America Is Aging

America is aging. By 2050, the population of adults 65 and older is expected to rise by nearly 50%, according to the Population Reference Bureau.

That shift brings new challenges for healthcare systems. At Intermountain Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, Colorado, challenges are being met with the new Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit.

The unit cares for patients 70 and older who are vulnerable to setbacks during hospital stays. Instead of treating only a diagnosis, this care model focuses on the whole person.

n Are they alert and thinking clearly?

This collaborative approach ensures no detail is overlooked and care is individualized.

One feature is an emphasis on mobility. Each patient works with a mobility technician who helps them stay active safely during their stay.

“This unit is about understanding the unique vulnerabilities of older patients and creating a care environment that supports their best possible recovery,” explained Mary Cisneros, RN, ACE project manager.

The goal is simple: Help seniors leave the hospital stronger, healthier, and better prepared to return home.

Daily at 10:30 a.m., a team of nurses, therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, and case managers reviews each patient’s progress. The team asks questions like:

n Is the patient eating and drinking enough?

n How well are they moving?

According to Cisneros, encouraging movement leads to fewer falls; lower risk of pressure injuries; reduced delirium; and better functional independence. A short period of immobility can cause significant decline for older adults. The ACE program helps prevent that by prioritizing daily movement. Patients are then less likely to need a stay at a rehab or long-term care site.

“Our caregivers are deeply invested in this work. They feel called to care for older adults, and that connection makes a real difference,” said McManus, a leader on the ACE team.

The ACE unit also integrates social engagement. Good Samaritan volunteers join patients in twice-daily activities such as puzzles, art projects, music, and group walks. ~

DEAR VALUED READERS:

For over two decades, I have been honored and proud to serve the seniors of our community. As Publisher of this resource guide, I can assure you that the entire Seniors Blue Book team works tirelessly to provide you with an abundance of resources in the senior realm.

This edition’s Letter From The Publisher is more personal than normal. You see, I lost both of my parents in the past year and a half. It is fair to say I ‘walked the walk and talked the talk’ as my sisters and I navigated the underbelly of caretaking an elderly loved one (times two).

Mom was struggling for nearly a decade and Dad was her caretaker. Dad was a proud Army veteran and a doting husband who didn’t like to ask (or even accept) help as he thought he could fully care for Mom on his own. But, like many caretakers before him, he didn’t truly understand it was to his detriment to try to do it ‘all’. After MANY hospital visits for them both, months of rehabilitation between them, and legal/estate matters,

I was reminded of the inherent value of having access to resources in the palm of my hand. There were setbacks, pitfalls and mistakes made along the way. There were questions beyond questions that came to light as we served as advocates for our folks.

Sadly, a bad fall brought on brain surgery for Dad that eventually incapacitated him. After his passing, Mom quickly followed about 18 months later after succumbing to a surprise diagnosis of Stage IV cancer. Gratefully, they are back together again – as it should be.

Whether you’re a caregiver seeking support, a senior looking for helpful information or a professional dedicated to serving our beloved senior community, the Seniors Blue Book is here to be a beacon of support and knowledge. Thank you again for your support of the work we do at the Seniors Blue Book – it is sincerely a privilege to serve our senior healthcare community!

The 7 Most Common Estate Planning Myths

There are many misconceptions and myths circulating throughout social media and internet about estate planning, specifically about wills and trusts.

At Althaus Law, our estate planning attorneys are here to clear up the confusion and clean up the mess. Below are some of the most common myths we run into:

1

All I need is a simple will: Whoops, now my family is in probate and has to go to court. A will is just an instruction sheet for the judge to get through the court process. Sure, it may make the process go a little quicker and easier, but your family is still in court. There are plenty of other documents you can use to avoid the process altogether!

2

your spouse, as mentioned above, you should also name backups to your spouse in case they are incapacitated or otherwise can’t do the job.

4Online plans are great: No, they aren’t.

5You can draft deeds by yourself without a lawyer: While you can legally do this, it’s a terrible idea. Your house is one of the most expensive assets you own. It is worth paying a lawyer to make sure you transfer title of it correctly, so it doesn’t wind up in the wrong hands.

6Trusts give you creditor protection: Not all of them. It’s important to find out what ones do and do not.

I should name multiple powers of attorney to act at the same time: Nope, it definitely is not a good idea to put more than one person to be in charge at the same time. It is a good idea to have one person and then multiple back-up people, but not people that have to act together. If they disagree, you are likely going to court.

3

I only need to name my spouse to be in charge in powers of attorney: No! While you should name

7Secrets are great: No! Don’t keep your plan a secret. Everyone in the plan should know what’s going on.

If you have questions about any of these myths and want help with your will, trust, or other estate planning documents, give us a call at Althaus Law 720-704-0145. ~

Matters of the Heart – Caring for Those Who Once Cared for Us

Across our communities, older adults are facing hard choices. Many are living longer but with fewer resources—rising housing costs, limited income, and growing health needs. For our most vulnerable neighbors, age 55 and older, the question has become not just how long they will live, but how well.

The truth is, this is more than an economic issue—it’s a matter of the heart.

Every person deserves to age with dignity, surrounded by care, safety, and respect. Yet too many older adults struggle to afford both housing and healthcare. Families are stretched thin, caregivers are exhausted, and the cost of daily living rises faster than most fixed incomes.

life every day. Our team—drivers, nurses, social workers, therapists, and dietitians—work together to support the whole person, not just their health needs. Participants find friendship, purpose, and peace of mind knowing someone is there to help them live the life they choose. Families find relief, knowing their loved one is cared for with dignity and respect.

TRU PACE isn’t just a program—it’s a promise to our elders that they are never alone.

Because at its core, aging is not just a medical journey—it’s a human one.

Programs like TRU PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) remind us there is a better way. By bringing medical care, social services, meals, therapy, and transportation together under one roof, PACE helps older adults stay independent and safe at home—often for less than the cost of nursing home care. It’s a model built on compassion, connection, and community.

At TRU PACE, this care comes to

And when our community stands together for our elders, we all grow stronger at heart.~

Moving with Care: Guiding Your Parents Through the Transition

Moving aging parents and their furniture into a retirement home can be both an emotional and logistical challenge.

The process involves more than just physical relocation—it requires managing sentimental attachments, downsizing possessions, and ensuring comfort in a new environment. Parents may feel anxious about leaving their longtime home, while family members face the added stress of sorting through decades of belongings and deciding what to keep, donate, or discard. Coordinating timelines with the retirement facility and making sure the new space is accessible can also become overwhelming.

Hiring a professional senior

moving company can make this transition much smoother. These specialists handle packing, furniture transport, setup, and even downsizing with care, efficiency, and compassion. They bring the right tools, experience, and sensitivity to protect both your parents’ possessions and their peace of mind. By entrusting the details to professionals, families can reduce stress, ensure safety, and concentrate on what truly matters—helping their loved ones settle comfortably into their new home. ~

Understanding Senior Care In-Home Options

Choosing the right care option for seniors can be overwhelming. This guide breaks down the differences between different in-home options, helping you make informed decisions for your cllients, patients or loved ones. For more information please visit seniorsbluebook.com.

NON MEDICAL HOME CARE

What is it:

Who is it for:

In-home assistance focusing on personal care and daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation and companionship. Services are non-medical in nature and are designed to help seniors maintain independence in their home.

Best suited for seniors who need help with everyday tasks but do not require medical supervision or treatment.

HOME HEALTH CARE

What is it:

Who is it for:

Medical care at home provided by licensed healthcare professionals, including aides, nurses, physical therapist, and occupational therapist. Services may include wound care, administering medications, managing chronic conditions, and post surgery care and therapy. A doctor must refer a patient for home health care.

Appropriate for seniors who need medical treatment or rehabilitation at home.

HOSPICE CARE

What is it:

Who is it for:

Medical care at home for patients with a lifelimiting illness. Hospice emphasizes palliative care rather than curative treatment. An interdisciplinary team (Doctor, Nurse, Aide, Social Worker, Chaplain and Volunteer Services) works together to help the patient, caregiver, and family.

Suitable for patient with a terminal illness. A doctor must refer a patient for hospice care.

Few of Us Are Prepared for Our Aging Journey

Over 20 years ago, my grandparents needed constant, in-home care. My mom struggled to adjust to their decline, despite having taken care of my great-grandmother just a few years prior. It was my first realization that few of us are prepared for our aging journey.

On a recent visit to my mom’s, she collapsed in pain, unable to rise from the floor. Her replacement hip had failed after 16 years. Luckily, she got a replacement for her replacement the very next day. She went home two days later needing care. Although my mom had gone through very similar experiences

with her parents, we were wholly unprepared. Fortunately, we were able to rely on in-home care services that assist with daily living and in-home physical therapy, and because of this, she’s doing much better now.

No one is ready for the aging process, parent or child. In-home medical and non-medical care agencies are there to help us with the process with dignity and comfort, no matter how unprepared we are. ~

More Than Housing: How Community Living Helps Seniors Thrive

Finding the right home is one of the most important choices we make as we age.

While affordability and comfort matter, the real difference often comes from the community we live in and the people around us. For many older adults, living in a community setting offers far more than just an apartment. It provides connection, support, and opportunities to thrive.

At Boulder Housing Partners, we have seen the benefits of senior living communities like Golden West firsthand. When seniors live alongside peers, they share experiences, create friendships, and develop a sense of belonging that can be difficult to find in isolation. Community living helps reduce loneliness, promotes well-being, and fosters a safe environment where neighbors look out for one another.

together. As noted in the press release: “The Iris Bistro is more than a dining space. It is a hub of connection, laughter, and daily interaction where residents can enjoy healthy meals while sharing time with friends and neighbors.”

Residents at Golden West often describe the community as a place where life feels vibrant and connected. The availability of activities, shared amenities, and common spaces means seniors can stay engaged, whether through a simple cup of coffee at the Bistro or by participating in group events and programs. The value of living in a senior community goes far beyond housing. It creates an environment of support, safety, and connection, three essentials for aging well in Boulder. ~

Golden West Senior Living, for example, has recently expanded its offerings with the new Iris Bistro, a space designed not only to nourish residents but also to bring them

Building Meaningful Social Engagement: The Power of Living in Community

Human connection isn’t just a pleasant addition to life, it is one of the strongest predictors of health, happiness, and longevity.

For older adults, staying socially engaged is more than a pastime; it is essential nourishment for emotional well-being, cognitive resilience, and a deep sense of purpose.

Experts agree: community is more than shared walls. It is shared experiences, familiar laughter echoing down the hall, and the comfort of knowing you are surrounded by people who understand your journey because they are walking their own version of it right alongside you.

And when seniors engage with others regularly, something remarkable happens.

Mood Improves

Daily conversation and companionship reduce feelings of loneliness and depression. Even small interactions—chatting with a neighbor over coffee or joining a morning walking group—can uplift spirits and strengthen emotional health. Research consistently shows that strong social ties act as a protective buffer against stress and sadness.

Minds Stay Active

Games, discussions, hobbies, and group activities stimulate memory, language, and reasoning skills. Social engagement encourages

Building Meaningful Social Engagement

curiosity and learning, which supports cognitive health. Scientists have found that older adults who regularly participate in social activities are less likely to experience cognitive decline and often maintain sharper thinking skills well into later years.

Health Strengthens

Staying socially connected is linked to lower stress, better sleep, stronger immune function, and reduced risk of chronic conditions. Seniors who feel supported by a community often take part in more physical activities, attend health appointments more consistently, and experience a greater sense of security, each of which contributes to better overall wellness.

Purpose Grows

person. It’s easier to stay engaged, try new things, and build lasting relationships when you’re surrounded by peers who encourage, inspire, and walk alongside you.

In a supportive community, older adults gain:

n A built-in social network: Opportunities for connection are right outside the door - meals, clubs, celebrations, and simple everyday interactions.

n Shared safety and comfort: Knowing help is nearby reduces anxiety and makes it easier to stay active and involved.

n Spontaneous joy: From hallway conversations to impromptu music sessions, community life is filled with small, meaningful moments.

Being part of a community brings renewed meaning. Whether contributing to an activity, offering support to a neighbor, or forming a new friendship, seniors find that their presence matters. That sense of purpose fuels motivation, creativity, and joy. Purpose is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline.

The Power of Living in Community

Living in a community creates a natural rhythm that supports each

n Interdependence: Everyone has something to offer, and everyone benefits from the contributions of others. That reciprocity strengthens confidence and belonging.

n Greater resilience: During challenging times—illness, grief, transitions—community members support one another, easing burdens and nurturing hope.

Living in community doesn’t erase the complexities of aging, but it

softens them. It creates a space where older adults can thrive rather than simply endure, where laughter and learning are woven into daily life, and where every person is seen, valued, and included.

Meaningful social engagement isn’t something that “just happens”—it’s something we build. And the foundation is community. Because where people gather, purpose grows.

Where connection thrives, wellness follows.

And where community is strong, so are the individuals who call it home. ~

If You Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail

The first time I heard this I was immediately confronted with my own failure to plan.

Having helped hundreds of families find the “right fit” senior living community for their loved one has confirmed this axiom. I’m not the only one who didn’t think about planning for long term care!

70% of people 65 or older will need long term care. Only around 30% of the population will not need additional healthcare to live to the end of life at home. That means most of us will need to do some

planning. Start now! Connect with a Senior Placement Company and begin the planning process. The service is FREE and Placement companies are a rich source of information regarding community costs, spend-down and care options. You don’t have to plan to fail! ~

Celebrating Seven Years of Advocacy: How COPRA Has Made a Landmark Impact on Senior Rights in Colorado!

Over the past seven years, the Colorado Placement Referral Alliance (COPRA) has transformed from a grassroots coalition into a leading advocate for ethical senior placement and advocacy.

Our dedication to transparency, accountability, and compassion led to a historic achievement: the passage of the Family Choice Act, the first law of its kind in the U.S. We have worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of seniors and protect their rights, making significant progress for older adults in Colorado.

A Mission Rooted in Integrity and Care

COPRA was founded to improve standards in senior placement and referral services. It has worked diligently to promote ethical practices, ensuring that families and seniors receive clear and unbiased guidance when making decisions about senior living options. Over the years, COPRA has:

n Educated families about their rights and the senior placement process.

n Created a Code of Ethics and Best Practices for professionals in placement.

n Provided training and certification for ethical placement agents.

n Established a network of trusted professionals across Colorado to promote collaboration.

n Advocated for laws at the state

level that prioritize the voices of seniors and their loved ones.

The Family Choice Act: A Historic Win for Seniors

In a significant milestone, COPRA played a crucial role in drafting and advocating for the Family Choice Act. This legislation was passed by the Colorado legislature and signed into law, making Colorado the first state in the nation to acknowledge and protect a family’s right to choose who represents them in senior placement decisions.

The Family Choice Act supports the dignity and independence of older adults by ensuring that:

n Families and seniors can choose their own placement agent without being influenced by healthcare facilities or providers.

n Placement agents are required to fully disclose their relationships and referral fees with senior living communities.

n Seniors have the freedom to make decisions without facing conflicts of interest or pressure.

This legislation establishes a national precedent and has already attracted interest from other states wanting to replicate Colorado’s model for senior advocacy.

Continued on page 95

Celebrating Seven Years of Advocacy ...

continued from page 91

Looking Ahead

With the Family Choice Act now enacted, COPRA’s mission persists. The organization is broadening its initiatives to:

n Provide ongoing education to professionals and the public.

n Ensure enforcement of the new law through partnerships with state agencies.

n Support ethical agents and referral services that are dedicated to transparency.

n Advocate for further protections and resources for seniors and their caregivers.

A Thank You to Our Supporters

This milestone would not have been possible without the collec-

tive efforts of COPRA’s dedicated members, community partners, legislators, and—most importantly— the families and seniors who shared their stories and advocated for their rights.

As we reflect on the past seven years, COPRA is committed to creating a future where every senior and their family can navigate the path to care with confidence, dignity, and freedom of choice. We remain dedicated to ensuring that all seniors and their families have the support they need to approach care with assurance and respect.
