reaction for our hair, and not for the better. When we turn on the heat it dries out the air in our homes, which in turn dries out our hair. Our hair ends up being static central, or even worse, dry itchy scalp. Here are a few tricks and tips to keep those flyaways and dry flaky scalp at bay.

1. Run your humidifier as soon as you turn on the furnace.

2. Step up your conditioner in the shower--if you don’t normally use conditioner, talk to your stylist to find the right conditioner for you.

3. Itchy dry scalp? Find a shampoo containing pyrithione zinc. You can also massage conditioner into your scalp. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

Parched skin is a common complaint during winter months, and for good reason. Indoors, the air is dry; outside, the winds are brutal. We turn showers and baths warmer, stay in the water longer, and spend less time caring for our skin. Unfortunately, what might have been minor dryness on younger skin can be a major discomfort on aging skin. Avoid tight, itchy, flaky skin this winter with the following tips.

may be best known for his prowess as head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In a state where football reigns supreme and those who warm the seats are diehard fans, Osborne’s success would be hard to miss.

But to those same fans, it has also been impossible not to notice Osborne’s character.

Win or lose, he displayed grace. Practice or game, he had determination. And on or off the field, he was a man any person would be honored to call friend.

These days, he’s no longer wearing a headset, holding a clipboard, and heading up a football team. But Osborne has not stopped leading. Not by a long shot. In fact, he may be pushing forward in even more important ways than ever before.

“I don’t know that I would choose to define my legacy with championships,” he said.

“I think it’s more what you do throughout your lifetime rather than one event. I would hope that people wouldn’t look at championships as the defining aspect of my life.”

When asked recently which championship from his time in Nebraska football he would use to define his legacy, Osborne did not mince words in clarifying what legacy means to him.

If it were possible for us to love Tom Osborne any more than we already did, those words would solidify it. Here is a man who could remind us of his many successes, try to build his own platform, or use his past feats to sing his own praise. But he doesn’t. Quite to the contrary, his down to earth realism and his concern for the welfare of others drive him to do more. And he continues to succeed in the most valuable way—his investment in the lives of those who need help.

Q.

How do you approach things in your life differently now that you are older?

A.

I think you have a little more perspective on life. When you’re younger, of course, you have more energy. I have to pick my spots a little better now that I’m just about 80.

Q.

So what does life

look like these days?

A.

I travel a lot. I spend probably 40-50 hours a week working for TeamMates and travel the state. I get home kind of late and get up early.

Q.

Do you anticipate slowing down?

A.

Some people live for retirement. I have not found myself to be built in such a way that doing nothing or just sitting watching TV is very fulfilling. So I feel fortunate to have something that I find very meaningful in my life, and that is trying to recruit mentors and continue to grow TeamMates.

Q.

How does this program connect with our readers, most of whom are retirement age and older?

A.

A lot of our mentors are people who are retired. We have mentors who are 19 years old and we have mentors who are well into their eighties. I think that it’s somewhat of a mistake to assume that you have a formal work life and then all of a sudden you are put on the shelf and that you have nothing left to contribute. There are so many young people today that really don’t have any extended family around them.

Kids today really do value sometimes having an older person like a grandparent type figure in their life as a mentor.

Q.

You’re very passionate about TeamMates, which you and your wife Nancy founded twenty-five years ago. How has it grown?

A.

We are currently mentoring about 8,000 young people in about 150 school districts across Nebraska and Iowa, and we are starting now in Wyoming and Kansas, as well. So that’s really what I do. I’ve always been interested in young people and this is just another way of trying to engage them and serve them better.

Q.

The core values of the TeamMates program are commitment to youth, safety, integrity, trust, and inclusion.

What does that translate to in real action?

A.

We’re certainly interested in letting these young people know that they have somebody in their lives who cares about them unconditionally, somebody that’s a good listener, and somebody who’s going to take a long view in terms of what’s in their long-term best interest and provide some guidance.

Q.

The heart of the program revolves around the mentor/ mentee relationship, then? Do all mentors fit a certain mold?

A.

A mentor, I guess, would be defined as an advocate; a guide; someone who cares unconditionally. We’re not necessarily coming in with a 3 point plan trying to fix a young person. A mentoring relationship should be guided primarily by a young person and what that person needs at that presAs he speaks, Osborne’s voice carries conviction, direction, and focus. He’s a man ent time. But we do also feel that our mentees need to have used to calling the plays, and the only way to make good calls is to see the field clearly; to know your opponent; to know your players; to know yourself. As always, a marketable skill, and that usually involves something his playbook doesn’t disappoint. He’s done his homework—he used to watch beyond high school. So we try hours of tape on every opponent before heading into each game; now he channels to make sure that they’re aware that same energy through the Teammates program to battle against a new of scholarships, how to jump opponent--young people lacking family stability. through the hoops of applying for college, and all those kinds of things.

A.

Mentoring in the elementary school sometimes looks a little different than what it would look like with a middle school or high school student. We start as young as third grade in mentoring, and they play board games, take a walk around the school yard, go to the gym and shoot baskets, or do something like crafts.

As time goes on, it seems like the relationship evolves more to simply sitting down and talking about what’s going on in that young person’s life, some of the challenges they’re facing.

Once they get about the tenth grade, we identify strengths, and often those strengths will lead to hobbies, academic majors, and conversations about a career path where those strengths could lead to something you do the rest of your life.

Q.

What’s your take on retirement getting in the way of being involved?

A.

Sometimes people have the idea, ‘Well, I’ve worked all my life and now I need to sit back and enjoy myself.’ But I would caution people—it’s amazing how many feel that retirement is going to be a wonderful life, and then they find that there’s something missing; they got a certain sense of meaning and purpose from caring for a family and being engaged in a job that was productive, and then all the sudden it’s kind of like you’re on the shelf. I think remaining engaged and of service is really important, and understanding that you can still be relevant irrespective of your age. If you read the scriptures, there’s not a lot about retirement plans in there.

Can you speak to the lasting difference that mentors make?

A.

Most of our young people who are being mentored say they would like to become mentors themselves. When somebody invests in you there’s a tendency to want to pass that on in return.

That’s one of the healthy outcomes of mentoring. There will be a ripple effect, because you won’t just impact the life of that one person. You will also impact quite often their children, their family, people they work with.

If you can influence a young person to get a better education, to live a more productive life, to make better decisions, the impact you have will be replicated down through many generations.

And so it’s much more powerful than many people realize.

Nurturing A Healthy Life

How my life as a full time caregiver finally taught me to care for myself BY: SHEENA PRACYK, RN, CHWC, CWWA

The start.

Becoming a caregiver was an unplanned event. My husband and I had just arrived in a new community and were excited to get started with our new job opportunities. His mother and aunt, although approaching eighty years old, were both in good health and enjoying independent living. Within months, both were ill, hospitalized and unable to return to their own homes, so they became part of our family and home. Instead of starting my new nursing position, I became a full time family caregiver.

The consequences.

Like many other caregivers, the daily responsibilities and duties I carried took a significant physical and psychological toll on my well-being, but these were ignored until the end of that four-year period. My personal journey to heal and reclaim myself in body, mind and spirit took the next few years and continues today in my self-care practices. It also inspired my change in career from nursing people through illness and disease to coaching them towards health and wellness.

It is my hope that by spreading the importance and possibilities of maintaining health through good self-care practices, more caregivers can perform their duties without the negative physical and mental consequences. It is possible!

My Top Tips for Self Care:

BE RESILIENT RATHER THAN STRONG.

When faced with challenges, we often draw on our internal energy and power – our strength. However, resilience is our ability to recover from setbacks, adapt to change and keep going in the face of adversity. When your energy and strength are low, your resilience will keep you pushing ahead.

EXPLORE, COMMUNICATE AND WORK THROUGH THE FEELINGS.

You may feel anger, grief, frustration, guilt, sadness, disappointment, despair, and much more. Expressing your feelings to a friend, family member or healthcare provider can decrease your stress and allow you to deal with emotions constructively.

It also helps others understand your position and provide support.

IT’S OK TO SOMETIMES PUT YOURSELF FIRST.

If you don’t take care of yourself you cannot take care of anyone else! Taking time to exercise, feeding yourself, getting rest, going out with your family or friends, or attending to the affairs of your life is important. Your own life matters. SELF CARE is NOT SELFISH…it is SELF PRESERVATION…it is SURVIVAL.

BALANCE THE NEGATIVES WITH POSITIVES.

Do something fun or joyful every day.

Read, paint, have a manicure or coffee with a friend. Taking a break recharges you. Develop an “attitude of gratitude”; even in the darkest of times, there may be kindnesses and joys to appreciate and acknowledge.

BE OPEN TO THE HELP AND SUPPORT OF OTHERS.

Recognize your limits and ask for or accept help from others. Develop your resources and support network, which may include friends and family, church, and community services such as senior centers, meals on wheels or transport vans. Home health care services may also be available with insurance or for a fee.

USE YOUR HEALTHCARE TEAM.

Make a list of questions ahead of each appointment to make sure nothing gets overlooked. Ask if there is a care coordinator or case manager assigned to assist with arrangements and communication on care issues.

FEED YOUR BODY NOT YOUR EMOTIONS.

MOVE YOUR BODY.

TAKE SOME QUIET TIME.

Skipping meals, eating junk food, and comfort eating are easy to slip into, so plan eating time into your daily schedule. Start the day with a good breakfast; carry an apple or trail mix in your bag for an “on the go snack”; and drink water during the day. Stock your home with nutritious foods so a healthy meal of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is easier to make.

Be creative: soups and smoothies can be a quick way to take in daily nutrients, and crock-pots or one-dish casseroles can be time savers. Alternatively, prepare meals ahead and store them ready to heat and serve later in the week.

Exercise helps release stress and boost energy, plus it can provide a welcome break. Take a simple walk in the fresh air, a yoga class, or whatever works and is enjoyable for you.

Fit it in, even if it is a walk through hospital hallways for ten minutes instead of sitting in a bedside chair or waiting room.

At the start of the day, end of the day or any time you feel the need, find a quiet spot, sit comfortably and just breathe evenly in and out.

Don’t forget you need to nurture a healthy life!

The year was 1996. I had made the trek from Waterloo, WI to arrive in Lincoln, NE on the eve of the opening game of the Cornhuskers ’96 football season.

The Huskers were coming off consecutive National Championships. Most in the world of college football were all but handing a third title to the Huskers even before any games were played. There was a heightened sense of anticipation and enthusiasm across the state of Nebraska for their beloved Cornhuskers to make a run for yet another National Championship.

By the time the season had arrived, my love for my cornhuskers was at a fanatical level. I got swept away in the “Big Red” wave of football fervor. That wave engulfed me. It compelled me to travel 500 miles to Lincoln to just be a part of the start to the Huskers third straight National Championship campaign. I arrived in Lincoln late Friday afternoon, the day before the opening game against Michigan State. I very much wanted to meet my football role model – Tom Osborne. During the nine-hour journey from Wisconsin, I had repeatedly prayed asking God to somehow allow the opportunity to meet Coach Osborne.

Philippians 2:4-11 requires us to “look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” We are to have our attitude the same as that of Christ, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.”

I navigated my way to Lincoln Memorial Stadium, the hallowed home of the Huskers. The football team had just dismissed from its pregame walk-through. Here’s my chance, I thought. I entered through the south entrance of the stadium which is where all the coach’s offices were located and made my way up a flight of stairs to discover that I was standing right outside of Coach Osborne’s office. He wasn’t there, having not returned from practice yet. His secretary said that if I was willing, I could try and wait for his arrival.

As I was waiting, Coach Ron Brown happened to come to his office. He greeted me and asked if he could be of help. I told him of my travel and my desire to meet Coach Osborne. He informed me that Coach Osborne was about to leave the facility, but if I hurried, I might catch him. I scurried back down that flight of stairs, out those south entrance doors to the coach’s parking lot, and there he was, making his way to his car. “Coach Osborne!” I called out to him. Before I knew it we were engaged in conversation, me, with Coach Osborne. God had answered my prayers!

As we talked, I told him of my faith in Jesus Christ and how I was serving God as a pastor in Wisconsin. I

expressed to him how much I respected his testimony for Jesus Christ, and what an outstanding example he was of what it means to be a Christian in such a cut-throat, competitive arena that is college football.

As our conversation continued, Coach Osborne asked if I had a ticket for tomorrow’s game. With tongue in cheek I said, “Not yet, I’m living by faith.” In response, he set down his suitcoat and briefcase and started searching saying, “I might still have a sideline pass you can have.” You can well imagine me standing there in disbelief. As it turned out, he didn’t have any passes left, for which he apologized. Our conversation concluded with me trying to find the words that would express how incredibly grateful I was for the privilege of meeting him, and for him taking the time to talk with me. He so humbly expressed to me gratitude for coming such a distance and desiring to meet him.

I don’t’ think that I’ll ever forget my encounter with the legendary coach of the three-time National Champion Cornhuskers, but what impressed me most was his humility. I encountered first-hand a living epistle and example of humility.

In November 2016, I started a journey at my new job as Community Relations Manager at Mosaic in Northeast Nebraska. Since then, our agency has hit the ground running with opportunities to showcase our mission and educate the communities we serve on what exactly our 104-year-old non-profit has been up to in the last century.

Mosaic satisfies a need for people in every community. The need? Quality of life. Mosaic works in 13 different states and in 30 different agencies to provide a life of opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities. Since our start in 1913, we have always strived to provide the best possible services to people and their families living with intellectual disabilities and to integrate them into and contribute to society. Mosaic in Northeast Nebraska has been very successful in accomplishing this mission.

Northeast Nebraska serves in three different communities; Norfolk, Columbus and Fremont.

As Community Relations Manager, it’s my job to strengthen relationships within each community and start new ones. We work with the Chamber of Commerce, churches, schools, businesses and other non-profits to help us give the people we serve the best life possible.

Whether it’s a Sunday school class who wants to donate a portion of their fundraising money; a local radio station who wants to give a tour of their facility or a pet facility that lets us come in

and help take care of the animals, we are always looking for opportunities to contribute and provide in our community and to strengthen the agency’s advocacy, commitment, creativity and teamwork.

Holiday Dinners Every year, each location gets together for the holidays and celebrates with our friends and families with a holiday dinner at a local church.

This is a fantastic way for local businesses and volunteers to help provide a special dinner and experience for the holidays to the people we serve. We are blessed to receive donations of dinner items, dessert, table settings, event space, etc. each year. It always warms my heart with how giving each community is and how much they want to see us succeed at giving everyone a special experience during the holidays.

St. John’s Lutheran Church Big Give The Big Give is now in each community we serve! Each Big Give event is a 24-hour period of giving where supporters from Fremont, Columbus and Norfolk are invited to give back to their favorite local charities/non-profits and educate themselves on the impact each makes in their community. Mosaic has been able to partner with Subway in Fremont, Columbus and Norfolk to sell boxed lunches for five dollars. This has been a fun event for each agency. It has a competition-feel where we see who can sell the most boxed lunches at each location. It’s such a wonderful way to educate the public on who we are and what we do in the community.

Partners in Possibilities Event Mosaic’s main fundraiser luncheon of the year is always a fun one. We hear testimony from family, friends and the people we serve. We have people in the community get together for one hour for lunch to hear the mission of Mosaic and to see how their local agency has personally changed the lives of so many people.

It’s a heart-warming experience and it shows everyone how much their hard work pays off when we all come together to help serve in our community.

When a Veteran is handed an American Flag, large or small, one of the first things they do is look at the tag. If it doesn’t say ‘Made in the USA’, you will get it back. And rightly so. Every other citizen in this country should follow suit.

It’s really that simple. Look at the tag. Make sure it’s made here. If it’s not, move on. Why would anyone purchase an American flag made in another country? One by one, make the choice, make the difference. Support our country, our citizens, our economy and most importantly, our Veterans.

Several years ago a young family moved to a small community in Nebraska looking for simpler times.

After settling into their home, they purchased a 1949 Chevy pickup truck from a local farmer. The farmer was a proud owner and wanted to make sure whoever purchased the Chevy would enjoy good times.

Soon the seasons were changing and the young couple chose Belden, Nebraska as the destination to pick out the perfect Christmas tree. The snow was glistening on that bright winter day as they walked to the top of the hill and cut down the perfect tree. Feeling the excitement, they headed home to prepare for Christmas. As they did every year, they brought out the manager scene. The characters were painted by a great aunt, while the wooden manager was handcrafted by the young man who only owned a hammer, three boards, and a couple of nails. The family celebrated the meaning of Christmas with joy and decorated the tree together, reflecting on their love for each other.

Owning the Chevy truck was more than transportation for the family. It was also used sell firewood so the young man could purchase gifts for his family and the young lady could drive to craft shows to sell homemade candies so she could buy him gifts. Christmas day arrived and the family was thankful for all the blessings God had provided. He had taken care of their needs during the year, provided a warm home in the country, and given the family life with each other.

With only a small amount of money, they exchanged gifts—a gold necklace and charm for her, and a tin of homemade peanut brittle and warm jacket for him.

Gift giving comes from the heart, and simpler times remind us of the real meaning of Christmas. The greatest gift of all is the love of Jesus Christ who came into this world for each of us. “Unto you is born this day a Savior who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:44

KAY DAY, CO-FOUNDER OF COLOR THE WIND FESTIVAL EXPANDS THE HORIZONS OF KITE FLYING But they are great conversation starters and “friend magnets”. It wasn’t long before Larry and I made many kite flying friends. We began participating in kite festivals throughout the Midwest. One thing led to another and 16 years ago, we hosted our first “Color the Wind” kite festival on the frozen waters of Clear Lake, Iowa.

All of us have vivid memories

of flying kites as kids. What fun we had!

Remembering this, my husband Larry and I stopped into a little kite shop several years ago to buy kites for our grandchildren. Of course, every grandfather must test the new toy to make sure it works! It worked, alright! Grandpa was soon back at the kite shop to buy a little larger kite for himself, and that’s how it began!

We were happy to discover that we were still physically capable of flying kites when we realized you don’t have to run to launch even the biggest of kites! Flying kites can be a quiet, solitary pastime.

being outdoors under blue sky and sunshine, feeling the wind on our faces and the tug of the kite as it soared higher and higher.

There is no sight more beautiful than hundreds of colorful kites contrasted with a background of dazzling white snow and ice.

You don’t have to have warm weather and grass underfoot to enjoy flying! Winter brings us cleaner, steadier winds and the frozen lake is an ideal flying field with no obstructions such as fences, light poles, etc. You just need to dress appropriately for the weather to fully enjoy the day .

“Color the Wind” now attracts kite flyers from at least nine states and crowds that have been estimated at more than 7,000. We clear paths through the snow on the lake so that people with baby strollers and those in wheelchairs can join us for the fun.

If you come to the kite festival, you will see more than just traditionally styled kites. You will also see huge inflatable kites shaped like whales, teddy bears, tigers and octopi. Stunt kite teams fly two and four line kites in sky ballets choregraphed to music.

Larry and I are now 71 and 76 years old and still find great joy not only in flying our kites, but also in putting smiles on peoples’ faces as they watch the kites dancing in the air. That’s our passion. And it’s keeping us young!

5 Minute Flatbread Pizza 5 slices turkey pepperoni 1/8 tsp. dried basil 1 can pizza sauce 1 Italian herb flatbread, light 1/3 cup Italian cheese Spread pizza sauce evenly over flatbread. Lightly sprinkle with basil.

Layer cheese and pepperoni over the top of flatbread. Fold flatbread in half.

Preheat medium pan over heat, then cook the flatbread, covered, for about 3 minutes. Flip and cook other side. Remove from heat when golden brown. Cut into wedges and serve with additional pizza sauce for dipping.

2 ½ lbs roast beef 1 white or yellow onion 1 cup beef broth 1 tsp. garlic pepper 2 tsp. Italian seasoning 6 hoagie rolls (split in half ) 6 slices American or provolone cheese ½ jar roasted red peppers Combine first 5 ingredients in crockpot; simmer 4-6 hours until cooked.

Stir well and serve on split rolls.

While still hot, top sandwiches with cheese and peppers.

Pretzel S'mores Tiny Bites

A treasured recipe for s’mores fans, these tiny bites are simple while maintaining the classic campfire feeling.

1 bag waffle pretzels 1 bag marshmallows 1 cup creamy peanut butter 1 semi-sweet chocolate bar 1 box graham crackers Parchment paper Baking Sheet Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

Arrange pretzels on parchment paper, dab a small amount of peanut butter onto each pretzel, and top with marshmallows.

Bake 2 minutes; remove from oven. Add another layer of pretzels and peanut butter. Bake additional minute, just enough to warm marshmallows without melting.

Melt chocolate in microwave for 30 seconds at a time until melted, stirring every 30 seconds.

Remove baking sheet from oven. Once pretzel bites are cooled, dip in melted chocolate and sprinkle with crushed graham crackers.

Roasted Turkey 14 lbs. turkey, fresh or thawed 2 T butter 1 sprig fresh parsley 1 sprig fresh rosemary 1 sprig fresh sage 1 sprig fresh thyme 1 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. salt 1 lemon 1 medium yellow onion Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Melt butter; add seasonings to melted butter. Apply seasoned butter inside cavity of turkey and on outside of turkey. Quarter lemons and onions and place inside turkey. Cover turkey with oven bag and place on roasting pan.

Roast at 500 degrees for 1 hour.

Remove from oven and let rest 30 minutes. Remove from oven bag, cut, and serve.

Molasses Cookies ¾ cup butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1 egg ¼ tsp. molasses

2 cups flour 2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 ¼ tsp. ginger ¼ tsp. cloves

Cream together first 4 ingredients, then sift and blend dry ingredients with creamed ingredients.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Shape dough into small balls, roll in granulated sugar, and place on cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes, cool, and store in airtight container.

After a 4 mile hike up the Smokey Mountains and moments when we didn’t think we could make it, it was worth the struggle to get to the top. Seeing a waterfall frozen was one of the most breathtaking views I’ve seen. The Smokey Mountains in February have a special kind of look!

Internationally recognized and Nebraska native, artist Todd A. Williams’s mission is to depict significant historic, geographic, and figurative elements from each of the 93 counties.

Todd has worked with historians, sponsors, and leaders in each county to help him determine significant subjects. These paintings will inspire 46 SLA FALL/WINTER 2017

thousands of people in Nebraska and reach well beyond the state’s borders with a traveling exhibition, a Legacy of Nebraska commemorative collectors’ art book, and a documentary film produced by NET, Nebraska’s public television affiliate.

From 1895 to 1916, Nebraska was the fourth-largest wheat-producing state. In 1916, the state’s average yield per acre was nearly double the national average. During 1915 and 1916, many instances occurred where men purchased a quarter to a full section of land and paid for the entire acreage with one crop of wheat.

In the painting above the harvesters are racing against the impending storm to gather what they can for that day before the rain pours down.

The storm clouds have separated enough for the wheat to shine as bright as gold against the purple sky.

Nebraska Celebrates 150 Years of statehood

On March 1, 1867, Nebraska was admitted to the union as the 37th state and launched its settlers into a future of pure prosperity. Settlers from all walks of life laid claim to this great state that still maintains some of the best farmland and ranchland in the nation. Native Americans, missionaries, European migrants, and explorers were among the first people to create what we now call Nebraska. Businesses like the Missouri Fur Company and the Union Pacific Railroad gave Nebraska strong beginnings while world-changers like Father Edward Flanagan and Charles Lindurg built the Cornhusker state a legacy.

150 years later, that legacy is celebrated during the anniversary of statehood for Nebraska.

This sesquicentennial celebration includes countless events across the state and is led by a commission of distinguished citizens, an executive board, and a small team of staff. The first lady of Nebraska, Susanne Shore, currently serves as the president of the Board of Directors.

According to the event website, the goal of the board is to bridge Nebraskans across different communities, perspectives, and cultures and instill an even greater sense of pride.

So far, the event line-up has made for a joyful year, offering everything from record-setting cakes to historical 48 SLA FALL/WINTER 2017

reenactments. There have been many opportunities to get involved, like an ongoing tree planting initiative and even a statewide oral history project. Communities from all corners of the state have been encouraged to host new or existing events and become official partners.

Even further north, Dr. Randy Bertolas of Wayne State College created a student atlas of Nebraska that will be distributed to every 4th grader statewide.

Additionally, there are several events still on the schedule to attend in late 2017.

Norfolk Oktoberfest Family Festival, a celebration of fall harvest and German heritage, is an official partner of the 150 during the last weekend of September.

Seward Nebraska will also be hosting their annual Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival as part of thejud sesquicentennial in late September.

When the temperature drops, seniors have a higher risk of health problems and injuries related to the weather, including hypothermia, frostbite, and falls in ice and snow. Here’s what you need to know.

HYPOTHERMIA:

Our bodies react differently to colder weather as we age, producing less body heat and making it harder to recognize when the temperature is too low. When the body is too cold for too long it begins to lose heat quickly which results in hypothermia, a dangerous drop in body temperature.

3. Stay Indoors when it’s very cold

outside, especially if it’s also very windy.

Keep indoor temperatures at about 65 degrees. If you must go outside, don’t stay out for very long, and go indoors if you start shivering.

4. Stay dry. Wet clothing chills your body quickly.

5. Wear layers. Two or three thinner

layers of loose fitting clothing is warmer than a single layer of thick clothing. Layers include hats, gloves, mittens, coats, boots, and a scarf to cover exposed skin (especially the mouth and nose to help to protect the lungs from cold air).

FROSTBITE:

Extreme cold can cause damage to the skin that can go all the way to the bone.

Frostbite usually affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes. Those with heart disease and other circulation problems are more likely to get frostbite.

Dry Eye Disease: Not Just Grandma’s Problem Anymore WITH DR. BRUENING

Twenty-five years ago, the typical dry eye patient was a post-menopausal woman with symptoms of eyes burning, stinging, redness, grittiness, watering, and/or blurred vision particularly after sustained reading. Nowadays, these dry eye symptoms are increasingly seen in younger men and women.

Risk factors include age, female gender, smoking, extended computer and digital device usage, contact lens wear, eye drops containing BAK preservatives as found in many glaucoma medicines, systemic oral medications such as antihistamines, antidepressants, antianxiety meds, corticosteroids, and diseases such as arthritis, rosacea, Parkinson’s, and Sjogren’s syndrome.

With each blink, our cornea is bathed in a complex liquid produced by our eyelids and surrounding tissues. These liquid tears contain a unique balance of many nutrients, antibacterial substances, and oil critical to maintain good surface ocular health and good vision. The lacrimal gland sits against our eyeball beneath the bone of our upper outer eyebrow and releases the nutritious water portion of our tears, while the 30 to 40 meibomian glands on each eyelid just inside the eyelashes secrete the oil that prevents evaporation.

With age, there is a normal decline in the volume of basal tear production and a shift in the balance of the proteins/contents of the tears, resulting in dry eye symptoms. The oil component of the tears also declines with age as the oil producing meibomian glands in the eyelids that compress with each blink may become blocked, plugged or degenerate, or the eyelids themselves become loose and don’t fit as tightly up against the eyeball to allow that compression.

The first step in successful therapy is correctly identifying the underlying contributing factors. Often dry eye is multifactorial in nature involving any combination of reduced tear production, poor quality oil production, abnormal eyelid positioning, systemic medications, systemic diseases, or environmental conditions.

Dry eye is a chronic disease and can be treated effectively with simple inexpensive measures with fairly rapid relief in most cases.

Treatment varies with the findings but can include use of artificial tears, warm compresses and lid massage, prescription eye drops, oral medications, punctual plugs, wraparound sunglasses, omega 3 supplements, manual expression of blocked meibomian glands, or surgical repair of eyelid malpositioning.

Heartland Counseling Services Inc., is a non-profit organization designed to offer behavioral health resources and services to the residents of the state of Nebraska regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. We provide community support for both mental health and substance abuse. The Emergency Crisis Response program helps individuals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All individuals including children, adults, families, groups, and couples are encouraged to attend continuing care groups and therapy.

THREE APPROACHES FOR DEALING WITH THE LAKE HOME: 1. Place in a Revocable Living Trust. This leaves the parents in control of the assets, and at death allows for a quicker, cheaper, and more private transfer of wealth. The lake house can remain in trust for the benefit of the children, providing rules for how the children use and share the home.

2. Put in an LLC. If the parents have enough wealth to be worried about federal estate taxes, another strategy is placing the home in an LLC owned by a trust. By establishing a Lake Home, LLC, the parents create rules for the use of the property and can pass it on in increments to the next generation.

3. Qualified Personal Residence Trust. Not appropriate for all situations, it is a good strategy when the parents don’t mind passing on the lake home during their lives, are not worried about their children’s creditors or marriages, and are looking for a more aggressive tax savings on the transfer.
