HURRICANE SHELTER INFORMATION
Brevard County strongly urges that a public shelter be used only as a last resort. You will be more comfortable sheltering with friends, family or in commercial lodging.
For shelter locations go to Brevard County Emergency Management brevardfl.gov/emergencymanagment.
BRING THE FOLLOWING TO THE SHELTER:
1. Enough food and supplies to last several days, including special diet foods, since food might not be readily available at the shelter.
2. Bottled water (one gallon/person/day) and other beverages.
3. A manual can opener, eating utensils, paper plates, cups and napkins/paper towels.
4. Infant formula/food/diapers and wipes.
5. Two-week supply of medications and first-aid kit.
6. Cash or traveler’s checks.
7. Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows and folding chairs. Bedding is not provided in public shelters.
8. Personal hygiene items and changes of clothing.
9. Flashlight, battery-powered radio/TV and spare batteries, cards, games, books and toys.
10. Include items that can help, such as hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, bar or liquid soap, disinfectant wipes (if available) and two masks for each person.
Do not take pets (except guide dogs), alcoholic beverages or weapons of any kind into public shelters. For more information, call 321-637-6670.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION SHELTERS
Shelter openings are incident specific. Never go to a shelter unless local officials have announced it is open. Shelter openings will be announced through local television, radio stations, social media and the Brevard County Emergency Management website. Shelters are designed to house residents of the barrier islands (including Merritt Island), those in low-lying or flood-prone areas, those in mobile/manufactured homes, or those with no other sheltering options. If you choose to go to a shelter, follow these instructions:
• Stay as calm as possible and take your disaster supply kit.
• Bring your own cots or sleeping materials.
• Bring changes of clothing and wear sturdy shoes.
• If you have dietary restrictions, bring food that you will be able to eat.
• Bring what you need to stay comfortable and entertained.
• Not all shelters will have electricity throughout the emergency.
• Shelter rules — if staying in a shelter, be aware of the shelter rules:
• We are guests. Please treat the facility, equipment and staff respectfully.
• No disorderly or disruptive behavior will be allowed.
• No smoking, alcohol or drugs allowed.
• No guns or weapons of any kind permitted.
• You must sign in when you arrive and sign out when you leave.
Other shelters are available and are opened once the primary shelter has reached 85 percent occupancy rate.
SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTER:
The Special Needs Registry is a confidential listing of those people who meet program criteria and is updated on an annual basis. Patients with colostomy assistance needs, nebulizers, oxygen, feeding tubes or Alzheimer’s disease are examples of medical criteria that are eligible for the registry.
Individuals who elect to use a Special Needs or other public shelter should bring with them items such as cots, bedding, medicine, medical supplies and food supplies, preparing to be self sufficient for 72 hours. Special Needs registrants should also be accompanied by at least one caregiver. Occupants’ comfort will be determined by their preparedness.
For more information, call 321-637-6670.
Register by using the link below: web.brevardcounty.us/SpecialNeeds/Registration.aspx.
ANIMAL SHELTERS & BOARDING
All county animal shelters will be open, unless ordered evacuated, and will receive pets from mandatory evacuation areas. Call the following numbers for information concerning pet sheltering during a disaster:

A trip to the Relics Museum will be a dream for collectors and a walk through time
Edward Rensing
SPACE COAST’S SOON-TO-BE NEWEST GEM
RELICS MUSEUM
As a young boy growing up in a blue-collar neighborhood, Edward Rensing sprouted an interest in collecting things in his childhood instinct to explore.
“I started with rocks,” he said standing next to a display of semiprecious stones. “I would break them to see what was inside.”
That interest in collecting grew beyond his retirement as the CEO of an electronics company a few years ago until he realized the size of the collection he had amassed.
The artifacts, vintage toys, figurines, handguns, native American items, including weapons and so many other items, stuffed his bulging storage units, closets and other available space.
It was time to share the joy, the collection and the history with others. That gave birth to the nonprofit Relics Museum in Rockledge.
“The way I like to say it, there is something for everyone,” Rensing said as he prepared for the opening of the museum at 495 Gus Hipp Blvd. in an industrial area of the city.
Though in an industrial-looking building, from the onset the place is inviting. Out front there are bicycle racks and a built-in tire pump. A swing hangs from an oak tree and a bench and picnic table can serve visitors waiting on the rest of their party to arrive at the museum.
Step inside the Relics Museum and immediately a sense of wonder welcomes visitors as they begin to scan the displays.
“I didn’t know this existed,” said Teresa Alvarez of Suntree, after a
Hundreds of masks will be part of the unique lure to the Relics Museum
sneak peek before the official opening. “It’s amazing. We’re going to have to spread the word. This is so unique.”
Dozens of semi-automatic weapons and handguns, an impressive collection of swords from around the world, pocketknives, Native American knives and weapons are part of the collection. Move from one section to the other and you will be awed to find taxidermy of many kinds of animals, real tomahawks, Native American masks, human scalps, headdresses and arrowheads.
Rensing has dozens of shiny Schwinn banana seat bicycles of different colors with shifters, that line a rack against one wall of the museum. It is like the ones he could not have as a child because the price was out of reach for his parents in their Seaford neighborhood on Long Island, New York. But he did get one of the less expensive banana seat bikes.
“We got the Sears, not the Schwinn,” he said.
Also among the antique weapons is a gun purchased Sept. 22, 1884 and
carried by a Wells Fargo and Company Express carriage crew, and a rifle recovered from the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Rensing’s father, a World War II veteran, brought home war trophies.
“He cherished these things,”
Rensing said as he showed some of the collection of WWII memorabilia and weapons. “When he passed, it went to me. That was part of my collecting bug.”
As a boy, Rensing once found and brought home a racoon skull to the surprise of his mother.
“Mom said, ‘Get that thing out of here,’ ” he said.
Rensing would go wherever he thought he could find something interesting to collect, even buying old bullets from a flea market.
“I didn’t have a master plan,” he said as he and his son, Travis, worked to get the museum up and running.
Rensing had to meet some extra City of Rockledge requirements because the museum is in an area zoned as industrial.
“It’s unbelievable. People are going to be very surprised and it’s right here in Rockledge. I’m in awe of what this man has collected.”
— Bonnie King
In addition to the traditional museum, the business includes the restoration of relics, artifacts and other items for sale. It offers storage for unique and classic cars. It also has a retail shop that sells artifacts, unique items, books and other informative material.
Rensing just knows he wants to share the joy of his collections and the history that comes with each item with others.
“I am not in love with any of it,” he said. “I’m not in love with material things. I wasn’t interested in history. Then I ended up being interested in history.
“The fact that we can preserve this for future generations; that’s the legacy I want to leave, a historical record for other generations.”
Bonnie King, a consultant for the tourism industry who lives on Merritt Island, had a sneak peak of the museum before it opened.
“It’s unbelievable,” she said. “People are going to be very surprised and it’s right here in Rockledge. I’m in awe of what this man has collected.”
Travis Rensing took a year off to work with his father in the museum after working in an office for 21 years.
“I saw it as a challenge,” he said. We had to design it.”
Rockledge City Council member Michael Cadore Sr. had the opportunity to visit the museum.
“It is absolutely amazing to have this in our city,” he said.
The Relics Museum is located at 495 Gus Hipp Blvd. in Rockledge.

ONE PASSION TWO MUSICIANS
ONE COUNTY
TWO ACTS
SHARI YEOMANS MARY BUCK
Shari Yeomans remembers a moment back at Merritt Island High School when she knew that she would become a musician. She played the flute for the Mustangs’ symphony orchestra and the marching band. She also was a member of the Mustang Corral, singing in the chorus.
Merritt Island was a state powerhouse in football and state championships were the goal each year.
“Mr. Walters was my music teacher,” said Yeomans, a 1976 graduate of Merritt Island High School, who will turn 67 in July. “He was so cool. Mr. Walters would stop us in the middle of song and he would say, ‘Shari, I want you to hit a Low C. And, I want you to hit it with bravado.’ That’s something that probably only a musician would understand.’’
Being put on the spot at a young age was something that Yeomans relished. There was no such thing as stage fright for a girl who moved from Long Island, New York to Merritt Island just before the age of 10 in 1968. Her mother had remarried and her stepfather, Harry Frazier, had taken a job at Northrup Grumman.
Yeomans started surfing, thanks to her brother Richard.
“The 10-foot Hobie (surfboard) was so much bigger than me,’’ Yeomans joked. “The cool boys in high school surfed; all the cute boys were out on the water.’’
Yeomans sings and plays the guitar for Blue Moon Rising, a popular band in Brevard County. Yeomans brought Blue Moon Rising to Florida three years ago after it had thrived on Long Island for five years. She is the lone performer from the group’s New York days.
“We play some original music and we play mostly classic rock, blues and some popular tunes,’’ said Yeomans, a Cape Canaveral resident. “We try to keep it updated. I love Janis Joplin, Bonnie Rait and Tina Turner. That kind of style. I’m thinking about adding the flute to some songs.’’
“You’ve got to have a passion for everything that brings you joy.’’ Shari Yeomans
Evens Colas is the lead guitarist for Blue Moon Rising. He’s originally from Haiti, with a Reggae background after touring with national acts. Colas owns Paradise Recording, a recording studio.
Joe Zapano is a bass player, who played with Rick Derringer. Derringer was known for hits such as “Hang on Sloopy” and “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.’’ Zapano also played for Dr. Hook.
Joseph Luley is the drummer. He toured for a while and also played the drums for Karalyn (Woulas) and the Dawn Patrol, a popular local band.
Don’t call Mary Buck a musician. She’s much more than that.
Buck is a surfer, golfer, gymnast, teacher … and a musician. She even crochets from time to time.
“Activity and variety is the spice of life,’’ said Buck, a native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who with her husband, Jesse Frack, splits her time between Melbourne and New Jersey. “You have to have enough of it to keep it interesting. You’ve got to keep moving.’’
The husband and wife team known as Frax perform regularly at El Mojito in downtown Melbourne almost every Friday night from November until the end of May. That’s when they go back to New Jersey for the summer and fall. Frack plays the guitar and Buck sings, plays the guitar, the bass guitar, the drums and almost every other musical instrument from time to time. She’s a whirlwind of activity.
Buck turned 71 on March 19.
“We met at 19 and dated for 4½ years,’’ said Buck, who competed as a gymnast and graduated from Trenton State College in New Jersey. “Jesse asked to marry me after three weeks. I wasn’t ready for that. Five years later, I asked him to marry me. I got married at 25. I never dated anyone else.’’
“Activity and variety is the spice of life. You have to have enough of it to keep it interesting. You’ve got to keep moving.’’
Mary Buck
Frax plays songs from almost every musical genre, whether it be rhythm and blues, rock, jazz, metal or country. The duo also like to play at open mics throughout the area, including Social Distance on Wednesday night in Satellite Beach.
Buck’s father, Harry Buck, was instrumental in sharing his love of music with his daughter. His stage name was Bucky Harris.
“My father was a lifetime jazz musician,’’ said Buck, who loves to surf at High Tower in Satellite Beach.
“He’d have 40 to 60 students studying and playing six days a week if he wasn’t playing somewhere himself. I never asked to be a musician. If my father had been a carpenter, I’d know how to use a hammer, saw and a drill.’’
That solid musical foundation led to her versatility on stage. “I always dreamed about being a musician,’’ Buck said “But, not as a starry-eyed weekend musician. I took lessons from my father. He was so knowledgable. By the age of 13, I had already gone through three Mel Bay music books.’’
It became a career where she would tour, play 29 nights in a row, with many of those musical gigs becoming doubles.
“I’ve got some cool cats,’’ said Yeomans, who works in activities and recreation for The Terrace at Courtenay Springs, a nursing home on Merritt Island. “We like to play at Earl’s Hideaway in Sebastian and we’re a mainstay at Island Time in Cocoa Beach. They like us there.’’
Yeomans studied both recreation and horticulture at Suffolk Community College’s Riverhead Campus on Long Island after returning to New York.
“I love gardening and I worked for a wholesale nursery for a while,” Yeomans said. “I love roses. Who doesn’t love roses.”
Yeomans has a simple secret for remaining young at heart.
“You’ve got to have a passion for everything that brings you joy,’’ Yeomans said. “You need to take care of yourself, mentally and physically. And, stay out of trouble. I love singing and being a part of the music scene. There’s such a beautiful feeling you get while performing. It’s a high and a joy and a feel-good experience.’’ r
The couple covered a lot of miles during their 20s and 30s. They lived in Santa Barbara, California for a seven-year stretch.
It wasn’t always California living. She remembers a 10week musical run in Idabel, Oklahoma at the age of 32 when her first born, a son named Adam, was 1. She later had two daughters, Sara and Dana.
“Music to me is a living,’’ Buck said.
“My passion has always been something else. I coached gymnastics for 48 years.’’
Buck still thinks about her childhood and the nights when she would wake up at 3 a.m. to have hot chocolate with her father after he played a show with his Big Band Orchestra.
“My father was such a straight-laced and wonderful human being,’’ Buck said. “It’s ironic that there are 88 keys on the piano and he died at the age of 88.’’ r

The U.S. Constitution promotes veteran

He’s a gray-bearded retiree and Army veteran of the Vietnam War who does not own a fishing pole or golf clubs nor have a need or want for them.
But Bill Kinstler has what he wants in his retirement — tools of every kind that have been the constant implements of his hobby and fascination since he was a teenager.
“I’ve been working with tools since I was a kid,” he said.
Kinstler used his experience and love of working with tools when he embarked on the project of building The Constitution Truck. It is a unique-looking vehicle designed to raise appreciation for the United States Constitution.
The truck is a 1947 Ford COE (Cab Over Engine) model, powered by a 1960-era Ford 427 engine. It has a Lincoln Town Car front suspension and a custom-made frame.
What stands out most about this truck is that it is painted with the Stars and Stripes and the U.S. Constitution.
“A local artist painted the truck,” Kinstler said. “There are no vinyl graphics on it. Building this truck has been a long therapeutic journey for me. It never feels like work, instead, it resembles more of a passion project.”
Kinstler was quick to reveal his reason for building this truck. “The mission of the truck’s paint job is to fuel widespread awareness and appreciation for the United States Constitution,” he said.
Kinstler’s truck bed also displays various military insignia, notably the POW flag and the insignia of the Army’s 199th Infantry Brigade, which served in the Vietnam War.
“The 199th Insignia holds personal resonance for me as I proudly wore that patch during my service in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969,” Kinstler said.
Kinstler moved to Brevard County in
the early 1980s.
“I left Erie, Pennsylvania in my rearview mirror,” he said. “And I never looked back.”
Kinstler is comfortable working with almost any kind of tool. “I’ve always worked as a mechanic, mostly on cars and boats,” he said. “When I moved to Florida, I worked at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). My most memorable job was working for
in my rearview mirror.”
— Bill Kinstler
a subcontractor at KSC. Working on the launch pads and various buildings during the Space Shuttle days was quite an adventure.”
Kinstler receives constant positive feedback from everyone who sees the truck. “People are quite taken by it,” he said. “I want people to see the truck as a symbol of our country and what it stands for. For some, it’s an educational experience. For others, especially those who served in the
military and Vietnam, it’s a reminder of what we served and fought for.”
Kinstler exhibits the truck at various car and truck shows, whenever possible. He will also show the truck for special events whenever his schedule permits.
“I’ll show and exhibit the truck whenever possible,” Kinstler added.
“I want people to see it through their own lens, not just mine. So far, I’m happy with the feedback I get from
it. If it helps people appreciate what our Constitution stands for and what the veterans who served and died for, then all the work that has gone into it has been well worth it.”
Anyone interested in learning more about Kinstler and The Constitution Truck and to arrange for an exhibition anywhere in Brevard County, can contact him through his website, which is full of photos, at theconstitutiontruck.com

Do you have all your special friends and family members surrounding you? Why not send your folks from the North a copy of the 2025 Boomer Guide as a subtle hint that it’s time to move to Florida and get started living vibrantly.
Living vibrantly means choosing a place to live that is low or no maintenance. It’s time to let others mow the grass and clear plugged toilets.
The Space Coast is the perfect place to enjoy your Golden Years. These days, boomers have no interest in going quietly into their retirement years, and don’t call them senior citizens, even if they have reached the magical Medicare age.
The Space Coast has an extensive medical community, with many providing services within the walls of carefree communities, with a plan for aging in place so you never have to relocate again.
Listing information changes from time to time. If you have a change or notice a wrong number, call us at 321-242-1235 and we will update it in our database and in our next issue.
