Macaulay Building RENOVATED

On September 15, Headmaster Hal Hannaford was joined by all Senior School students and guests of honour to officially re-open the school’s Macaulay Building, which had recently undergone extensive renovations.

The $1.2M renovation project included a complete redesign of the lobby and classrooms, creation of new office space and staff lounge, and the creation of new student facilities, including refurbished dressing rooms downstairs and a new Student Life Centre.

The ribbon was cut by architect (and Selwyn House parent) Susane Havelka, project sponsor (and Selwyn House Old Boy) Vince Guzzo ’86, and Selwyn House Building and Grounds Supervisor Chris Churchill.

Mr. Hannaford recalled that the project began when Coach (now Athletic Director) Mike Maurovich approached him about renovating the athletic dressing rooms downstairs. When the proposal landed on the desk of Vince Guzzo, chairman of the Facilities Committee of the Selwyn House Board of Directors, it quickly became clear that the Macaulay Building was long overdue for a more complete overhaul.

The most cost-effective approach to the project was to call in volunteers from within the school community. Vince Guzzo, Susane Havelka and Chris Churchill put in weeks of their time and expertise to complete the renovations.

“Vince is the kind of guy who gets things done,” said Mr. Hannaford.

“It’s not as if we went out and hired these people,” said Mr. Hannaford. “When you have an Old Boy, a parent and a faculty member working together and making it happen, wonderful things occur.” ■
