Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Geronimo) – Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley is getting some much-deserved praise from her college alma mater.
The Navarro ISD Superintendent has been named a 2025 Distinguished Educator of the Year by the College of Education at Sam Houston State University (SHSU).
School officials say this prestigious award recognizes Epley’s exceptional leadership, dedication to student success, and significant contributions to the field of education. This year, the selection committee reviewed a highly competitive pool of nominees and ultimately chose Epley for her outstanding accomplishments and unwavering commitment to her community.
Epley says this award reflects not only her work but also that of her incredible team of Navarro ISD teachers, staff, and students.
“Being recognized as an educator is certainly something that I’m very proud of. It’s a career decision that I have always seen as a service and I don’t seek any recognition so those times, Educator, pg. 4
(Seguin) – The investigation of several drive-by shootings in the Seguin area this past January has resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old man.
After finishing up a month-long investigation, the Seguin Police Department CASE Unit arrested Christopher Montealvo, of Seguin. The arrest also involved the recovery of an altered Glock 27, 40 caliber handgun. Officials say the alteration to this handgun, also known as a switch, made it a fully automatic handgun, a prohibited weapon without special permits and/or licenses in the State of Texas.
At 3:30 p.m. Feb. 19, Seguin Police Department CASE Unit officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 5000 block of IH 10 W access road where Montealvo was a passenger.
Montealvo was found in possession of a prohibited weapon (machine gun) and a THC vape cartridge.
Montealvo was subsequently arrested and charged with Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, felony of the 3rd degree, and Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 2 State Jail Felony. The Seguin Police Department CASE Unit will be referring the investigation to the proper Federal Agency for possible federal charges.
Seguin Police Department officials say they are committed to proactively investigating and arresting those individuals who commit violent crimes in Seguin and providing a better quality of life for its residents.
(Seguin) -- Leak detection experts were in town recently to help the city of Seguin get the Central Park Fountain back up and running.
Parks Director Jack Jones says the fountain was down for months, while some major repairs were made to the fountain, which is a prominent feature in the downtown square. Jones says the repairs went well, but another problem was discovered once the fountain was turned back on.
“People have been asking me what is the latest on the fountain. It’s been down for several months. It’s actually running. It can run. We’ve tested it. It works good. It lights up really well but there is a leak somewhere -- either the
base of the fountain underneath or in the piping going to the vault. It loses about a foot of water a day. We can run it and keep it filled and all that but why do that? Just find the leak. We’ve got a leak detection company coming out and we are hoping to find the leak and we will assess and go from there.
So, we are close,” said Jones.
Mayor Donna Dodgen says she knows people want to see the fountain operating and lit up again, but she says they need to make sure that all of the repairs are done at this time.
“We want it done and we want it done correctly and so that’s very important. It takes some time to do that. The fountation is not young anymore kind of like some of the others of us. It takes a little time,” said Dodgen.
The fountain has been a major attraction in downtown Seguin for approximately 90 years. Jones says once the leak work is completed, the fountain will be fully functional again.
Special by Tracy Donley, TLU communications director
(Seguin) -- It was just another night at the Seguin High School concession stand. The Matadors were playing football, and Cathy Beicker, a TLU math professor, was hard at work selling sodas and snacks. An alum of SHS herself, she and husband Donny have been co-presidents of the Seguin Sports Booster Club for thirty years. Their sons are also SHS grads. Beicker was working with a recent SHS graduate named Isis Vargas. “I noticed that she was very quick in making transactions at the window,” Beicker says. “I went home and told my husband about Isis.”
As it happened, Beicker’s husband had worked with Vargas the week before, and he’d also noticed that she was both quick and accurate—plus she’d demonstrated great people skills. Soon after that, Beicker was paired with Vargas at the concession stand again, this time at a basketball game. She decided to approach Vargas and ask her about her college plans. “She said that she had thought about it,” Beicker remembers. “I could tell she was interested but really didn't know how to make the connection to the university. I told her I could help her make the connection and told her how bright she was and that TLU would be a perfect fit for her.”
“College was always in the back of my mind,” says Vargas. “However, as a first-generation student there is always a burden that I carry of not being able to gain or remain in a college mindset. It’s always been something that I’ve envisioned and manifested for myself.”
Beicker assured Vargas that TLU class sizes are similar to those at SHS and that she would be able to continue working at her waitressing job while going to school. She also told her that although TLU is a private university, it would be—believe it or not—affordable. “She said she would think about it,” says Beicker. “The next week in the concession stand, I approached her as she was working and asked her if she had thought about college and she said, ‘I'd like to give it a try!’ I said GREAT! Let's meet with financial aid.”
The two set up a meeting with TLU Director of Financial Aid Erica Miller, who encouraged Vargas further. From there, Vargas immediately went on to admissions. “She was so excited,” Beicker remembers. Vargas opted to register for the 2025 spring semester rather than waiting until the following fall. Beicker took the time to encourage her through the application and admission process. “I really thought that we should meet and talk about college compared to high school. We visited and I explained that times could get tough but that she could do it! I explained the demands of college compared to high school. She listened to every word. She wanted to succeed!”
The next Friday, Beicker was running the clock at
a high school basketball game. She was surprised when Vargas came up behind her and hugged her. “I got in!” she said. “We were both so very excited!” says Beicker.
“The main reason I’m here is because of Professor Beicker and her strong belief in my ability to succeed,” says Vargas. “She has been there every step of the way, and her encouragement has really cleared any doubts in my mind.”
Now well into her first semester, Vargas is settling into campus life. “It’s going great. I love the vibe on campus, everyone is really nice,” she says. She recognizes the value of soaking in the college experience and interacting with the community. “You learn new things about yourself.” She plans to study education be a teacher herself one day—a field where she’ll have ample opportunity to flip the script and encourage countless other students.
Even now she has a few words of advice for high school students who are trying to decide whether college is attainable for them. “Even when you fall into a challenging position in life, you can still find your way to a college education. You are capable of achieving greatness and you can do it, as long as you go to class. Everyone deserves the opportunity of education.”
“There are many students like Isis who just need a helping hand,” adds Beicker. “She wanted a better life. She wanted to live on her own and have a meaningful job. They just need to have the courage to walk through our doors. I'm so excited to watch Isis mature and become a teacher in the Seguin community! What an example she will be to those around her!”
Educator, continued.
when there is a recognition of the work that you have done to serve students and families, it is a very sweet reward on top of an amazing career. To receive it from my university where I got my undergrad degree and got certified in English and Theatre Arts is a really special opportunity to be able to go back to the university and see that journey come full circle of starting out as a young student thinking about being an educator and now coming back as a superintendent and honored as a Distinguished Educator is just a really special opportunity and very very humbled by the recognition,” said Epley.
Proud of this well-deserved recognition is Melissa Sartain, president of the Navarro ISD Board
of Trustees. Sartain says Epley’s leadership has had a profound and positive impact on the district, and says this award is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to students.
“I think I can definitely speak for not just the board but all of the community in the fact that we are extremely honored that our superintendent is being recognized this way, and it is Mrs. Epley’s award. She has definitely earned it, and we get to reap the benefits of the type of leader that she is, and we are extremely grateful for that,” said Sartain.
Sartain says this prestigious recognition is more than just an award, it’s an example.
“We are really investing a lot of our energy and effort into the academic track in our high school, particularly for students who are looking for their
college experiences and where to go and I just think that having a state college being Mrs. Epley’s alma mater and the students getting to see what leadership looks like and that leadership is coming from one of our own schools in our own state and so I think that is great too,” said Sartain.
The Distinguished Educator of the Year award honors alumni educators who have made significant contributions to the field of education.
Nominees must be an alumnus of SHSU’s College of Education and have demonstrated expertise or outstanding service in the classroom, school, district, and/or community.
Superintendent Epley will be formally honored at the Distinguished Educator of the Year Ceremony on March 29.

Natalia Gonzales Quiroz, aged 94, of Stockdale, Texas, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 15, 2025 of natural causes at home.
Natalia was born October 5, 1930 to Adolfo and Maria Gonzales in Marfa,Texas. Her husband, Raul R. Quiroz Sr., and her eldest daughter, Estelita Quiroz Davila precede her.
Natalia is survived by her three daughters and son: Linda Quiroz Nunez and her husband, Ray; Mary Lou Quiroz; Patricia Quiroz Severino and her husband, Michael; her son, Raul R. Quiroz Jr. and his wife, Karen. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Gilbert Davila. Natalia has seven grandchildren: Aramis Nunez Miller, Gilbert Christopher Davila and his wife, Celina, Gabriel Davila, Raul R. Quiroz III, Petra Natali Quiroz, and Sarit Quiroz. Her grandson, Travis Nunez, precedes her in death. Her great-grandchildren are Madeline Gonzalez Pirnak and her husband, Nick; Elia Miller, Lillian Miller, and Camila Davila. Natalia’s brother, Ishmael Gonzales and his wife Mary, also survive her, as well as, many other extended family members and numerous friends.
Natalia and Raul were married after his service in WW II in both the U.S Army and Navy. They were married for 65 years and raised their family in Odessa, Texas. They had five children, but many friends & family considered them to be “mom and dad.”
Natalia was a full-time homemaker and mother. She epitomized the “Proverbs 31” woman. Together, Raul and Natalia opened their home to family and friends. Anyone could visit any day or time. Their home was warm, welcoming, filled with love and laughter. Natalia was the heart of the home. Their homestead was named “The Acres” where many Sunday barbecues and holidays were celebrated. They served “farm to table” to everyone. They raised vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and livestock for the family and anyone in need. Natalia made every meal from scratch including bread. She was known
for her famous “pan de orno.” In addition to teaming with Raul to run the gardens, she was artistic too. She found time in the evening, or early morning to sew outfits for her children, quilts for the home, and beautiful embroidered dolls.
Natalia raised her children to honor their parents, love each other, and work as a team. Most importantly, she raised them to love God and how to pray. Natalia’s gift of faith was the greatest inheritance she gave to her children. She was a no-nonsense mother who raised five strong willed children. At the same time, her sense of humor brought so much joy to the family. By the time her children started school, they knew basic school curriculum. The children were also encouraged to develop some form of artistic talent. The fruits of her labor produced educators, community leaders, entrepreneurs and award winning artists.
Natalia and Raul had a beautiful love story. They shared the same faith, goals, passion and love for life. The legacy of their marriage is still an encouragement to family and friends. “’Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” Matt. 25:21
Most importantly, they were born again believers in Christ Jesus, and now follow in His footsteps through the “Narrow Gate” to continue their ministry in eternal life. (Matt. 7:13)
A private family viewing will be Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 3pm. Friends may join them from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home, 713 N. Austin Street, Seguin, Texas 78155. State Hwy. 46, New Braunfels, Texas.
The pallbearers are Raul R. Quiroz Jr., Gilbert Davila, Gilbert Christopher Davila, Gabriel Davila, JP Gonzales, and Ray Garcia. Michael Severino will serve as music minister. Rev. Ralph Govea will serve as officiant.

(Lubbock, TX) -- A measles outbreak in West Texas is now up to at least 58-cases. Health leaders are frustrated that no help is coming from the federal government, which is refusing to acknowledge the growing problem. Terri Burke, who heads the Texas-based Immunization Project, fears this outbreak will get worse before it gets better. There are already a handful of cases next door in New Mexico, close to where the current outbreak is centered. No link has been made, yet.
9/11 Health Fund Activist Calls WTC Cuts “Shameless”
(Commack, NY) -- A New York activist for 9/11 first responders is headed to Washington next week to fight 20-percent cuts to the World Trade Center Health Program planned by the Department of Government Efficiency. John Feal told a New York City radio host today, “It’s callous, inhumane and cruel.” Feal, a construction worker from Long Island, says the cuts to the CDC directly impact the program. He says 137-thousand 9/11 heroes, first responders and others will be impacted and that people will die waiting to get their illnesses certified. Feal says he’ll meet with GOP senators and hopes for a sit-down with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr in an effort to get those DOGE cuts reversed.
(Newark, NJ) -- Demonstrators around the nation are protesting the Trump Administration’s firings and attempted spending cuts for federal agencies that oversee healthcare policy and research. There were demonstrations at Washington Square Park in New York City and at Rutgers Medical school in Newark on Wednesday. So far, proposed cuts are impacting the CDC, FDA, the Department of Health and Human services and the National Institutes of Health. The Trump Administration says it’s trimming bloated bureaucracy. Republican lawmakers on Long Island are expressing concern saying local research institutions could lose 50 million dollars annually in federal grants.
(Minnetonka, MN) -- UnitedHealthcare is facing a three-point-four-million dollar fine. Insurance regulators in North Carolina found that the health insurer let patients wrongly face excessive bills for out-of-network health care. The North Carolina Department of Insurance says UnitedHealthcare should have protected patients from balance billing. That is when providers ask patients to pay the difference when insurance companies pay less than the provider’s charges for medical services. The findings were the result of a four-year investigation.
