WRESTLERS win banner,championship

The Gryphon wrestling team capped an outstanding season by winning the Cadet Division at the Provincial Wrestling Championships at StCesaire on Saturday, February 25. The Gryphons also finished third in the Bantam Division.

This happened only nine days after the team won the GMAA Juvenile wrestling banner for the third time.

At the Quebec Provincial Championships, Keel Scruton, Nathan Palayew, Alex Moore and Sam Barmish each took home a gold medal. Silver medals were won by Tomas Kaufman, Eli Dannenbaum and Sam Skinner.

The February 16 victory at the GMAA Championship was not a close race, with SHS defeating Loyola 104-84. The Gryphons’ traditional rival, Khanawake Survival School, was a distant third with 68 points.

Leading the way for the Gryphons were gold medalists Nathan Palayew, Sam Skinner, Alex Moore and David De Cotiis.

Eli Dannenbaum, Nick ChabanneSalbaing, Sam Barmish, Lias Borshan, Stephan Smirnov, Jordan Samberg and Yanni Metrakos won silver medals.

Selwyn House was ranked in first place going into the championships after an undefeated dual-meet regular season, and kept the momentum going into the finals. ■

Juvenile HOCKEY takes Meagherchampionship

On Saturday night, January 28, the Selwyn House Juvenile Hockey squad placed its name among the high school hockey elite on the giant banner that hangs on the wall at Concordia Arena. This was the first time Selwyn has won the prestigious 42-yearold Ed Meagher Tournament.

In the championship game, Selwyn defeated host team Loyola High School 2-0 behind tournament MVP Caleb Tse-Lalonde’s goaltending. Selwyn scored early on a goal by Dan Ton-That, and then played solid hockey the rest of the way. Matt Rossy scored a late goal to secure the victory.

Selwyn started the tournament with a 6-3 victory over St Thomas High School on Friday. On Saturday, the Gryphons beat Howard S Billings High School 5-2 to earn the right to play in the final.

Besides being named tournament MVP, Tse-Lalonde was also selected as a tournament All-Star. Other tournament All-Stars from SHS were defensive standout Dave Barmish, Captain Matt Rossy and sniper Dan Ton-That at forward.

“This victory was a complete team effort as all players in the lineup contributed to the Gryphons’ success,” said Assistant Coach Bruce Maxwell. ■
