DEAR READERS,

For over two decades, I have been honored and proud to serve the seniors of our community. As Publisher of this resource guide, I can assure you that the entire Seniors Blue Book team works tirelessly to provide you with an abundance of resources in the senior realm.

This edition’s Letter From The Publisher is more personal than normal. You see, I lost both of my parents in the past year and a half. It is fair to say I ‘walked the walk and talked the talk’ as my sisters and I navigated the underbelly of caretaking an elderly loved one (times two).

Mom was struggling for nearly a decade and Dad was her caretaker. Dad was a proud Army veteran and a doting husband who didn’t like to ask (or even accept) help as he thought he could fully care for Mom on his own. But, like many caretakers before him, he didn’t truly understand it was to his detriment to try to do it ‘all’. After MANY hospital visits for them both, months of rehabilitation between them, and legal/estate matters, I was reminded

of the inherent value of having access to resources in the palm of my hand. There were setbacks, pitfalls and mistakes made along the way. There were questions beyond questions that came to light as we served as advocates for our folks.

Sadly, a bad fall brought on brain surgery for Dad that eventually incapacitated him. After his passing, Mom quickly followed about 18 months later after succumbing to a surprise diagnosis of Stage IV cancer. Gratefully, they are back together again – as it should be.

Whether you’re a caregiver seeking support, a senior looking for helpful information or a professional dedicated to serving our beloved senior community, the Seniors Blue Book is here to be a beacon of support and knowledge. Share this book with your friends and neighbors. Our books are always FREE, thanks to our amazing advertising partners! Thank you again for your support of the work we do at the Seniors Blue Book – it is sincerely a privilege to serve our senior healthcare community!

Sincerely Yours,

Publisher

Revocable and Irrevocable Trust Planning

Trusts keep your wishes private, allow your family to bypass probate, safeguard beneficiaries, and provide detailed instructions on how to handle assets after your passing.

Good trust planning can help with estate taxes, protection for family members with disabilities or other concerns, and provide safeguards if the surviving spouse remarries.

A revocable trust allows the creator to change or revoke the trust and manage trust assets themselves. An irrevocable trust allows you to name a trustee to manage trust assets for you. Someone else controlling your trust assets may be scary, but know they are bound as a fiduciary to act in your best interests

with significant consequences if a trustee mishandles assets.

When considering any type of trust, consult with a knowledgeable attorney to ensure your trust works for you and does exactly what you want and need the trust to do.

Final note: it is critical you properly fund your trust. If you have questions about funding your trust, or encounter problems, reach out to your attorney, financial advisor/planner, or brokerage firm. ~

Estate Planning: Act Before It’s Too Late

Estate planning isn’t just for the elderly or terminally ill, it’s for everyone. While many people put off this important task, life’s unpredictability makes early planning essential.

Without an estate plan, incapacity could force your loved ones through costly guardianship proceedings. Dying intestate might give your assets to unintended beneficiaries. Estate planning is about legacy and peace of mind, ensuring someone you trust will manage your affairs if needed. It’s a love letter to your family.

Comprehensive planning addresses care for your entire family, including pets, stepchildren, and grandchildren. It prepares for long-term care costs through insurance or Medicaid

planning. Having these essential conversations helps your representatives understand your wishes when difficult decisions arise.

A complete estate plan includes wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and living wills. It creates a roadmap for both end-of-life care and asset distribution after death.

Creating your estate plan now means sparing your family difficult decisions while grieving, giving everyone peace of mind. Don’t wait until it’s too late. ~

Staying Steady: Fall Prevention Strategies for Older Adults

A simple accident, like tripping on a rug or slipping on a patch of ice, can change your life.

Every year, more than one in four adults 65 years or older experience a fall contributing to over three million emergency department visits across the country.1 In 2023, Good Samaritan Hospital treated 787 trauma patients due to fall-related injuries, making falls the number one trauma injury seen in Good Samaritan’s Emergency Department. Simply stated, the risk of falling and fall-related problems increases as we age.

Why do falls happen?

Falls can result from a range of personal and environmental factors.

Hazards like dimly lit rooms, steep stairs, and hard-to-reach shelves or storage areas present tripping risks. Additionally, as we age, changes in our vision, hearing, and overall health can raise the risk of falls.

How to prevent falls

Fall prevention is about identifying and mitigating as many risk factors for falling as possible. Take some time to do an inventory of your home and your physical health to see if there are any risks present. Once you’ve identified potential risk factors, you can take steps to address them.

n Remove home hazards. Remove clutter and items on the floor and

in areas where you walk. Secure electrical cords so they don’t block walkways, and secure or remove any area rugs that bunch or slip.

n Make home modifications. Install grab bars near the toilet and in your shower, install handrails along your stairs, have lightbulbs replaced or install new lights in dark hallways and rooms, and use non-slip mats in your shower or bathtub.

n Stay active. Regular physical activity and exercise keeps your muscles strong, prevents bone loss, and can improve your balance. Walking, water workouts, or Tai Chi are great activities that improve strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Be sure to consult your

physician before beginning any new exercise program.

Taking care of your overall health and acknowledging your risk factors for falling is extremely important as we age. If you’re not sure where to start, schedule time with your primary care physician to discuss a plan for you or your loved one to keep you healthy, happy, and safe in your home and community. ~

65! Now What?

It is the wish of all who enter the workforce to retire one day.

Most of us do retire but at different ages depending on many factors. Some want to work for as long as possible and in some cases forget to review the benefits only available after the age of 65. It is here where mistakes are made if you do not do any research.

The earliest you can draw Social Security benefits is 62. If you are unable to work and are disabled prior to age 62 the Social Security Administration provides benefits that can support you until retirement. Most people are required to apply for Medicare at 65 or after 24 months

of Social Security disability with the exception of those with other creditable coverage. The reason for this is that the Federal Government and the State Government share the load for healthcare and support for those retiring or disabled. If you do not become aware of these guidelines you could risk being penalized. This is usually a monetary penalty applied to your premiums once you finally get your benefits in place. Get the information you need today! Call us for an appointment. ~

A, B & Medigap Plans)

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”

Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance

Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)

$1,676 deductible (per benefit period)

It is possible to pay the $1676 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.

Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.

Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.

No coverage outside USA.

No out-of-pocket maximum.

Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

Medicare Part B Medical Insurance

Most people pay monthly $185 (Premium could be higher based on income)

$257 annual deductible. (this can increase each year)

80/20 after deductible.

REHABILITATION HOSPITALS

Rehabilitation Hospitals, sometimes referred to as Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals, provide intensive rehab to patients who are generally medically stable but need help to recover from injury or other medical conditions. They can be found within a hospital or in a free-standing building. Rehabilitation hospitals were created to provide services less costly on a per diem basis than general hospitals but provide a high level of professional therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapies. Rehabilitation Hospitals must offer a minimum number of physician visits, increased daily rehab hours (3 hours/day, 5 days/week of PT, OT, and/or Speech), and interdisciplinary services including increased RN oversight and nursing hours per day.

The Benefits of a Structured, Intensive Rehabilitation Program

Inpatient rehabilitation hospitals offer numerous benefits for individuals recovering from serious injuries, surgeries, and illnesses.

One of the primary advantages is the structured and intensive care provided in a controlled environment, where patients have access to a comprehensive team of medical professionals. This includes physical, occupational, and speech therapists, along with physicians, nurses and case managers, all working together to create a tailored recovery plan. The 24-hour supervision that patients receive ensures that immediate assistance is available if complica-

tions arise. Additionally, inpatient rehab offers an opportunity to focus solely on rehabilitation, free from the distractions and stresses of home life. Patients can engage in daily intensive therapy sessions that are designed to improve strength, mobility, and overall function which results in faster and more significant progress compared to recovery in nursing home facilities and outpatient rehab. Inpatient rehab hospitals also provide specialized equipment and therapy techniques that are not available at home or any other setting, further enhancing the potential for recovery.

What Comes Next? Demystifying Long-Term Care and

A hospital stay—whether planned or unexpected—often brings the difficult question: What happens next?

For many older adults and their families, the discharge process can feel rushed, confusing, and full of unexplained terms. “Skilled nursing,” “rehab,” “long-term care,” and “transitional care” can all start to sound the same. But each serves a different purpose—and knowing the difference can make a huge impact on recovery and peace of mind.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Needs

If you, or your loved one is not quite ready to return home safely, short-term skilled nursing or rehabilitation may be recommended. This doesn’t mean anyone is being “put in a home.” It means a person needs time to regain strength and independence with the support of 24/7 nursing care and therapy. The goal is to help the individual recover enough to return to the community—whether that’s home, assisted living, or another level of support.

On the other hand, long-term care is often appropriate when a person’s needs are ongoing, chronic, or unlikely to improve significantly. This can be a tough pill to swallow for an individual, or families—but it can also bring relief. Good long-term care communities provide safety, structure, medical oversight, and social connection. The best ones strive

to feel as home-like as possible.

What Is Transitional Care?

Transitional care bridges the gap between hospital and home and can happen in a variety of settings. Think of it as a safety net during recovery. These services can happen in a skilled nursing facility, at home with visiting nurses and therapists, or in a specialized hospital-based unit. Transitional care focuses on reducing avoidable readmissions and helping people meet recovery goals like walking, dressing, or managing medications independently again.

Let Go of the Stigma

It’s okay to have fears about nursing homes—we’ve all heard stories or carry memories of what they used to be. But the landscape has

Independence at Home Has Never Been Easier

With higher mortgage interest rates and the increasing cost of assisted living making moving more expensive, there’s never been a better time to make your existing home more accessible.

Staying safe at home as mobility decreases centers around equipment and/or remodeling.

Equipment such as grab bars, toilet support rails, and additional handrails are easy first steps to make a house more accessible. Wheelchair ramps, stairlifts, and vertical lifts allow for increased access. Elevators, automatic door

openers, and overhead patient lifts are available for those with more limited mobility.

Remodeling for better accessibility can begin with simpler projects such as non-slip flooring, improved lighting, lever-stye door handles, adjustable showerheads, and step through tub cut outs. Tub-to- shower conversions, toilet risers, and lowrise easy steps remove even more household obstacles. Full bathroom remodels, door widenings, and smart home technology can make most homes completely accessible.

A Clearer Future: Cataract Surgery with Light Adjustable Lenses

Cataract surgery has come a long way, and one of the most exciting advancements is the use of Light Adjustable Lenses (LALs).

These innovative lenses offer a level of personalization that was previously impossible with traditional intraocular lenses.

During standard cataract surgery, a clouded natural lens is replaced with a clear artificial one. With LALs, the process does not stop there. Once the eye has healed patients undergo a series of painless, non-invasive light treatments. These treatments adjust the lens power inside the eye, allowing for fine-tuned vision correction tailored specifically to the patient’s needs.

This means patients can achieve more precise results and potentially reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. It is especially beneficial for those who have had previous refractive surgery or who want the best possible visual outcome.

Light Adjustable Lenses are truly redefining cataract surgery—offering not just restored sight, but custom clarity for life.

Understanding Senior Care In-Home Options

Choosing the right care option for seniors can be overwhelming. This guide breaks down the differences between different in-home options, helping you make informed decisions for your cllients, patients or loved ones. For more information please visit seniorsbluebook.com.

NON MEDICAL HOME CARE

What is it:

Who is it for:

In-home assistance focusing on personal care and daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation and companionship. Services are non-medical in nature and are designed to help seniors maintain independence in their home.

Best suited for seniors who need help with everyday tasks but do not require medical supervision or treatment.

HOME HEALTH CARE

What is it:

Who is it for:

Medical care at home provided by licensed healthcare professionals, including aides, nurses, physical therapist, and occupational therapist. Services may include wound care, administering medications, managing chronic conditions, and post surgery care and therapy. A doctor must refer a patient for home health care.

Appropriate for seniors who need medical treatment or rehabilitation at home.

HOSPICE CARE

What is it:

Who is it for:

Medical care at home for patients with a lifelimiting illness. Hospice emphasizes palliative care rather than curative treatment. An interdisciplinary team (Doctor, Nurse, Aide, Social Worker, Chaplain and Volunteer Services) works together to help the patient, caregiver, and family.

Suitable for patient with a terminal illness. A doctor must refer a patient for hospice care.

Combating Loneliness, Isolation, and Depression in Seniors: Choosing the Right Home Care Agency

As the senior population grows, more older adults are choosing to remain in their homes rather than move to assisted living or nursing facilities. While aging in place offers many benefits, it also presents challenges, most notably, the risk of loneliness, isolation, and depression.

The

Silent Epidemic of Senior Loneliness

Studies show that social isolation and loneliness can have devastating effects on seniors’ physical and mental health. Issues could include cognitive decline, heart disease, stroke, and even premature death. Yet, despite these risks, many home care providers fail to address the emotional and psychological needs of their clients. Instead, they focus solely on completing a checklist of duties without considering the person behind the care plan. An effective care approach must nurture not just the body but also the mind and spirit.

Choosing the Right Home Care Agency

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing an Agency:

n Is there a program to combat Loneliness, Isolation, and Depression?

n Does the agency serve as a community resource finding additional services?

n Do they volunteer or give back?

n Do they have Certified Senior Advisors® on staff?

n Do they conduct home safety and fall prevention evaluations?

n Does the agency provide evidence-based transitional care?

n Will they be your advocate/ advisor during hospitalization or rehab? Even if you don’t need a caregiver yet?

More Than Just Home Care

Look for a Home Care company that strives to be more; a Life Enrichment Company, one that EMPOWERS people to experience the full joy of living by providing holistic, personalized care that meets each individual’s needs.~

Finding Joy and Rest in the Journey of Memory Care

Caring for a loved one with memory loss is one of the most challenging—and meaningful—roles a person can undertake. It calls for deep compassion, resilience, and an intentional approach to preserving your own well-being.

“Caregiving often calls us to lean into love we didn’t know possible.” — Tia Walker, author of The Inspired Caregiver

Embrace the Moments That Remain

respite care, or caregiver support groups. The Family Caregiver Alliance recommends planning breaks weekly: “Regular respite is essential to prevent burnout and maintain the quality of care.”

Create Pockets of Rest

Memory loss doesn’t erase emotion. A gentle touch, a smile, or a familiar song can bridge what’s forgotten. These small moments can offer bursts of joy. “Even when my mother didn’t know my name, she still lit up when I played her favorite piano piece,” shares Maria R., caregiver and retired music teacher.

Practice Gentle Routines

Routine creates security—for both caregiver and loved one. Try rituals like a shared breakfast, garden walks, or reading poetry aloud. “Predictable patterns reduce stress and make caregiving feel less overwhelming,” says the Alzheimer’s Association.

Accept Help Without Guilt

Caregivers need support too. Utilize adult day programs, home

Even five minutes of stillness matters. Try deep breathing, stretching, or simply sitting with a cup of tea. Rest can be active or passive— what matters is carving it out.

Reconnect with Purpose

Your role as a caregiver is sacred. When you feel drained, remind yourself of your purpose: offering dignity, presence, and love.

Preparing for Home Care: A Guide to a Smooth Transition

As our loved ones age, the need for extra support often becomes essential. Senior home care provides a compassionate solution, enabling seniors to maintain their independence while receiving necessary assistance.

Preparing for this transition is crucial for ensuring comfort and success.

First, start with an open and honest conversation with your loved one. Discuss their needs, concerns, and preferences. Include them in decision-making to ensure they feel respected and valued.

Next, determine which activities they need assistance with, such as help with daily activities like medication reminders, bathing and companionship. Ensure the company you choose is prepared

to meet those needs.

Choosing the right provider is essential. Research agencies with a solid reputation, and thoroughly screened and experienced caregivers. Request references and read online reviews.

Finally, prepare the home by organizing essential items and creating a safe environment. Clear pathways, remove hazards, and ensure accessibility.

Taking these steps can ease the transition, fostering trust and peace of mind for everyone involved. ~

Celebrating Seven Years of Advocacy: How COPRA Has Made a Landmark Impact on Senior Rights in Colorado!

Over the past seven years, the Colorado Placement Referral Alliance (COPRA) has transformed from a grassroots coalition into a leading advocate for ethical senior placement and advocacy.

Our dedication to transparency, accountability, and compassion led to a historic achievement: the passage of the Family Choice Act, the first law of its kind in the U.S. We have worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of seniors and protect their rights, making significant progress for older adults in Colorado.

A Mission Rooted in Integrity and Care

COPRA was founded to improve standards in senior placement and referral services. It has worked diligently to promote ethical practices, ensuring that families and seniors receive clear and unbiased guidance when making decisions about senior living options. Over the years, COPRA has:

n Educated families about their rights and the senior placement process.

n Created a Code of Ethics and Best Practices for professionals in placement.

n Provided training and certification for ethical placement agents.

n Established a network of trusted professionals across Colorado to promote collaboration.

n Advocated for laws at the state level that prioritize the voices of seniors and their loved ones.

The Family Choice Act: A Historic Win for Seniors

In a significant milestone, COPRA played a crucial role in drafting and advocating for the Family Choice Act. This legislation was passed by the Colorado legislature and signed into law, making Colorado the first state in the nation to acknowledge and protect a family’s right

Eligible participants must meet specific criteria, including being a Colorado resident, requiring assistance due to a disability, and meeting income and resource limits. Ser-

vices are tailored to each individual’s needs and are delivered by trained caregivers, who may be family members or professional aides.

IHSS is an essential resource for people with disabilities or the elderly, enhancing their quality of life by promoting independence while providing necessary care. It also alleviates the financial burden of long-term institutional care, offering a more cost-effective and personalized solution for those in need. ~

changed. Many communities now offer person-centered care, resident choice, and specialized services that weren’t available a decade ago. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or visit ahead of time. You’re not just choosing a facility—you’re choosing a team of people to help your loved one heal and thrive.

Be an Advocate, Be a Partner

Families play a key role in a successful transition. Share what you know: their daily routines, favorite foods, how they like their coffee, what brings them comfort. A small detail shared with staff can make a big difference in how someone

feels on their first day. And don’t be afraid to ask: What’s the plan? What are the goals? Who do I talk to if something changes? Communication is key.

Whether you or your loved one is staying for a few weeks or is beginning a longer chapter, knowing what to expect—and who to lean on—can turn a time of uncertainty into a time of hope. ~

A Thank You to Our Supporters

Senior Housing Definitions continued from page 79

This legislation establishes a national precedent and has already attracted interest from other states wanting to replicate Colorado’s model for senior advocacy.

Looking Ahead

With the Family Choice Act now enacted, COPRA’s mission persists. The organization is broadening its initiatives to:

n Provide ongoing education to professionals and the public.

n Ensure enforcement of the new law through partnerships with state agencies.

n Support ethical agents and referral services that are dedicated to transparency.

n Advocate for further protections and resources for seniors and } their caregivers.

This milestone would not have been possible without the collective efforts of COPRA’s dedicated members, community partners, legislators, and—most importantly— the families and seniors who shared their stories and advocated for their rights.

As we reflect on the past seven years, COPRA is committed to creating a future where every senior and their family can navigate the path to care with confidence, dignity, and freedom of choice. We remain dedicated to ensuring that all seniors and their families have the support they need to approach care with assurance and respect.

If you would like to work with a local CoPRA placement agent, please contact denver@npralliance. org or call 720-837-6306 ~

Proper Food Consumption is Essential for Memory Care Residents

Eating good nutritious meals consistently is critical in the care of a resident with memory care challenges.

It is so important to help that individual to have a dietary routine that allows them to stay healthy, active, happy and enjoy their daily experience. Residents with memory care challenges are like intricate puzzles that require observation, trial and error and patience to help figure out. Once you figure them out and gain their trust you can really maximize their enjoyment of food and drink.

It can be an enjoyable experience each day for those residents. Many simple preventable ailments include Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) and Constipation. These simple ailments can cause major confusion, pain, medication challenges, and end up requiring a trip to the hospital and sometimes even worse.

Residential Memory Care Homes can offer a huge advantage:

n the kitchen is adjacent to the dining tables where the residents can smell the food being cooked.

n meals can easily be customized for that individual because the care staff is right there

n food can be more easily managed by the residents that may be prone to choking, staff can remind them to chew and swallow before taking the next bite and ensure there are

small cut-up pieces or add more gravy or sauce to help moisten food or even puree food when called for.

There can also be a caregiver helping the resident to eat or providing a special utensil for easier management of the food, or a special color plate making it easier to see the food due to the resulting contrast that a resident with macular degeneration may need. Providing a plate with separation on the plate so the resident can distinguish the meat from the potatoes from the vegetable on his plate, allowing him to enjoy the taste of that item.

In a large Memory Care Assisted

Living often residents are brought to a large dining room with many tables and served a plate of food brought from a distant kitchen. It does not always work very well. Many residents don’t really understand their surroundings, there could be too much stimulation, there might not be any connection to the food. (They miss out on smelling it being cooked or baked for the past hour or two.) They may not even realize it is time for them to eat. The staff does not have enough time to assist those residents that need help. This is not an atmosphere that helps them eat better, often the food gets cold

Navigating Aging

Aging is often viewed as an inevitable decline, but what if we reframe it as an adventurous journey? Like a seasoned traveler, navigating the map of aging requires preparation, curiosity, and the ability to adapt.

Just as a good traveler studies maps before embarking on a trip, we can approach aging intentionally, understanding the key landmarks of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Prioritizing health through proper breathing, healthy eating and drinking, regular exercise, quality sleep, and “right thinking” lays a strong foundation.

keep moving forward by embracing change and seeking solutions— whether through medical advancements, mindfulness, or support networks.

One challenge, for instance, is technology with all its blessings and curses. We may struggle with technology due to unfamiliarity, rapidly changing devices, or fear of making mistakes. To overcome this, stepby-step guidance, regular practice, embracing learning opportunities, building confidence, and improving digital literacy will help limit anxiety, confusion, and getting upset.

A backpack filled with companions and social connections is vital as we age, providing emotional support, reducing stress, and improving cognitive health. Staying engaged through relationships, whether through friendships, family, or community groups, enhances the quality of our experience. Share your story, knowledge and wisdom, humor, humility, and heart for a less rocky and unhappy trip. Scientific studies show that a positive attitude toward aging can add years to life and improve overall well-being. Instead of packing regrets, carry appreciation. Instead of fear, carry curiosity.

Every map has unexpected twists. Health and life challenges, loss, or shifting roles can be roadblocks, but adaptability is key. We can

Aging can be a joyous time of appreciation, wisdom, and personal growth. Instead of racing toward the future, why not slow down and savor the view? Engaging in creative pursuits, lifelong learning, or spiritual exploration enriches the journey.

Aging isn’t about reaching an endpoint—it’s about making the most of the trip. By navigating with intention, maintaining meaningful relationships, and embracing change, we transform aging from a challenge into an adventure. Grab your maps, pack light, and enjoy the ride! ~

" A Lovely Place for Lovely People"

Caregiving Burnout

“Why can’t I do this? I really thought I could take care of my spouse/ parent to the end of their life. I’m not only disappointed in myself; I also feel like a failure. But I’m so exhausted and depressed I can’t hardly get through the day. I have lost hope. I don’t know what to do.”

As a Senior Placement Company, these are the kind of thoughts and feelings we hear from caregivers on a regular basis. Often those who have little to no caregiving experience think caregiving for a loved one declining in mental or physical health shouldn’t be all that hard. Demanding yes, but doable; however, experience with caregiving will reveal otherwise. I’ve had to look a caregiver in their eyes and tell them directly, “You can’t get there from here.” What am I saying? You’ll not make it alone to the end. You’ll burnout before your loved one either passes or moves to a Senior Care Community.

So then we have to talk about guilt and fear. The feelings of failure and the fear of their loved ones future well-being while caregiving becomes overwhelming. I was shocked to learn that statistics tell us that care-giver’s burnout and/ or health decline often supersedes

the death of the one they’re caring for. As hard as it is to face the fact that help is needed; it must be done much sooner rather than later. I’ve NEVER heard a caregiver say, “I should have waited to find help or placement for my loved one.”

Families need to understand that caring for loved ones as they decline will eventually require help from others/ communities in approximately 70% of the population. Reaching out to a Senior Placement Company to find the “right fit” for their loved one sooner rather than later is far better than waiting for an emergency hospitalization to become the precipitating event for much needed care-giving. Planning ahead is essential for such needs rather than surrendering to guilt and fear and doing nothing. Placement services are FREE! Contact one soon and plan for a future with your loved one without the overwhelming burden of being the sole caregiver and experiencing burnout. ~

before they do start to eat and it ends up getting thrown away. It is not unusual for these residents to lose weight, struggle with the lack of good nutrition and begin a decline. The poor nutrition can lead to more UTIs and more falls or other body related issues. ~

Talem

Until he was 70, Tommie was a cowboy and loved to herd cattle on horseback on his South Dakota Ranch. Tommie suffered a severe heart attack and his dementia quickly progressed.

Tommie’s daughter, Cindy, moved both her parents to Colorado so that she could visit more often. She placed them in a large assisted living facility memory care unit. Tommie’s wife, Dorothy, passed away 7 months after moving to Colorado. Tommie declined quickly in that environment because he wasn’t eating and wandered a lot. Cindy was unable to work because of her daily visits to her father. She made sure that he would eat and was safe. That experience took a toll on Cindy, her husband, and two young children.

They found Jaxpointe at Flower Ct. and moved Tommie two and a half years ago. It is the perfect environment for Tommie to call home for the rest of his life. The backyard walking path enables Tommie to enjoy nature and walk around. After placing Tommie at Jaxpointe, Cindy and her family went on their first family vacation in four years because they were so comforted by the care that he was receiving.

These days, Tommie is doing great. Daily he dons his western shirt, suspenders, jeans and most of the time, his cowboy hat. He will greet you when you come into Jaxpointe, and always tries to join in on conversations. He goes out in the backyard daily to walk or will “try to find his cattle or check on his hay crops”. He is very happy and enjoys every day. There are times that he doesn’t remember family members or their names, but he is thriving in the person that he has become with dementia.
