TThe GrandFriends Adult Day Program, located at the Via Health, Fitness, and Enrichment Center, has provided a safe and engaging environment for adults living with dementia for the past 30 years.
Our mission is to offer older adults who need supervision and daily care with opportunities to stay mentally and physically healthy. Participation in the program can often delay or prevent the need for placement in a nursing home.
Program Expansion and Grant Support
In August 2024, Via was one of 21 recipients selected to receive grant funding from the Alzheimer’s Association Center for Dementia Respite Innovation (CDRI). This funding has allowed us to:
This project is supported by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $6,607,011 with 75 percent funded by ACL/HHS and $1,620,872 with 25 percent funded by non-government source(s). The contents are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor an endorsement, by ACL/HHS, or the U.S. Government.
Our program recruits and trains volunteers to provide light housekeeping services for lower income seniors who are 60 and older. Assistance with housekeeping is an essential support for independence for seniors, and can reduce caregiver burden. Our goal is to improve quality of life, health and mental well-being, and help maintain independent living. Seniors want to age in place, remaining in their own home.
Flexible scheduling Gift card to offset travel and incidental costs
If you are 18+, provide housekeeping as gig work, just love to clean, or are looking for a meaningful way to volunteer individually or as a community service group, Silver Sweepers is for you! Benefits of volunteering include: A free background check Orientation and training
The opportunity to obtain an industry House Cleaner Certification and learn proper housekeeping techniques to help start/expand your own cleaning business.

So many changes going on in the government right now. This one may have slid by you, but we all must immediately set up an online account for Social Security. By April 14, 2025.
Is this for real or a scam? Yes, it is real. Unless you want to make a trip to your social security office for everything. How is the best way to do this?
You may be totally digital and able to skip this article entirely BUT what about your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, children or clients? Are all of them as tech savvy? If not, then it would be a great service to help them navigate this step.
trusted has a way to access it.
Many seniors are either unable to accomplish this or are deeply suspicious of the process. Either way, seek professional assistance. That’s right, ask your brightest grandchild! No, ask your tax professional, lawyer, case manager, or another trusted professional to assist you. You need to make sure not only that it is set up correctly and properly secured but also that someone else who is
First, you must have or get an email address. If you do not have one, many providers offer them for free. Some of the most popular will be GMAIL or YAHOO. Pick a name that you will remember and secure it with a strong password and some other security, such as 2 factor authentication. Have someone you trust that can also keep your information in case you cannot access it.
Second, you need to set up an account on LOGIN.GOV or ID.ME.
Third, finish setting up your account on https://www.ssa.gov/ myaccount/. You will be able to set up how you want Social Security to have you verify your identity and place additional security.
Fourth, if you had an account on myssa.gov prior to September, 2021, you need to still open an account at login.gov or id.me.
What happens if I miss the deadline? You will lose access to your online account if you had one or you will have to go to your social security office for information or to apply for benefits. This will become more and more difficult as you
age and need others to assist you. It will be hard on parents if their children that assist them live far away. The worst case scenario? We have to go to court to get a Conservatorship open in order to be able to help ill parents or spouses.
Best move is to have this bit of forced technology urge families to do more extensive planning for the digital future, and put appropriate safeguards in place so aging in place is less stressful. ~

Personalized holistic legal planning is an act of love, stewardship, and one of the most valued gifts you can invest in for your peace of mind now and for your family’s future.
At Ashley Day Law, we understand the wide variety of challenges facing families as they anticipate and experience life changes. Our firm is dedicated to providing clients with caring support, helpful and easy to understand information, and effective personalized legal planning. No matter what age or stage, it’s getting started that counts. We encourage you to contact us to discuss your needs and those of your family.
As the average age of our population rises, so does the risk of dementia.
For your family members, your planning manifests your love for them, providing peace of mind and the tools needed to ensure care is provided as planned.
When a family member begins showing signs of dementia, taking proactive legal and financial steps can help ensure their well-being and protect their interests. Here are some initial moves to consider:
n Consult an Elder Law Attorney: Seek a professional specializing in elder law to guide the family through legal options. They can help assess the situation and recommend appropriate actions based on the individual’s current mental capacity.
someone to make decisions on their behalf when they can no longer do so. Timing is critical—once capacity is lost, this option may no longer be viable.
n Update or Create a Will: Ensure the family member’s will reflects their current wishes. If they don’t have one, encourage them to create one while they can still express their intentions clearly.
n Establish Power of Attorney (POA): If the family member is still mentally competent, arrange for a durable power of attorney for healthcare and finances. This designates
n Consider a Living Trust: A revocable living trust can help manage assets during their lifetime and avoid probate after their passing. This requires the individual to have sufficient mental capacity to set it up.
n Review Advance Healthcare Directives: Help them document their healthcare preferences, such
as a living will or healthcare proxy, to outline their wishes for medical treatment if they become incapacitated.
n Assess Financial Situation: Gather information about their assets, debts, income sources (e.g., pensions, Social Security), and expenses. This provides a clear picture for planning.
n Simplify Finances: Consolidate accounts (e.g., bank accounts, investments) to make management easier. Set up automatic bill payments to prevent missed obligations.
n Monitor for Exploitation: Watch for signs of financial abuse, as dementia can make individuals vulnerable to scams. Consider adding a trusted family member to accounts for oversight (with permission if they’re still competent).
n Plan for Long-Term Care Costs: Research costs of in-home care, assisted living, or nursing homes, and explore funding options like long-term care insurance, Medicaid eligibility, or veterans’ benefits if applicable.
n Secure Important Documents: Locate and organize key documents—bank statements, insurance policies, property deeds, and tax records—so they’re accessible when needed.
n Act Early: Dementia is progressive, and legal and financial options diminish as cognitive decline advances. Early action preserves autonomy and reduces future stress.
n Involve the Family Member: If they’re still capable, include them in discussions to respect their preferences and maintain dignity.
n Seek Professional Help: A financial advisor or geriatric care manager can complement legal efforts, especially for complex estates or care planning.
At Ashley Day Law we will work with you to determine your priorities and what future needs must be met and put together the best course of action based on your income and assets to protect your quality of life and reduce unnecessary stress within the family.
We believe these steps will provide a good start to protect your family member’s interests and ensure their care aligns with their wishes as their condition evolves. For any questions or to discuss your situation, feel free to reach out to Ashley Day Law at 251-277-3377. ~

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”
Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance
Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)
$1,676 deductible (per benefit period)
It is possible to pay the $1676 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.
Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.
Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.
No coverage outside USA.
No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Medicare Part B Medical Insurance
Most people pay monthly $185 (Premium could be higher based on income)
$257 annual deductible. (this can increase each year)
80/20 after deductible.
Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, wellness & other Medicare approved benefits
Most doctors accept Medicare.
No coverage outside the USA.
No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Supplemental Policy Plans A - N
Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.
Guarantee Issue at initial enrollment (Other special enrollment periods may be available)
These plans generally pay the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits
When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered
Can provide benefits outside USA
Plans are available through insurance companies.
Important to add Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties.
Must have Part A & B to enroll.

With a reverse mortgage, you can access the money tied up in your home to pay for medical expenses, home repairs, daily living costs, or even travel and enjoy your retirement to the fullest. The best part? You continue to live in your home, with no monthly payments required. The loan is only repaid when you sell the house, move out, or pass away.
Why Consider a Reverse Mortgage?
Y No Monthly Payments: Enjoy the freedom of not worrying about mortgage payments.
Y Stay in Your Home: Keep your property while accessing its equity.
Y Flexibility: Use the funds for whatever you need, healthcare, debt relief, or simply improving your lifestyle.
Y Supplement Retirement Income: The money you receive is generally not considered taxable income.
Who Qualifies? To qualify, you must be 62 or older and own a home. The amount you can borrow depends on factors like your home’s value, your age, and current interest rates.
Are you still wondering if a reverse mortgage could be right for you? You’re not alone. Many seniors feel uncertain about this option at first, but with the right guidance, it could make a huge difference in your financial well-being.
That’s why we’re here to guide you through the process every step of the way. Don’t hesitate to explore your options. Your home could be the key to unlocking a brighter, more comfortable future.

For decades, the SS United States was the pinnacle of American innovation, a sleek, steel-clad symbol of speed and luxury that ruled the high seas.
Now, after years of uncertainty, this legendary ocean liner has found a temporary home in Mobile, Alabama, where it will undergo preparations for its final transformation—becoming
SS United States is embarking on its final journey, and Mobile is playing a crucial role in its farewell.
The Glory Days: Speed, Luxury, and Hollywood Fame
the world’s largest artificial reef.
As of March 28, 2025, the ship sits docked at the Port of Mobile, a ghost of its former grandeur but still commanding awe. Its arrival has sparked excitement, nostalgia, and even a bit of controversy as preservationists scramble for a last-minute rescue. But love it or mourn it, the
Launched in 1952, the SS United States – also known as the Big U was an engineering marvel. Built in Newport News, Virginia, it was designed to be both a luxury ocean liner and a secret military asset, capable of transforming into a troop transport if needed with the ability to carry 14,000 troops 10,000 miles without refueling. On its maiden voyage, it shattered records, crossing the Atlantic in just three days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes—a feat no other passenger ship has beaten to this day
For nearly two decades, it was the
way to travel between the United States and Europe. Celebrities, dignitaries, and socialites graced its decks, reveling in its opulent design and unparalleled speed. Hollywood took notice, too. The ship made memorable appearances in films like Disney’s 1962 classic Bon Voyage!, where it served as the glamorous setting for a family adventure, and 1955’s Gentlemen Marry Brunettes, where its sleek profile played a starring role. Even
the beginning of a long, uncertain future.
For decades, the once-proud liner sat idle in Philadelphia, rusting away as preservation efforts struggled to secure funding. Dreams of transforming it into a hotel, museum, or entertainment venue never materialized.
in 2013, the thriller Dead Man Down used the SS United States for atmospheric shots while it was docked in Philadelphia.
But the golden age of ocean liners was not meant to last. By 1969, the rise of jet travel rendered transatlantic crossings obsolete, and the SS United States was retired—marking
Then, in 2024, a decision was made: Okaloosa County, Florida, would purchase the vessel and repurpose it as an artificial reef—a $10 million project that would give the ship a new purpose beneath the waves of the Gulf of America.
Thus began the ship’s 401st and final voyage. On February 19, 2025, it was towed 1,800 nautical miles from Philadelphia to Mobile, arriving ahead of schedule on March 3. Spectators lined the waterfront, watching as the once-glorious ocean liner, now a shell of its former self, was guided into port.
Now docked at Modern American Recycling Services (MARS), the SS United States is undergoing extensive preparation before its submersion. Over the next six to twelve months, crews will strip the ship of Continued on next page
non-metal materials, wiring, and hazardous components, ensuring it is environmentally safe. Holes will be carefully cut into the hull so that when it is finally submerged, it settles upright—providing a thriving habitat for grouper, snapper, and tuna.
While many celebrate this transformation as a fitting second life, preservationists aren’t giving up without a fight. Organizations like the SS United States Conservancy continue to push for an alternative, hoping to turn the ship into a floating museum akin to the USS Alabama in Mobile Bay.
Regardless of its fate, the SS United States has already left an impact on Mobile’s tourism scene. Locals and visitors alike are flocking to catch a glimpse of this historic ship before it disappears beneath the ocean. Harbor cruises aboard the Perdido Queen and tours through Blakeley State Park have
sold out quickly with maritime enthusiasts eager to snap photos and reflect on the ship’s remarkable past and those looking to explore Mobile’s deep connections to the sea.
Despite the nostalgia, the clock is ticking. Soon, the SS United States will make its last journey, not to another port, but to the ocean floor off the coast of Florida. Once there, it will begin its final role—not as a fading relic, but as a vibrant, living reef, fostering marine life for generations to come. For now, as it looms over the Port of Mobile, it remains a towering testament to American ingenuity, ambition, and the fleeting nature of technological supremacy. Whether you see it as a tragic loss or a poetic new beginning, one thing is certain: the legacy of the SS United States will live on—above the waves, beneath the ocean, and in the hearts of those who remember its glory. ~

Veterans deserve robust support after their service, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides benefits beyond medical care, including nonmedical support, home health agency services, and hospice care.
These programs aim to improve quality of life, maintain independence, and offer comfort when needed most. Here’s how Veterans and their families can tap into these valuable resources.
Non-medical benefits help Veterans with everyday tasks. The Veteran Directed Care (VDC) program lets Veterans hire aides—often family or friends—to assist with activities like bathing or cooking. It provides a monthly budget tailored to their needs, giving them control over their care. Another option, the Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit, boosts pensions for Veterans needing help with daily activities or who are housebound. This extra funding can cover non-medical caregivers, supporting Veterans in staying at home comfortably.
For more structured assistance, the VA collaborates with home health agencies through the VA Home Health Care program. Certified aides provide non-medical help, such as personal care, light housekeeping, or mobility support. While not involving
skilled nursing, these services are vital for independence. Veterans must be enrolled in VA health care and show a need for aid, as determined by a VA provider. The Homemaker and Home Health Aide program offers similar support for those with chronic conditions, delivering consistent, personalized care.
For Veterans with terminal illnesses, the VA’s hospice care focuses on comfort, not cure, offering pain relief, emotional support, and family counseling. Available through VA facilities, community partners, or at home, the VA Hospice and Palliative Care program aligns with Veterans’ wishes, typically at no cost. Veterans on a VA pension may also use A&A benefits to help with expenses, reducing financial stress during this time.
Veterans can explore these options by contacting their local VA office or visiting VA.gov. Eligibility hinges on factors like service history, disability status, and income, so speaking with a VA representative is essential. These benefits honor Veterans by ensuring their comfort and independence throughout life’s stages, reflecting a national commitment to their well-being. ~
