HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED IF PRAYER
In a world filled with scientific explanations and technological solutions, it’s easy to question the efficacy of something as intangible as prayer. Yet, research suggests that prayer has tangible benefits for our lives. Studies have shown that prayer encourages recovery from mental illness, improves fertility rates, and enhances overall well-being. One particularly fascinating study conducted in India found that women undergoing in vitro fertilization who were prayed for by strangers had a fertility rate more than double that of those who weren’t prayed for. These findings aren’t just spiritually encouraging; they’re scientifically intriguing.
But beyond the measurable outcomes, prayer is fundamentally about our relationship with God. The book of Hosea paints a poignant picture of God’s desire for connection with us. “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son,” God says, using the tender language of a parent. Even when we stray, God’s love remains constant, inviting us back with open arms.
This invitation extends to the depths of our hearts. Many of us struggle with the notion that our prayers must be perfect, that we must present only our best selves to God. But the Psalms tell a different story. In Psalm 139, we see David pouring out his heart to God, moving from praise to raw anger and back to humble introspection. This teaches us a profound truth: God invites us to share our whole hearts, including the messy parts
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts,” David prays. This vulnerability before God is not just allowed;
it’s encouraged. We don’t have to pretend or suppress our emotions in prayer. God is big enough to handle our anger, our doubts, and our fears.
Another crucial aspect of prayer is understanding that God hears us, even when it doesn’t feel like it. The story of the Israelites in Egypt is a powerful testament to this truth. For 430 years, generations of Israelites cried out to God, seemingly without answer. Yet God was not deaf to their prayers. He saw their misery and heard their cries, even though His rescue came centuries later.
This long wait can be discouraging when we apply it to our own lives. We pray for healing, for reconciliation, for miracles, and sometimes those answers don’t come in our lifetime. It’s tempting to believe that God doesn’t hear or doesn’t care.
But here’s the most important thing to remember about prayer: God has already answered our greatest prayer.
The Gospels tell us of Jesus’ ministry, filled with miracles and wonders that drew crowds and sparked hope. But all of these signs pointed to the ultimate miracle: the cross. At Calvary, Jesus took on our sinfulness so that we could be clothed in His righteousness. This is the world’s greatest miracle – where dead souls are made alive.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pray for other miracles or healing. We absolutely should! But when those specific prayers aren’t answered as we hope, we can rest in the assurance that God has already performed the most crucial miracle in our lives.
So how do we cultivate a meaningful prayer life?
It starts with recognizing the gift we’ve been given. Just as Esau tragically traded his birthright for a bowl of soup, we must be careful not to trade our precious relationship with God for fleeting distractions.
One simple yet profound practice comes from Mother Teresa. She suggested starting each day by saying, “Good morning, Jesus.” This small act can have a remarkable impact on our spiritual lives. It’s not about the words themselves, but about reaffirming the most important relationship in our lives first thing every morning.
This practice aligns with what Augustine, the great theologian, taught. He said that the problem with humanity isn’t that we love the wrong things, but that we love the right things in the wrong order. By starting our day acknowledging Jesus, we begin to order our lives correctly, putting our relationship with God at the forefront.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED IF PRAYER REALLY WORKS?
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED IF PRAYER REALLY
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED IF PRAYER REALLY WORKS?
As we cultivate this habit, we may not see immediate results. But over time, this simple practice can transform our perspective and deepen our connection with God. It’s like planting a seed – small and seemingly insignificant at first, but with the potential for tremendous growth.
Prayer is more than just a religious duty or a way to ask for things. It’s the heartbeat of our relationship with God. Remember these key truths about prayer:
Prayer is more than just a religious duty or a way to ask for things. It’s the heartbeat of our relationship with God. Through prayer, we open ourselves to God’s presence, invite His work in our lives, and align our hearts with His will.
As you go through your week, consider starting each day with a simple “Good morning, Jesus.” Let it be the first step in ordering your life around the values, practices, and relationships that keep you open to God’s transformative work in your life.
Prayer has the power to change us from the inside out. It’s not about perfecting a technique, but about nurturing a living, breathing relationship with the Creator of the universe.
So let’s approach prayer with renewed confidence, authenticity, and expectation, knowing that as we draw near to God, He promises to draw near to us!

1. God desires a relationship with you, no matter your past or present circumstances.
2. You’re invited to share your whole heart with God –the good, the bad, and the ugly.
3. God hears your prayers, even when the answers aren’t immediate or obvious.
4. The cross is the ultimate answer to our deepest prayer – the need for reconciliation with God.

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixthleading cause of death in the United States and the fifth-leading cause of death for individuals age 65 and older. This devastating and debilitating disease is the ultimate thief — of memories, independence, control, time, and, ultimately, life.
And the disease is often dealt with in silence. Those facing the disease feel a stigma surrounding their diagnosis and often don’t seek the support they need. At the Alzheimer’s Association, we hear from individuals daily that they “feel alone.” Family and friends stop visiting because of “abnormal” behavior — a symptom of the disease — and caregivers become more and more isolated.
We want those diagnosed and their families to know that there
is hope, and there is help, through the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Pennsylvania. There are more than 5 million Americans currently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and more than 15 million caregivers. In Pennsylvania alone, there are more than 400,000 individuals diagnosed. We are here to provide education and support to the millions who face dementia every day, while advancing critical research toward methods of treatment and prevention, ultimately to end Alzheimer’s disease.
We have offices locally in Harrisburg and support staff throughout the region for those facing this disease to meet with others in similar situations.
Additionally, we host the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This is the Association’s largest annual awareness and fundraising event, which occurs during the fall. On Walk day, an Opening Ceremony will feature local speakers and a presentation of Promise Flowers to honor the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. The Walk experience is unlike any other and provides participants, friends and family the opportunity to meet and talk with other participants while raising funds to help combat this devastating disease. There will also be education and volunteering opportunities in addition to finding
out about resources available in your area.
The money raised allows our chapter to contribute to research to find a cure. These funds also help support programs and services that advance accurate and timely diagnosis of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In addition, money raised ensures significant increases to affordable, high-quality care and support for people with the disease and their caretakers.
Help us break the silence and start the conversation. Join us, along with thousands of others in your community, at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

When facing significant life transitions—like right-sizing your home for aging in place or downsizing for a move— planning is essential. A compassionate and skilled Senior Move Management (SMM) team can make all the difference in easing the process for seniors and their families.
A trustworthy SMM company offers more than logistics; it provides emotional and practical support during challenging times. The most effective teams possess key qualities that define their service:
1. Compassion and Empathy:
These are the foundations of successful senior transitions. A qualified SMM team must be emotionally intelligent, patient, and respectful, moving at a pace that acknowledges the emotional weight of the process. Listening attentively and offering kind, supportive care builds trust and reduces stress.
2. Clear Communication:
Transparency is vital. Seniors and their families must understand what to
expect at every stage. A good SMM company communicates clearly about pricing, services, and timelines, avoiding jargon and ensuring accessibility for clients who may have hearing or cognitive challenges. Written plans and updates ensure confidence and clarity.
3. Strong Organizational Skills:
Relocations involve coordinating real estate deadlines, floor planning, and move-in schedules with senior living communities or families. Experienced SMM teams bring project management skills to streamline this complex process.
4. Knowledge of Aging and Accessibility:
Understanding the health and mobility needs of aging clients is critical. Senior Move Managers should factor in medical conditions and accessibility concerns when planning the transition.

Throughout my twenty-year career in Estate Planning and Elder Law, I have always found pride in our team here at Bellomo & Associates. While we strive to do the very best for our clients, and although my pride in our firm has remained strong, I continued to feel as though we needed a key component. For a long time, I could not put my finger on exactly what this missing component may be until I met a friend who had begun to incorporate Life Care Planning into his firm. He explained how they had hired a Client Care Advocate to serve his clients better and after several conversations, I knew that this was exactly what we were missing.
Providing our clients and families with clear answers that help them feel confident and knowledgeable about their decisions is a priority. There were few things more frustrating than being unable to provide the answers and support they needed when we got questions such as, “How do I make sure that Mom is safe at home,” or “Is assisted living the right choice,” or “When should we consider a skilled nursing facility?” We would refer to outside
organizations to get families the help they needed, but I knew that ultimately, I wanted our firm internally equipped to help in this area.
For nearly three years, our firm has been a member of the Life Care Planning Law Firms Association. Meg Motter, a licensed social worker, and our Client Care Advocate, brings thirty-five years of experience to the table. She helps families assess their current needs, answer any questions, help to provide the right course of action for their individual needs and wants, and so much more. Being able to add this piece to our firm has served to benefit both our clients and our staff. We are now able to support and advise in ways we could not have before.
If you are interested in learning more about Life Care Planning and specifically about how our Client Care Advocate can assist you and your family in putting together a plan, please call our office at (717) 844-9011, where we would love to help you.
It is a gift to be able to care for our community in this way.

At Darrell M. Sipe Opticians and Hearing Aids, we see patients who are of the age where either they wear multifocal lenses or they are getting to the point where they need multifocal lenses. For those who are not currently wearing glasses with multifocal lenses, the question of which lenses are best, needs to be answered.
The first option that needs to be explored is progressive no-line bifocals. These lenses are ever evolving and give the wearer a wide range of vision, from their distance at the top down to the near vision at the bottom, these lenses gradually increase in power as the wearer looks down lower through the frame. Ideally, this would be the lens choice for first-time multifocal wearers. An adaptation period is necessary since this would be the first time using a lens that magnifies at the bottom.
Patients who previously wore other types of multifocal lenses are also good candidates for progressive lenses. However, they may have greater difficulty adapting, since they are accustomed to other designs.
Progressive lenses are not all the same. These lenses range in quality and design from standard to super premium with designs that meet specific lifestyles and needs. Progressive lenses have improved greatly over the years with the introduction of digital surfacing. While the cost may be increased with a more premium lens, the ease of use will increase as well.
Progressives, of course, are not the only type of multifocal lens options for a patient. Whether it be a type of lens that the patient is used to, or a specific need that they have, a lined bifocal or trifocal may be the best option. If a patient has become accustomed to wearing a lined lens and they are happy with it, we would recommend staying with that lens design.
Some patients may have certain medical conditions, work needs, or hobbies that would make a lined multifocal a better fit for them as it gives a very distinct area for the patient to look through for their near vision.
The rest of the lens has the distance prescription. These lenses still require some adaptation but may be easier to get accustomed to.
The best way to determine what may work best for you is to sit down with an optician or optometrist and discuss your needs. In many cases, optical offices will offer you the ability to change the type of multifocal lens within a certain time frame. Moving from single vision lenses to multifocals doesn’t have to be a scary experience. It’s far better than fumbling through multiple pairs of glasses for your distance and reading needs. Your local optician or our professionals at Darrell M. Sipe Opticians and Hearing Aids can assist you today!

As seniors age, there are new challenges they are faced with. Two of the biggest challenges are managing their changing healthcare needs and balancing the rising costs of care. Many seniors and their families want to find a solution that enables them to maintain their independence and live comfortably at home. Fortunately, there is an option - Senior LIFE (Living Independence for the Elderly), a state and federally funded Medicare and Medicaid program that is designed to provide comprehensive, long-term care for seniors. With a dedicated team of medical professionals and a wide range of medical and social services, Senior LIFE is an option for seniors and their families to keep their loved ones at home for as long as possible. With a focus on collaboration between healthcare professionals and caregivers, Senior LIFE ensures that seniors’ needs are met holistically, promoting overall well-being and quality of life.
The LIFE Health and Wellness Center is a distinctive feature of Senior LIFE, offering participants a holistic approach to healthcare. At this center, seniors can conveniently meet their doctors and nurses, participate in rehabilitation and therapy programs, dine together, and engage in a variety of social activities.
For seniors who live in the community on Medicaid, there are no costs for services. If you’re not sure if you qualify for Medicaid, please reach out to Senior LIFE 1-877-998-LIFE (5433). They can help you determine if you are eligible for services at no cost to you!

For many seniors in Pennsylvania, Medicaid is a key resource that helps cover the cost of healthcare and long-term care. However, the eligibility process can be complex, and understanding the requirements is essential to ensure access to the benefits you need.
Medicaid, also known as Medical Assistance (MA) in Pennsylvania, is a joint state and federal program designed to provide healthcare coverage to individuals with limited income and resources. While it covers a wide range of services, including long-term care, meeting the eligibility requirements can be challenging.
To qualify, applicants must meet both financial and non-financial criteria. Financial requirements include income and asset limits, which vary depending on marital status and specific Medicaid programs. In addition to financial qualifications, non-financial criteria may apply. For example, seniors seeking long-term care coverage must have a physician certify that they require specialized medical care.
One important factor to be aware of is Pennsylvania’s fiveyear look-back period. When applying for Medicaid, financial transactions from the past five years are reviewed to determine if any assets were transferred for less than fair market value, or if those transfers could have been used for care. If such transfers are found, penalties may be imposed, delaying eligibility for benefits.
Seeking guidance from an attorney familiar with elder law and Medicaid regulations can help streamline the process and ensure that all necessary documentation is submitted correctly.
Medicaid eligibility rules are strict and the application process requires detailed documentation. Planning ahead can help avoid unnecessary stress and financial strain. Some seniors may need to adjust their financial situation to meet Medicaid’s requirements without depleting their savings or losing assets. Legal tools such as irrevocable trusts and asset protection strategies can play a role in ensuring financial security while maintaining eligibility.
Applying for Medicaid can be time-consuming, and mistakes in the application can lead to delays or denials. Seeking guidance from an attorney familiar with elder law and Medicaid regulations can help streamline the process and ensure that all necessary documentation is submitted correctly.
Understanding Medicaid eligibility and planning ahead can make a significant difference in securing healthcare coverage when it is needed most. Whether applying for yourself or assisting a loved one, being informed about the rules and requirements can help ensure a smoother process and better outcomes.
For those unsure of where to start, consulting with an expert in Medicaid planning like an elder law attorney may be beneficial to help navigate the complexities of eligibility and asset protection. With the right approach, seniors can access the care they need while maintaining financial stability.

For many Americans, Social Security provides a financial safety net in the retirement years. Let’s dive into the basics of this vital program and explore how it impacts retirees, workers with disabilities, and family members.
Social Security provides financial support to retirees, workers with qualifying disabilities, survivors of deceased workers, and dependents of beneficiaries. Approximately 180 million people contribute to the system through payroll taxes, and as of September 2023, about 67 million people receive monthly benefits. Most people receiving benefits are retirees and their families, totaling around 52 million people.
Social Security replaces a percentage of your pre-retirement income based on 35 years of your highest earnings. If you start benefits at your full retirement, this percentage ranges from: up to 78% for very low earners, about 42% for medium earners and approximately 28% for maximum earners. At the start of 2024, the average monthly worker’s benefit was $1,907 which includes a 3.2% cost of living adjustment. This adjustment is modestly higher than the average COLA of 2.6% over the past 20 years. Choosing when to start receiving retirement benefits is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Starting your benefits at your full retirement age (FRA), you will receive your
full benefit amount. Starting your benefits before your FRA will result in a reduced benefit amount. If you decide to work beyond your FRA, your benefit will increase from the time you reach FRA, until you start receiving benefits, or until you reach age 70.
Social Security benefits are an important part of your retirement income plan, it was never intended to be the sole source of income in retirement. Many financial advisers recommend aiming for 70% to 80% of pre-retirement income, including Social Security, personal savings, investments, and pensions.
At the start of 2024, the average monthly worker’s benefit was $1,907 which includes a 3.2% cost of living adjustment.
Understanding your benefits is essential for creating a sustainable retirement income plan. Like everything else in life, knowing your rights and understanding your options keeps you in control of the best outcomes. For more detailed information, refer to the official Social Security publication: Understanding the Benefits, No. 05-10024. The official Social Security website is: SSA.gov.

If you’ve ever played the Pennsylvania Lottery, then you’ve probably heard their slogan: Benefits Older Pennsylvanians. Every Day. But have you ever wondered how?
One way is by partially subsidizing Shared Ride services across Pennsylvania. Lebanon Transit is one such operator of Shared Ride, which is a curb-to-curb, reservation-based transportation program servicing all of Lebanon County.
“Shared Ride” means that the service is open to the public but is not a taxi or Uber. The Shared Ride van will pick you up at your curb and transport you to your destination. You can travel to any destination in Lebanon County, including doctors, stores, and friends or family, plus the Hershey Medical Center campus. Since the service is shared there may be other people in the vehicle besides you, or the driver may need to pick up other passengers prior to dropping you off at your destination.
Anyone can utilize Shared Ride services. However, full fare may cost more than $20 per trip. But seniors may qualify for a reduced fare. To qualify, you must be at least 65 years old and supply one of the eligible proofs of age to Lebanon Transit. Your fare is then only $2.50 per trip regardless of the distance you travel. The Lottery pays the rest!
And when you are signed up for Shared Ride you also ride any fixed route bus for free!
To sign-up for Shared Ride in Lebanon County call 717.274.3664. For other counties, visit https://gis. penndot.gov/transitmap/ to find available transit services.

Twilight Wish Foundation is a national nonprofit that grants wishes to deserving, low-income seniors. Twilight Wish was founded in 2003 by Cass Forkin, after a life-changing encounter with a group of elderly women in a local diner. She noticed them counting out their change to pay for their meal and, as a gesture of kindness, paid it for them anonymously. The women, grateful and touched by this generosity, insisted on knowing who paid their bill. Their gratitude for such a simple gesture inspired Cass to found Twilight Wish later that year. Since that day in the diner 22 years ago, Twilight Wish has granted the wishes of nearly 7,000 seniors. The wishes we grant range from simple needs that will improve the quality of life for seniors such as a new mattress or appliance, hearing aids, lift chairs and other accessibility items to larger, “living life to the fullest” wishes like going to a Phillies game, a ride in a Harley sidecar or a 100th birthday party celebration with an Elvis impersonator. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others.
Twilight Wish has granted the wishes of nearly 7,000 seniors.
More Than 25+ chapters nationwide extend the reach to help grant even more wishes through the U.S. appliance, hearing aids, lift chairs and
Granting Wishes, creating lasting memories for recipients, their families, and communities. Dedicated volunteers form the heart of Twilight Wish, spreading joy to those in need.
250+
In order to qualify for a wish, recipients must be 65 or older or be a permanent resident of a nursing facility. Recipients must also have a history of giving back to their community and an annual income of less than 200% of poverty level. For 2025, that number is $31,330. To nominate a senior or donate to a wish, visit our website www. twilightwish.org.

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”
Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)
$1,676 deductible (per benefit period)
It is possible to pay the $1676 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.
Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.
Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.
No coverage outside USA.
No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Most people pay monthly $185 (Premium could be higher based on income)
$257 annual deductible. (this can increase each year)
80/20 after deductible.
Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, wellness & other Medicare approved benefits
Most doctors accept Medicare.
No coverage outside the USA.
No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap
Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.
Guarantee Issue at initial enrollment (Other special enrollment periods may be available)
These plans generally pay the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits
When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered
Can provide benefits outside USA
Plans are available through insurance companies.
Important to add Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties.
Must have Part A & B to enroll.
This article was written by Craig N. Anderson, President of Anderson Benefits, Inc. located in Salt Lake City, Utah. To contact call: 801-363-9575 or craig@andersonbenefits.com A & B are designed for people over age 65 and those with certain disabilities

HOSPICE - Hospices provide individuals facing a terminal illness with care in a private residence or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to provide quality of life and to assist patients to live the last stages of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than curative treatment of the terminal illness.
SERVICES PROVIDED:
RN-REGISTERED NURSE – Assesses patient’s physical needs, develops and coordinates the plan of care, ensures symptom control and management, provides patient/family education as needed
SW-SOCIAL WORKER – Assesses patient and family emotional and social needs, develops a plan of care, and provides counseling and support to meet identified needs, and makes referrals to other providers based on family and patient’s needs
CHAPLAIN – Assesses patient and family spiritual needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, assists with memorial preparations.
VOLUNTEERS – Provides companionship and needed nonmedical services for patients and their families, offers support at time of death and during bereavement.
LEVELS OF CARE:
RO-ROUTINE CARE – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in managing the individual’s disease symptoms. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence or in a healthcare facility.
RE-RESPITE CARE – Provided when the family needs time to rest or go out of town for a short time. Care may be provided in a skilled nursing facility. Hospice is responsible for financial arrangements with the facility.
GIP – GENERAL IN-PATIENT
CARE – Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. This higher level of care is due to symptoms which are out of control and more intensive nursing services are required. The room and board are covered by hospice during this period.
CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs. It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This
level of care is usually provided to the patient at their private residence or in a personal care home or assisted living facility. The criteria for continuous care may include: Severe pain or symptoms which are out of control, psychotic episodes, breakdown of caregiver, imminent death and family unable to cope. Continuous care is typically reserved for crises that require a constant presence by a nurse or care team.
THERAPY SERVICES PROVIDED:
AR-AROMA THERAPY – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in maintaining the individual’s symptom management.
Care is provided at the individual’s private residence, a retirement community, an assisted living, or a skilled nursing facility.
MA-MASSAGE THERAPY – Used as a method for relaxation to alleviate stress, anxiety and pain with a light hands-on approach, as well as providing an alternative to those who can’t take medication or prefer not to. Massage therapy has become essential in hospice care. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.
MU-MUSIC THERAPY – Music
Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.
Continued on page 112
A music therapist creates goals and objectives for their patients and uses music activities and music experiences (listening, composition, improvisation, or playing/singing a familiar song) in order to achieve those goals. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.
P-PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare.
24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice, 24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays.
GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS – Grief is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many hospice companies provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting.

HOME HEALTH – Indicates whether the hospice agency has a sister home health agency that will provide assistance with medically based home health needs such as nursing services, home health aide services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy or speech therapy.
INDIGENT PATIENTS – Does the hospice accept non funded or indigent patients? This is usually on a case by case basis and at the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients.
PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE – Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency.
PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

(ADLs) – Activities involving personal care and mobility such as bathing, dressing, toileting, walking and meal preparation.
AGE RESTRICTIONS – Some communities have a restriction on the youngest age they are allowed to accept. These restrictions vary by community.
(AL) – Typically apartment-style with kitchenettes and private baths. Assisted living services and personal assistance with ADLs are provided. In PA there is a licensure distinction between Assisted Living Residences and Personal Care Homes. An
Assisted Living Residence in PA is “a significant long-term care alternative to allow individuals to age in place… and [to] develop and maintain maximum independence, exercise decision-making and personal choice.” according to PA Code, Ch 2800.
DAY SERVICES – Most providers can elect to provide day/ night services on a short or long term basis. Rates typically include a place to rest, one or two meals and snacks and activities for the day.
COMMUNITY (“CCRC”) – There are many different types of CCRCs. There are Pay for Fee Communities (Type
C), Life Plan Communities (Type A) and even some rental models (Type D) inside CCRCs, but the unifying factor Is that they provide all levels of care - Independent Living, Assisted Living/Personal Care, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. Many offer many additional amenities, such as Rehabilitation Facilities, meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Amenities are usually abundant; formal libraries, computer stations, swimming pools, gardens, and other social gathering spaces.
BENEVOLENT PROGRAM – A program created to maintain a resident’s lifestyle when they run out of resources through no fault of their own.
(TYPE C) – Includes housing, residential services and offers different levels of healthcare, but not at the same monthly cost. Where you are on the continuum of care dictates what you pay for the monthly fee. There is typically an up-front fee that varies based on the type residential amenities and other factors.
A) – Includes housing, residential services and unlimited use of healthcare services with little or no increase in monthly fees. Your monthly fees are not dependent on the level of care that you need, which
is why a Life Care Community may charge a larger up-front fee, as the Life Care Community is absorbing the risk on the resident’s level of care needed.
RENTAL AGREEMENT (TYPE D)
- Typically a small amount of rental properties are available which are not subsidized. Does not participate in the buy-in fee, nor has access to the continuum of care benefits.
INDEPENDENT LIVING COMMUNITIES – Apartments and communities for adults 55+.
INSTRUMENTAL ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING (IADLs) – Activities involving more complex functioning
such as grocery shopping, writing checks, housework, cooking, traveling, and managing money.
INTERMEDIATE CARE – 24-hour inpatient care for residents who need licensed nursing supervision and supportive care, but do not require continuous nursing care. Residents may receive full assistance with ADL’s and transfers. Residents receive medications from a nurse following a doctor’s orders and may receive outpatient rehab services.
MEMORY CARE RESIDENCES (MC) – Licensed Assisted Living or Personal Care Homes that specialize in delivering care to patients with

DEPENDENT ON LEVELS OF CARE – Flexible levels of service geared to accommodate different needs over time. Rates may vary depending on the changing levels of care while one maintains the same physical residence.
– Any provider of IL, PCH, AL, MC or SNF care can elect to provide fully furnished accommodations to a person for a short period of time, if space is available.
SECURED UNIT – A secured unit dedicated to Alzheimer’s/Dementia residents to prevent wandering outside the community without supervision.
Luthercare complies with applicable Federal civil rights laws and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, or sex.
–

SKILLED CARE – 24 hour licensed nursing services. Patients may receive rehab services either inpatient or outpatient and may be fully dependent for ADL’s.
SKILLED NURSING FACILITY (SNF) – Provides 24/7 care for residents and offers full assistance with ADL’s. Daily rates typically include a furnished bedroom, private or shared bath, meals, activities, transportation, phone service, cable TV and all personal/ nursing care.
TRACH CARE – Refers to care administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy, a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea), to bypass an obstruction, allow air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions.
VENTILATOR – Moves breathable air into and out of the lungs, to provide the mechanism of breathing for a patient who is physically unable.
WANDERGUARD – Offered at some facilities. A resident with memory loss or confusion wears a small discrete pendant. Each external door in the care home is fitted with a radio detector which detects and alarms when a pendant moves near an exit.
A pet-friendly environment is important for any pet owner, especially when they are choosing a senior living community to enjoy their retirement. Pets provide seniors with companionship, comfort, and entertainment. Many owners view their dogs and cats not just as pets, but cherished family members. A compassionate senior living community will understand and respect how important a pet is to the emotional well-being and happiness of its residents.
Here are three things to consider when selecting a pet-friendly senior community to ensure it will be a comfortable and welcoming place for everyone.
The first thing to do is read the community’s pet policies and ask questions upfront. Specific policies can vary between communities, so it’s important to understand what is allowed and what isn’t. Common restrictions include the type of pet allowed (such as only cats or small dogs), size or weight limits, and the number of pets permitted per resident. The community may also require that the pet is housebroken, leash-trained, and up to date on all shots and vaccines.
A truly pet-friendly community will offer amenities and services that cater to the needs of both you and your pet. Look for features such as designated pet areas, walking paths, and green space where pets can exercise and socialize. Knowing that your community supports a pet-friendly lifestyle can provide peace of mind and enhance the overall living experience for both you and your pet.
PHOTOS BY HARMONY SENIOR SERVICES
It is important to observe the overall attitude and culture of the community towards pets. A community that genuinely welcomes pets will have a positive atmosphere where pet owners feel comfortable and supported. Pay attention to how the staff and residents react to pets. Do they seem to enjoy having pets around? Are there activities for the residents that include pets? Are pets outside enjoying the fresh air with their owners?
Choosing a pet-friendly senior living community involves more than just finding a place that allows pets. Understanding the community’s pet policies, services, and enthusiasm towards pets are important steps to making sure both you and your pet will thrive.

5. Downsizing and Estate Liquidation Expertise:
Senior relocations often require letting go of a lifetime of belongings. SMM companies should offer thoughtful guidance on what to keep, sell, donate, or discard, while respecting emotional and family dynamics.
6. Professionalism and Reliability:
SMM staff should demonstrate high ethical standards, punctuality, cleanliness, and courtesy—hallmarks of a reputable company.
At Sterling Senior Life Solutions, we embody all of these qualities. We don’t outsource services—every team member is a direct part of our Sterling family.
From your first call with Karen, our caring concierge, to your consultation with Kathy, who brings 35 years of senior living expertise, and your move managed by Nathanial’s dedicated team, we ensure every step is handled with compassion and professionalism. We’re not just moving belongings—we’re honoring lives. At Sterling, we’re proud to provide seniors and their families with an experience worth sharing.

How to know when it’s the right time for personal care
Your loved one may be doing just fine now, but life can happen unexpectedly. A move to personal care is a life-changing decision that feels difficult and overwhelming to make, but the lifestyle benefits are exponential, especially when a move occurs early on.
These signs can be your cue that it’s time for an enhanced level of care: Declining health. How does your loved one look? Is their medicine being taken correctly? Do they have healthy eating habits? Are they struggling with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, and toileting?
A little help goes a long way! With 24-hour personal care services, your loved one can receive as little or as much assistance needed. Personal care communities also serve nutritious meals daily, with most places including light housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and rehabilitation services in the rental fee.
Safety concerns. A fall-related injury could be detrimental to an aging relative’s health; even a fear of falling can keep them homebound. Personal care communities are designed with mobility challenges in mind. Important safety features include wellness checks, grab bars, non-slip flooring, and emergency call systems.
Limited social activities. For some family caregivers who maintain two households, there is little time to provide daily socialization. Fewer enrichment opportunities can cause feelings of isolation and loneliness. Through social, recreational, and educational programs, personal care communities can nurture their physical, mental, and spiritual needs.
You’re exhausted. Caregiving is a demanding job and takes a physical, mental, and emotional toll on the care partner. There is no shame in reaching out for help. Personal care communities offer peace of mind because staff members are available 24/7 to manage your loved one’s varying care needs.
Many older adults strongly desire to maintain their health and independence as they age. To help your loved one see the advantages of a personal care lifestyle, include them in conversations and when touring a community that could be the right fit for them. You may also feel reassured talking with senior care experts. The management care team at Senior Commons at Powder Mill has over 50 years of combined experience in senior care, and our established partnerships with surrounding health care providers allow us to be an excellent resource for families.
But the best advice — don’t wait for a crisis to occur. An early transition into personal care lets your loved one adjust to new surroundings and form relationships with staff and residents.

Pennsylvania stands at a crossroads. As the affordable housing crisis deepens, one of our most vulnerable populations—low-income seniors and adults with disabilities—is being left behind. Personal Care Homes (PCHs) and Assisted Living Residences (ALRs) serve as lifelines for individuals who need help with daily activities but do not require nursing-level care. Yet these homes, especially those accepting the state’s SSI Supplement, are rapidly disappearing.
The SSI Supplement—a combination of federal and state funds—offers just $51 per day to house and care for individuals. This amount has only marginally increased since 2006, despite inflation surpassing 50% during the same period. By comparison, $51 wouldn’t even cover a day’s pet boarding. Unsurprisingly, the number of PCHs accepting this supplement has plummeted by over 60%
since 2008. Only about 260 homes in Pennsylvania now primarily serve SSI residents, a stark decline from the 894 that existed almost two decades ago.
This is not just a housing issue—it’s a healthcare crisis. Without available PCHs, low-income individuals often remain in hospitals far beyond medical necessity, unable to secure a “safe discharge.” Each unnecessary hospital day costs roughly $2,500. Multiply that by hundreds of patients stuck for hundreds of days, and the strain on our healthcare systems—and wallets—is unsustainable.
ALPHA (Alliance for Low-Income Personal Care Home Advancement), founded in 2016, is working to change this. Born out of urgent need, ALPHA supports PCHs through advocacy, resource acquisition, as well as business coaching/training, best practices, resident activities, improved operational strategies, grants, and community volunteerism.

Thanks in part to our efforts, Pennsylvania awarded a $20 million increase to SSI providers in 2023—the first state-level funding boost in nearly two decades. Still, this is only a start.
We must act now to preserve and expand the network of PCHs that provide dignified, cost-effective care to those most in need. Whether through increased funding, community partnerships, or public awareness, every Pennsylvanian has a role to play.
You can help. Join ALPHA in advocating for change. Volunteer just two hours a month. Share your skills. Together, we can ensure that no one is forced to live without the care they need, just because they are underprivileged. Visit www.ALPHA-Homes.org or contact us at Info@ALPHA-Homes.org to get involved.
