Cindy Aguirre-Herrera & Linda Duncan

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Fair Association has officially crowned its 2025 Fair Queen and royal court. Taking home the top honor as Fair Queen was Lucy Seibert. Seibert says she was overcome with emotion after hearing her name announced.

“I’m extremely shocked – crazy shocked. I’m still shaking. There are two (tear) marks going down my neck. I’m in awe that that happened. I’m so excited and happy,” said Seibert.

Joining her on the royal court are Princess Mattison Mays, Duchess Lilly Jahns, and Runner-up Grace Castillo.

Seibert says she is most looking forward to proudly serving as an ambassador for the Guadalupe County Fair and the community.

“Just getting the experience to get myself known, know more people and to be able to do something so important for the community and our family and our friends,” said Seibert.

Grand jury indicts man in 2023 Schertz murder case

(Seguin) -- A Guadalupe County grand jury has indicted a Corpus Christi man in connection with the 2023 death of a Schertz woman whose body was discovered during a welfare check.

Aaron James Declouette, 62, has been formally charged with Murder, a first-degree felony, and Tampering with or Fabricating Physical Evidence, a third-degree felony, in the death of 42-year-old Lisa Sipes. Bond was set at $1 million.

The charges stem from a May 26, 2023 incident when Schertz Police officers responded to the Palmera Apartments at 501 FM 3009 to check on Sipes. Officers reportedly entered the residence and found her deceased. Due to what they described as suspicious circumstances inside the apartment, an investigation was immediately launched.

As detectives worked the case, Declouette was identified as a person of interest. He was arrested a little more than a year later, on June 28, 2024, on a warrant related to tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

On October 2, 2025, the case was presented to a Guadalupe County grand jury, which returned the murder and tampering indictments. A warrant for his arrest was

issued the same day. On October 6, Schertz investigators, working alongside the Corpus Christi Police Department Gang Unit, located and apprehended Declouette without incident in Corpus Christi. He has since been arraigned and is being transported back to the Guadalupe County Jail.

Schertz Police Chief Jim Lowery issued a statement following the arrest.

“The Schertz Police Department wishes to thank all our law enforcement partners and agencies involved in bringing this case closer to closure. We hope this arrest will aid and allow the family and friends of Lisa Sipes to move forward in their healing process in her tragic death. I would also like to recognize the exemplary work of our investigative team as this investigation was complex and compounded by the suspect tampering with the crime scene. However, their tenacity, due diligence and can-do attitude personify their competence for the law enforcement profession.”

Despite the indictment, officials say this case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Schertz Police Department at 210-619-1200.

TLU climbs in rankings on U.S. News & World Report 2026 List

(Seguin) -- TLU has again earned some national recognition.

Every year, U.S. News & World Report publishes a list of colleges and universities across the nation that have shown themselves to be exemplary over the past year.

And now for the eleventh year in a row, Texas Lutheran University is among those singled out for the list.

Tracy Donley, TLU’s Director of Communications & Content says for the 2026 rankings, the university came in eighth place overall in the West—up from ninth place last year. TLU also came in fourth in the region for Best Value, up from fifth; and third in the Best Colleges for Veterans

category, up from eighth.

TLU is identified, for the purposes of these rankings, as a Regional College, defined as an institution focusing primarily on undergraduate education.

“We’re pleased that the value of a TLU education continues to be recognized and are particularly happy to see our strong results in serving our

region and in serving veterans,” said TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell. “These recognitions align with our mission and values and demonstrate our commitment to our students.”

U.S. News utilizes a wide range of data sources to arrive at its rankings.

“Best Value Schools,” for example, are measured by academic quality and cost to attend. The measurement of “Best Colleges for Veterans” looks at participation in federal initiatives which help veterans and service members pay for their degrees.

As for its Veterans, TLU says it is proud to continue supporting students who are veterans through Rankings, pg. 3

County annex building in Schertz back in action

Renovated offices reopen today

(Schertz) -- Guadalupe County officials are preparing to welcome the public back to the Schertz Annex Building. The county today will open its doors to the newly renovated facility. The newly expanded office is located at 1101 Elbel Road in Schertz. County officials say the expanded office space aims to improve accessibility while enhancing overall customer service for area residents.

They say beginning today, the offices of the County Clerk, District Clerk, and Elections will be fully operational and ready to serve the public. The Precinct 3 offices of the Constable and Justice of the Peace are expected to transition into the new facility in the coming weeks.

“We are excited to welcome the public into our renovated facility,” said Commissioner Pct. 3 Michael Carpenter. “This renovation project reflects our commitment to improving access, efficiency, and comfort for the community we serve daily. We are just in time and ready to accommodate voters in the upcoming election.”

Rankings, continued.

participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which helps cover tuition and fees for eligible veterans and their dependents at private, out-of-state, or graduate institutions that might otherwise be too expensive. She says the university is also a member of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), a consortium of higher education institutions committed to helping members of the military earn degrees despite frequent moves.

“We are pleased to be recognized as an outstanding institution for students who continue to have more educational opportunities than ever before, and we do so with affordability in mind,” said TLU Vice President for Enrollment Alecia McCain. Scholarships awarded to students by the university were reviewed recently and now amount to $28,000/year for first-year students.

TLU officials say the U.S. News rankings are widely recognized as a mark of distinction in the realm of higher education. This year, TLU reported a healthy influx of new students, for a total enrollment of around 1400 students. The university now offers programs on three campuses—the main campus in Seguin, and satellite nursing campuses in New Braunfels and Houston—and over 30 majors, 8 graduate programs, and 12 pre-professional programs.

The renovation project includes a new secure main entrance facing the large parking lot and nearby post office. County officials say significant changes were also made to streamline daily operations and better accommodate residents seeking county services.

Planning for the $4.14 million capital project began in Fall 2023. Renovation designs were under the direction of Debra J. Dockery Architecture, P.C., while work was completed by Tejas Premier Building Contractor Inc.

The fair queen’s contest was held Saturday evening in the Seguin Coliseum. Emcees for the night were Linda Duncan of KWED Radio and Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen.

Seibert says what has been most exciting is forming bonds with the other contestants.

“I have only known these girls for a very very very short amount of time, and they are already my best friends. I love them so much. They are just the sweetest people that I’ve ever met.”

The newly crowned queen and her court will now go on to represent the 142nd Annual Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo at upcoming public appearances and throughout area parades.

Matadors put up nearly 600 yards of offense, but fall to Pieper

(Timberwood Park) -- The Seguin Matadors and Pieper Warriors combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense and 98 points as the Warriors prevailed, 56-42, in a pivotal District 13-5A tilt on Friday night at Pieper High School.

The defenses started off strong in the first quarter. After the Matadors forced the Warriors to punt on the game’s opening possession, the Pieper defense would score on a 48-yard fumble return by defensive back Raja Lopez to put the Warriors up, 7-0. Pieper would get the ball back after Seguin turned the ball over on downs and would get another TD to go up 14-0 late in the quarter.

The Matador offense got rolling with two long scoring drives in the second quarter. Running back DJ Luckey capped a 70-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. And quarterback Corey Dailey would hook up with receiver Elliot Weaver for a 43-yard touchdown pass to finish off a 77-yard drive to even the game at 14 with just under two minutes left in the half.

Pieper went back ahead with 46.6 second left in the second quarter. Warrior quarterback Chase

Lyons and receiver Cash Lancaster combined on a 32-yard TD pass to give the Warriors a 21-14 lead. A Seguin drive in the final minute ended with an incompletion into the Pieper endzone on the last play of the half.

In the third quarter, the Matadors took the second half kickoff and drove into Pieper territory, but the Warriors stopped Seguin on fourth down at the Pieper 16. Just a couple plays later, Pieper running back Brady Hopper ran around numerous Seguin defenders on a 68-yard catch-and-run from Lyons to put the Warriors up, 28-14.

It only took Seguin one play to respond. Weaver hauled in a 52-yard TD pass from Dailey to bring the Matadors to within 28-21 with 4:22 left in the third quarter, but Seguin would get no closer. Pieper put touchdowns on the board at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth to take a three touchdown lead.

The teams would go back and forth the rest of the way with five touchdowns. The Matadors put the ball in the endzone three times with Luckey scoring on a 31-yard run and Dailey throwing TD

passes to Ayden Avila and Weaver, but the Warriors were able to score two touchdowns in between the Matador scores to hang on for the win.

Seguin put up 597 yards of total offense, while Pieper totaled 471 yards. Corey Dailey was 29 for 53 through the air for 376 yards with four touchdowns. The senior signal-caller also ran for 60 yards. Luckey had his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, finishing with 128 yards on 14 carries and two scores. Weaver caught 11 passes for 234 yards and three TDs.

The Matadors fell to 1-2 in district while Pieper improved to 2-1. Smithson Valley and New Braunfels are tied for first at 3-0, a game ahead of Pieper in the district, after winning games on Friday. The Rangers beat Wagner on the road, 48-7. The Unicorns stayed undefeated with a 27-17 win at Boerne Champion. Champion, Victoria East, Wagner and Seguin are all tied for fourth place in the district with 1-2 records.

Seguin faces Smithson Valley next Friday at Matador Stadium on Seguin ISD Athletic Hall of Honor Night.

California First State To Ban Ultra-Processed Foods In School Meals

(Sacramento, CA) -- California is becoming the first U.S. state to eliminate unhealthy, heavily processed foods from school meals. Governor Newsom signed a law to phase out ultra-processed foods, which are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. Starting in July 2029, schools will gradually stop serving them, with a complete ban on sales during breakfast and lunch by 2035. California has led the nation in school meal reforms, including making meals free for all students in 2022 and banning six synthetic food dyes in school meals last year.

Bleeding Could Be Early Sign Of Colon Cancer

(Undated) -- Researchers say rectal bleeding can be a clear sign of colon cancer in younger adults. In their study, researchers looked at hundreds of patients younger than 50 who underwent a colonoscopy between 2021 and 2023 and found 43 percent were diagnosed with early colon cancer. The study shows seven out of 10 of the patients that were diagnosed had no family history of colon cancer. Senior researcher Doctor Sandra Kavalukas says if a person is below the screening age with rectal bleeding, that person should consider a colonoscopy.

Scientists Suggest Bottled Water Not A Healthier Alternative

(Undated) - New research is suggesting that using plastic water bottles may not be a healthier alternative than drinking tap water. A new study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials found that the average person consumes 39-thousand to 52-thousand microplastic particles per year, and individuals who drink bottled water regularly ingest up to 90-thousand more particles each year than those who drink mainly tap water. Researchers noted that nanoplastics are especially concerning as they can enter human cells, cross biological barriers and have the potential to reach organs and tissues. Nanoplastics and microplastics have both been linked to serious and long-term health complications.

Louisiana Sues FDA To Keep Abortion Drugs From Being Mailed To State

(Baton Rouge, LA) -- Louisiana is suing the US Food and Drug Administration, asking it to rescind a 2023 rule that allows abortion drugs to be mailed into the state. During the pandemic, the FDA allowed mifepristone be dispensed without an in-person doctor visit. The lawsuit filed on Monday in Lafayette claims the FDA let the COVID-era rule continue after the emergency was over. State Attorney General Liz Murrill says the FDA is trying to undermine the Dobbs decision that voided Roe vs. Wade by allowing mifepristone to be mailed into pro-life states.
