, but also beach, pool, and garden parties with (let’s face it) lots of drinking. Plus, it’s hot, and (if you’re where we are) way too humid. We all love a good summer afternoon picnic or barbecue, but heat waves and multiple mojitos can leave us feeling exhausted and sluggish. . With all that time in the sun there are a few important tips you should remember for peak health for the coming months…

Health & Beauty

Heat slows the body’s metabolism so you need fewer calories in summer than you do in winter because your body doesn’t have to create as much heat on its own. To avoid gaining weight during the summer follow these four tips;• Eat low calorie, nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. They supply a great source of water and potassium, which are lost in sweat. • Try to get protein mainly from vegetarian sources like soy and lentils, as well as limited amounts from fish. • Limit your intake of foods that are nutrient-poor. These include anything found in a package, rich in fats and carbohydrates, and lacking in essential nutrients. •Much of how we feel during the summer has to do with our hydration status. Both sweating and alcohol can dehydrate us, so pump up your water drinking with 2-4 glasses more than your norm (10 glasses a day for most people). Picnic the Healthy Way Eating outside under the sun, with the crash of waves on the beach or the wind through the trees as your musical accompaniment, makes any meal taste better. Here are some ways to ensure that dining al fresco doesn't translate to dining al fatso. 16 First, a healthy salad is a great choice.

The more multicoloured it is, the better it is for you. Choose from green, red and yellow peppers, tomato, cucumber, grated carrot, sliced beetroot, avocado, lettuce and other salad leaves. Dress the salad with a squeeze of lemon juice and some extra virgin olive oil (this has 'good' fat content) and fresh herbs such as parsley or mint, or use balsamic vinegar. Picnics are an easy way to get some of your five a day (the five portions of fruit and vegetables a day that we all need). Eating a variety of fruit and veg ensures that you're getting lots of vitamins and minerals, and they're low in fat but high in fibre. Include raw vegetables in your hamper. Peppers are a good source of vitamin C, and celery helps to reduce high blood pressure. Cherry tomatoes, sweet corn cobs and raw carrots all make simple, healthy finger food. They can be dipped in salsa or hummus, which is a source of fibre, vitamin B and vegetable proteins. (Don't have too much hummus, though, as it can be high in fat.) Filling up You’ll need some carbohydrates to provide you with some slow-burn energy for all the games you’ll be playing after lunch. Wholegrain bread, rolls, pitta and tortilla wraps are high in vitamins and releases energy slowly. Add low-fat margarine spread (if you need it). You’ll need some protein. Pack some freshly sliced cold meats into your cool bag and use them as sandwich fillers. You could try turkey, ham, chicken or beef slices. Buy it freshly sliced from a deli counter as the pre-packed varieties may contain additives. Sausages are another source of protein. Use ones with a high meat, low-fat content. Grill them instead of frying them, so that the fat drips away. Pasta or potato salads are good for picnics (but don’t use mayonnaise). Don't use salt to add flavour: instead, try spring onions, garlic, black pepper or other spices, or herbs.

If it’s a sunny day you’ll all want some cool drinks. Include lots of fluids in the picnic bag so no one gets dehydrated. Fresh fruit juice and water is refreshing. Or, if people fancy a fizzy drink, add sparkling water to the juice. It’s healthier than canned fizzy drinks, which are high in sugar.

Let the games begin. As well as the food, games are a fun part of a picnic.

A sweet treat You might feel like indulging in some sweet treats too, which is OK in moderation. Dip chunks and slices of fresh fruit in a sealable bowl of melted dark chocolate. Leave it in the fridge to set and keep it in your cool bag once you're out to avoid it turning into a sticky mess. Dark chocolate is better than milk chocolate as it contains disease-fighting antioxidants. And because it’s richer, you need less of it to satisfy your chocolate craving. Try strawberries, raspberries, bananas, orange or mandarin segments,

grapes or pineapple chunks. There are plenty of options. If you don’t fancy chocolate, pack portions of fruit, apples, bananas and oranges are tasty desserts. Or try low-fat yoghurts, fruit salad, or muesli with greek yoghurt. These are all light and refreshing, and will fill you up and provide you with natural sugars for energy. And there's no need to feel guilty as you enjoy them.

Costa Advice Bureau are expanding .. . If you are not already a member, then ask yourself why! Myra Azzopardi, the founder of CAB, answers some of our questions .... ED: What is CAB? Myra: CAB is the abbreviated form of Costa Advice Bureau.

ED: What is the Costa Advice Bureau and what services do they offer?

20 14 4

Myra: CAB is an independent, non Government funded company that can help to resolve your legal and any other problems that you may be experiencing whilst living, working, or holidaying on the coast. We provide impartial independent and confidential advice. Costs for our services are minimal for members of Costa Advice Bureau. (see a list of some of the many services we offer on the opposite page).. ED: How did CAB evolve? Myra: In the year 1995 I made my way to the head quarters of what to be an up and coming political part solely with the intention of finding solutions to the routine problems that were almost impossible to solve and affected both myself and many property owners. Each year that followed the purchase of a property in 1970 was problem filled. What were supposed to be my relaxed, annual family holiday breaks on the Costa would turn into a bureaucratic nightmare. I asked the new party for assistance to these problems and

without being given a solution I was somehow roped in to assist with these exact issues. I was asked to make a list of the many problems that faced the non Spanish community who came to live or purchase a holiday home on the Costa del Sol. We discussed the need for an office to deal with these matters. I became more involved out of the need to see change for both the Spanish and non Spanish to overcome an ancient and non functioning system. Out of this was born the first foreigners department in Estepona which opened its doors in 1997. In 1998 I was called upon by the same party and asked if I would become a coordinator for the foreign community in the municipality of San Roque . The following elections would be the first in Spain where the European community would have a vote and a voice in the running of their community. I started discovering the immense problems that this community faced on a daily basis. Besides designing the European community’s right to vote campaign for this group of people I became what could only be described as a glorified troubleshooter. I now had to find my way around this antiquated governmental system and find solutions for problems too numerous to mention. After the elections and the realization that the foreigners offices which had started to pop up in various communities were not independent and were obviously not in the position able to take on every aspect of the communities many problems or to act as their lawyer, accountant or even ethically suggest any reliable service provider. With this in mind and the continual requests for assistance I conceived the idea of setting up an independent and impartial office to assist and advise. This office could not and would not be government funded as in Spain there is no such body as a citizen’s advice bureau. This does allow CAB to remain neutral.

The first CAB office was opened in Estepona in 2007. This was to be trial and error as to how this could be kept open financially. As the numbers of people grew so did the problems that were being presented to us. So from basically starting with issues like negotiating with town halls including the planning department, tax returns, the utilities and more complicated legal issues CAB added more services to the list of our activities. The need for such a service in many other areas in Spain became apparent and for this reason CAB will be opening its new office in Mijas in September of this year.

Myra: No, as I said earlier, this is not a Government funded service. This is the only way we can stay independent and offer unbiased and impartial advice to our memebers. If, like other foreigners departments, we were funded by the Government (in power at the present time!) then our advice would be free but not impartial ... we would be representing our local party’s views. We would not be putting our clients priorities first. We ask only a minimal fee of €95 plus IVA for an annual family membership. This membership entintles you to a list of free advice services and 20% discount on our general fees. ED: Thanks for your time Myra, and The Sentinella, Costa West would like to congratulate you on your work and contribution to the expat community here on the Costa Del Sol and we look forward to seeing many more CAB offices in the future. At the time of writing this, the party is still in full swing … the passion is alive, Spain is living a dream … as very well deserved winners of the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Sports & Activities

I intentionally didn’t feature the event in the last issue as I was certain every other publication would do so. However, having followed the Spanish team every step of the way I felt they at least deserved a mention in our little mag. I do not claim to be an expert of the game, merely an observer passing comment on what was a spectacular event.

22

So, apologies to all you non football lovers, here are some interesting bits and bobs about footie and in particular, why Spain so deserved to win … maybe England could learn a lesson or two from them!

ranking without previously having won the World Cup. Between November 2006 and June 2009 Spain went undefeated for a record tying 35 consecutive matches before their loss to the United States, a record shared with Brazil, including a record 15-game winning streak and thus earning third place in the FIFA Confederations Cup. The odds of Spain winning the 2010 World Cup were 4 to 1. They were joint favorites, with Brazil, and were backed by the world’s greatest ever player, Pele, to claim their first championship. Following a flawless qualifying campaign, winning ten out of ten, Spain were the number one team in the FIFA rankings.

Some General facts: The Spanish side is often referred to as La Furia Roja (The Red Fury) or La Roja (The Red). In July 2008 Spain rose to the top of the FIFA World Rankings for the first time in its history, becoming the sixth nation to top this ranking, and the first nation to top the

This World Cup was a Celebration of Firsts: South Africa were the first African hosts (and what a fabulous job they did too!) The United States won its group for the first time since 1930. Spain are the first European country to win the title when the event was held off-continent. Spain are the first to win after losing their opening game. Spain are the first European champion to win since West Germany in 1974.

Spain are the first to win after having been humiliated by the Americans a year earlier. All of Europe’s five FIFA World Cup winners have lifted the Trophy at the end of their first Final, after Spain emulated Italy, Germany, England and France. 32 years after Argentina’s Daniel Bertoni scored the last extra-time goal in a FIFA World Cup Final, Spain’s Andres Iniesta repeated the feat.

Its ledger since 2006 is quite astounding: 50 victories, 2 losses, 2 draws. The losses came to the US, by a 2-0 count in last year’s Confederations Cup in South Africa, and to Switzerland in its Cup group opening game. Since that match Spain allowed only one goal (to Chile) and ended the tournament with a streak of 433 scoreless minutes. What’s an intriguing Spanish tale, of course, is that a man from Madrid (Casillas) saved the match and a man from Barcelona (Iniesta) won it. Proving that despite strong club rivalries, the country comes first! The victory sees Spain become only the third nation to hold the European and world football crowns at the same time, two years on from their European Champi-

Spain has not always shown such support for their national team. As recently as five years ago the country mocked the national team. Only when Spain began to do well at the European Championships in 2008 did the country show any interest in the national side. Even then it was only come the semi final that the country got excited about their national team. Having been a Liverpool fan since an earlier age I was disappointed by the performance of Fernando Torres (El Niño). I have since learnt that the way the Spanish national team play does not suit El Niño. His continuing frustration comes from the fact that the neat passing game Spain play often leaves him as a spectator. He is much better running on to a distant pass. He is very dangerous picking up a long ball. He has done that for Liverpool so often and so well. But Spain do not play that way. Unfortunately for Torres, he typifies England team players rather than his national side. So what are the glaring differences between the English & Spanish teams? I’m sure some of you will dislike me for saying this but England are light years away from being as good a team as Spain A lot of the demise of the quality and attitude of England players may well be blamed on television. The moment the footballing authorities took the Sky money, the domestic game was always going to rule supreme. Rather than developping home grown youth talent, clubs spent fortunes on buying foreign footballers. That was a big mistake the true cost of which we are only witnessing now.

Sports & Activities

The Spanish Success Story:

onships success in Vienna.

Sports & Activities

The obsession with the Premiership and the dominance of the domestic game has been so detrimental to the national team. Playing for your country now means little to most of the millionaire footballers who are chosen to wear the three lions shirt. Sure, the likes of Villa, Iniesta and Xavi are paid well in Spain. The difference is that they have pride. They actually want to play for their national team and they want to play well. The relationship of the two teams with the press and media is a glaring difference. Spanish football reporters, from newspapers, TV and Radio were allowed into team dressing rooms to interview players after a game. The press were on the plane bringing the victorious team back to Madrid. The main football TV presenters were on the plane celebrating with the players. There is a mutual trust between the players and the press. You only have to look at the videos posted on youtube if you missed them on national television. In Spain, many players are friends with those who write or broadcast about them. The Spanish Capitain is maybe a wee bit friendlier than others …

Even the Spanish royal family were televised expressing their elation and frustrations during the final matches. Reina Sofia even visited the team’s

24

dressing room (with Pujol still dressed only in his towel may we add!) So that’s my rant over. Be I right or be I wrong .. let us just celebrate the fact that a team that believes in playing football the right way are Champions of both Europe and the World.

The entertainment factor was superb. South Africa did us proud with their ceremonies and organisation of the whole event and the music of Shakira (Waka Waka), K’naan & Bisbal (Waving Flag ) will be with us forever . .. The Spanish flags will no doubt continue to wave for a very long time from now and why shouldn’t they. Here’s to the Spanish passion ... for the wonderful game of football and for life in general. This has been one hell of a party ... ¡ Vive España! ¡ Vive la Roja ! Feel free to send your comments to: costawest@thesentinella.com

August is a quiet month in Ronda, most Ronde単os prefer to stay indoors away from the heat, or take their families to the beach before the next school year begins. For visitors to the city this means peace and quiet, albeit with a lot of heat.

Taking inspiration from Goya's paintings of magnificent bullfighters resplendent in costume, and the ladies who accompanied them, the bullfighters arrive in period dress, whilst the Goyesca dames are feted around the city as befitting princesses.

In September Ronda will come alive with the Pedro Romero Feria, and the sister fiesta, the Corrida Goyesca, both of which are internationally known and bring to our little mountain city some of the biggest celebrities and royalty.

Despite the high summer temperatures, Ronda is generally much cooler than other inland cities such as Sevilla, in fact the average August day hovers around the low 30s, compared with low 40s in other cities, so a day out in Ronda could be just what you need to recharge your batteries. For keen walkers this is a time of year when many of the public walks are closed to avoid the potential of fire, however low lying river valleys such as the Genal from Igualeja to Cartajima can be very pleasant, and are a nature lovers dream. Remember to checkout my website for upto date news about Ronda and the surrounding areas:

Historical & Botanical Gardens... It is rare these days to find a hidden gem, we have however found one in these fantastic gardens. Expecting Palm trees and Olive bushes, what we found transported us to places all over the world. In the cool shades of such a fantastic variation of trees & shrubs interspersed with water falls and ponds you can lose yourself for hours walking along the well kept footpaths. To cater for all they have various routes for those who want a quick trip, even suitable for wheelchairs up to to the long haul with almost a mile of trail.

Out & About

1855-1990:The origins of La Concepción can be traced back to the merging of several estates located to the north of the city of Malaga. These were home to olive and almond trees and vines, though the citrus trees were the most numerous. The gardens’ creators were Jorge Loring Oyarzabal and Amalia Heredia Livermore, who purchased the land on which they stand around 1855. According to written records of the time, they had originally come up with the idea of a garden seven years earlier while on their honeymoon, which saw them embark upon on a tour of Europe. The Marquis and Marchioness’ comfortable economic situation coupled with their firsthand experience of some of Europe’s finest gardens and their commercial dealings abroad enabled them to cultivate the most exotic of plant species from around the world. To ensure their dream came to fruition, they enlisted the services of a French gardener, Chamousst, who selected and planted the gardens’ flora, an endeavour for which he was awarded a number of prizes, as witnessed by newspaper reports of the late XIX century. La Concepción quickly earned itself a fine reputation throughout Europe, though not for its exuberantly beautiful gardens; the source of this renown was in fact the magnificent collection of archaeological remains on display in the Loring Museum, a small, Doric-style building erected on the site of a Roman mosaic discovered in Cartama depicting the feats of Hercules For many years, the Lorings strove to restore all of the archaeological remains that they en2 46 countered. Without doubt, the most significant of these was the Lex Flavia Malacitana,

a bronze piece bearing the Roman laws that governed Malaga in the year 80 AD which now resides in the National Archaeology Museum. Following the death of its owners and the family’s economic decline, La Concepción was bought in 1911 by a married couple from Bilbao, the Echevarria-Echevarrietas, who extended the gardens by creating a number of new areas. 1990-2006: In 1990, the entire estate (a total of 49 hectares, taking into account the historical garden plus the surrounding agricultural and forest land) was purchased by Malaga City Council for 600 million pesetas (€3,606,073). In 1991, the “City of Malaga” Municipal Botanical Trust was founded to run and administer the estate. The construction of El Limonero reservoir saw these 49 hectares of land divided into two sections by a road: 26 of these were declared green belt, with the remaining 23 enclosed hectares making up La Concepción Historical-Botanical Gardens. Once the necessary infrastructure and upgrading work had been carried out, it was opened to the public in 1994 with two main aims: the conservation and improvement of the historical garden and the creation on the estate of a botanical garden (a cultural, educational and scientific centre connected with the world of plants with the majority of its species on display in living collections). Historical heritage:La Concepción boasts an equally significant historical heritage. In the XIX century, La Concepción served as a meeting point for a whole host of illustrious figures of the time. Politicians, artists, aristocrats and the noble Malaga bourgeoisie all frequented its gardens. As a result, a number of distinguished buildings were erected here: the magnificent Stately Home, the cypress house, the administrator’s house, the gardener’s hut and the schoolhouse; two iron greenhouses; a large arbour; fountains, footbridges, flights of steps, a delightful viewpoint, and, most impressive of all, the Loring Museum, a small, Doric-style building which housed the archaeological discoveries unearthed in the excavations financed by the estate’s first owners. Some of these archaeological pieces are on display around the museum, having recently been relocated as part of a project by the architect Jose Fernandez Oyarzabal. Send in your photos of your visit.

“¡Quien no ha visto Sevilla – no ha visto Maravilla!” (“he who has not seen Sevilla - has not seen a miracle”) is the famous Spanish saying about the capital city of Andalucia.

Out & About

To me it’s a miracle that so many people living on the Costa del Sol have NOT been to Sevilla. To me it’s a Spanish city to rival Barcelona in terms of wonderful things to see and do and it’s definitely one of my favourite cities in the world. When many people think of Sevilla (or Seville, as the English like to call it don’t ask me why!) they think of the clichés. It’s the city of orange trees (true, but visit at the beginning of May when it’s the city of orange blossom), of Flamenco (true too, and most of Spain’s best artistes come from here) and of Carmen. Poor Carmen was a figment of French author Prosper Merimee’s imagination, but the tobacco factory is still there and the people of Sevilla have so taken Carmen’s story to heart that they’ve placed a statue of her outside the famous Maestranza bullring, where she supposedly met her end at the hands of her lover.

If you only come to Sevilla to visit the to u r i s t parts you won’t be disappointed. The cathedral is the largest in Europe (and wonderfully cool on a hot day), the Real Alcázar is like a smaller version of the Alhambra and has lovely gardens and of course the maze-like streets of the Barrio Santa Cruz are as unique and charming as ever. You can happily take the tourist bus around the city or a boat cruise on the 28 Rio Guadalquivir along with the millions

of other tourists who flock here every year, but Sevilla has so much more to offer its visitors. If you know where to look (or book with Camino Holidays!) you can find more interesting, beautiful and unique parts of Sevilla. From the smaller palaces open to visitors to Sevilla’s Las Bellas Artes, (one of the 15 galleries based in this city) Spain’s most prestigious gallery after the Guggenheim and the Prado, you have many wonderful museums to choose from. My favourite is the Flamenco Museum in the heart of Santa Cruz, where not only can you enjoy the interactive exhibits, but you can catch one of the best Flamenco shows in town. Sevilla is known as the city of a thousand shoe shops and the shopping is excellent here, from large branches of Spanish favourites El Corte Ingles, Zara and Mango to a wealth of small independent shops. If you like Spanish ceramics then the very best place to buy them in the world is their cultural heart – the barrio of Triana. Here generations of artisan families have made them in the back, and sold them in the front! What else – well, you should visit the trendy Alameda area, filled with great little bars and restaurants, the Aire de Sevilla in the restored Arabic baths and now one of the most wonderful and unique day spas in Europe and the Flamenco bars of Calle Betis at night. Really this only scratches the surface of all there is to do in this legendary city. So many places fail to live up to their reputation: Sevilla is one Spanish destination which surpasses it in every way! We specialise in holidays in South West Andalucia. If you have any questions on this area we'd be happy to help and advise...

20th ADANA Dog Show ... Only two years after the foundation of ADANA, the animal rescue charity, the first dog show for mixed breeds and other dogs was staged in Estepona. This year the show reaches 20 and plans a very special event.

Pets & Animals

On Sunday 19 September the 20th show will be staged in the Palacio de Congresos in Estepona for the first time. There will be 5 obedience classes, 5 agility classes and 10 variety and novelty classes. A wide selection of commercial stalls will offer all sorts of pet related and other goodies. There will also be a cafe and a bar. "It is wonderful not to have to worry about the weather or forest fires this year", said David McNally, the show organiser. "Over the years we have had to deal with biblical rains which washed away the access roads, torrid heat which was too much for the dogs and last year we had the forest fire on the site just a few days before the show."

The main focus for this year is children and their dogs. So there are several opportunities for junior handlers to show off their skills. We hope to have a demonstration of mainly ex ADANA dogs who now work for the police and armed services. The doors open at 10am for registration and judging starts at 11.00 on the dot. Admission is 5 â‚Ź for adults but accompanied children get in free. Entry to classes is 4â‚Ź. Entry forms are available from vets and on the web site : 32

A Question of Personality… Some dogs are so laid-back, they can only be described as couch potatoes; some are hyperactive; some are Don Quixote types, permanently and vigorously defending themselves and their loved ones from imaginary enemies, in the form of any moving object that happens to cross their path of vision. Then you have the quality control freaks, those who are hell-bent on ascertaining that each and every object is exactly what it says on the tin…

However, very few dog-owners who have had the misfortune of being confronted by the resulting scenario would describe their initial emotions as ‘pure bliss’… Prevention is better than cure (and in these cases, it is also cheaper). For everybody’s sake, if you bring a new dog into your home – regardless of age or type – confine it to a space where it can do no harm to itself or your belongings

These types will chew table-legs to the core, to ensure they are made of real wood; they will chew your new designer shoes to bits, just to make sure you haven’t wasted your money by buying a fake pair; they will chew vital documents, your underwear, live wires – the list goes on and on… They are especially interested in the quality of sofas; they will scratch (and scratch and scratch) at the surface fabric until a tiny hole appears (this is the point at which - assuming you were present, which of course, you are not – you could say “adios” forever to your precious sofa) and they discover… KAPOK, GLORIOUS KAPOK!! Pulling it out through that little hole for hours and hours, there’s no end to it – this is quality stuff indeed! Pure bliss!!

Love cooking and delight in modern Mediterranean cuisine?

Some people are just so passionate about what they do, the way they speak about a particular subject, the way they just exude emotion and positivity … many times without realising that they are doing it. Even though she had just finished a grueling week catering for a group of 30 people in Robert Kilroy-Silk’s private villa in Casares, this is the impression I derived from my first meeting with Anne Manson, of Annie B’s Kitchen (Sorry but I don’t think the foot massage can take all the credit Anne!). Passionate about food, Annie ran her own successful corporate hospitality company in London for 15 years before her love of Spanish food, wine, music and culture led her to Andalucia. It´s roots come from Andalucían peasant farmers who had easy access to the ingredients. It made a refreshing and sustaining lunch, blended by brute force using a mortar and pestle and thinned using cool well water. It´s a great vehicle to demonstrate how Sherry Vinegar can enhance the flavor of a dish. In class I always add it bit by bit, letting guests taste the difference each additional teaspoon makes.

AJO BLANCO 2 small slices day old bread with crusts removed A little milk or water 1 large crispy apple peeled, quartered and cored 200g blanched almonds 3-4 peeled garlic cloves 600ml water 150ml olive oil 4 tsp sherry vinegar

S and P Grapes, preferably Moscatel Begin with washing and cutting in half or quarter the grapes. Remove seeds and then freeze in a single layer. Soak bread for 10 mins and then squeeze out excess milk/water. Put almonds, garlic, bread and water in a blender and whizz until smooth. With motor running slowly, add OO and vinegar. Add more water to reach desired consistency - it should be the consistency of single cream

Some Facts or Fiction about the 1500’s...

Entertainment

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to smell . .. . brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

36

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water!" Houses had thatched roofs-thick strawpiled high, with no wood underneath... It was the only place for animals to get

warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs." There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire.. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence

the rhyme: Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Entertainment

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky... The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

But if this protector doesn't work properly, the processor just burns out, and this is the worst thing that can happened with your laptop, because to repair it can cost a lot of money. Even when your laptop is switched off, heat can cause damage for the internal components. It's really difficult to diagnose what exactly and where exactly the damage has been done, so it's expensive to repair too. Here are few tips to avoid this happening: 1. Never leave your laptop where it is exposed to direct sunlight, whether it is in use or shut down. Leaving a laptop in direct sunlight can cause damage not only for the internal components, but even for a laptop's body. 2. Do not leave your laptop and other mobile gear in a car. Leaving your laptop closed in a vehicle in hot temperatures will also cause damage to your laptop. 3. If you think that your laptop feels really hot, wait until it cools down to the interior temperature before you use it.
