GREATNESS at Selwyn House

By Hal Hannaford, Headmaster eing good is a challenge. It requires a level of competence one can be proud of and pleased with. The reality however, is that good is not great, which means it is not good enough. In fact, good is the enemy of great. We need to be great. All of us should aspire to greatness, and I believe that everyone associated with Selwyn House shares that aspiration. Simply put: Don’t be good, be great.

A little self-awareness is required, along with a heavy dose of self-reflection. Each of us needs to look at our own personal and professional situation, and honestly discover where we are good and where we are great. Then, there has to be a personal reflection on how to achieve greatness.

Earlier this year, I asked every member of our faculty to review our Definition of a Master Teacher that was completed in preparation for the Master Teacher Workshop in New York this past February. It is an important list. Every faculty and staff member at Selwyn House was reminded of the benefit of reading through the list and determining where they stand on each of the points. Humility is important, as it allows anyone to understand the discipline required to reach the level of greatness by becoming a Master Teacher. I should also add that each of these points relates to all of our coaches. Athletics and coaching must be coordinated in a way that will support and add to academic excellence.

Our four teachers who attended the workshop (Claudine Martel, Matt McCarney, Brad Moffat, and Roman Pylat), each in their own personal way, epitomize the concept of Master Teacher. They will be the first to explain they are not perfect, that they make plenty of mistakes and face the intense insecurities that all great teachers face; but they are masters of their professions. They were wonderful representatives of Selwyn House while in New York, and they were so impressive with the work they completed.

At Selwyn House, everyone who is a part of our community must go through the same self-evaluation process.

This includes students, teachers, Old Boys, parents, and friends. Selwyn House needs everyone to be great, whether you teach, coach, support, administer, volunteer, maintain, cook, clean, process, or assist.

This past year we have started the conversation with many about greatness. We have discussed ways to become great, both from an individual point of view and an entire school perspective. That is what professional development is all about. It is quite personal, and our own personal learning plan is required to reach higher and higher levels. A striving for greatness needs to be an obsession. And obsessed we will become.

Over the past couple of months, we have discussed seriously: greatness in athletics, why curriculum mapping is necessary for curriculum and pedagogical greatness, the connection between greatness and professional development,

greatness with French and the vibrant Québec culture, the role of teacher evaluation in creating and maintaining greatness, the physical environment and its relation to greatness, greatness through experiential education, the role of the arts, and even more mundane thoughts on dress code and staff rooms. These are reflections that we hope create valid discourse. At the core, we need to remember: good is the enemy of greatness, and at Selwyn House we will always battle this enemy.

SHS gets HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

elwyn House will soon have its own home field for soccer, football, rugby and baseball, thanks to a publicprivate agreement between the school and the City of Westmount.

Immediately after La Fête nationale, workers broke ground on a $700,000 project to fully renovate the Westmount Athletic Grounds, located behind Westmount High School on Ste. Catherine Street.

Selwyn House has used the location for field sports for nearly a century, but the site was in dire need of restoration.

Selwyn House will pay for the renovations and subsequent maintenance through private donations to the school. Use of the facility will be shared between Selwyn House and Westmount High, as well as by the City of Westmount for municipal recreation.

The arrengement is “a classic example of a win-win-win situation,” says Selwyn House Headmaster Hal Hannaford.

The renovated site will include a new soccer pitch with natural grass, sprinkler and drainage systems, a resurfaced racing track, new spectator stands, a new baseball diamond, a storage cabana and an electronic scoreboard that will read: “Home of the Gryphons”.

“Everyone’s happy,” Westmount Director General Duncan Campbell told The Suburban newspaper. “This project won’t cost the city a cent, and everybody’s going to get a chance to play on what will soon be one of the best playing fields in the

city.”

“In a time of severe budget constraints, this is indeed welcome news,” said Cynthia Lulham, Westmount councillor responsible for the WAG area.

The grounds should be ready for use this fall.

SELWYN HOUSE?

Why is our school called

the place of honour.”

At the same time, he inherited from his father a love of the outdoors, and was well known for his prowess in running, jumping, rowing, swimming, diving and horsemanship. His boating skills were well known to the boatmen on the river. These abilities served him well in the days of hardship and adventure of his adult life.

He came of age at time when England was torn by bitter political dissension. He developed a skill as a mediator between friends who found themselves driven apart by political differences.

He had always possessed a religious inclination, and attributed his familiarity with his Bible to the early teaching of his mother. In 1834 he Bishop G.A. Selwyn entered the Anglican priesthood and became curate to the Vicar of Windsor.

A Man of Perfect Balance Among his fellow clergymen, Selwyn was often ridiculed as On April 5, 1809, George Augustus Selwyn was born in Hampstead, London, son of a noted constitutional lawyer who an idealist. On his first Sunday in the new land the Bishop threw the wrote, “ever ready to help in all difficulties. There was nothing that was pious, noble, self-denying, and generous, that my Maoris into ecstasies of delight by gathering them together and briefly addressing them in their own language. In school, it is said, “He mastered every subject that offered with unbounded astonishment. There can be no doubt that, itself to his eager and hungry mind. any men of distinction have graduated from Selwyn House School since the institution was founded in 1908. Of that number, however, probably only a few have ever known where their school gets its name.

Selwyn House students have often been told that their school’s name comes from Selwyn College at Cambridge University in England. The founder of our school, Algernon Lucas, and its second headmaster, C. C. Macaulay, both went to Selwyn College before immigrating to Canada. Hence the name “Selwyn.”

But who was the original Mr. Selwyn, for whom both institutions are named? And why is our school called “Selwyn House” rather than “Selwyn College” or simply “Selwyn School”?

welcome his message. It was a masterstroke.

As soon as his wife joined him in New Zealand, he set out upon his first great expedition to familiarize himself with the entire North Island. In five months he travelled 2,685 miles: 1,400 by ship, 397 by boat, 126 on horseback, and 762 on foot. He later completed an exploration of the South Island.

When the British Crown solicitors had first drawn up the letters patent for the new diocese of New Zealand, they had made a clerical error, proscribing its limits as stretching from 50 degrees south latitude to 30 degrees north of the equator. Bishop Selwyn was aware of the error but said nothing, knowing that it would give him much more territory in which to carry on his work among the far-flung islands of the South Pacific.

So on March 4, 1848, he set sail at the helm of his schooner to explore the seas of Melanesia. He spent the next 10 years spreading his evangelical message throughout the entire region. “I have been enabled during the last nine months,” he once wrote, “to visit, with ease and comfort, inhabited countries stretching over thirty-three degrees of latitude, or, one-eleventh part of the

circumference of the globe.”

Bishop Selwyn’s sailing skills were so impressive that one merchant seaman was quoted as saying that it almost made him a Christian and a churchman to see the Bishop bring his schooner into harbour.

He travelled without weapons among native tribes that were known to practice cannibalism. When he approached an unfamiliar island, he would first try to find out the name of the tribal chief there, and then swim ashore alone, carrying only a tomahawk. When he came ashore he would call out the chief ’s name and then present the man with the tomahawk as a gesture of peace.

He conducted services whenever and wherever he could, sometimes in a barn or loft, sometimes in a concert-hall or dancing-saloon, sometimes in a native whare, and often in the open air. The azure sky was frequently his cathedral dome, the bush-birds his choristers.

In relation to the sufferings of others he was acutely sympathetic, but where he himself was concerned, he was a perfect Spartan. He laughed his way through obstacles that to most men would have been insuperable. (Pioneer Bishop of New Zealand) In the years preceding his arrival, tribal warfare had taken a grave toll on the native population. The Bishop often stared death in the face in his encounters with the Maori.

On one occasion he entered a [village], where a chief had murdered his [own] cousin. War was instantly declared between the friends of the two parties. In a very short time the two little armies were drawn up in battle array. Bishop Selwyn interviewed the leaders, attempting to bring about a peaceful understanding.

At last the Bishop approached the

murderer, who shamelessly recited the details of his crime, and concluded the ghastly narrative by demanding: “What do you think of that?”

Nearby, the friends of the man were fingering the triggers of their rifles, and quite prepared to fire if the slightest danger threatened him. The Bishop, however, looked the man full in the face and replied: “I have no hesitation in saying that, on your own showing, you have committed the crime of which Cain was guilty when he slew his brother, Abel!”

Quivering with anger, the man sprang forward and screamed: “Say that again if you dare!” The Bishop stood without a tremor and deliberately repeated the words. The chief ’s hand tightened on his tomahawk hidden under his tartan plaid. At that critical moment, however, a great cry arose among the warriors: “The Bishop is right!

The Bishop is right!” Thereupon the guilty chief, confronted with his crime, convicted by his conscience, and deserted by his friends, slunk off, ashamed. (IBID) When war broke out between the Maori and the British, Bishop Selwyn found himself caught between the two sides. The Maori suspected him of being an instrument of a British plot to take possession of their country, while the English saw him as a native sympathizer.

Meanwhile, the European travelling dealers fanned the flames of native suspicion and spread rumours about the intentions of the missionaries.

On Sundays, the Bishop would ride from camp to camp conducting seven or eight services in the course of the day.

He was often the target of Maori snipers; British soldiers would watch from a distance, amazed at the Bishop’s courage under fire.

G.A. SELWYN Continued from previous page Despite being caught in the middle of the conflict, Bishop Selwyn also earned acclaim from both sides. “It is impossible for the rapture of praise to exceed that with which every tongue loads him,” wrote The Auckland Times.

“Fearless in the very midst of the contest, Dr. Selwyn sought to allay the heat of blood and to arrest the fury of the fight.

He was also seen bearing the wounded from the field; afterwards, unwearied, he was at the bedside of the dying. Much more than this, he was the nurse, and the surgeon, and the servant of the sick as well as their spiritual attendant.”

As much as Bishop Selwyn ministered to the suffering on both sides with Christ-like equanimity, the conflict was painful to behold, as he saw all his missionary work crumbling in savagery.

Return to England The year 1867 found Bishop Selwyn back in England, attending the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Church, where it was said that “No voice was heard with more respect, and no opinions carried greater weight than his.

His commanding figure, his finelychiselled face, his charming personality and his silver tongue stamped their indelible impress upon the Church life of the world as a result of his presence at these memorable meetings.”

Perhaps he spoke too well, for he was immediately offered the important diocese of Lichfield, in England. He immediately refused. “My heart is in New Zealand and Melanesia,” he replied.

But Queen Victoria and the Archbishop of Canterbury were not inclined to accept his refusal. On December 1, 1867, Bishop Selwyn met with the Queen in her private room at Windsor Castle, where she applied her royal powers of persuasion. “I accepted with as good a grace as I could,” he wrote, “though I felt very sorrowful, and still feel so.” He was enthroned as Bishop

of Lichfield in January 1868.

He returned to New Zealand to put his affairs in order. On October 20, 1869, when he finally bid farewell to his adopted land, all the shops in the city were closed and the streets were filled with a throng of people wishing to see Bishop Selwyn one last time. According to The Encyclopedia of New Zealand, The church of St. Paul, Auckland, was packed to the point of suffocation, and multitudes, disappointed, were turned from the doors. A carriage bearing the Bishop and his wife was drawn toward the wharf, where a huge crowd packed the shoreline waving goodbye. The press of people in the streets was so great that the horses were taken out of the shafts and the carriage drawn to the wharf by young men. The streets were decked with bunting; steamers sounded their whistles; naval vessels fired their guns.

On December 31, Selwyn arrived in England, where he immediately fell into his work as Bishop of Lichfield with his usual enthusiasm and dedication. His ministrations to the victims of the Pelsall mining disaster were remembered fondly for years after the accident.

“It may be doubted whether any one Bishop has contributed more effectively to the ecclesiastical organisation of our own time than has Bishop Selwyn,” said an Anglican Church publication.

“Whether addressing the House of Lords, speaking in Convocation, delivering charges to his own clergy, or preaching in the stately Cathedral at Lichfield, he never failed to carry conviction to the minds of his auditors.

They were invariably impressed by his transparent sincerity, his intense passion, and his evident desire to promote the well-being of others.”

In 1871, and again in 1874, he visited Canada and the United States, attending conventions, preaching special sermons, delivering addresses and playing an important part in the drawing together of the worldwide Anglican community.

“[His tours] resembled the triumphal progress of a conqueror. Everywhere he was accorded magnificent receptions. All sections of the community, dignitaries of churches, leaders in politics, princes of commerce, and captains of industry thronged to hear him.” (Pioneer Bishop of New Zealand) Eventually, his robust health began to fade, and he died on April 11, 1878.

With his family and colleagues gathered around his bed, he faded in and out of consciousness, recalling happier times in his beloved south-sea-island home.

It is well known that Bishop Selwyn’s last words were not English, but a familiar Maori phrase in which a dying native Christian says to his mourning family, “It is Light! It is Light! It is Light!”

Thus, “the valiant soul of one of England’s very greatest sons passed triumphantly away.” (IBID) In all parts of the world the most glowing tributes were paid to his memory. Pulpit, press, and platform vied with each other in commemorating the commanding virtues and distinguished excellences of one whom no difficulty had ever daunted, and the imprint of whose splendid and gracious influence must abide upon the world for ever.

G.A. SELWYN Gladstone, four-time Prime Minister of Great Britain, and Sir William Martin, first Chief Justice of New Zealand, among the pallbearers. Gladstone said of Selwyn that he “reintroduced among the Anglican clergy the pure heroic type.”

Selwyn College In 1882, Selwyn College was founded at Cambridge as a theological college and named after George Augustus Selwyn.

It is hard for us, at the beginning of the 21st century and from the perspective of a largely secularized culture, to understand the high esteem in which figures such as George Augustus Selwyn were held at the end of the 19th.

Seven years after his death, the Bishop of Winchester said of Selwyn, “I think he was the most remarkable man I ever saw.”

Sir Richard Jebb said “No one has more signally represented the educated chivalry of Christian manhood.”

When the cornerstone of the first building of Selwyn College was built, The Times of London wrote: “though he had an extraordinary combination of good qualities and powers…his goodness was the chief talent and the best thing about him.”

At the Selwyn College Jubilee in 1930, Cambridge University Chancellor and Prime Minster Stanley Baldwin said, “Selwyn was perhaps typical of much that was best in the last century. He combined four things. He was a Christian; he was a gentleman; he was a scholar and an athlete—the complete and perfect man.”

That is the man for whom Selwyn House is named. His spirit is invoked every time we speak or write the name of this school. Not just his achievements, but the man himself. His high moral character and his bottomless capacity for self-sacrifice, combined with a spirit of good humour and charity, prepared him to become one of the great men of his age, indeed, of any age. He was a truly inspirational character. He was veritas personified.

And that is the story behind “Selwyn House,” a name that has become venerated while its origins remained a mystery.

But why Selwyn 'House'?

In the Winter 1991 issue of Veritas, SHS Old Boy Dr. David Lewis ’35 shared some insights he had picked up that same year while attending a symposium at Cambridge.

Although it was founded in 1882, Selwyn College, Cambridge did not receive full accreditation as a college until 1926, Dr. Lewis discovered. In the interim, the school was known by the more modest title of “House.”

“The official terminology,” Dr. Lewis wrote, “was even more diminishing, that is, ‘Public Hostel,’ or housing for students to live in while they pursued their studies wherever they could negotiate the teaching.”

Lack of funds may have contributed to Selwyn College’s struggle for accreditation, Dr. Lewis wrote, but religion may have also been a factor. “Selwyn House must have been regarded as a sweatshop for the preparation of Anglican clergymen for the parishes of the British Isles and the Empire that Selwyn had done so much to erect.”

Where the rest of Cambridge was ecumenical, Selwyn remained a staunchly Anglican institution.

In spite of these impediments, Lewis wrote, the college continued to grow. Today, its campus boasts an elegant quadrangle, with some central buildings dating from 1893.

In 1926, the University Board of Inquiry acknowledged the existence of Selwyn as a College of Cambridge.

By this time our school here in Montreal, founded by Lucas and passed on to Macaulay, had already been in existence for eighteen years.

It had been named “Selwyn House” before there was a “Selwyn College,” and the name stuck.

CLAXTON SPEIRS MEDAL

Ted receives

y involvement in this school has restored my faith in humanity,” Ted Claxton ’73 confessed in his speech to the Founder’s Day audience on November 22.

“It’s wonderful to see a community of people who are driven by what they believe in.”

Mr. Claxton ’73 was speaking as the 2012 recipient of the Speirs Medal, which was presented in recognition of his service on the school’s Board of Directors from 1995 to 2011, where he sat as chairman for the last four years.

Describing his time on the Board as “a truly wonderful adventure,” Mr. Claxton spent most of his acceptance speech praising a number of people who contributed to the school’s success during those years, including: Mark Smith, Wendy MacDonald, John Carsley, Bryan Fitzpatrick, Jonathan Goldbloom, Martha Fitzpatrick, France Chrétien Desmarais and James McMillan.

He paid special tribute to retired Headmaster Will Mitchell, a “thoughtful and considerate” man who “had a vision and stuck to it.” Current Headmaster Hal Hannaford, he said, “has created excitement and a sense of adventure for this school, and we’re all better for it.”

Mr. Claxton served on the Board through a period of important initiatives, including the construction of the Speirs Building and renovations to the Lucas and Macaulay Buildings, and guided the school in its response to language legislation.

But, he said, the cause he felt most strongly about was his work in promoting “the importance of French in the cultural evolution of the School.” It is, he said, “key to our success.”

Board had taught him that “good leadership is all about purely human things.”

“I love this school very, very much, he said in conclusion. “There’s no reason why this can’t be one of the best schools in Canada, and one of the best schools in the world.”

Mr. Claxton received the Speirs Medal from Michael Denham, his successor as Chairman of the Board, who was first elected to the board in November of 2006. The Speirs Medal is named in memory of Dr. Robert Speirs, who served as headmaster of Selwyn House School from 1945 to 1971.

BROADWAY producer wins TONY AWARD n June 9, Adam Blanshay ’98 won a Tony Award for coproducing the hit Broadway musical comedy Kinky Boots. The play, with a score

by Cyndy Lauper, won six Tonys, including the coveted award for best musical.

Kinky Boots was adapted from a 2005 British film about a shoe factory saved by switching to the manufacture of sexy boots for drag queens. Adam was one of 28 co-producers of the play, a large but not unusual number required to stage a multi-million-dollar Broadway production.

“It was the best night of my life,” Adam told The Gazette the morning after receiving his award. “It was my lifelong

dream. So I can kind of kick that off the bucket list.”

On February 25, Adam was appointed CEO of Just for Laughs Theatricals. The highly successful comedy festival is making its foray into the theatre world, staging plays on Broadway and in London’s West End theatre district.

The company will be based in New York City and, along with the hit Kinky Boots, is producing plays in London, including A Chorus Line, Old Times with Kristin Scott Thomas, and Merrily We Roll Along. Future Broadway projects include a production of Bullets over Broadway.

Adam’s other Broadway credits include the revival of Evita starring Ricky Martin, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying with Daniel Radcliffe, The Scottsboro Boys, Catch Me If You Can and Jerusalem. In addition to his six Tony nominations, the McGill graduate has also been nominated for a Grammy Award.

The Just For Laughs Group creates comedy festivals around the globe, dozens of hours of TV, and operates concert tours.

It is behind the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, which this summer will celebrate its 31st anniversary.

ZUCKERMAN film wins double prize at WHISTLER estless, a film by Leo Zuckerman 2009, won first place in a video competition that was part of the 2013 World Ski and Snowboard Film Festival, held in Whistler, B.C. April 1221. Leo won $15,000 for first place, plus $2,000 for winning the event’s People’s Choice Award.

Competing films had to be shot and edited within seven days. The mountaintop ski scenes were shot by Leo on a Sony FS700, with two other cameramen shooting on Canon 7Ds. “It was a bit difficult to round up legitimate skiers, as I didn’t have much of a reputation in the community,” says Leo. “This was a bit of a problem because the [film] teams we were competing against were shooting with some of the best skiers in the world. At the last minute, however, I was put into contact with a group of local pro and semi-pro skiers who brought a lot more skill and credibility to our film.

“I was notified that I was accepted into the competition about a month prior to shooting and so I used that time to develop the creative concept for the film and plan out the production logistics and scheduling. We shot for six days straight, many mornings beginning at 4:30 a.m. in order to get to the mountaintop by sunrise at 6:30 and beat out thawing snow typical of spring conditions.

“Every night until about 1 a.m. was spent doing some editing as well as studying weather and snowpack data to best execute our objectives for the next day. There was a daily schedule to our shoot, but we didn’t know until the night before which day it would be.

“In addition to the editing after each day, I set aside the entirety of the seventh day to edit. The film was strictly due at 9 a.m. on Day 8 and was completed at 5:30 a.m. that morning, a familiar experience to any seasoned

student.

“After I graduate next April, and in my free time until then, I hope to work under some of leading companies in the action sports and commercial advertising industries.”

SMITHS receive first PITFIELD AWARD A t Founder’s Day on November 22, Selwyn House parents Mark and Lisa Smith, parents of Michael Smith 2010, David Smith 2012 and Patrick Bourque 2014, became the first recipients of the newly inaugurated Nancy Pitfield Award for parent volunteers. The award was presented by Tom Pitfield ’93, son of the late Nancy Pitfield, an exemplary parent volunteer who received the Speirs Medal posthumously in 2000.

The award will be presented each year to persons “who have, throughout their time at the school, demonstrated exceptional volunteerism and support for the Selwyn House community.”

The award includes a $5000 donation from the Pitfield Family Foundation, which the recipients can pass on to whatever special student or staff projects they choose.

KRUSHELNYSKIS named HONORARY OLD BOYS t Selwyn House School’s Founder’s Day on November 22, long-serving employees Marc and Christine Krushelnyski were inducted as Honorary Old Boys by the school’s Old Boys’ Association.

Marc started at the school as Building and Grounds Supervisor in 1980, while his wife, Christine, started the following year, running the school’s print shop and book room.

The couple were tireless workers for the school for decades thereafter. In addition to his regular maintenance duties, Marc built elaborate sets for the school plays directed by the late Dr. Byron Harker while Christine helped out with the costumes. Each year, they did an enormous amount of organization and logistics for the giant garage sales that were a cornerstone of the school’s fundraising activities during that period.

For years they went above and beyond the call of duty for parents, students and staff of the Selwyn House community and also for the greater Montreal community, said Old Boys’ Association President Charles Bierbrier.

The couple were always dedicated volunteers outside the school, purchasing food and cooking meals every year for the homeless at St. Stephen’s Church.

“Many of you have your own memories of how Marc and Christine have been a part of your life, said Mr. Bierbrier. “For all this, and for much more, the board of directors of the Selwyn House Old Boys’ Association is pleased to be able to induct Marc and Christine as Honorary Old Boys.”

Marc retired in 2007; Christine still works at the school.

Three OLD BOYS receive QUEEN’S MEDAL

hree Old Boys were picked to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for Public Service from Governor General David Johnson at a ceremony in April.

Harry Bloomfield ’59 and his wife, Nancy, parents of Old Boys Jon 2003, Andrew 2005 and James 2007, were nominated by the Humane Society of Canada in recognition of “decades of distinguished service in helping people, animals and nature,” says Michael O’Sullivan, Chairman and CEO of the Humane Society.

“I have known Harry and Nancy for many years, and when children, animals

or the environment are at risk, you can always count on them to pitch in and lend a helping hand,” O’Sullivan adds. “This is an award that is well deserved and long overdue, and their efforts have improved the quality of life for all and the betterment of society here in Canada and abroad.”

The Bloomfields have often been recognized for supporting humanitarian causes. Harry serves on several government commissions, corporations and charities, and has received a number of prestigious awards for his work.

Nancy devotes her time, love and energy volunteering for a number of social causes, including caring for animals at her local animal shelter, and is the proud mom of three rescue dogs she and her family adopted. While her three sons were attending Selwyn House, Nancy was a regular volunteer in the school library, working closely with the late Virginia Ferguson.

Harry is a former president of the Selwyn House Old Boys’ Association, and served on the school’s Board of Directors for five years.

Lieutenant Chris Robinson 2002 enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces shortly after high school and served two tours of duty overseas, including a 2007 stint as a communications officer in Afghanistan. He returned to Selwyn House for Remembrance Day 2012 to describe to students what life is like in modern peacekeeping.

Lt. Robinson served with an Operations Mentoring and Liason Team, a unit of six Canadian soldiers who serve as advisors to a company of the Afghan forces.

Lt. Robinson said he found the

Afghan people friendly, and he enjoyed socializing and interacting with them on a basic human level. “Our job is not just to fight,” he said. “Our job is also to demonstrate to the locals that there is another way.”

Vince Guzzo ’86 says we will have to refer to him as “Your Lordship” now that he has received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Seriously, though, the list of volunteer activities on Vince’s CV is too long to include in these pages.

He has served on the Old Boys’ Board and made countless generous donations to Selwyn House over the years. He has also served on the boards of many educational, cultural and recreational organizations, and has served as honorary chairman of many of the major fundraising events for these institutions.

Created in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne, the Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. During the year of celebrations, 60,000 deserving Canadians were recognized.

OLD BOYS: An Important Part of Selwyn House

By James McMillan Director of Advancement he 2012-13 school year is complete, and as the Advancement Office reviews the year’s activities and starts to plan out the 2013-14 school year, I thought you might like to read about all the events and programs that were offered to Old Boys in one year.

There were 22 events organized from mid-July 2012 (Old Boys’ Soccer) to the end of June 2013 (14th Annual Old Boys’ Tennis Tournament). Twenty of these events were one-day or evening events. The Old Boys’ Wednesday Night Basketball (run by Masaud Kakkar ’93) started in October 2012 and continued every Wednesday night that the school was open until the end of May 2013 (about 28 evenings). The Old Boys’ Blues Band (directed by me), our newest Old Boys’ event, started the end of September 2012 and continued twice a month on Tuesday evenings until our final concert on April 11 (about 16 evenings of rehearsals and concerts).

There were 14 events offered in Montreal, four others across Canada, two in the USA, one in London and one in Paris.

Add to this another nine Old Boys’ Board of Directors’ meetings throughout the year and you have over 73 days/evenings dedicated to the Old Boys of Selwyn House School.

But wait, there is more. Old Boys are involved in many other ways at the school apart from attending or hosting events. Old Boys serve on the boards of the Selwyn House Association, the Lucas Foundation and The Veritas Fund. They also return to the school and speak on Career Day, they volunteer as judges for the Moot Court, they judge debating and public speaking tournaments and they come to speak to various classes about their experiences and expertise.

One more measure of the tremendous involvement of Old Boys with the school is that we had 28 Old

There was an Old Boy current parent with a son in every grade of the school from Maternelle to Grade 11 in 201213.

Stay in Touch With Each Other One of the main goals of the Advancement Office is to keep Old Boys in touch with each other. Mr. Hannaford often will say at meetings and reunions that the most important thing for Old Boys to do is to stay in contact with their classmates, their fellow Old Boys and the school.

How do we help Old Boys get and stay in touch with each other? In September 2012, Selwyn House was one of the first independent schools in Canada to launch its own app: the Selwyn House Old Boys’ App for iPhone, Android and Blackberry. This free app gives you direct access on your smart phone to everything online relating to the Old Boys.

There are 2,700 active Old Boy listings in The Old Boys’ and Friends Email Directory. Each of these listings will display the information that each Old Boy has permitted to be published.

There are many staff, retired staff and other friends of the school in this directory as well.

The Selwyn House School Old Boys’ LinkedIn Group has almost 400 members. This represents about 14 per cent of the active Old Boys in our database.

The Selwyn House Old Boys’ Association Facebook page and the Selwyn House OBA Twitter feed are used extensively in all our communications to Old Boys. These two also link to the Selwyn House website, where all the Old Boy event write-ups, photos and videos are on display.

The Selwyn House Archives, available through the website and on the Old Boys’ App, has much of the school’s archives online in searchable format.

This summer, we have over 3,000 photos to upload to the archives.

Online Registration is the easiest way

not only to register for all the events mentioned above, but also to find out who will be attending. All the Old Boys’ Events are listed online so that you can not only see when and where an event is taking place, but even link to the registration page to register for the event.

Old Boys in the Classroom: An IBSC Research Project Selwyn House School is a member of the International Boys’ School Coalition. Founded in 1995, the International Boys’ Schools Coalition is a not-for-profit organization of about 250 independent, parochial and public schools from around the world. The IBSC is dedicated to the education and development of boys worldwide, the professional growth of those who work with them, and the advocacy and the advancement of institutions that serve them.

This summer, I was given the opportunity to participate with an international team of teachers on a yearlong research project that will focus on character education (i.e. respect, responsibility, honesty) in the classroom.

Most of my colleagues on the team will be focussing on an aspect of what they teach in their classroom that develops character education.

Over the 2013-14 school year, I will be focussing on the effects of having Old Boys speak with the students about some aspect of their character education and then encouraging the students to ask questions of the Old Boy regarding his presentation. My research will come from working with Selwyn House Middle School teacher Matthew McCarney and his students to see if

there is any discernible difference to the students’ understanding of what the Old Boy spoke about and whether he, the teacher, felt that the presentation enhanced the learning of his students or not.

My own impression is that there will be a difference because the students will relate well to the experiences of someone who has actually been where they are now, perhaps even in their classroom.

My desire to participate in this research comes from over 26 years of speaking with our Old Boys and learning about all the exciting and amazing things that they have accomplished or learned. Many will recount how something they learned while they attended Selwyn House had a dramatic effect on them and influenced their decisions and path.

I believe that the Old Boys are an amazing resource for teachers and students, and our research will, hopefully, support this theory with some positive data. I look forward to telling you about the results in one year.

Kay-Troubetzkoy in National Post Jonathan Kay ’85 and his former Headmaster, Alexis Troubetzkoy were reunited in print in February when Jonathan printed an account written by Mr. Troubetzkoy of a positive experience he had as a patient in the Stroke Prevention Unit at Toronto Western Hospital.

Jonathan is comment pages editor at the National Post, and his regular column, “Full Comment” is a mustread for members of the Selwyn House community. Mr. Troubetzkoy, of course, was headmaster of Selwyn House from 1971-81, and is the author of the 2011 book Arctic Obsession: The Lure of the Far North.

rmando Cabba 2007 will be studying art at the prestigious Florence Academy in Italy this fall. Armando is one of only 30 students worldwide who are accepted into the three-year study program at the Academy. Acceptance into the Academy is based solely on five images that are submitted by the artist.

“It’s something I’ve been thinking about since CEGEP, says the Concordia Fine Arts graduate.

But this is not Armando’s first visit to the land of the Renaissance masters. He has shown works in Ferreira and Florence. He has also shown in Toronto and Montreal. A recent show in St Henri with seven other artists drew 300 people.

Armando says he is a fan of the work of Rembrandt. He describes his current style as contemporary realism, mostly portraiture, but with a conceptual thought, “a soulful, emotional element

in the painting.”

“I respect all styles, but [lately] I stick to figurative work.”

In addition to portraits, he also does abstracts. “I like seeing what’s out there, taking risks and not getting stuck in a plateau.” He says he likes to challenge himself and perfect his technique in order to give free rein to his artistic impulses.

Unlike some of his fellow students, Armando is intent upon becoming a practicing artist rather than an art teacher. “I want to make it as an independent artist,” he says, so he is returning to the home of the old masters to learn their techniques from the ground up.

“It’s my passion,” he says.

He not only expresses gratitude to his parents for allowing him to follow his passion, but also to the Selwyn House Art Department, especially Art Teacher Vanessa Jothy.

“She taught me everything I know and has guided me down the path of being an artist,” he wrote in the 2007 Yearbook. “I can’t thank her enough for all the support she has given me.”

OLD BOY’s NEW NOVEL set in SELWYN HOUSE of the 1930s monarch had visited Canada and an event that is etched in Montreal memory. The science fiction begins when the protagonist discovers he has the mysterious abilities to fly, read minds and perform telekinesis.

The adventure yarn combines all these elements when Timothy must use his powers to foil a plot to murder the Royals.

The books is not aimed at the Old Boy age group, but nevertheless is an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the history of Montreal in the 1930s and Selwyn House School in those early days.

To recap his personal history since leaving Selwyn House, the following biography appears on Mr. Huestis’ website, Doug Huestis at the Old Boys’ Reunion dougheustis.com.

“I was born in London, f you see yourself in this book, it is Ontario, but brought up in entirely intentional. Doug Huestis Montreal, educated there and at ’39 has just published his second Port Hope, Ontario, the novel, The Three Talents of Timothy University of Toronto, and O’Dowd, a young-adult tale that is part finally McGill University, science fiction, part historical adventure graduating with an MD in 1948. and part memoir. For Old Boys, the I trained at the Montreal memoir part may be the most General Hospital, and spent a interesting, as the hero of the book is a couple of years overseas (in Selwyn House student attending the Sweden and England, plus a school in 1939, when it was still located good deal of motorcycle touring around Europe), then moved on Redpath Street.

The book paints a vivid picture of back to Montreal. I finally those days, full of familiar locales in landed a paying job as a downtown and west-end Montreal and pathologist in Pittsburgh, and in details of daily life at Selwyn House. The June of 1955 married the love of cast of characters at the school are only a my life, Rosemary Colford. Five letter or two from reality. The years and three kids later, we headmaster, for example, is named moved to Chicago to direct the Winstall, teachers are identified as Mount Sinai Blood Center. Two Phipps, Instey, and Miss Sneath. Sound colleagues and I wrote a textbook, Practical Blood familiar?

Historically, the plot revolves around Transfusion, Little, Brown & the 1939 visit from the King and Co., 1st edition 1969. This was Queen—the first time a reigning well received and went through

four editions, covering a period of about 25 years.

“In 1969, we moved with our five kids to Tucson, Arizona, where I was professor of pathology at the University of Arizona. Over the next 25 years I worked on special transfusion methods of treating cancer and leukemia patients, and treating disease using new techniques of blood cell separation. I retired from the university in 1995.

Since then I have spent a lot of time reading things I had no time to read before, and took several courses in creative writing. I have written and published some medical history, memoirs, a few book reviews, short stories, and a couple of novels.

“I have started work on a sequel to The Three Talents of Timothy O’Dowd.

This will have a different setting a year later.”

OLD BOY searching for HIV VACCINE O n February 14, Old Boy Luca Melnychuk 2007 spoke to a group of Grade 10 and 11 students in Julie Clement’s science class at Selwyn House about his role in the search for a vaccine to combat HIV. Luca told the students he became interested in this work during his second year at CEGEP, when he began working as a summer student in the lab of Dr. Michael Pollak. That lab’s research focus was on cancer, and Luca worked there until his second year of university.

After CEGEP, Luca enrolled at McGill in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology for his Bachelor’s degree.

During the last year of his program, he was able to partake in the honours program, which required him to complete a research project at a lab at McGill.

“I chose to work in the field of HIV-1, since it was a field that interested me the most and I could possibly have an impact on one of the world’s most devastating infectious diseases,” Luca says. “For my honours project I worked in the lab of Dr. Mouland, and my research focused on basic HIV-1 biology. The work I did during my honours project will be published within the next couple of months in a scientific journal with the work of several other researchers in that lab. I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree last June with first-class honours and on the dean’s list. This September, I enrolled in the department of Experimental Medicine for my Master’s degree and began work with Dr. Zaharatos.

“My work now focuses on developing a HIV-1 vaccine for a small community in Botswana. I am laying down the foundation for the development of this vaccine. I am currently optimizing the vaccine, and hopefully within several months I

will be testing the vaccine in a small-animal model.”

The Selwyn House students were impressed with Luca’s work. “I enjoyed how Luca explained the origin of the HIV virus,” said Farhan Fancy (Gr. 10). “I also found it quite interesting that cures are on the way in the next few years.”

Luca said he was, in turn, very impressed with the level of questions asked and the discussion that he was able to have with the students of Ms. Clement’s class. “I don’t think that when I was at Selwyn House the majority my classmates would have been able to have such a high level of discussion concerning HIV-1 and vaccine development,” he said afterward.

From VERITAS to STAGE AND SCREEN ou may have recognized the back of his head on the front cover of this issue of Veritas, or you may have seen his outstanding performances in this year’s Senior Play, In the Company of Men, but you will, no doubt, be seeing more of the face of Stephen Baxter 2013 as he continues to build a career as an actor.

In addition to his theatrical work at Selwyn House, Stephen had a role in a short film in December called Today, for which he was nominated for best actor in his theatre school’s

film festival. His most important role to date has been playing the lead in a professional production at Montreal’s Fringe Festival, called In a State of Grace, where he played a man lost in purgatory with no memory. He also recently finished another project called Brought to you By, in which he starred as a Las Vegas entertainer.

“I’ve been pursuing offers from independent films for a while now, and have been signed on to do the stunt choreography on two films,” says Stephen. “I will also be playing

the lead role in my own independent martial arts film shooting soon.”

Stephen has also been talking with casting agencies, lining up work on some Hollywood films, so you might be seeing him on the big screen soon!

Book tells dramatic tale of HOCKEY DEFECTORS

T

al Pinchevsky ’95 returned to Selwyn House on November 12 and 13 to talk to students about his job as a writer for NHL.com, and about his new book, Breakway: From Behind the Iron Curtain to the NHL—the Untold Story of Hockey’s Great Escapes.

Tal’s book chronicles the events that led the defections of many Eastern European hockey players to North America, as well as the effects of those defections—not only on the players themselves, but on the game of hockey.

The story is played out on a stage of decades of international feuds, with a plot involving KGB agents, clandestine meetings and car chases.

“It was a very different time,” says Tal. “The bad feelings between Czechoslovakia and USSR are hard to imagine today.” The Soviet crackdown on the “Prague Spring” uprising of 1968 had fanned the flames of a longsimmering unrest between the USSR and its satellite countries.

As well, the Cold-War rivalry between the Soviets and the west added to the competitive atmosphere. “The best way to show which system was superior was through sports,” Tal points

out.

As a result, hockey arenas became political arenas, with old scores being settled on the scoreboards.

In North America, demand for new players exploded in 1972 with the establishment of the World Hockey Association and the resulting “war for talent” between the WHA and the NHL. Scouts began casting their eyes toward Eastern Europe.

The first Czech to defect was Vaclav Nedomansky. In 1974 he and his family pretended to be taking a vacation in Switzerland. Instead, they boarded a plane for Toronto, not knowing if they would ever see their friends and family again. Having once been a big star in his native country, Nedomasky’s name was now “effectively erased from the history books back home,” Pinchevsky says.

The effect was profound, not only in the hockey world, but in the world of geopolitics. “Nedomansky had helped plant the seeds of a new kind of revolution through Eastern Europe,” Tal writes. It was a case of “Czechoslovakia and other USSR satellite countries asserting their national will in the face of the Soviet bear.”

The defections often tore families apart, as was the case with the Stasny brothers, who were lured to Quebec City to play for the Nordiques in 1968.

The two younger ones, Peter and Anton, defected while on tour in Austria, fleeing from men in black for the sanctuary of the Canadian embassy.

But Marian, the oldest, had three children and felt compelled to stay home, where he was kicked off hockey teams and was constantly under government surveillance. “He was ostracized and lost every friend he had,” Tal says. “He couldn’t play hockey. His kids were barred from university, and his parents couldn’t get an apartment.”

If the younger Stasny brothers had returned they would have been thrown in prison.

There are similar stories in the cases

of the families of Petr Svoboda and Petr Kilma. Even though the fortunes of most of the defectors improved greatly in North America, they often had difficulty adjusting to the culture and learning English and/or French. Some adapted easily, some not.

Tal says the influx of players from Eastern Europe “transformed the NHL. You can see [their influence] in today’s game,” he says.

The Europeans were used to larger ice surfaces and they played a “faster, fluid, more finessed game.” The Canadian style of play at that time was more physical, relying more on enforcers than is the case today. As result of the flood of European immigrants, the Canadian game has, in Tal’s opinion, become more exciting. “Our players are in better shape today [as a result].”

Since moving to New York City in 2001, Tal has written primarily about sports and popular culture for a variety of print and online publications, including The New York Times, ESPN the Magazine, Rolling Stone, the New York Post, Spin, The Source, Men’s Fitness, Time Out New York, The Hockey News, and Madison Square Garden’s website.

He is currently staff writer and producer for NHL.com.

BLUES BAND debuts The newly formed Old Boys Blues Band played its first gig on April 11, and it was a long one. They started their day at 8:20 a.m. with their first of two shows for students.

In the evening they played for the Buona Sera Benefit to raise money for the VIVO Foundation. At 9 p.m. Coristine Hall was converted into lounge seating for a pub night, with the band entertaining till nearly 11. The band, made up entirely of Old Boys, was organized

PRIZEGIVING 2013: the VERITAS vision ne way to measure whether a school has been successful in instilling its highest values into its students is to observe the commonalities between what the students say and what their headmaster says.

The striking similarity between the themes contained in the Prizegiving messages of Head Prefect Michael Kounadis and Headmaster Hal Hannaford on June 19 was a testament both to the success of the school and to the Class of 2013.

First to the podium, Michael Kounadis described his classmates as “extremely compassionate and kind people.”

“Never once has a complete grade grown so close as we have in this past year,” he said. “All the cliques and crews and bros and boys combined to form a strong, tenacious, confident, and unbreakable group of warm-hearted young men. And that’s the legacy we will leave. A grade remembered for their capacity to include and bond, and appreciate a school that has done so much for us.”

“This school is a great place because it’s an environment in which you can count on people to be there for you,” he said.

“Exclusion was very much taboo during our years here.”

brotherhood,” he concluded. “A fraternity of men who know the true value of loyalty, dedication, and veritas.”

“Veritas,” not just the school’s motto, but a word that encapsulates the principles put forward by the headmaster as a formula for a happy life.

“Happy people are successful, not the other way around,” he began. Veritas, or truth—with its three pillars of being true to one’s self, true to others and true to one’s school—helps answer the question: ‘What do I have to do to be happy?’”

“The first step is that elusive goal of self-awareness,” he said. “And you need each other. Your friendships are everything, but they require effort, dedication, respect and, above all, kindness.”

Being true to one’s school, which translates as recognizing the value of hard work, forms the third pillar of the Veritas vision.

“Simple as it sounds, this Veritas lifestyle has the possibility of bringing you so much happiness,” said Mr. Hannaford, and if this is true you are well on your way to achieving all the success you want and need.”

GRYPHONS win BANNERS in five sports he Bantam Football Gryphons won the Greater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA) championship victory over previously undefeated Kuper Academy on October 31.

The Selwyn House Elementary Hockey team won the GMAA Banner on February 18 at LCC, defeating Royal Vale in the semifinal and Kuper Academy in the final.

The Selwyn House swim team won two GMAA banners on February 19. They won the Midget Swim title, as well as the Overall Team Aggregate honours.

Late in the season, the tennis team and the Bantam rugby team also won GMAA championship banners.

Moore wins GOLD 2 YEARS RUNNING elwyn House Grade 10 wrestler Alex Moore won his second consecutive Canadian Gold Medal and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament at the Canadian Cadeté Juvenile Wrestling Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan April 4-7.

Moore defeated five opponents on his way to victory in the 50-kg weight class.

The Selwyn House team placed 7th at the Championships.

In his first time at the nationals, Nathan Palayew (Gr. 9) finished fourth in the 46-kg weight class and had a record of 2-2.

Moving up an age division to Juvenile, Sam Barmish (Gr. 10) competed in the most difficult weight class in the tournament (63 kg), with 39 competitors. He finished with a 2-2 record, losing to the eventual Bronze Medalist.

high level,” says Coach Rob Moore.

“The Canadian Open Championships feature the strongest competitors in the country, and many future Olympians.”

GRYPHONS travel in style on GUZZO BUS elwyn House athletic teams will now be riding to games in style, thanks to an initiative

by Old Boy Vince Guzzo ’86. Vince arranged and paid for the school’s white 2008 Ford bus to be refinished in a wrap that displays the school’s logo and photos of its sports teams.

The design shows Gryphon rugby, football and rock climbers in action.

“Every major school has its own bus,” Mr. Maurovich points out, “so this gets some advertising out there in a tasteful way.”

NEW MEDIA STUDIO gives AV its own space

T

here is no question about it: digital music, photos and video are essential ingredients of any young person’s world. Any school that does not have high-quality facilities for producing these types of material is not going to be speaking a language its students understand.

“The main problem before was that we didn’t have a space,” says computer science teacher Bill Bedard. Selwyn House students have been working with digital audio, photography and video for some time now, but they had no permanent installation for their equipment, so they were filming in hallways and classrooms.

Thanks to donations from profits of the Argyle Shop, the computer department has been able to set up a complete Media Studio, where students can produce fully realized, high-quality audio and video material for class projects at all school levels.

Recently, many student photo and video projects have taken advantage of having access to a full time professionalquality studio with lights and backdrops.

Kindergarten students posed for a series of photos in Halloween costume, and two classes of Grade 2 students made a video where they simulate a newscast. Grade 8 students have made Public Service Announcement videos for their Ethics and Religious Culture class.

Senior and Middle School students have shot movie-trailer-style videos as book reports for their French classes. The Glee Club members produced a special-effects photo for a poster promoting their competition. Grade 11 boys have been shooting interviews that will be compiled on a DVD to be distributed with the 2013 Yearbook.

All this was made possible through a $20,000 donation from the Argyle Shop.

Starting at the base of the design, the printer all kinds. It will be a different world when anything can be builds an object in layers, like a cake decorator squirting icing, made anywhere.

As early as 2007, The Wall Street Journal and Time or a miniature bricklayer building a tiny house. Virtually any small object can be built by this method. More sophisticated magazine were identifying the 3-D printer as one of the most influential design innovations of our time. A February 2011 printers can build larger objects from a variety of materials.

Unlike regular chess pieces, no one knows what the pieces for story entitled “This Machine will Change the World.” This a 3-D chess game should look like. The students had to design technology, it says, “… will allow you to turn CAD files into and build pieces entirely from their own imagination. “Grade physical things as easily as printing a photo.” The technology 11 students like to really push the limits of design and see what is really starting to take off now that one can purchase preprogrammed designs off the Internet, skipping the tedious part they’re capable of doing with the software,” says Mr. Bedard.

The implications of 3-D printing for the future are huge. and getting right to work building our world from scratch. “If Traditional manufacturing methods can achieve an economy you can think it,” says Wired, “you can build it.”

Michael Penner ’86, whose company, Richilieu Legware, is expanding into South Korea and Mexico, was featured in a recent issue of En Route magazine in their “Frequent Flyers” column with travelling tips and anecdotes about making the most of the life of a business globetrotter.

On September 21, Nic Cabana 2006 officially accepted an offer from, and signed with, Sony Pictures Imageworks in their Vancouver studio. His first job was doing animation for Oz: The Great and Powerful.

1997

Samer Sallman 2006 landed a job as an Animator at Framestore, which recently opened up a satellite in Montreal to support their London flagship.

Framestore is an Academy Awardnominated vfx studio responsible for work on Iron Man 3, Skyfall, Captain America, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I-II, The Dark Knight, Avatar and many others. Currently they are working on All You Need is Kill, with Tom Cruise and a remake of RoboCop.

Warren Valdmanis ’90, his wife Kristin and their four children recently moved to Tokyo, where Warren is working in private equity investing for Bain Capital. Warren also recently released an album, entitled Dream of the Sun, with brother Richard ’93

Jamin Kerner ’94 sent us some photos of him surfing at Long Sand Beach in York, Maine on February 9. He said the water temperature was 35.5 degrees Fahrenheit and the air temperature was 5 degrees.

Richard Slatter ’91 married Mariane Takahashi on August 4, 2012, cementing their 12-year relationship.

They have a baby boy, Luke Maxwell Slatter, born October 24, 2012 (their first child). The couple is currently living in Oakville, ON and Richard is working in Toronto as Canadian Manager for WorldBridge Service.

Keith Martin 2002 moved to Vancouver at the end of 2012 and started a job at engineering firm Fluor. For the last three months he has been working on-site at a construction project in Long Harbour, Newfoundland. The $3B project is owned by Vale Inco and is called the Long Harbour Mineral Processing Plant, which will turn ore from a mine in Voisey’s Bay, Labrador into pure nickel, and some copper and cobalt.

Aaron Besner 2005 passed his third and final level CFA in Aug. 2012. He has been at BMO in Toronto for 18 months working as a currency trader.

2008

Last summer there was a special reunion for the Selwyn House Wrestling Team at the London Olympic Games, where Graham Hooton 2008 was working as a volunteer and got together with his former Selwyn House coach, Rob Moore.

2009

Michael Cohen 2009 was back at Selwyn House on October 12 on assignment as part of his second-year business studies at McGill. His job for the day was to shadow Headmaster Hal Hannaford.

The MYTH of the GRYPHON

W

hat is the animal you see above, which appears on the Selwyn House crest? Is it a gryphon or a lion? Many people refer to this as a gryphon, which is an animal that appears in the mythology of ancient Greece, Persia and Egypt. But, a gryphon, seen at the far right on this page, is portrayed as having the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle.

As all Old Boys know, in 1912 the school’s founder, Algernon Lucas, retired from education and sold his interest in the school to his partner, Colin Macaulay, who renamed the school Selwyn House in honour of their shared alma mater.

As Edgar C. Moodey wrote in his school history, Veritas, the “badge” was adopted soon afterward, but that “it is

impossible to say with any confidence why that particular emblem was adopted.” A lion rampant is a common figure in English and Scottish heraldry.

Though the school’s crest has gone through several re-designs, it has always borne the likeness of a lion.

In the early 1980s, it was decided that, as the school’s athletic teams grew in prowess, they needed a worthy emblem. A nearby school had already named its teams the Lions, so Athletic Director Rob Wearing undertook the task of finding an alternative. He says he chose the gryphon “because it had the strength of a lion and the speed of an eagle.”

Unfortunately, over the years there still exists some confusion as people have mistaken the animal in the school’s official logo with the one that was chosen for our sports teams’ nickname.

Tribute to the late

SHANE ROBINSON A

long with family and Selwyn House staffers, members of the Class of 1993 gathered on October 11 at Brutopia in memory of their classmate Shane Robinson.

Nearly two dozen classmates were among those to pay tribute to their fun, cheerful and always energetic classmate, who had recently passed away. Stories were recounted, letters from classmates living outside of Montreal were read aloud, and the Robinsons were privy to some memorable stories about Shane’s Selwyn House days. Masaud Kakkar, Paul Logothetis and Bryan Guinness, from the Class of ’93 helped organize the memorial.

HUGH NORSWORTHY ’36

Speirs Medalist and two-time board chair guided school through years of transition ugh Norsworthy ’36 died peacefully from complications of Alzheimer’s on January 23, 2013.

Loving husband of Jane, his wife of 69 years, and much-loved father of Gord (Cheryl), Carol (Michael), Tom (Barbara), and Susan (Marshall). Loved and fun-loving grandfather to Cathy, Sarah, Lindsay, Tyler, Kelly, Alexandra, and Caroline, and great-grandfather to Caley. Predeceased by his brother Ed and his sister Bea. Born in Montreal in 1921, attended Selwyn House School and Bishop’s College School.

Mr. Norsworthy was a dedicated volunteer to various organizations, particularly two terms as Chairman of the Board of Selwyn House and 25 years with the VON. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. A memorial service was held on February 2 at Rosedale United Church, Toronto.

Hugh Norsworthy attended Selwyn House when it was located on Redpath Street, winning the McMaster Cup in 1936. He continued his education as Bishop’s College School, then entered McGill University in the fall of 1939, leaving soon afterward to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. Mr. Norsworthy flew cross-channel bombing runs from England to the European mainland by day and night, leading Typhoon Squadron 439 during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. For that and other actions during WWII he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After the war, Mr. Norsworthy returned to McGill, going on to earn a BA in 1947 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1949. He immediately went to work for Alcan Aluminum, holding positions in finance, sales and marketing in Canada, Britain and the U.S. He had two sons graduate from Selwyn House: Gordon ’64 and Thomas ’70.

Mr. Norsworthy was first elected to the Selwyn House Association Board of Directors in 1960, serving as treasurer from 1960-1964. He was elected chairman of the board in 1964 and served in this capacity until 1967.

These were years of great transition for Selwyn House. The school had just moved from its former home on Redpath St. to its present location on Côte St-Antoine, with Mr. Norsworthy serving on the board committee responsible for financing the acquisition. Much of what is now known as the Lucas Building was still under renovation and construction, and the school’s population and curriculum were expanding. In 1963-64 the school extended its curriculum to include all 11 grades, thus offering a full collegeentrance education for the first time in its history.

In 1967, Mr. Norsworthy was transferred to Toronto on business.

Upon his return to Montreal in 1976, he was invited to rejoin the SHA Board as chairman, where he served until 1979.

His second term was also a period of great change for the school, with the introduction of French Immersion and the purchase of the school’s first computer. At the same time, there were other changes taking place within and without the school that placed new demands on the board. Not only were parents, teachers and students demanding a stronger voice in how the school was run, but so was the Quebec government.

“Mr. Norsworthy was admirably suited to the task confronting him,” wrote SHS teacher the late Edgar Moodey in his 1978 history of the school, Veritas. “While never having any doubt concerning his own opinions, he never gave them an undue prominence, but opened a wide net to gather the considered judgments of others, and showed a rare skill in arriving at a first-class consensus. His strategy was necessary in the disturbing times through which he kept a deft hand on the tiller, and the school owes a debt to his adroit leadership which avoided so many reefs of discord and discontent that plagued the establishing of a secondary education in the mid-sixties and later.”

Mr. Norsworthy retired from the business world in 1984 and joined the faculty of the McGill School of Business, teaching courses in industrial marketing and living in Hudson with his wife, Jane. (continued on next page)

The following obituary was published in The Gazette on Norsworthy as “a tireless friend and advisor to the school who has invested numerous hours and effort as a board member, February 14, 2013: Peacefully in his sleep, in the early hours of Tuesday, giving strategic direction to the school.”

Mr. Norsworthy, who had been a good friend of Dr. Robert February 12, 2013 at Place Kensington in Westmount after a long and wonderful life. Born in 1913, Leonard was Speirs, said that he was touched to receive the medal in his predeceased by his beloved wives Roslyn and Christine, and by former colleague’s name.

“Those of us of the older generation are absolutely his brother and best friend, Garry. He leaves to mourn his two sons Leonard (Annick-Isabelle Marcoux) and Anton (Sally), overwhelmed by the vitality of Selwyn House,” said Mr. his eight loving grandchildren (Leonard Jr., Courtney, Tyler, Norsworthy in his acceptance speech. The vitality of Mr. Alana, Sara, Amanda, Anton Jr. and Elsa) and his step- Norsworthy would, no doubt, overwhelm many of those of ■ daughters Marian and Jean. He is also fondly remembered by today’s generation at Selwyn House.

Donald William Brown ’36 passed away peacefully at home on March 14, 2011. Donald was born William MacDonald Hallowell Brown on May 17, 1920 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was the youngest son of Edythe M. and Hallowell Brown. Donald had an older sister, Elizabeth Brown (Carpenter) who preceded him in death.

Services were held on March 18, 2011 at the First Methodist Church Cathedral of the Rockies, 1011 Franklin Street, Boise, Idaho.

Donald grew up in Montreal, where he attended school at Selwyn House, Bishop’s College, Lower Canada College and Vickers Industrial Engineering College and attended graduate school at Syracuse University in New York.

Donald served in the Canadian Royal Air Force as a pilot from 1940 to 1945. He trained in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada and was stationed as a general reconnaissance instructor and test pilot in Summerside, Prince Edward Island and Costal Command in England during WWII. Following the war, Donald returned to his native Canada and worked as an assistant purchasing agent for Canada Air Ltd. in Montreal. Donald immigrated to the United States in 1947 and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. Donald was an avid skier and this turned out to be a very lucky thing for Donald, as in the winter of 1948 while skiing outside of Salt Lake he met the love of his life, Barbara Stratford. Barbara and Donald were married in September of 1948 and spent the next 57 years in marriage devoted to one another until Barbara’s passing in 2006.

During their engagement together they built by hand a sailboat that still sails to this day. The summer before they were married they began literally building their first house together without any professional help, toting lumber, hammering nails, mixing cement and hauling boulders. All the while working during the day and completing construction during evenings and weekends. The cottage was later featured in the Salt Lake Tribune’s home and life section.

Donald and Barbara moved to the Boise area in 1963 with their three young children and built a home, where they raised their family and shared their love for 43 years. Donald and Barbara had four children, Whitney Ross Brown, deceased at birth in 1952; Richard Stratford Brown, Boise, Idaho; Michelle Shelly Brown Seiler, Seattle, WA; and Ross William Brown, Portland, OR. Donald and Barbara loved their seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Donald lived a full life and was exceptionally active in family, leisure, and business. As a young man, Donald raced motorized boats in Quebec and at one time held a world record for class F boats. He enjoyed tennis, skiing, and boating with his family. Many weekends were spent as a family boating and waterskiing at Lucky Peak Reservoir during the summer and skiing at Bogus Basin in the winter. He was very artistic and enjoyed wood carving, drawing and creating metal

sculpture art. Donald also loved to fly. He was a student of aircraft and flew small planes privately for 35 years on business and family trips.

In business he worked for Morrison Merrill as an Industrial Engineer, Merchandise Manager, and Plant Manager. He worked for Boise Cascade as a director of marketing in the Building Materials Division. He was the founder and president of Image National Sign Company. He was highly inventive and successfully patented numerous devices. He established and serviced national theatre chain accounts with United Artists, Mann, Loews, and Warner Brothers. In addition, Image National in Donald’s time, was the builder of all Albertson’s signage. Donald was involved in local business organizations and served as president of the Idaho Sales and Marketing Organization and served for a period of time as president of his local flying club.

Donald was a fascinating man and vibrant personality. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. Donald leaves us to join his beloved wife, Barbara and offers the following: “Weep not for me, now my life is spent, my wife and children were heaven sent. Enjoyed the path my feet did tread, and that’s all that’s necessary to be said.”

A lifelong Montrealer, devoted son, husband and father, Blaikie Purvis ’38 passed away peacefully at home on November 8 after a long illness 12 days before his 88th birthday. Blaikie was born in New York City to the Rt. Hon. Arthur B. Purvis P.C. and Margaret J. Purvis. They moved to Montreal when he was one month old, an event “for which I claim full credit” he would later joke. Living on Pine Avenue in what is now Purvis Hall, which was donated to McGill after his father’s death, the family enjoyed a country home near Ste. Marguerite and summers on Martha’s Vineyard. He attended school at Selwyn House, Bishop’s, and Eton College, England.

After his father, a British Privy Counsellor and Chairman of the British Supply Council in North America, was killed in an air crash in Scotland in 1941, Blaikie remained in England and after stroking and winning the Eton 8 at Henley and graduating in 1943, went to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, from which he graduated as top cadet of his class and winner of the Sword of Honour. He served in the British Army as Lieutenant, Third Battalion (Tanks), Scots Guards, in Germany until 1946.

Returning to Montreal, he studied history at McGill University, completing his studies at Harvard Business School and graduating in 1951, after which he joined Calvin Bullock, Ltd. in Montreal, where he helped establish mutual funds as a popular investment vehicle in Canada. Also that year he married Peggy Wright, a fellow McGill grad, with whom he raised four children in family homes in Montreal, Chambly and Martha’s Vineyard.

For 30 of his 36 years in the investment business he was a senior officer of Canadian Investment Fund. Having reached the position of President and Managing Director of Calvin Bullock in 1984, he retired in 1987 as Vice Chairman. He also served as Chairman, Investment Funds Institute of Canada, and Regent of Canadian Institute of Financial Planning.

In 1990, Blaikie married his second wife, Andrea Vaillancourt, living in Chambly and then in Le Chateau on Sherbrooke St. in Montreal. Gracious and well-mannered, with a warm smile and sense of humour, Blaikie was a raconteur extraordinaire. He loved all classical music, and was very active in sports including skiing, tennis, racquets, swimming and boating. He served on various Montreal area school, church and club boards and committees. He was a member of several Montreal clubs, including Montreal Racket Club and University Club of Montreal, of which he was a past president.

During a prolonged illness, Blaikie was able to remain in his much-loved home, thanks to his loving caregiver Ellen Campbell, who became a virtual family member, helping Andrea sustain Blaikie through eight years of declining health.

To the end, he maintained his interest in, and respect for, others as well as his infectious smile and sense of humour.

He is survived by his loving wife, Andrea, his children, Michael, Christopher, Lois, Mary and Andrew, and eight grandchildren.

Published in The Gazette, Dec. 22, 2012 A loving family man, devoted friend and community supporter, Richard Peck ’39 passed away in his 95th year, on January 5 at Ste. Anne’s Hospital. He was predeceased by Anne, his adored wife of 62 years and his beloved brother Hugh. He will be sadly missed by his children, Ronald (Véronique Pelletier), Heather Anastos (Robert Greene), Alan (Rosemary Carneiro), Valerie (Mark C. Moore), Hugh (Diane Doonan) and Edith, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He proudly served his country in WWII, and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross on his first sortie as captain. An exceptionally active and engaged man, he donated his valuable talents to many community, professional and charitable organizations. He was a lifelong contributor to the In His Name Society, a benevolent organization founded by his greatgrandmother, and through it devoted much time and effort to the welfare of Montreal’s less fortunate. Among other contributive roles, he was a founding member of the Mount Royal Ski School, president of the American Society for Metals, president of the Cascade Golf & Tennis Club, and served in various positions at his churches in Ste. Agathe, Metis Beach and Town of Mount Royal. He will be missed by young and old friends in all of these communities and beyond.

Elliott “Spaff ” Spafford ’39 died in Halifax on November 12, 2010 at age 88. Born in Montreal, he was the son of the late

Earle Spafford of Sherbrooke and Caroline Wilson Erdos of London, England. After attending Selwyn House, Bishop’s College School and Ashbury College, he attended the Royal Military College in Kingston, where he graduated in 1941 with a degree in military engineering. In WW2, he served with the 27th Canadian Armoured Regiment (Sherbrooke Fusiliers) in England and northwest Europe. Spafford was “Mentioned in Despatches” and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry and distinguished services in action. He participated in combined operations before landing on Juno Beach, Normandy, on June 6, 1944. He served with distinction as a tank commander and was promoted to the rank of Acting Major in 1945, when he was awarded the Military Cross. He remained in the military until 1964, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

Spaff joined Tuckett Tobacco Co. in May 1946 and posted to Halifax in 1947, where he met and married his first wife, the former Alayne Curry, in 1948. He travelled extensively with his work, eventually returning to Halifax in 1954 when he became a partner in, and subsequently the owner and chief executive officer of, the investment firm of Cornell McGillivray Ltd. He was a past president of the Royal United Services Institute and the Halifax Club, and for 25 years served on the Point Pleasant Park Commission. He was a founding member of Halifax Grammar School and a member of the Halifax Curling Club, Ashburn Golf Club and Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron and was also a member of St. Andrews Club, Delray Beach, Florida and Country Club of Florida. As well as his first wife, he was predeceased by his son, Tyler Alan; his brother Tyler Wilson; and his second wife, Barbara (Bennett). He is survived by his daughter, Margot; granddaughter Rhoda Layne; his stepson David McInnes (Karen); stepdaughter Heather McInnes; and stepsons Scott, Shawn, Matthew and Mark, all of Halifax.

Derek Hayden Crossen ’49 passed away at The Montreal General Hospital on Friday, March 22, 2013. Born November 24, 1932, he was the dearly beloved husband of Joan, muchloved father of Cynthia Hutchison, Diana Lessard, Willa Roper and Pamela Crossen-Milz. Admired father-in-law of Marc Lessard, Gordon Roper, the late Keith Hutchison and the late Barry Milz. Warmly loved by his sister Jill Crossen Sargent. Brother-in-law to Alan and Sally Webster, Peter and Nevenka Webster, and Nancy and John McFadyen. Derek’s happiest times were spent with his family and many friends.

His work ethic, generosity and sense of humour, along with his ability to listen and his willingness to look for the good in each person, made him a beacon for all to look up to and follow.

Andrew was born July 15, 1934 in Montreal, son of Dr. Graham and Lesley Ross. He attended Selwyn House, where he was a prefect, president of the Debating Club, captain of the cricket team and an avid soccer player. He later attended Trinity College School and McGill University, and lived the past 40 years in Vancouver. A funeral service was held at St. Aidan’s Presbyterian Church in New Westminster, BC, and burial was in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal.

Donald Mactaggart ’52 passed away on February 5, 2013, at home, from complications of Parkinson’s in his 76th year.

Husband of Suzanne Thomasset, father of Kristine (Kevin Wright) and Martin, grandfather of Julianne and Elizabeth Wright and Clémence and Arnaud Lamer, stepfather of Roland Lamer, brother of Susan Gwyn and Margo Mactaggart.

David Alan Cruden Walker ’60 died in Budapest on June 8, 2012 after a short illness, and is survived by his partner, Eszter Vass. He had no children. After graduating from Selwyn House he went to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, Scotland, but then returned to Montreal and took a BA at McGill in 1966. After graduate work at Lincoln College, Oxford, he held a research fellowship at the University of St. Andrews before taking an academic post at Witwatersrand.

Expelled from South Africa for talking too freely with black students, he moved to what was then Rhodesia, and devoted his life to training Africans to become school and university teachers. In 2001 he was advised by former pupils that he was in danger from the Mugabe regime. He was reluctant to leave, but went to Hungary, where he taught first at the University of Miskolc and then in Gödöllö, just outside Budapest. He was an Elder and Session Clerk at St Columba’s Presbyterian Church in Budapest, and was equally committed to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church there.

Patrick Doheny ’64 passed away April 19, 2012 in Vancouver, after a short battle with lung cancer.

James Gerald Fitzpatrick III ’68 Family and friends grieve their loss of a cherished companion.

Jamie Fitzpatrick died tragically and unexpectedly on Monday, December 3, 2012. A most vibrant spirit throughout his life, tireless in his commitment to family and friends, unfaltering in his kindness to others, tenacious in his perpetual quest of physical endeavors, it brings comfort to know he realized a great deal in his much-too-short life. Born in St. Johns New Brunswick, he lived his younger life in Montreal and Ste. Agathe, skiing the Laurentian Mountains. That prepared him well for his later life in Colorado climbing almost all the

“14ers”, skiing in his expert style the many slopes, fishing the waters, tearing up tennis, squash and paddle courts, mastering the golf courses, biking the passes and challenging the singletracks—a sampling of his physical accomplishments. His professional world was as generous and successful as his personal one and those who worked with him in any capacity will feel the loss immensely. As Executive Vice President for Corum Real Estate Group, he took his expertise outside of his company’s development to many other entities. He relished his role in mentoring graduate students in the Annual Rocky Mountain Real Estate Challenge at the University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business. In the words of a close friend who directs that program, “Jamie was the ultimate good guy and a wonderful ambassador for our business.” Jamie’s most extraordinary and treasured gift was how and who he was as father, husband, son, brother, uncle, godparent and friend.

His beloved mother, Joan Dorothy Timmins Fitzpatrick, precedes him in death. He is survived by his wife, Quinn, and his sons Kemper and Hayden. Also surviving Jamie are father James Gerald Fitzpatrick (Susan Riddell), sister Colleen Malet (Charlie) brothers Michael (Bette), Sean (Susie), Bryan (Nancy), and Tim (Martha), and wonderful nieces and nephews.

Mark Rogers ’74 passed away peacefully after a long illness.

He is survived by his mother, Georgette Drummond, his sister, Christina Haugwitz (Stephen Halikas), his brothers Anthony Windeyer (Pamela) and Michael Windeyer and his nephews Jesse and Kody Halikas, and his niece Elizabeth Windeyer.

Mark was an accomplished pianist who played with his heart and soul. He loved nature, animals, and above all his cats.

Mark will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Richard Iton ’78. John Richard Courteney Iton was born in Montreal, Canada to John and Carmen Iton on September 14th, 1961. He was the first of three sons. Throughout his life, he found his sanctuary in music and this deep expertise became an integral part of his often riveting social, political, and cultural analysis and ultimately a core strand of his innovative academic scholarship. Richard was also an accomplished athlete in his youth, playing and captaining many hockey, rugby, and football teams at Selwyn House School in Montreal. From very early in his school career it became evident that Richard was gifted with profound critical thinking skills.

His academic pursuits drew him to McGill, where he received his B.A. and M.A. He then went on to complete his Ph.D at Johns Hopkins in 1994. He was tenured in the Political Science department at the University of Toronto, as well as Northwestern University. Just recently, he had been invited to explore a teaching position at Yale University.

Old Boys’ APP LAUNCHED

e are very pleased to be able to announce that the free Selwyn House Old Boys’ App is now available for iPhone, Android and Blackberry (see links below). The iPad version will be available soon. If you do not have a smart phone, you can see a preview of the app on your computer (see link below). As far as I know, we are one of the first schools in Canada to have this type of app for their Old Boys.

The Selwyn House Old Boys’ App was designed to incorporate all the great features about Old Boys that are currently on our website (www.selwyn.ca) plus many additional features that take advantage of the programs on your phone.

Some features currently available include: Old Boys’ events with direct links to the registration website, links and directions to all the sports venues used by Selwyn House in Montreal, Old Boys’ news and profiles, links to the Media Gallery on the Selwyn House website, access to the Old Boys’ Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and You Tube accounts plus the SHS Vimeo account.

You can also access: a QR scanner photo album of Old Boys at reunions and sports events, direct links to the new Selwyn House Archives, the SHS Calendar with all the Old Boy and current school athletic events for the year, the Old

There is also a direct link to donate to the school online.

You can submit photos taken from your phone of you and other Old Boys for publication on the app.

Blackberry Notes: Some of the features are not available on the Blackberry, such as push notifications and the camera features, but most everything else should work well.

OBITUARIES

publication of two award-winning books. His first, Solidarity Blues: Race, Culture and the American Left, won the Gustavus Meyer Outstanding Book Award and the Best Book Award of the American Political Science Association’s Race, Ethnicity and Politics Section. His second, In Search of the Black Fantastic, won the prestigious Ralph Bunche Award of the American Political Science Association. He was actively working on a third book at the time of his passing.

His close colleagues note Richard’s extraordinary qualities of character. His warm, wry smile conveyed a deep wisdom about the human condition, but also a gentleness of spirit that

formed a powerful contrast with the bright edge of his social criticism. Humble and self-effacing, he was the epitome of still waters running deep. His kindness and generosity as a son, brother, uncle, colleague, teacher, mentor and friend were unfailing.

He is survived by his parents John and Carmen of Toronto, his brother Brian ’80, sister-in-law Andrea and nephew Justin, his brother Tony ’80, Tony’s partner, Levis, nieces Carmen, Angela, Ella and nephew, Satchel.
