The presence of the shade volume above is released upon entering the vertical vastness of a tower staircase, which is circulated to enter the library. All library spaces are radially located from this entry point, through a path of scattered objects generated by the cloister typology.

Tower mass express’s civility amongst similarly towered public buildings

The library itself acts as a shading device for the precinct, sitting on the first floor atop autonomous structural masses. The ground plane massing has been aligned to the proposed circulation and public squares which creates a permeable inviting site. The precinct activities are facilitated by these spaces such as cafes, exhibitions, galleries, keeping places and the visitor centre. T 11·42

Green Square library embodies these ideas, pushing its library below ground to generate a public precinct above. The scheme has inspired the proposed precinct but to become relevant to the Broken Hill climate, it has been vertically inverted. SIGN 11·31

Views from the sun show the permeable surfaces (Pink) or windows (Red) that will receive direct sunlight at a nominated time of day. Permiable surfaces are allowed to receive sun at all times of the day and year. They diffuse the light into internal spaces without transfering a large portion of the thermal energy.

Regular windows have a very deep (550mm) recess into the facade, so do not actually receive the high angle midday summer sun. In addition, the tower placement prevents the glazed sky bridge from over-heating.
