(Seguin) -- Clint Taft and the Buckwild Band will take the stage on Saturday for this year’s Freedom Fiesta at Central Park in downtown Seguin. Clint and his band have been entertaining crowds around this area for 19 years. Around a year ago, Clint’s son Colton joined the band. Colton is 17 years old and will be an incoming senior this fall at Seguin High School.
Before teaming up in the band, the elder Taft says he and his son started working together musically during the COVID pandemic. Seguin Today Magazine recently caught up with the father/son dua and are sharing some of their responses during that interview.
Clint: Well, it was really neat. I don’t know if I’m a very good teacher (laughs). So, it was actually what, during Covid?
Colton: Yeah.
Clint: He would stay home, and school was out and he was doing
school from home and that’s when he really got into it. And didn’t you use all kinds of apps?
Colton: Yeah, I learned a lot online.
Clint: I wouldn’t say it was me; it was more him (laughs).
Like his dad, Colton plays guitar and sings in the band. Clint calls the Buckwild Band a “country-variety band,” and he says the teenage Colton brings a traditional approach to the group that is appreciated by younger crowds.
Colton: Honestly not really. I don’t listen to too much outside of country music. Kinda like my dad, (I listen) to rock too.
Clint: The younger people seem to like traditional country more. It’s kind of fascinating. But we play rock and Motown stuff, and either myself or we have two other guys in the band who will sing.

(Seguin) -- Volunteers came out in full force this weekend for the annual Build for Better Bash at Texas Lutheran University. The fundraising event for Habitat for Humanity successfully included the wall build for Habitat’s 50th and 51st home in Guadalupe County. Crews of local businesses, sponsors and non-profit groups were among those who spent their Saturday morning hammering away.
In fact, their hard work paved the way for volunteer groups to finish up the framing early. Instead of clocking
out at noon, most groups finished up the job by 11 a.m.
Among those calling it early was Habitat Taylor Judkin, assistant vice president for development and communications. Judkin says getting the job done early was a testament to all the groups who volunteered their time to the cause.
“This is absolutely incredible. You never know especially in the middle of summer – in the heat – because everybody has the idea, the ambition in the morning to Habitat, pg. 3

(Guadalupe County) -- A Guadalupe County man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting a family member and threatening others with a knife during a domestic disturbance near Martindale.
Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the 500 block of Anderson Lane on Saturday in response to a reported physical altercation. Upon arrival, deputies learned that 27-year-old Jaren Martinez had physically assaulted a 27-year-old female relative inside the home. He also reportedly threatened additional family members with a knife before fleeing the scene on foot.
Deputies launched a search of the area and found Martinez hiding beneath a trailer on the property.

They do that kind of stuff. They have more rock influences.
Clint says they enjoy playing together and they plan to have the crowd dancing at Freedom Fiesta. Both father and son said they look forward to being on the stage during the Fourth of July weekend.
Clint: For me, there’s nothing better than performing for friends and family and the community that I love. That means a lot to me. Seguin around the 4th of July is probably one of the best places for family events anywhere. And I always enjoy that and I look forward to all of that

Authorities say he refused to surrender, warning deputies he was armed with a knife and daring them to shoot him. Officails say in an effort to de-escalate the situation, deputies deployed four less-lethal rounds

get up and then go home and then you see how hot it is and you say, ‘maybe next time.’ And so, to have this amount of a turnout, I think we are going to finish up early today and that just shows how many volunteers came out to build. It’s just incredible,” said Judkin.
Marvel Maddox who was volunteering on behalf of the Lions Club, also had a clue early on that groups were going to finish ahead of schedule. He says the work that was accomplished just shows how together, anything is possible.
“We got here around 8-8:15 a.m. They started their orientation at 8:30 and we had a prayer. They introduced the next four families to everybody who is going to get the 50th house so we just finished framing the 50th house like in 20 minutes. Our team leader, Andy who is with Habitat, he said ‘oh, we are on the second house already,” said Maddox.
The annual effort is just one way the non-profit organization works to support working families with nointerest loan home buying. Seguin Radio on Tuesday will continue to share highlights on Saturday’s Build for Better Bash. Again, this marks a milestone year for the group as it builds its 50th and 51st homes.
every year. It means a lot to me to perform in front of my community.
Colton: In general, I just love playing live, but also playing in front of friends and family is great. I also like the backdrop of downtown. I think it’s pretty cool being in Central Park and right by the fountain too. It’s going to be pretty neat.
You can catch Clint and Colton and the rest of the Buckwild Band on Saturday night at KWED’s Freedom Fiesta. The event takes place from 6 until 11 p.m. at Central Park in Seguin. Freedom Fiesta is free and open to the public. Visit SeguinToday.com for all the latest on this year’s Freedom Fiesta in downtown Seguin.

Our Mom and Grandma found joy in sewing beautiful clothes for her daughters, always taking pride in the details that made them feel special. She loved to travel with her friends, cherishing every adventure and the laughter they shared along the way. More than anything, she loved watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow—cheering them on from the stands at ball games, applauding from the audience at performances, and celebrating every milestone with deep pride and affection.

Esther was a loving person. She always complimented people she was around. She loved her family and friends dearly. Her friends became family and with that came her joking personality. Esther adored her nieces, nephew, mom and dad with all her heart. Esther and her other half on weekends took riders through town garage sale browsing and just enjoying the scenery. Esther will always be remembered for her dinners with family, her pack of cigarettes, her Bush beer and her Dr. Pepper. Even though her journey on the earth was short, we loved her dearly and we will never forget her.

Study Finds Toxic Mercury In Southern Gators (Athens, GA) -- A study of gators in Georgia and South Carolina found high levels of mercury in the reptiles and the waterways they live in. Researchers at the University of Georgia studied alligators from the Okefenokee [[ ow-kuh-fuh-noh-kee ]] Swamp and Jekyll Island in Georgia and the Yawkey Wildlife Center on the South Carolina coast. After months of collecting over 100 alligator samples they found that gators from the Okefenokee Swamp had the highest levels of the neurotoxin. The swamp located in Georgia’s southeastern corner had levels eight times higher than the other two sites tested. Researchers say the high amounts found in the gators is evidence that the toxin can easily move up the food chain from fish to alligator and the people who rely on the waterways for food
Ancient ‘Pharaoh’s Curse’ Fungus Could Kill Cancer Cells (Philadelphia, PA) -- New research shows that a potentially deadly fungus dubbed “pharaoh’s curse fungus” could fight cancer. Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania modified molecules from the fungus to make a new compound with cancer-killing properties. The fungi’s official name is Aspergillus flavus and is found in decaying leaves, compost, trees, plants and some crops. The fungus can cause respiratory issues for those with weakened immune systems or on certain medications.
