(Seguin) -- The annual KWED Holiday Food & Toy Drive is on the move. The event, slated for Friday, December 5, will shift to the front of the Guadalupe County Courthouse on East Court Street in downtown Seguin.
The drive has traditionally been held outside the radio station at Court and San Marcos streets, but organizers decided to relocate the event this year to provide a better experience for donors, performers, and volunteers.
KWED General Manager Darren Dunn says the new location will help the growing event continue to flourish.
“We had outgrown what we could do at the radio station property. There were so many people involved, including kids
from the Seguin and Navarro school districts. We just need more room for the entertainment and special guests that morning. We also wanted to make it easier for folks to make donations. This move will allow all of that to happen,” said Dunn.
KWED has partnered with the Christian Cupboard and Blue Santa for years, and Dunn says the mission remains the same: brighten the holiday season for families across Seguin and Guadalupe County.
“We’ll again be taking new unwrapped toys for Blue Santa, plus non-perishable food items for the Christian Cupboard. Monetary donations will also be collected that morning.

(Seguin) – A North Texas man has found himself behind bars here in Seguin. A routine traffic stop late Friday night led to the discovery of more than two pounds of black tar heroin. That’s according to the Seguin Police Department.
Officials say that at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, a K9 officer with the department’s Traffic Safety Unit pulled over a Ram 1500 near Mile Marker 613 on Interstate 10 West for multiple traffic violations.
During the stop, they say K9 Ayax was deployed and alerted officers to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered more than 2 pounds of black tar heroin hidden inside a natural void within the truck. Officers also seized THC products and a semi-automatic handgun.
The driver, Andres Teijeda Valencia, 24. of Irving, was taken into custody. He is charged with Manufacturing/ Delivery of a Controlled Substance PG1 greater than 400 grams, Possession of a Controlled Substance PG2 less than 1 gram, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.
Police estimate the seized heroin has a street value of $65,000.
Seguin PD officials say the success of the interception was the result of coordinated work between the Traffic Safety Unit and the Patrol Division.

Drive, continued.
The move to the courthouse will make it easier for people to pull in and have their donations unloaded by our community volunteers. We also hope it will bring more community members out to the Food & Toy Drive. The more people there, the more we can highlight how this community comes together to support people in need,” said Dunn.
Dunn says individuals, families, businesses, churches, and organizations are encouraged to begin gathering donations now.
“If they bring them to the community Food & Toy Drive, we’ll make sure they are recognized for their efforts. We want to make this year’s collection effort the biggest yet,” said Dunn.
The Holiday Food & Toy Drive runs from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday, December 5, outside the Guadalupe County Courthouse, 101 E. Court St. For more information, call 830-379-2234 or email darren@kwed1580.com

(Seguin) -- A two-day search for 10-year-old Amarianna Castillo provided some much-needed relief Saturday afternoon for not only her family but the entire Seguin community. Seguin Police just after 4:10 p.m. Saturday reported that the local girl had been found.
The child was first reported missing after she was last seen Thursday evening. Police had shared that she might
have been in the company of another juvenile known only as Xavier. The department asked the community for assistance, prompting a widespread effort to help locate her.
Officials announced her recovery in an afternoon update, thanking the public for its support. No additional details were immediately released.
(Guadalupe County)
The search continues for a teenager who disappeared after walking away from Trulight Ministries in Marion early last week.
According to information provided to the Seguin Daily News, the teen was last seen getting into a white sedan shortly after leaving on Nov 15. Officials say she has run away before, but investigators remain
concerned for her safety. The case is being actively handled by the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials are urging residents to stay alert and report anything that could help bring her home safely.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office immediately at 830-3791224.

(New Braunfels) – CASA of Central Texas will be giving Seguin and Guadalupe County residents the chance to see the heart of advocacy up close. Whether you’ve ever considered becoming a CASA volunteer, wondered about the adoption process, or simply want to support children in foster care, organizers are inviting local families, community groups, and civic leaders to attend and experience the joy and purpose behind Adoption Day.
Today supporters will gather at the McKenna Center in New Braunfels as CASA of Central Texas hosts its annual Adoption Day celebration—an event designed not only to honor the families’ formalizing adoptions, but also to give the community a firsthand look at the profound impact that advocates and adoptive parents can make in a child’s life.
Held each November, Adoption Day lifts the resilience of children in foster care and celebrates the adults who step forward to guide and protect them. They say it’s also a rare opportunity for anyone considering becoming a CASA volunteer or exploring adoption to witness what those journeys look like in real time.
This year’s event includes the story of Ella; a young woman whose experience reflects why CASA advocates are so vital. Ella entered foster care at age 12 carrying trauma that made trust and stability feel out of reach. Her adoptive mother later shared that she imagined motherhood beginning with routines and laughter—but instead discovered that progress often came in the form of persistence and compassion.
Throughout Ella’s case, her CASA volunteer became a steady presence -- ensuring that her needs weren’t lost in the shuffle of court dates, case files, and agency transitions. When Ella struggled to feel heard, CASA stepped in to make sure her voice remained central. Today, Ella is an adult, a mother, and a reminder that cycles can be broken when children are given advocates who won’t give up on them.
CASA leaders say today’s Adoption Day celebration is designed to inspire others to also get involved. The ceremony that begins at 9 a.m. is said to include 7 adoptions.
The McKenna Center is located at 801 W. San Antonio St in New Braunfels. To learn more

(Undated) -- The CDC says eight more infants have been hospitalized due to a botulism outbreak. The outbreak has been linked to ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula. A total of 31 infants across 15 states have been hospitalized as of Wednesday. The New York City company has voluntarily recalled all batches of the formula, including all unexpired lots of formula cans and single-serve “anywhere pack” sticks. Botulism symptoms include constipation, poor feeding, and difficulty swallowing, which can progress to respiratory difficulties.
(Atlanta, GA) -- Language on the CDC webpage that used to state that vaccines do not cause autism appears to have changed. It now states that “the claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism.” The page also says that the HHS has “launched a comprehensive assessment of the causes of autism.” The Autism Science Foundation said in a statement that the change is “anti-vaccine rhetoric and outright lies about vaccines and autism.”
(Undated) - There could be another option, rather than a colonoscopy, to detect certain gastrointestinal issues. The results of a study using mice, published in an American Chemical Society journal. suggests a new pill may be able to replace colonoscopies in screenings for colitis and other bowel-related issues. Colonoscopies, which require a day of prep, including fasting, are the standard for allowing doctors to see the lining of the bowel through a camera to look for signs of colitis or Crohn’s.
(Dallas, TX) -- You may have heard the saying “Quitting smoking isn’t easy.” Well, this week is all about encouraging people to give up cigarettes. That’s the focus of the Great American Smokeout, a national campaign held Wednesday. The annual event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Health experts say quitting smoking can provide immediate and long-term benefits, such as lowering heart rate and blood pressure and improving lung function. Lung cancer, which is expected to claim nearly 125-thousand lives in the U.S. this year, is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America.
