1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

Hard work leads to success, and I want to be successful.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I am going to miss the fact that it is free education.

3.What did you like least about high school?

I didn’t like the meaningless busywork.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

My dad has influenced me the most because he has all the characteristics needed to be successful, and he has taught me to work hard towards my goals and take pride in my accomplishments.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself flying planes in the air force.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would recommend that the school add a life lessons class.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of high school?

My drive to work hard in and out of school has been my goal to succeed in life, to have a good paying job, and live the American dream.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I am going to miss my friends the most from high school, and the memories that were made during high school.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The think I liked the least about high school was the people’s inability to park 4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

My parents have influences me the most.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years I see myself working hard for a large company with a wife and kids at home that I love dearly. I hope to be doing something I love and living the dream.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

If I could change one thing about high school it would be the hours of school and the amount of homework.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

I have always pushed myself to be the best I can be. I strongly believe that if you work hard you will achieve more and the results will come.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I am going to miss the people I go to know that I spent four years with and some 12 years since kindergarten. Also, relationships I made with teachers. They aren’t only great teachers but understanding friends.

3.What did you like least about high school?

I did not like never having snow days! I know the teachers wanted them too, sometimes the MCPS Administration needs to let loose and have a little fun.

4.Who has influenced you the most and why?

My parents have influenced me the most.

They taught me that good things come to people who work hard for it.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself as a nurse somewhere in the US. I hope to be married, or at least engaged. Thinking about going back to school to get my masters or doctorate.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

The aspiration to become someone who can make a difference.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I’m going to miss a lot of the friends I made and the teachers I was inspired by.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The lack of respect among students.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

My parents have sacrificed so much for me and they have always been there for me.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully I will be fully financially independent and happy.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would enjoy it more.

7.What advice do you have for incoming freshman?

I would tell them to enjoy the opportunities that they have in high school.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

My drive to work hard has been my understanding of the importance of education instilled early on my parents. I set a goal to maintain a 4.0 GPA before I started high school and I stick to the plan.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

The thing I will remember most about high school is the times spent with friends.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The thing I like least about high school was of course all the homework.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

My parents have had the most influence on me because they taught me not only the importance of education, but even more important, how profound and necessary it is to love and serve God. My relationship with Jesus has had an enormous impact on my life. Who knows if that would exist were it not for my parents.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of high school?

I made a personal goal for myself to get all A’s in high school and that really motivated me to work hard.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

My teachers and friends.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The drama and constant need of attention.

A lot of people put too much importance on popularity when high school is just about learning.

4.What has influenced you the most and why?

Mr. Hartman because through him and DECA, I learned my passion is business and that has opened so many doors for me.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself with a family in an urban area working for a major fashion company, hopefully in the marketing department.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would change he curriculum and add more skill based classes to help us learn how to live on our own and manage money.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

I rally enjoy learning and understanding rather than stressing over a good grade. The grades are just the icing on the cake.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

Honestly, I’m going to miss seeing all of my friends. All of the good times and the bad times I’ve shared with them have brought us unimaginably closer and I’ll miss the bonds we have made.

3.What did you like least about high school?

I wouldn’t say bullying was a huge problem but some of the divisions of social groups and treatment of others was extremely childish.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

My brother has influenced me the most. He is very smart, tough and above all caring. Though he is younger, I strive every day to be a positive role model for him and I strive to see life way he does!

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Whether in a hospital or a classroom, I see a happy guy helping others and leaving every second of it.

To get good grades and be consistent.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I am going to miss my friends.

3.What did you like least about high school?

Some or most of the classes being inadequate.

No one, I did the work.

Out of college most likely at a job just to get by.

More variety of classes.

Just do the work, and pay attention.

Not enough, might need more things that are needed in reality.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

I hate losing more then I want to win. This has forced me to put myself in the best position to succeeded.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I’m going to miss my teachers the most. They have helped me so much in shaping my future.

3.What did you like least about high school?

People who walked slow in the halls.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

My dad. No matter the situation he’s there with help and advice for me.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully paying off my med school bills.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

Stop grouping kids by age. No other part of our society does this and its officially slows down the best and the brightest and doesn’t allow those who need more time to learn at their own pace.

7.What advice do you have for incoming freshman?

Plan out your classes for all of high school now. Having a sketch really helps you take all the classes you want.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of high school?

I made sure to work hard in school so I could pay for college with few loans and also to best prepare myself for what college and life will bring my way.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I’ll really miss being part of a high school team, especially after winning state and being in a close community where all the students know each other and teachers are eager to help their students.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The unnecessary drama 4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

My mom has been my biggest influence.

She’s the strongest person I know and has overcome many challenges which motivates me to be better.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years I hope to be working in the marketing department of a professional athletic team, like the Seahawks, and be in the process of working my way up to marketing manager.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

Changing “early outs” to “late ins”

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

Being lazy was never really an option growing up. I was taught to work hard and try my hardest.

I’ve always had a little bit of a “type A” personality and staying busy and organized is how I deal with everything.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

Probably just the memories that care with spending countless hours with the same class in the same building for 4 years.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The amount of stress that came with each class.

4.Who has influenced you the most and why?

My brother, he was a good student and excelled in a lot of classes.

I just wanted to live up to the expectation he set.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully financially stable and happy pursuing a nursing career with a family of my own.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

Better college prep.

7.What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?

Take all your classes seriously, they are stuck on your transcript and effect your GPA until you graduate. Have fun and try new things.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

Setting goals for myself and the culture/ expectation of hard work from my family.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I am going to miss playing soccer with all my teammates that I have played with since elementary school 3.What did you like least about high school?

Parents and coaches.

My parents and coaches have always been good examples of people who work hard and always encourage me to do well and accomplish my goals.

I would make homeroom shorter.

7.What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?

Set goals for yourself. Write them down and hang it up in your room. It will motivate you and help you work toward it.

To set myself apart for a good future, and make my family proud.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I’m going to miss my parents paying the bills and all the good teachers and friends.

3.What did you like least about high school?

Reading so much Shakespeare.

My grandfather because he is a good man.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

United Air Force pilot.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I wouldn’t change anything.

7.What advice do you have for incoming freshman?

Have fun and be yourself. Don’t care what other people think about you and be kind.

This way, you can make friends that will last a lifetime.

8.How well do you think Sentinel has prepared you for life after high school?

Extremely well. Well, if life has lots of homework, then yes, well.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

My drive to work hard came from wanting to get scholarships for college and gain as much knowledge that I could that would prepare me for my career.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I am going to miss seeing everyone I have grown up with every day the most.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The lack of trust between upper level administrators and students.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

Faculty:Mrs. Schneider because she kicks ass and gives me the best life advice. Non-faculty: my dad because he inspires me to be strong-willed, kind, funny, and knowledgeable every day.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself working as a mechanical engineer for an American car company, preferably Chrysler.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would make it require to take welding, woods, or small engines to graduate because I learned the most about real people in my welding class sophomore year.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

I always want to be my best self. If I set the habit of working hard now it would be easier to work hard in the future.

Plus I wanted to make sure I could get into the colleges I wanted to with scholarship money.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

All the people I’ve made connections with and the Spartan community in general.

3.What did you like least about high school?

Homework, tests, long hours.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

Past upperclassmen because they have shown me what hard work can do for your future.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Happy and financially stable.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would have more life prep classes for seniors that teach you how to do finances, taxes, etc.

What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?

Just do your homework. It’s not that hard and you’ll be able to get decent grades. Get involved in activities and don’t conjugate in the middle of the hallways.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

Working hard has always seemed like the best way to live because you gain many opportunities and create good relationships. Also, I knew working hard in high school would make life easier later.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I’m going to miss all of my friends and the amazing teachers that I have had through the years.

3.What did you like least about high school?

There is nothing that I really disliked about high school 4.Who has influenced you the most?

Mr. Taylor has influenced me the most because he has many stories to tell and is good at his job.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years, I would like to live some place on the East coast as a forensic accountant.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would get more involved earlier than I did in order to meet more people and gain more experience.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

I find it satisfying to do well and I enjoy learning about being organized. I like to make goals and achieve them as well.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I will miss my wonderful teachers and mentors who have encouraged and inspired me.

3.What did you like least about high school?

Getting up early in order to practice violin before school has been difficult.

4.Who has influenced you the most and why?

My parents have influenced me the most because they have supported and encouraged me to succeed in everything I do, they have helped me organize and be prepared.

They have loved me and cared for me in order to make me the best I can be.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I will have graduated from college and completed graduate school.

I’m making up my story as I go along.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would want more access to online courses for required classes.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

I’ve always loved learning about new and interesting things, and that curiosity has inspired me to explore new ideas and work hard at understanding the subjects I study.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

The excellent teachers and mentors I’ve found over the past four years. Their advice and experience have been moveable throughout my high school career.

3.What did you like least about high school?

Waking up every Monday-Friday at 5:30AM and driving 2.5 miles to get to school every day.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

The teachers I’ve had over the past 18 years.

They’ve taught me the importance and dedication and the value of hard work. I’ll be forever indebted to them for all they’ve done for me and all my fellow students.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I’d love to be finishing a Ph.D. in physics.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

Start the day later, and make the passing periods longer.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

The biggest driver for me has been to not let people down. I know that school is easier for me than most, and I’d feel terrible to just waste that. I have drive to make something out of the talents I’ve been given.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

The parking lot.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The lack of student voice in decisions that really matter, namely: 1) school beginning time change 2) passing periods/scheduling 3) transparency in nearly everything 4) the addition of student of the month with parking 5) what really matters and makes Sentinel special.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

Brock Flynn, because I never truly understood a single thing about that glorious man.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Doing math, but at least getting paid for it.

6.What advice do you have for incoming freshman?

Do a little bit every day.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

I am both a perfectionist and aggressive with my day to day activities. Just going through the motions is not something that can settle in my mind, I have to go beyond the limit and drive myself to be the best I can be.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I am going to miss all the friends I have made here in Montana and have teachers that have put in all their effort to teach me to the best of their ability.

3.What did you like least about high school?

I sear, I will not miss the line out of the parking lot every day. I also wont miss the bathrooms in high school either.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

I think my grandpa Jack has influenced me the most when it comes to developing my character. From being classy and to not giving up on work, he has inspired me to be a gentleman and a bold person just like him.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I hope I am doing something that I can wake up every day and feel good about the impact I am making on my life and others. I don’t want to be dragging through my life, I hope I am embracing it.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

I want to be smart and go to college.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

Not having to do my own laundry.

3.What did you like least about high school?

All the excess supervision.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

Family because they are all supportive and successful.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Med school/ fellowship and residency.

6.If you could change one thing about high school what would it be?

I would make more practice classes required and fewer classes that are inapplicable in real life like all the pointless philosophy in English.

Classes like woods, metals, engines, and something that taught how to pay bills like personal finance should be required.

7.What advice do you have for incoming freshman?

Hang out with friends as much as possible. If you want to go to college, get good grades.

1.What has been your drive to work so hard in and out of school?

My parents are immigrants and have always instilled a sense of hard work in me. They taught me to never do the minimum required, and to always do the maximum you can. I don’t feel satisfied if I know I could have put more effort in, and I always strive to do the most I know I am capable of.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

I’m going to miss not having the responsibility to feed myself, and not worrying to much about paying for my living.

3.What did you like least about high school?

I liked least that programs that aren’t athletic, like arts or science do not get as much support, credit, or attention. I also disliked the short lunch and tardy rules.

4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself graduated from medical school and living in Switzerland, and eating good food.

5.What advice do you have for incoming freshman?

Figure out that their classes matter. You should enjoy yourself, but you shouldn’t put off work until junior year and regret it. Do the most YOU can do. If the best you can do isn’t an A, that is OKAY.

1.What has been your drive to work hard in and out of school?

My drive to work hard in and out of school comes from the feeling I get after doing something to the best of my ability and being recognized for that.

2.What are you going to miss most about high school?

The thing I am going to miss most about high school is the community aspect with sports, teacher, and classmates.

3.What did you like least about high school?

The thing I like least about high school was all the petty drama over things that won’t matter and nobody will remember in a week.

4.Who has influenced you the most, and why?

Outside of school my parents have influenced me the most by pushing me to my full potential but always accepting me for what I am. In school, Deb Thompson has influenced me the most by always being there for me and giving me real advice, and for being my second mom at school.

5.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself applying/attending University of Washington’s physicians assistant program, after that coming back to Missoula to work in general surgery, then specializing in concussions and the brain.

Brett Taylor: The man, the myth, the legend Where will he go now?

for the Sentinel Konah Some say the story of Brett Taylor becoming a teacher is a tall tale. Now with him retiring, Sentinel has some big shoes to fill.

Born in Sacramento, California and raised in Grass Valley, California, science teacher Brett Taylor has been teaching for 35 years.

Now in his final weeks, we wonder what really got him into teaching in the first place.

Growing up, Taylor was surrounded by

sports and outdoor activities. Hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, and playing sports seemed to fill his days. Experiencing all that he could, basketball seemed to be his cup of tea. Being six feet and nine inches, most people can see why.

After high school, Taylor continued to play basketball at UC Davis. He tells stories of long bus trips with the boys and grueling practices but still enjoying himself and not regretting a thing. While at UC Davis Taylor

wasn’t just playing basketball but also taking science classes when and where he could. In the midst of his college life he found an interest in wildlife biology.

“Being a teacher was last in my mind when thinking about possible occupations,” Taylor said. “While fully involved in science classes, the idea was to become a wildlife biologist.”

Taking jobs with the Forest Service and Fish Wildlife and Parks, Taylor moved to national parks and monuments in the backcountry of California, Nevada, and Utah to begin his work. This is also where Taylor met his wife of 36 years.

“My wife and I had two cars worth of stuff and we would haul it around to all the places we would go,” Taylor said.

In 1980, when not in the backcountry, Taylor went to Nevada Union, a local high school in northern California, and asked if he could help the basketball coach out with coaching.

The coach agreed.

Taylor enjoyed coaching and spending time with the kids. After awhile of being the

assistant coach, the head coach asked if Taylor would like to sub. Taylor jumped on the opportunity.

“I guess I was kinda nervous at first but it wasn’t that bad. I liked being with the students and for some reason teaching was just fun to me,” Taylor said.

The next year Taylor went back to UC Davis and got his teaching degree and wanted to start teaching right away. While waiting for his first teaching position, Taylor still enjoyed working in the wilderness.

In 1982, while deep in Utah’s Dinosaur National Monument, Taylor got a radio call from his boss telling him he needed to pack up and come to town. Taylor had gotten a job at the same high school he had subbed at, Nevada Union, as a science teacher. He also became the head coach of the basketball team.

Since then, Taylor has taught in four different schools, and the last two in Missoula County Public Schools. While teaching at Big Sky from 1900 to 2005, Taylor felt the need to

“I think in my career, I am most proud of the kids that came through that program. I helped them stay in school, helped them feel like they could be successful, and having so many of them come back and thank me has been so rewarding. It was very, very, rewarding work,” Reimers said.

For Reimers, creating bonds that last inside and outside of the classroom is what matters.

“I love to have kids come back to these classes and tell me how they are doing. You form a relationship,” Reimers said.

“I like to have kids that maybe aren’t real successful in a lot of other classes, because you can bring them here and they are success

of the Sentinel Konah Lois Reimers likes to embrace the chaos in her classroom. It’s become part of her life, and she loves every second of her crazy days in her classroom.

“A typical day in my classroom is chaotic,” Reimers said. “On cooking days, they have to hop. They know they have to get it done, which means it can get crazy.”

Cooking and teaching high school students to cook wasn’t always Reimers’ plan.

“I was going to be a veterinarian. I was the neighborhood vet, everybody brought hurt snakes and hurt anything else to me. My room looked like a menagerie,” she said with a grin.

“I took my first home economics class in high school and thought, ‘I really like this, this is fun,’ so I changed my plans,” Reimers said.

“I saw the teacher really enjoyed what she

did and I thought it would be nice to have a job that you just love,” Reimers said.

Reimers decided that teaching was the career for her, which wasn’t out of the ordinary for her family tree.

“I come from a long line of teachers. My mother is a teacher, my grandmother on my dad’s side and a couple of the aunt’s were teachers, and my older sister is a teacher,” Reimers said.

For Reimers, having an older sister who taught was incredibly important to her life.

“My greatest influence is my older sister, who basically raised me. She is 15 years older than I am, so I was always her special kid.

She really helped shape me into who I am today,” Reimers said.

Her sister is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the story of Reimers’ teaching career-- she started because of the influence of people she loved, and she continued because she fell in love with the career and helping her students.

After four years of an overall lack of sleep and a whole lot of stress, I have survived high school. It’s not that it was hard or really that terrible, it’s just that it has all become so normal and so routine. Freshman year is new and exciting but that all fades away quicker than one might think. Once you get past all of the drama and stereotypical aspects of high school, it’s kind of just all about what you make of it.

It’s really easy to focus on what other people think of you, and even easier to allow that to affect how you perceive yourself. If I have learned anything in high school it’s that letting go of what other people might think of you is the best way to let yourself grow up. We’ve all felt alone, we’ve all wished for more, we’ve all disliked various aspects of ourselves, and we’ve all compared ourselves to probably most everyone around us. I’ve had to remind myself countless times that I am not the only one struggling and that every single person in this building has issues and

The last four years of high school for me is like a blur. When people tell you that your senior year

insecurities. Whether you like high school or not, no one likes being put down or feeling like they don’t belong.

If I have any advice for anyone in high school, it’s just to be kind. Be kind to your peers, be kind to your teachers, and be kind to yourself. Don’t let anyone feel like they’re less than you because they’re not. You aren’t less than anyone and you aren’t above anyone else either.

We’re all here for the same reason. You’re going to be stressed, you’re going to get hurt, and you’re probably going to lose people, but that’s just the way it is. You can’t control people and you can’t control what happens to you. You can control the way you act and the way you treat both yourself and others. I promise that just being kind to people will get you so much further in high school and in life.

I’d rather leave here knowing that I at least made an effort to be kind rather than to have brought someone down.

If I’m taking anything with me when I

flies by fast, believe it. When I think about all the memories that I’ve made in high school, I’ll definitely think about my senior year.

I’ve made closer bonds with my friends than I would have ever imagined, I want to just thank you guys for putting up with my crap, making the best memories, and cracking hilarious inside jokes that I’ll definitely cherish. I’ll really miss my Konah family and how we all get along with each other, get into crazy shenanigans, and laugh almost every day.

What I won’t miss is waking up every morning at 6 a.m., walking through the huge crowd of people in the lobby, and the constant PDA that I always see on my way to class. All things considered I just want to thank my teachers for putting time and effort to help me understand things, and pushing me to be the best that I could be. I also want to give a shout out to Mr. LaForest for being a great dude and for looking like Jim from the office.

I want to thank Emily Small for signing away her first born child to me #sorryDalton. For always laughing at my jokes,

The past four years of our lives have been entirely dedicated to this school.

This is the end of a chapter of our lives.

It’s crazy to think about how we cleaned out our lockers for the last time, how we said goodbye to our favorite teachers for the last time, how we did our last high school homework assignments and tests. It’s crazy to think about how we will never have to walk back in these doors after Saturday. For all we know, we may never see each other again.

It’s crazy to think about how many experiences we have had together over the years. As a class, we’ve had our first and last homecomings, we’ve gone to prom, Fireside, Snowball, basketball games, spirit weeks, and classes.

For some of us, high school was fantastic. For others, high school was awful. High

leave Sentinel, it’s going to be the relationships I’ve made, what I’ve learned from the good and the bad ones, and the memories they have given me. I genuinely can’t think of a single person I wish bad things upon and I can’t imagine how doing so would help me move on in life at all.

I’ll always wish I would have been kinder to people here and I know I definitely could have been. However realizing this only makes me want to be better moving forward. None of us can change anything from the last four years, but we can at least take what we’ve learned to do better in the future.

I genuinely wish the best for everyone in our senior class, those I’ve gotten to know, those I haven’t, those I wish I would have gotten to know better, and those I might have wronged. High school is what you make of it. If you make the effort to be kind to people, to let yourself make mistakes, and to let yourself grow up, I promise it won’t be so bad.

and for sticking with me to the end. I’ll definitely make sure to visit you in Bozeman. I love you buddy!

I want to thank Ciara Azure for driving me everywhere for four years straight and never making me pay for gas and being one of my closest friends. I hope we stay lifelong friends. I love you buddy!

I want to thank George Hangas for helping me pass Spanish 4. Also George I hope we continue our YouTube channel and make videos every Tuesday and Thursday.

Lastly I want to give a shout out to Lily Johnson for drinking all my Sunny D whenever you come over, and you and Anna for always making me laugh.

I want everyone to jump at every opportunity they get this summer to experience something new, spend time with your friends as much as possible. Enjoy the little moments you have with everyone.

As we look back at the adventures we’ve shared and the lessons that we’ve learned, I hope that everyone in the graduating class of 2017 is successful and proud of themselves.

school wasn’t my cup of tea, but I’m glad I went to Sentinel. It allowed me to push myself outside my comfort zone, and it gave me a friend group I never could have imagined.

It taught me that people being rude doesn’t reflect on me, it generally reflects on the other person and who they are. You, my fellow seniors, taught me that I am stronger than you think I am, and that I can be whoever I want to be, whether you taught me that intentionally or not.

There are people in this school who made sure I was always working hard and that I always felt welcomed, and those individuals never get enough gratitude for the jobs they do.

Keintz- Thank you for giving me a safe space to write and design and explore who I

am. I loved your classes and I loved having you as a teacher. I wouldn’t trade a moment in your classroom or ghost hunting for anything. Konah was a lot to handle, but I’m so glad I was editor for a year. I learned so much in that brief time. Thank you for being the person you are, and for going above and beyond what is required of you every day when it comes to taking care of all of us journalism kids. You’re amazing.

Hartman- Thank you for giving me a chance to push myself. This year I pushed myself harder than I ever have before in DECA because I wanted to make you proud, and I finally got my name on that finalist plaque. DECA was one of the best things to See ULBERG P 14

With her retirement rapidly approaching, Reimers is looking forward to the extra time she will have to quilt, travel, and bake cookies for her neighbors.

However, she isn’t about to leave without giving a few words of advice to the students and the school she has dedicated the last 30 years of her life to.

change something. Knowing he didn’t want to retire, the thought of moving to a different school came to mind. With a job opening at Sentinel, Taylor took the chance and moved, which turned out to be a good decision.

“While moving my stuff into my new room at Sentinel after the last day of school, I could hear the ‘Summer Break Party’ going on in the courtyard,” Taylor said. “When I peeked my head out the door I knew instantly that I made the right decision. Teachers were hugging each other and everyone was congratulating everyone else. It was obvious that they were proud of their work with students and felt they had made a difference in their lives. I will never forget this moment.”

Realizing that making the move was a good choice, Taylor looked forward to continuing his teaching career.

“Try on a lot of hats. Take as many electives and other classes as you can, because you might not know where you might fit in.

This is your opportunity to try new things for free, and you may just discover that there is something here that is a passion for you, even though it may not be what you had in mind,” Reimers said.

Her words of wisdom also extended far beyond a high school classroom.

“Don’t worry so much about the money, choose a job based on how you feel when you’re doing it, and how you feel about what you do,” Reimers said. “There is a great sense

of satisfaction in teaching, and I get this warm, fuzzy feeling when I can help kids be successful at something and they’re proud of what they have made.”

Reimers wants all students to accomplish what she has-- to find a job where you can enjoy yourself, where going to work doesn’t seem like a chore.

“When you are doing stuff you love, it’s not like having to go to work. It’s fun. I can’t imagine myself doing any other job,” Reimers said. Many of her students would agree.

Reimers has made her life about the kids who walk into her classroom and she’s going

to miss it when she’s gone.

“It’s all about the kids. That’s what I know I’m really going to miss; the kids and the fun times and the laughs,” Reimers said.

Reimers may miss her students, but not as much as her students are going to miss her after she retires. It’s hard to find a teacher that immediately offers you soup when you walk into her classroom, regardless of whether or not she knows you. That’s a true showing of who Lois Reimers is as a person and as a teacher-- someone who puts students first without knowing who they are the second they walk through her door.

“It’s always been about the kids. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing your students progress. Even when it’s been a long day and the adults around me are driving me crazy, the students keep me coming back each day,” Taylor said.

As you can see, Taylor embodies the aspects of the teacher with the sole purpose of advancing his students.

“If there is one thing I’m proud of most, it would be the way in which I have been able to teach the kids and actually see them learn the curriculum,” Taylor said.

Claiming he hasn’t changed his tactic since his second year of teaching, it must be some sort of magic.

Taylor said, “When I first started, teachers explained to me that students wouldn’t respect me unless I made myself out as some-

one strict. They said things like ‘be a witch until Halloween’ or ‘show them who’s boss’ but for some reason that just didn’t feel right.

I learned very quickly that I had to teach to my personality and that kids respond to positive teaching much better than negative.”

With this in mind Taylor was able to connect with his students and teach them in a way they have never been taught before.

“I believe I was born to teach. Even if I could go back and change I wouldn’t. I have always been comfortable around the students and I think that that makes them comfortable around me,” said Taylor.

Now after 35 years, Taylor is expecting his retirement and reflecting on all the memories he has made teaching.

Thinking of his upcoming retirement, Taylor explained, “There is just a time when you can feel that your teaching time is just about up. For me it was around Christmas last year.

There is just so many other things to do in life

and it is time for me to move on.”

Admitting that it will be a jolt not coming into school early in the morning, Taylor is excited for the next chapter in his life.

“At home and during my free time, I find my mind wandering back to school, so I wonder what it will wander to when it doesn’t have school to dwell on,” Taylor said.

Sentinel will be losing an outstanding character from their teaching community. The next science teacher to come into Sentinel High School will have a hard time following Taylor’s act. They will have to grow fast into the six foot nine inch shadow of enthusiasm and success that Taylor leaves on everyone he has touched with his teaching and friendship.

Taylor said, “I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished in the classroom but the job is never done. I hope Sentinel continues to improve the scientific standpoint inspires students to be the best they can. I guess that is just what I try to do.”

Going into high school, I had no idea what to expect. I was naive and impressionable. TV shows and movies depict it as either the best four years of someone’s life, or as a place full of bullies along with girls who seem as if they are straight from the movie Mean Girls.

When I hear the words “high school,” I think about homework, sleep deprivation, stress, anxiety. I feel unmotivated, I have to maintain a certain grade point average to be successful, I have to be on time because after all, the tardy policy is the most important policy, right? I have to join clubs and academics to better my transcript (clubs are not a bad thing, they actually help expand your friend group and it is actually a really great thing so join clubs). It is recommended to take AP classes to also better my transcript.

Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy my high school career, and I probably will miss some aspects of it. High school can be a great experience, and it has a ton of important value.

It’s the place where teens can grow up, mature, gain responsibility, learn work ethic, etc. There could definitely be more realistic classes offered, but overall, high school does involve a four year time span for teens to grow as a person and discover new interests.

I thought I would learn an abundance of important material throughout my four years of being here, however, that was only half right. Here’s what I learned: I have anxiety and it’s actually really bad, the gym lobby is basically the mosh pit of Sentinel, the bathrooms are hot and smell bad, the quadratic

happen to me in high school. Thank you for being the one to put the hours in behind the scenes to make these opportunities possible.

formula, red dot tests had no influence on me to pick up a book, the halls are too crowded, the assemblies are chaotic and mainly pertain to only a certain aspect of the school, everyone here is a bad driver and suck at parking (especially during the winter), the parking lot is actually the underclassmen trash can, and the 500 Building is the safest spot in the school.

Not everything about my high school experience was bad. I took great classes and learned the basics needed for a general education. Junior year, I took psychology with Stein and found out what I want to do with my future.

I made great friends and appreciate them all. I did lose friends, but it was for the betterment of myself and I’m glad it happened.

I really discovered things about myself that were surprising and I never thought I would be interested in the things I am interested in now. I myself grew as a person, and I know many other people did as well.

There were some teachers in particular that were amazing. They made the class fun and I really appreciate all of the teachers that have helped me. Stein and his psychology class really impacted me my junior year and I am very grateful because that determined my future plans. Sentinel has some really great teachers, and just a great staff all around. I am thankful for all of the memories that have come with high school, the good and the bad.

I will definitely remember my high school experience, no doubt about that, and I’m still in awe that the 2017 class is graduating. I truly wish the best for everyone graduating this year. High school definitely did go by fast, it doesn’t even seem real at the moment.

As a freshman, I didn’t have a very good understanding as to how high school worked.

Any advice I would give to someone is to just have fun. Popularity most definitely doesn’t matter, especially if you’re a cocky “popular kid”. School drama is awful and it will save you a lot of time to just avoid it. Don’t be embarrassed to be yourself. Get involved as much as you can, whether it’s in sports, arts or anything extracurricular. It will introduce you to new people, new opportunities and make high school so much more enjoyable. High school is just a speedbump and it’s up to you to make it count, so enjoy the little things and stay humble.

Kacee, Gabe, Sara, Molly, and company- you guys inspire me to be better and Gabe is the ideal person to argue with. It’s the greatest friendship ever.

A “senior goodbye”–– how does one say goodbye to something they dedicated the past four years of their life to? I have had to revolve my life around this school for so long.

Wake up, go to school, go to practice, procrastinate, do my homework, go to bed, repeat. Even on the weekends I would always find myself thinking about how my decisions could affect my school life. It may not have altered them, but at least I thought about it. I had to give so much to this school and what did I get back?

I can thank freshman year for ruining Little Caesars for me. I walked there everyday, I really do not know how I did it. Those were the days. I actually enjoyed waking up for school looking forward to seeing my friends. Those days passed quickly. Soon the waking up every morning at 6:45 really got to me. The motivation started to fade early and quickly for me.

Part of me wishes that someone would have told me the grades I received that year would come back to haunt me. The other part of me is glad no one did because once I found

out all classes matter the stress increased deeply.

Hopeful freshman George thought high school only got better. I found out the hard way, it does not. The workload increases, the stress increases, and the pressure increases. I will have to give a shout out to Mr. Shearer and Ms. Reinicke. Your block class taught me the correct way to study, how to be organized, and how important it is to have a good work ethic. It is because of your class I chose to challenge myself academically and push my boundaries.

Finally, an upperclassmen. The excitement grew to finally be out of this school and not going to lie, my ego grew too. The upperclassmen mentality really got to me. Shout out to Mrs. Allison––no matter what people say, always be that happy. Your class truly made my day better everyday. That year people started to ask me what my plans were for the future. I would say, “no clue, I will figure it out later.”

Well, it’s later, and still no clue.

Thank you to the hockey boys. You guys made my last season as a Bruin the best one yet. We accomplished so much and had one hell of time doing it. Specific shout out to all the senior boys, I would not have wanted to share it all with anybody else. To all you younger guys, keep it going. I cannot forget about the soccer guys. We didn’t get it done, but we had fun. Also, thanks to all my Hellgate friends that left me. You guys are quitters.

Senior year, the year of lasts. It really does fly by. People say it is the best year of your life. They say to enjoy everyday because you will regret it if you don’t, and they’re right.

I can thank my friends, teammates, coaches, and teachers for making it one to cherish. Not all good memories were made, but I will remember it. I have met people that have had such a positive impact on my life I will remember forever.

When you see the picture on twitter of a kid surrounded by a lot of friends captioned “freshmen year,” next to a picture of kid surrounded by one or two of his friends captioned “senior year,” know it is true. However, I could not be happier with the way things turned out.

To the class of 2017, thank you guys for making my high school experience a great one. I hope you guys are able to achieve your dreams and be all that you want to be.

Girls’ track wins first State AA title in Sentinel history

h The Sentinel Girls track team had a sed riously good weekend. On top of all of the e indvidual successes, the took home their first I ever state title. r Ashley McElmurry had a very imprese sive individual showing, placing 5th in the , 100 m Hurdles and 3rd in the 300 m Hurdles. k However, her greatest acheivement was both o winning the Triple Jump and setting a new y Montana All-Class Girls Triple Jump record, with her 38’ 7.75” jump. This broke the pret vious record set in 2012 by 3 inches. t “It was an amazing feeling. I didn’t know - what the state record was going into it, so o when I found out I broke the record it was an - amazing feeling,” McElmurry said. y Her fellow Spartan Lauren Heggen placed d second in triple jump.

I was lucky enough to have contributed to the Sentinel girls’ first state title, which was super cool to be a part of,” Heggen said.

The girls’ 1600 relay team of McElmurry, Syd Steele, Molly MacDonald, and Madeline Hamilton faired well, taking 4th on top of their own individual acheivements.

Hamilton had a 2nd place finish in the 800 m and Steele finished 4th in the girls’ 300m Hurdles.

In the field events, Emily Malone finished 2nd in Discus, with teammate Madi Arneson coming in 5th.

In Javeline, Malone again took home 2nd, followed by last year’s state champ Kylie Frolich who took 3rd.

Lastly, in shotput, Malone took 3rd, again leading another fellow spartan, Aaliyah Woods, who took 4th.

Overall, it was a successful track season for Sentinel, and we’d like to congratulate all athletes for all of their efforts throughout the year.

However, I wouldn’t have changed this season and all the memories I made with my partner for the world. I am really proud of our girls’ team and it was a great way to end the season with the win.”

Senior Sean Ramsbacher and Sophomore Ethan Violette also took third in the doubles competition, placing one spot higher than their fourth place finish in 2016.

“It felt great to place my senior year and end with an ace on the last point,” Ramsbacher said. “Sadly, we went up against Bozeman early, and lost to them.”

The luck of the draw was against the duo, as they met the number one seed from Bozeman in the semifinals.

“The Bozeman team is amazing. Sean and Ethan played a great match, and it truly should have been the final match instead of the semi-final,” Keintz said. “Unfortunately, that’s just the way the draws ended up.”

Softball season ends in disappointing losses at State tournament

of the Sentinel Konah Two weeks ago, in the divisional playoff games, the Spartans faced off against crosstown rival Missoula Hellgate, with the hopes of State on the horizion.

The girls started off with a great

first game 10-running the Knights , finishing at 10-0.

Then with a second vitory of 18-4 the Spartans were on their way to the state tournament in Great Falls over Memorial Day Weekend.

However, the state tournament didn’t go as planned.

Their first game was against local

team Great Falls High, and with the first point being scored off a controversial home run, the Spartans would go to lose 2-0 and play the next day.

The Spartans would win their first game against Helena Capital 8-4. However, the victory celebration was short lived.

But would later lose to Helena

High 5-3.

The final game of the tournament was between local teams.

State would go to a crosstown game against CMR Rustlers and Great Falls High Bison, with CMR going to win for the second consecutiv year 3-0.
