In 2025, everyone needs an estate plan, regardless of your socio-economic circumstances.
A simple estate plan will typically contain at least three documents; a durable medical power of attorney and a durable financial power of attorney. These documents give the authority to a person of your choice, to speak on your behalf on your medical and financial issues if you’re not able to make necessary decisions due to health issues. The third document, a will, is a way to pass your property upon death to whom you wish.
A trust might be an option in your estate planning instead of or in addition to a will. Trusts are useful estate planning tools that can accomplish a variety of goals. They can help avoid probate, minimize taxes, and be used to give property to minor or disabled loved ones. Trusts can be created during a person’s lifetime (Living Trusts) or at the person’s death (Testamentary Trusts). Some different types of Trusts from both categories are:
A person can transfer their assets to a Living Trust and, as trustee, continue using their assets as needed during their lifetime.
Several different types of Living Trusts provide flexible alternatives for minimizing capital gains and estate taxes, including the Charitable
Remainder Trust, Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust, Qualified Personal Residence Trust, Grantor Retained Annuity Trust, and Grantor Retained Unitrust.
A person can create a Trust under a Will, called a Testamentary Trust, which does not take effect until they are deceased.
Disability Trusts (also known as Special Needs Trusts)
A Disability Trust is a type of Living Trust that allows a disabled person under the age of 65 to use his/ her own assets, other than for food and shelter, for their special needs and keep public benefits, such as Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
3 reasons you may need a trust as part of your estate plan
n Are you concerned about protecting a gift from creditors or litigation?
n Does a loved one need nursing home care or Medicaid eligibility?
n Do you want to provide for children, grandchildren or charitable organizations?
The types of assets you own is another important consideration. Three typical reasons you might need a trust:
1
A loved one cannot be trusted with a large financial gift or has special needs. If you have concerns that a child does not have the financial skills to manage a financial gift or the loved one receives government benefits.
2You want to transfer complex assets in a thoughtful manner Trusts can be effective for keeping a vacation home or a closely held business in the family. For large charitable donations, a trust allows you to leave a vision for how you would like the gift used.

Limiting the potential for relationship-damaging fights is important. When you have worked hard and been successful, a trust may be able to limit conflict and the legal fees associated with litigation. ~

Many of us procrastinate when it comes to writing a will.
Many of us procrastinate when it comes to writing a will. Perhaps we don’t want to be reminded of our mortality. It may be a fear of the anticipated expense or a loss of control over property. But having a will extinguishes those fears. Want a few other reasons? A will contains your selection of who will receive what, when and how upon your death. You decide who will take care of your minor children. You facilitate the probate process (making it less expensive and quicker). You can disinherit individuals, make gifts or charitable donations and provide for your pets.
You decide who administers your estate to see that everything goes as you have directed. If no will exists, the state will determine how your property is divided.
This can be easily avoided with proper planning. By creating your will now, you can always add to the provisions or alter the document as your life evolves. It’s advisable to review your current will every five years to be sure that it’s up to date and still reflective of your future wishes.~

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”
Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance
Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)
$1,676 deductible (per benefit period)
It is possible to pay the $1676 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.
Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.
Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.
No coverage outside USA.
No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Medicare Part B Medical Insurance
Most people pay monthly $185 (Premium could be higher based on income)
$257 annual deductible. (this can increase each year)
80/20 after deductible.
Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, wellness & other Medicare approved benefits
Most doctors accept Medicare.
No coverage outside the USA.
No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
A & B are designed for people over age 65 and those with certain disabilities
Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap
Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.
Guarantee Issue at initial enrollment (Other special enrollment periods may be available)
These plans generally pay the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits
When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered
Can provide benefits outside USA
Plans are available through insurance companies.
Important to add Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties.
Must have Part A & B to enroll.
For more information visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
There is NO additional cost to use the services of a full time insurance professional. Please call us or a broker in your local area for additional assistance.

Medicare Advantage plans are governed by Medicare. They are only offered through insurance companies that have an annual contract with Medicare. They are NOT the same as Medigap policies. They must cover all Medicare approved services. Most Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage.
Premium varies by company and coverage. (Same premium for all ages).
Part B premium $185 is still paid (Premium can be higher depending on income)
There are many plan types available: PPO, HMO, HSA, etc.
Plans have co-pays and / or coinsurance for covered benefits & services.
Preventive care is covered 100%.
Plans have an annual out-of pocket maximum.
Plans may have additional services and discounts, including dental, vision, gym membership & more.
There is an Annual Election Period (AEP) which runs from October 15–December 7 of each year. This is the time to make changes in company or coverage.
Must have Part A & B to enroll.
Premium varies by company and coverage. (Same premium for all ages).
Plans are generally a variation of the following:
Annual Deductible
$0–$590 deductible (Generic prescriptions not subject to deductible)
Initial Coverage
You pay a co-pay or coinsurance until your total out of pocket costs reach $2,000 including deductible for the calendar year
Catastrophic Coverage
$0 for covered drugs on the plan’s formulary for the rest of the calendar year
Part D programs are generally purchased along with Medicare A & B and a Medicare Supplement (A-N)
Approved formulary insulins are $35 per month.
There is a penalty for late enrollment into Part D
Annual Election Period (AEP) is Oct 15 - Dec 7 each year
Must have Part A or B to enroll.

Rehabilitation Hospitals, sometimes referred to as Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals, provide intensive rehab to patients who are generally medically stable but need help to recover from injury or other medical conditions. They can be found within a hospital or in a free-standing building. Rehabilitation hospitals were created to provide services less costly on a per diem basis than general hospitals
but provide a high level of professional therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapies. Rehabilitation Hospitals must offer a minimum number of physician visits, increased daily rehab hours (3 hours/day, 5 days/week of PT, OT, and/or Speech), and interdisciplinary services including increased RN oversight and nursing hours per day.

Strong relationships between grandparents and grandchildren are more than just heartwarming. They have been shown to contribute to better health, sharper minds, and deeper emotional connections across generations.
At Right at Home, we’ve seen firsthand how relationships in grandfamilies (also called kinship families) improve the quality of life for both older adults and younger family members.
The Health Benefits Go Both Ways
For grandparents:
Reduces the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and even chronic illness.
Conversations and shared ac tivities also help keep the mind active, stimulating memory, language, and problem solving.
For grandchildren:
Greater emotional intelligence, resilience, and a stronger sense of identity.
n Don’t assume disinterest. Despite language difference Grandparents care and children are always listening.
n Ask open-ended questions. Encouraging storytelling and reflection.
n Be mindful of hearing or cognitive limitations.
n Respect different life stages. Understanding context helps both sides show compassion.
More stability, better behavior, and improved academic outcomes.
Communication gaps and language barriers can be bridged
Here are some tips for different generations to improve communication with each other:
In-home caregiving often highlights how much grandparents and grandchildren lean on one another. These roles can be deeply rewarding, but also emotionally complex for both parties.

n Schedule regular visits or calls.
n Share activities. Cook a favorite recipe together, take a walk, or explore family history.
n Use tech—current and older—to stay connected.
n Include caregiving support. Agencies like Right at Home can ease the load by providing daily assistance and helping maintain a safe, comfortable home environment.

Caregiving Equals Connection
Grandparent-grandchild relationships remind us that caregiving is more than a service; it’s a connection. At Right at Home, we’re proud to support families in building and maintaining those connections, every step of the way. ~

In Colorado, In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) is a Medicaidfunded program designed to assist individuals with disabilities or elderly individuals who need help with daily activities.
These services enable individuals to live independently in their own homes rather than in institutional settings. IHSS provides support with tasks like personal care, housekeeping, meal preparation, and medication management.
Eligible participants must meet specific criteria, including being a Colorado resident, requiring assistance due to a disability, and meeting
income and resource limits. Services are tailored to each individual’s needs and are delivered by trained caregivers, who may be family members or professional aides.
IHSS is an essential resource for people with disabilities or the elderly, enhancing their quality of life by promoting independence while providing necessary care. It also alleviates the financial burden of long-term institutional care, offering a more cost-effective and personalized solution for those in need.~

There’s a generation of older adults who pride themselves on grit. They’ve weathered wars, recessions, and raised families with little more than elbow grease and persistence.
So when everyday tasks like bathing, cooking, or managing medications become harder, their instinct is often to power through and not ask for help.
But here’s the thing: waiting too long to bring in support doesn’t preserve independence—it risks it. Falls, missed medications, malnutrition, and isolation are just a few of the
hidden consequences that can spiral into ER visits or permanent moves out of the home.
Getting help before there’s a crisis is the key to staying in control.
Home-based care isn’t about taking over someone’s life—it’s about reinforcing it. The right kind of support, delivered by trained professionals, can extend independence, prevent hospitalizations, and reduce the stress on adult children trying to do it all themselves. In many cas-

As we age, managing our health often becomes more complex— multiple doctors, prescriptions, and procedures can make it difficult to keep everything straight But staying organized is key to maintaining good health, ensuring continuity of care, and avoiding unnecessary complications.
. Here are a few simple and effective ways older adults can keep track of their medical history and doctor visits.
Start a Health Journal, Notebook or Binder – Include in your dedicated health journal a list of current medications and dosages, past surgeries and diagnoses, allergies and immunizations, healthcare provider contact information, and a log of appointments and any test results.
Use a Digital App or Smartphone Calendar – A simple smartphone calendar can track upcoming appointments, prescription reminders and questions to ask during provider visits. Or if not comfortable with technology, use a paper calendar and keep it in an easy to access spot.
friend to attend appointments with you, help manage paperwork and assist in decision making. A companion is very helpful especially assisting in recalling details.
Create a Medication List – Create an up-to-date medication list to keep in your purse or wallet. This is helpful in emergencies and is easy to find when at provider appointments.
Request Visit Summaries - After each appointment, ask for a printed summary. It will usually include what was discussed, changes in treatment, and next steps. File these in your health binder or keep in a safe place to reference easily.
Being proactive about managing your health information empowers you to make informed decisions, catch errors early, and make your doctor visits more productive. A little organization can lead to better health and greater peace of mind. ~
Designate a Health Advocate – Ask a trusted family member or

The Hidden Cost of “Toughing It Out”: Why Asking for Help Is a Strength, Not a Setback continued from page 91
es, just a few hours of help per week can make all the difference—keeping routines intact, dignity preserved, and families feeling supported.
We hear it all the time: “I wish we’d called sooner.”
If you’re not sure whether it’s time for help, try this: ask yourself whether tasks that used to feel easy now feel exhausting, confusing, or risky. Are meals skipped? Medications missed? Are you—or your loved one—avoiding the stairs, struggling with hygiene, or feeling more isolated than usual? These signs often whisper before they shout.
Aging with dignity doesn’t mean doing it alone. It means doing it wisely. ~
The strongest people know when to say: “I want to stay in my home, and I’m smart enough to get help to do that.”

Remember and Honor is a project dedicated to honoring our veterans by preserving their life stories, with emphasis on their time in uniform—so they are never lost, never forgotten.
To date, I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with over 600 veterans from Northern Colorado.
There has always been only one rule with this project: every veteran’s story matters.
It doesn’t matter whether they stormed a beach or spent their service peeling potatoes in KP duty. Their voices deserve to be heard for those who would like to tell their stories.
When starting this project twenty years ago, I focused on World War II and Korean War veterans because the clock was ticking with them. Of the 400 WWII veterans I’ve interviewed, only five are still with us today, as of summer 2025. My focus now is the Vietnam Veterans. The clock is now ticking for them, with age and many sadly battling the devastating effects of Agent Orange.
To every veteran reading this: please, share your story.
Whether through an interview, a written account, or simply a conversation with your family, your experiences matter. You have lived history. You have seen and felt what textbooks cannot capture. And those who love you will be forever grateful
To family members and friends: ask the veterans in your life to tell their story.
You may think you have all the time in the world, but the truth is, one day, the chance will be gone. The greatest way to honor them is to listen—to show them their experiences, their sacrifices, and their lives meant something.
If you or someone you know is a veteran who would like to share their story, I would be honored to help preserve it.
With gratitude,

Honor
