As 2026 dawns, we move ahead with doing what we love to do — bringing you the stories that are informative, useful and entertaining.

And, as we move into the new year, we’ll also look for ways to improve and bring you new features and interesting stories. However, we will continue with some of the series of stories that you have told us you like to read.

In this edition, you will find a story of a fight and resilience to survive the harsh conditions, isolation, constant interrogation and torture endured by a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Mike Lane of Melbourne was shot down on his first mission in Vietnam and held at the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison.

As usual, we have more stories about veterans, including one who is an author.

I have enjoyed reading the stories about hobbies our writers bring us, as I hope you have. In this edition of Senior Life, we wrote about the game of chess. Players are passionate about their game and go to different locations to play.

We have been bringing you Travel Time, a feature that tells you about day trips or short overnight or weekend trips within the state. In this edition, we tell you about Florida Caverns State Park, which is a longer drive that requires an overnight trip. However, it is one that is well worth the drive, if you ever wanted to experience going into a cavern.

When St. Mark’s Episcopal Church was built in Cocoa, most of the parishioners came by boat on the Indian River. The church held its first service on Christmas Eve in 1886. This is the sixth feature on 19th century churches in Brevard County.

Preparations are already underway for the This Magic Moment Senior Expo & Valentine’s Party at the Nyami Nyami River Lodge at the Brevard Zoo. The Expo includes the ever-popular vow renewal and great love stories.

We share one of those love stories in this edition of Senior Life. We’ll have others in the February edition.

Seashell Festival brings exhibitors from Florida, across the country

BY R. NORMAN MOODY So, you have been to the beach many times and picked up seashells that you thought were pretty or interesting.

If you go to the same beach, chances are that you find the same types of shells each time.

To enjoy seeing seashells from around the world, a seashell festival might also be the place to go.

The Astronaut Trail Seashell Club will present the 45th annual Space Coast Seashell Festival from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 17 and 18 at the Wickham Park Community Center at 2815 Leisure Way in Melbourne.

“This is our big event of the year,” said Suzy Kedzierski, a member of the Astronaut Trail Seashell Club.

Kedzierski said exhibitors will bring shells collected from around the world.

They will have artistic displays that will exhibit prized and unusual shells.

There is also a scientific exhibit that will share information on the types of shells and where they come from.

“It’s an opportunity to learn,” she said. “If they’ve only been to the beaches and have not seen seashells from around the world, they can learn about shells.”

For those visitors to the festival who want to take home some shells, there will be a vendor area, where

they can purchase jewelry and crafts made of shells. Thousands of specimen shells for collectors and crafters will be on sale.

There will be hands-on activities for children in the Kids’ Corner.

“We want to engage the future scientists,” Kedzierski said. “It’s a fun activity for the whole family.”

More than 60 vendors and exhibitors from across the country, as far away as the state of Washington, will participate. More than 3,000 visitors are expected during the two-day festival.

If you have ever wondered if you have a rare shell, experts at the festival will be available to identify it.

“We have beautiful shells on our beaches,” said B.J. Shouppe, who chairs the festival. “Until you go to the festival, you cannot imagine the thousands and thousands of shells, their formation and their colors.”

The Space Coast Seashell Festival is the first one of the year of those held elsewhere in the state.

Admission is free.

“Once they come, they say, ‘we’re going to see you next year,’ ” Shouppe said.

The Astronaut Trail Seashell Club meets from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month. The club often has speakers, programs and raffles at its meetings.

Pastor shares his heart and faith through books

Almost every morning, Dennis Taylor, the senior pastor of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Titusville, rises early to capture his words and wisdom in books.

“In the last third of my life, I want to encourage people,” he said, citing his passion.

Taylor accomplishes this from the pulpit and through the 10 books he has written. His easy-going and approachable manner is evident.

“God loves to take our weaknesses and turn them into our greatest joys,” he said. “When I was young, you would never have found me reading a book, much less writing one. I feared speaking before a group.”

His writings are a mix of devotionals and small chapter books. “ ‘Man Up’ is dedicated to men.

It challenges them to step up to the plate of service and accountability,” he said.

The cover of another book, “Surrendered,” shows two oxen yoked together. Taylor said this illustrates going from stressed to blessed and having the best life yoked to Christ, as he helps bear our burdens.

David Rogers of Titusville was particularly impressed by Taylor’s book, “Say it Again: For the One in the Front Row.” “Dennis Taylor has the life experience and maturity to speak into the lives of all ages with his books.

Chess still popular as niche activity throughout Space Coast

BY MIKE GAFFEY Viera Chess Club members are passionate about their favorite game.

They don’t move their pawns, rooks, bishops and knights just anywhere.

Some members play chess in west Melbourne, Palm Bay, Cocoa and, most recently, they have brought their hobby to Publix Super Market at the Addison Center in Viera.

Part of the Brevard Chess Club, the group started meeting at the Publix a few months ago after searching for a public venue where they could play for free, according to Suntree resident Arthur Suggs said.

Players also meet for Thursday night tournaments at Panera Bread at 245 Palm Bay Road NE in West Melbourne, at Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Central Library at 308 Forrest Ave. in Cocoa from 1 to 5 p.m. each Sunday, and at Nocturne Tea House at 4700 Babcock St. NE, Unit 2 in Palm Bay starting at 2 p.m. each Sunday.

“People come from Orlando and the Miami area,” said Suggs, the tournament director and a member of the Brevard Chess Board of Directors.

“People will travel for chess.”

Publix at the Addison Center in Viera has an unusual two-for-one special on Monday nights.

Visitors can shop for groceries and play chess.From 7 to 9 p.m. each Monday, as many as 20 chess fans gather at the supermarket’s secondfloor dining area to play the popular, centuries-old board game. Hosted by the Viera Chess Club, meetings at the supermarket at 7655 Stadium Parkway are free and open to all age

“They’re cool with it,” Suggs said of Publix management. “We’re supporting their business and Publix is supporting the community.”

At Publix, players face off in timed, five-minute games. Suggs will fill in if there’s an odd number of players. He recently took on an 8-year-old player without an opponent and “got beaten mercilessly.”

“One of our top players, Bob

Wilcox, is a senior who just turned 71,” Suggs added. “He’s in the top 50 in America, according to one of the ratings.”

At a recent tournament, Greg Gurden of Malabar brought his 9-year-old son Blake for a night of chess play.

“We’ve moved around a lot, so I’m trying to find him something steady so he can make some friends and stay in one place for more than a year,” said Gurden, an engineer at

L3Harris who moved his family from North Carolina to Brevard County in October.

The upstairs playing site is quiet enough for games and occasionally lures new players, Suggs said.

“People will come up here and have dinner and they haven’t played chess in years,” Suggs said. “And they say, ‘Hey, I want to play chess,’ and they’ll get back in the game.”

‘50 Ways to Leave Your Lover’ — Paul Simon

Paul Simon, in partnership with heavenly voiced Art Garfunkel, established himself as a major recording force during the 1960s.

When Simon and Garfunkel went their separate ways in 1970, each continued as a solo act.

While Garfunkel recorded a few successful albums, Simon consistently outperformed his old friend, especially with “Still Crazy After All These Years.” The solo LP reached No. 1 on Billboard. It is from this disc that “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” came, following such previous hits as “Mother and Child Reunion” and “Loves Me Like a Rock.”

In 1975, Simon and his first wife Peggy Harper called it quits after six years of marriage. One day, Simon had their three-year-old son Harper at his Manhattan apartment and he was trying to teach the lad how to rhyme words.

Simon’s enjoyable endeavors ended up working their way into “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” a masterfully crafted piece of storytelling. Here, Simon presents a snapshot of the tale as a dialogue, almost as a scene from a movie, as we witness his protagonist rushing from

the ruins of a marriage into a (hopefully) better situation this time around.

Unlike numerous country classics, Simon’s creation of a divorce song doesn’t get bogged down with self pity or overwrought reflection.

One can almost imagine the New Yorkborn musical poet slyly winking as his rhyming list unfolds without a trace of viciousness or callousness.

BY SUSAN M. HOUTS Virtual reality, once associated primarily with gaming and entertainment, is now being used as a tool in physical, occupational and speech therapy settings throughout Brevard County.

Therapy providers in freestanding clinics, assisted living communities and rehabilitation centers are incorporating VR systems into treatment plans to support movement, cognitive engagement and communication goals.

One such system, OmniVR, is

designed specifically for this type of rehabilitation. The technology uses a 3D camera and computer system to capture a patient’s movements and place them into interactive virtual environments.

“Patients enjoy the interaction and the immediate and measurable feedback,” Rivers said. “This keeps patients engaged longer because they can use the numbers to track progress.”

Another benefit is that the VR system can be used with patients who are standing, seated or using mobility aids, making it adaptable across a wide range of abilities.

While the technology may be new, the goals of therapy remain the same.

Amanda Taylor, an occupational therapist at Royal Oaks, said people often get the details of therapy options confused.

“For example, we are educating people all the time that occupational therapy is not about getting or keeping employment,” she said. “And that speech therapy is more than speaking.

It helps with language, swallowing, cognition and all other forms of communication.”

While physical therapy focuses on improving strength, mobility and balance, occupational therapy helps individuals gain or adapt skills needed for daily living, such as dressing, grooming, cooking or managing fine motor tasks.

As the technology in health care becomes more widely available, its presence in Brevard’s therapy settings continues to grow. Clinicians emphasize that VR does not replace hands-on therapy or professional expertise, but serves as an additional tool to enhance engagement and therapeutic outcomes. With its increasing adoption, virtual reality is becoming a practical component of modern rehabilitation rather than a novelty. It reflects ongoing innovation in how therapy services are delivered and how they will be delivered in the future. SL

Veterans help bring history to life with the Traveling Trunk program

Artifacts and equipment from military eras and past wars can be such great props and tools in teaching students about the United States Armed Forces.

It is what military veterans associated with the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center often use when they have speaking engagements at schools, for scout groups or other youth organizations.

I have seen some of the veterans speak to a classroom full of students.

They make it so much more interesting for the children when they open the trunk of props and the students can pick up some of the items and examine them closely.

The Brevard Veterans Memorial

Center Traveling Trunk program brings a virtual mini museum in a wheeled case so students can have a hands-on experience. It helps bring history to life in schools, libraries, other museums or youth groups.

The program consists of a series of trunks, each focused on a specific war. The trunk contains items that would have been commonly used by

troops during that time in the nation’s history.

Students can use the contents for research and as hands-on educational resources that might pique a young person’s interest in history.

When Dean Schaaf, the president of the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center, can speak to a youth group, he uses the Traveling Trunk program whenever possible.

“They can get hands-on,” he said.

“The teachers feel that the students get more out of it. I can show it if I am talking about the Civil War. There are trunks for the Civil War, World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. Trunks might contain uniforms,

helmets, hats, canteens and many other items that students can pick up and even try on.

Ed Pingston, who brought the idea of the Traveling Trunk to the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center, is the curator for the program.

The trunks are generally checked out by veterans. However, teachers also often check out the trunks, which they can keep for a week or longer unless someone else is waiting for it.

Anyone can check out and use the trunk as a teaching tool or exhibit at a school, youth or civic group.

Veteran recounts how Coast Guard was essential to Vietnam War effort

BY JON SAYERS Brevard author Paul C. Scotti’s eyes have seen sights that must be shared, including those reflected in his third book, “Coast Guard Action in Vietnam.”

As a child, Scotti discovered passions that have driven his entire life.

“I just loved World War II movies,” he said. “And I wanted to protect our country, our flag.”

Enlisting in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, Scotti could never have imagined the future awaiting him.

“The Air Force needed medics, so I became an X-ray technician in Korea,” he said. “But I wanted to work with weapons and I wondered — faced with war, would I fight or run?”

After four years in the Air Force, Scotti enlisted again, this time in the U.S. Coast Guard. The New Yorker soon found himself on the inky-black Asian seas at night manning the mortar/machine gun combo mounted on the bow of a Coast Guard cutter.

Battles were fierce, as he recounts in his book. And among his decorations, Scotti said he is proud to have received South Vietnam’s Cross of Gallantry.

“Coast Guard Action in Vietnam” is Scotti’s third book and it took more than 16 years to write as the slow process of declassification of key information was critical to credibility.

Meanwhile, Scotti and his wife Liz had each said they asked God to locate their life partner. They were

introduced to one another while Scotti was training in Oregon.

“God brought me Liz,” he said.

Just 32 days after meeting, Paul and Liz were married, and that was 58 years ago.

Liz Scotti takes pride in being thoroughly involved in Paul’s career, and the love in their Palm Bay home is just palpable.

As his career progressed, Scotti was promoted to public affairs officer for the Coast Guard and found himself dealing with events that made national news — the Challenger disaster and twice in Tampa Bay — the Blackthorn collision and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse.

Lives were lost, questions were asked and Scotti’s deep insight and knowledge were often needed. His final Coast Guard appointment took him to Los Angeles as a liaison for the U.S. Coast Guard to the film and TV industries.

Suntree music teacher thriving again following a stroke

BY CHRIS BONANNO Loretta Fox, a well-known, longtime music instructor suffered a stroke in August in her backyard.

The 86-year-old Suntree resident is thriving and back doing what she loves — teaching music to children and adults. Fox is the owner/instructor of Creative Music & Art Center in Suntree.

Fox has owned Creative Music & Art Center for 25 years and has taught generations of Brevard County music students, some who, no doubt, have gone on to bigger stages. She also served as an elementary school teacher in Wisconsin for more than 30 years.

Fox’s 90-year-old neighbor saw when she fell after suffering the stroke. That neighbor tried to get her up off the ground, but could not muster the strength, so she summoned her daughter, who called 9-11.

Paramedics were able to get her to Holmes Regional Medical Center within the essential time to get the treatment she needed to allow her the great recovery that she has had.

Fox has managed a fantastic recovery following the stroke thanks to the quick thinking of a neighbor and the assistance of Brevard County Fire Rescue and Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center personnel.

“I remember trying to talk in the ambulance, but my words wouldn’t come out,” Fox said. “I could think, but I couldn’t talk.”

Fox went back to Holmes to thank the medical personnel who

treated her following the stroke.

The doctors and nurses were pleased to see her again.

“We’re still going,” Fox said.

“We’re still in action, so I’m happy to be able to continue. I did cut my schedule in half so I cut from 40 students to 20 students.”

Fox’s recovery was undoubtedly aided by the healthy habits she has engaged in.

“I’ve always been pretty healthy and I exercise a couple times a week,” she said. “… I cook my own food. I don’t do a lot of precooked meals and I guess I’m happy.”

In all, Fox marveled at her recovery, which she said included a four-day stint at Holmes following the stroke.

“It’s just amazing … that I’m up and around and feeling well,” she said.

Ravi Soni, MD, a neurohospitalist with Health First, discussed the BE FAST acronym that is used to help stroke victims. “ ‘B’ stands for balance issues, ‘E’ stands for eye changes. ‘F’ stands for facial droop, droopy face,” Soni said. “ ‘A’ stands for weakness in the arms. ‘S’ stands for slurred speech … and ‘T’ stands for time. Time, which is an essence.

“If you come into the emergency department within a certain time frame, you could be a candidate for the lifesaving treatment … it is extremely important to recognize those symptoms and come into the emergency department as soon as you recognize them.”SL

Married a month after meeting 44 years ago — couple to renew vows

BY LINDA WIGGINS Retired Navy Cmdr. Dean Schaaf proposed to his wife four days after they met. They were married a month later.

Schaaf and his wife Susan will be delighted to say “I do” once again — 44 years later.

They will be among Valentine’s Day sweethearts to renew their wedding vows at the Feb. 13 Senior Life’s Senior Expo and Valentine’s Party at the Nyami Nyami River Lodge at the Brevard Zoo. The pair connected courtesy of a trusted fellow officer when Schaaf let him know he was ready to try his hand again at lady love after having been previously married.

“We met on a blind date on Monday and I proposed on Friday,” Dean Schaaf said with a smirk.

Truth is, he took the easy way and as a “joke” left a card at Susan’s workplace that read, “Will you marry me?”

A shocked and exasperated Susan called over a witness who immediately used the written proposal evidence to nail down an immediate “I do.”

Dean and Susan Schaaf were married a month later on Sept. 7, 1981.

“Forty-four years later and he’s still the love of my life,” Susan Schaaf said.

And now they are once again ready to say, “I do,” and I’d do it all over again.

The Schaafs were married to other people before their love story began.

And when they found each other, they found their biggest cheerleaders instead.

“I fell in love with his soul, immediately,” Susan Schaaf said.

“Instant sense of safety that I never knew I never had and always craved.

I could finally exhale, relax, fully commit and give my all.”

For Susan, it was more like the heart fire of a thousand burning suns.

Florida Caverns State Park offers fascinating visit, lots of activities

BY EMILY WARNER Tucked away in the small town of Marianna, Florida, nestled less than 20 miles from the Alabama and Georgia border, is the unique and enchanting Florida Caverns State Park.

Full of history and natural wonder, visiting the park makes for an unforgettable and enjoyable trip.

If you choose to take a guided tour of the caverns, you can expect incredible surroundings, friendly guides and up-close views of stalactites and stalagmites. You’ll also discover fascinating facts and rich historical stories, including the effects previous hurricanes have had on the area.

After you have traversed the underground caverns, you won’t want to miss exploring the rest of the park.

For walkers and hikers, there’s an array of nature trails to choose from, ranging from 1.1 to 6.8 miles. Many also are open for cyclists and equestrians.

Don’t worry if you work up a sweat as you’re busy having fun since there’s also a swimming area. Blue Hole Spring is a picturesque spot to relax, with vibrant blue water surrounded by luscious trees and a grassy hill. Visitors can cool off in the water, soak up some sun and enjoy a lovely picnic.

If you’re interested in continuing your aquatic adventures, the park also allows paddling and boating (for smaller boats).

Although it is not recommended that you travel south under the bridge once you exit the boat ramp, visitors are encouraged to enjoy a leisurely float down the water while keeping a

Although the state park is about a five- or six-hour drive from Melbourne, the trip is well worth it. Take it from Brevard resident Bradley Cox, who recently visited the park.

“I definitely recommend this spot,” Cox said. “The light displays were vibrant, our tour guide had some really corny jokes and there was even a sick bonus cave!”

Not to mention, with on-site camping as well, visitors can spend an entire weekend.

The park is open from 8 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year, with cave tours being offered seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST. The park charges a $5 vehicle fee for park entrance.

Each year, Zonta Clubs worldwide celebrate the life and legacy of Zontian and famed aviator pilot Amelia Earhart. Earhart was a member of Zonta, joining the Boston club in 1928 and later transferring to the New York City club. Soon after her tragic disappearance in 1937, Zonta established the Amelia Earhart Fellowships.

Despite extensive searches, no trace of her plane was ever found.

The Amelia Earhart Fellowships have grown to $10,000 fellowships annually awarded to 30 women pursuing Ph.D./ doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences. Since the program’s inception in 1938, Zonta has awarded 1,794 Amelia Earhart Fellowships, totaling more than $12.2 million to 1,365 women from 80 countries.

Susan Blakeslee’s earliest memories include activities at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Cocoa Village that her great-grandmother helped found.

A seventh-generation Floridian, Blakeslee gives tours of the 1886 preserved church and proudly shows the stained-glass window to memorialize Emma Stewart.

“My grandmother told me she picnicked on Oleander Point to raise money to build the church,” she said.

Blakeslee recalls as a young girl having a fold-up pew kneeler noisily dropping during a service, hitting her ankle.

“My mother rubbed my shin,” she said.

The church, at 40 Church St., was launched at a meeting held June 2, 1878 on a Rockledge porch with Florida Bishop John Freeman Young and Dr. William H. Carter of Holy Cross Church of Sanford. Carter served as its first once-monthly visiting pastor. The Right Rev. Young is best known for translating the German “Silent Night” into English.

A church building became possible in 1884, when Lucy Boardman, who wintered in Sanford and visited the area, donated $3,000 to build two Episcopal churches along the Indian River on donated land.

“It was built with local wood installed by local settlers and I think it’s the oldest public building still in use in Cocoa. We’ve grown, but our core stays the same,” Blakeslee said.

The first service was held Christmas Eve 1886, although construction of the Gothic carpenter board and batten building wasn’t complete. Its Christmas tree was the first seen in Cocoa, according to historians.

Originally named St. Michael’s, the church name was changed to St. Mark’s to recognize support provided by St. Mark’s Church in West Orange, New Jersey. In a 1925 renovation, nearly all the original wood, known as Merritt Island mahogany, remained intact. Stucco was added for a Mediterranean look.

The Emma Cecilia Thursby Memorial Fellowship Hall was added in 1942. About that time, when Grace Church, a Black Episcopal church on Merritt Island closed, its members

were invited to join St. Mark’s.

St. Mark’s Parish Day School, now St. Mark’s Episcopal Academy, was added in 1956. It currently serves 77 students from prekindergarten through sixth grade.

In 2021, Robert Al Glover memorial outdoor chapel offered a pier and tables/benches.

“Our school children use it to study biology. We have a fleet of kayaks and hope to get an underwater camera,” Blakeslee said. The chapel is also used for weddings and memorial services.

St. Mark’s has about 100 worshipers at its two services. At 8 a.m., the traditional Rite 1 is performed. At 10:30 a.m., Rite II with liturgical music and hymns is offered. It has online viewing.

Cocoa Beach Senior Center is the new name, the service is the same

BY ELLEN MONGAN Have you ever met someone who, when you asked their age, you doubted they were telling the truth?

Before you could shout “Pinocchio,” they added, “Do you want to know my secret to staying young?” You nodded eagerly. Everyone wants to discover how to age gracefully and look and feel young forever.

Studies show that it is by living a healthy, happy lifestyle that includes eating right, exercising, pursuing learning and surrounding yourself with positive people.

Cocoa Beach Senior Center — which until recently was the Freedom 7 Senior Community Center — is the ideal place to put this wisdom into action. Whether you’re interested in exercise classes, group activities or even a book club, this is the place.

“The name changed,” said Peter Cunningham, the president of the Senior Center. “We haven’t changed much else.”

Cunningham said that the name Freedom 7 was appropriate through the years but, after the school bearing the same name reopened, it was time to change. It wasn’t until this year, however, that the change was made.

“We wanted to become better known in Cocoa Beach,” he said The Cocoa Beach Senior Center is open to everyone. You do not need to be a member to participate in the activities. However, membership includes discounted class rates and access to its newsletter. It is $25 ($40 for a couple) per year.

The Cocoa Beach Senior Center is located inside the Cocoa Beach Country Club.

“The city has been good to us to let us use (the Country Club),” Cunningham said.

The hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

They are staffed by a part-time executive director Nicole SahrDowney and several volunteers.

Health professionals each January emphasize need for blood donation

BY AMY TREMANTE January 1970 was proclaimed National Blood Donor Month by President Richard Nixon to honor voluntary blood donors and encourage new donors to join. The observance continues every January to thank America’s blood donors and to inspire even more people to join in donating.

Technology can do many amazing things in our modern world, but blood cannot be manufactured. Every donation has the power to save up to three lives, and it can only be given by generous donors.

The 1970s were the foundation era, focused on building public understanding of the critical need for donated blood. The 1980s saw a safety revolution in which safety protocols to donations and testing procedures were implemented.

Staying at home vs. moving to assisted living: Benefits and challenges for seniors As people age, one of the most important decisions they face is where to live. Some seniors choose to remain in their own homes, while others transition to an assisted living community. Both options have advantages and challenges — understanding them can help families make an informed and compassionate choice.

REMAINING AT HOME (aging in place) Benefits:

1. Familiarity and comfort — Staying in a long-time home allows seniors to remain surrounded by cherished memories, familiar routines and a sense of independence.

This familiarity can reduce stress and provide emotional stability.

2. Personal freedom — Seniors who can manage daily activities with minimal help enjoy the freedom to set their own schedules, decorate their space as they like and maintain lifestyle preferences without restrictions.

3. Community connections — Aging in place often means

staying close to friends, neighbors, local clubs and faith organizations, which can be vital for emotional well-being.

Challenges:

1. Safety concerns — Older homes might not be equipped for mobility issues, increasing the risk of falls.

Renovations for ramps, grab bars and stair lifts can be expensive.

My father explained: “That’s an old folks’ home — where people without a family or money are sent.” I remember the house was located on Good Hope Road.

Sometimes people comment about us seniors with, “You’re like a person off the street.” They may be commenting about our clothing (how we look), our thrift habits, our reluctance to spend and not being with it. Choose to get with the times.

You are who you are due to the time of your life. You are special in every way. There is no one else like you. It’s your time. As you begin a new year, don’t look down, look up and look ahead! Recently, we have been bombarded with Progressive Insurance TV commercials showing a professorlife coach trying to prevent clients from being like their parents. Our first teachers were our parents offering life scripts. We carry many lessons from those early years.

I was a little boy during World War II when I learned to eat many strange things. At the butcher shop, my mother talked the butcher out of soup bones and ox tails. We ate calf tongue, liver and other meats. Spam was a delicacy. Ration coupons were a valued currency. I watched my mother eat chicken legs and pig tails. Now, I can eat anything — even expired food.
