(Seguin) -- Over 300 protesters took to Central Park in Seguin for the No Kings Protest this past Saturday. The protest in Seguin was one of over 2,100 rallies and protests reported across the nation this weekend. The protests, which drew large crowds against the Trump administration, is said to have included
Jakob Moreno, KWED/SDN Intern
anywhere from five to 10 million people across the country. The protest was against President Donald Trump’s perceived authoritarian and monarchy style of leadership. The national gatherings coincided with the Army’s 250th birthday, Trump’s 79th birthday, as well as a military parade held in Washington, D.C.
With the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office and the Seguin Police Department called in to secure the event and have a “visible presence,” members of the community took a stand along the sidewalks on South Austin Street next door to the Guadalupe County Courthouse. Protest, pg. 2.
Observed poster signs were in protest of not only Trump’s immigration enforcement but also what individuals believe has been a lack of resources allocated to Medicaid, veterans, recent tariffs, and other decisions made by Trump during his time in the Oval Office.
Chris Gaffney, the organizer of the local event, said it was good to see such a large turnout for what was his fourth time organizing an event.
“I started doing this back in April, and I wanted to make sure I was doing it consistently so people could feel comfortable to come here and express freely and write on our signs and contribute to the banner and express what America means to them and everything,” said Gaffney. “It just means the world for me for them to feel comfortable enough to come and express and use these resources, and it’s just something we all donate to. We contribute these resources out of our own pocket because this is what it means to us.”
During the protest, an unexpected downpour of rain was reported, leaving many protesters soaked but still standing –– expressing their concerns.
Gaffney says he took this weekend’s protest as another learning experience so that he is better prepared to host more events in the future.
“There’s a lot of individuals here who went through civil rights, and I feel so honored to be able to learn from
them and help grow the community with it,” said Gaffney. Gaffney said it was important to give the people of Seguin a chance to speak their peace while not being endangered and potentially causing disruptions like what has happened in larger cities.
Seguin City Councilman Paul Gaytan shared the same sentiment, as he worked with the city administrators and police department to help ensure a safe event.
“What I believe –– I contributed was support for the idea of freedom of speech, the freedom of assembly guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution, making sure that we have an environment for a peaceful protest without having to be threatened by anyone,” said Gaytan.
Gaytan was especially appreciative that the Seguin Police Department and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office were there when a reported disruptor approached the crowd and loudly counter-protested.
At the time of the disruption, Gaytan was being interviewed by the Seguin Daily News. Nonetheless, the councilman quickly directed his attention to the individual, who Gaytan successfully calmed down before officers made their way over and peacefully separated the man from the crowd without further incident.
Gaytan said the American thing to do is to be allowed to speak your peace respectfully and peacefully without the interference of the government or thirdparty appearance.
Protest, pg. 3.
Protest, continued.
“When somebody comes out (and) aggressively incites violence, that is not protected, and that is when they have to be told to settle down,” said Gaytan.
Andrea, one of the protesters at the event, says she was happy the situation did not escalate any further.
“We’re not here to really provoke anything, any bad intent. Like, we’re not doing anything wrong. We’re practicing our right to freedom of speech,” said Andrea.
While it was disappointing for Andrea and others to hear profanity and other discouraging words being shouted out by the counter-protester, she was proud of supporting people who couldn’t stand up for themselves.
Being a DACA recipient, Andrea understands that she is in a position of danger that could lead her to deportation from the only place in the world she’s ever known. DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a U.S. immigration policy that protects from deportation and provides work permits to certain young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.
“Our home is here in the U.S. We do not know Mexico,” said Andrea. “We’re proud of our culture. We’re proud to be Mexican, but we just don’t know it over there.”
Andrea says the protest was also about due process and giving non-criminal undocumented individuals a chance to obtain the necessary paperwork and to have them continue their contributions to the country. She says in her case, it was an opportunity provided to her as a child. She has lived in Seguin for the last 20 years and says these types of federal programs are designed to oversee the individuals who are allowed to live and work in this country. She says through DACA, one criminal act would put her in danger of being deported.
“We’re not criminals. We’re your doctors. We’re your lawyers. We’re your neighbors,” said Andrea. “We’re people, just like anybody else, trying to make a living, trying to be better for family, for your family, for my family. We’re just people.”
Andrea, along with the rest of the protestors, stood together and enjoyed a gathering that involved lots of music, and fellow cars and trucks driving by honking in support of the protest.
Following the afternoon protest, Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County Fire Marshal, and Emergency Management Coordinator described the gathering as “calm with no injuries or major incidents reported.” The same was stated for a similar No Kings protest in the city of Cibolo. He also went on to thank all the law enforcement, fire services, and emergency management personnel for their professionalism and dedication to community safety.

(Undated) -- A new study shows almost everyone who wears a smartwatch to track activities is willing to share the data with a doctor to improve their health. The study shows 94 percent of people are okay with data sharing and that nearly half already have shared data. Researchers noted in the survey that about four in ten adults wear a smartwatch, which could lead to more personal health care by reviewing the data on the watch. The study involved hundreds of people, with the majority in the U.S.
(Undated) -- Mercury from centuries-old pollution is circulating in oceans. A paper published in Nature Communications highlights that toxins released by long-extinguished fossil fuel fires and gold smelters are showing up in the bodies of Arctic wildlife. The research paper probed why potent levels of mercury in Arctic whales and polar bears are increasing despite steps the world has taken to curb mercury pollution. Scientists project that even if mercury pollution continues to decrease, its levels will continue to go up in the Arctic.
(Washington, DC) - The Trump administration is moving to overturn Biden-era climate and pollution rules for power plants. According to EPA administrator Lee Zeldin, the agency is proposing to undo rules that would have prevented one-point-four-billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions between the years 2038 and 2047. Biden-era projections suggest that is equivalent to taking more than 300 million gas-powered cars off the road for a year. The moves come as the Trump administration looks to promote a fossil fueled future.
(Undated) -- Suicide hotline and behavioral health services for LGBTQ youth and young adults could be cut under the proposed budget Department of Health and Human Services budget. Senior administration officials says the proposal calls for funding for health services for LGBTQ youth to be reallocated to the general 988 services. That means there would not be an option for someone to be connected to a counselor trained to specifically talk to and help LGBTQ youth.
