(Seguin) -- The Seguin City Council has thrown its support behind a state plan to expand and upgrade State Highway 46 -- an effort to improve safety and prepare for future growth in the region.
The council voted Tuesday to support a plan by the Texas Department of Transportation to improve the highway between Interstate 10 in Seguin and Interstate 35 in New Braunfels.
TXDOT officials have been asking for more public backing for the proposal, which is still in the planning phase.
Jennifer Shortess, the city’s assistant director of engineering and capital projects, made the presentation to the council.
Shortess told council members that traffic has steadily increased along the corridor and is expected to continue rising as development across the region accelerates.
“(There is an) 84-percent predicted increase in vehicles by 2048 in Guadalupe County. Along with that global view of Guadalupe
County, you can see here on our development layer how there are several other developments that are in planning stages. Also note that the Texas State Technical College campus is not shown on this map yet, but one day will be a feature for future development,” said Shortess.
Shortess said the city closely tracks traffic patterns and roadway safety data, which clearly shows the need for improvements along Highway 46.
“The city of Seguin has a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, and it identifies crashes and major injuries on Texas right-ofways and the city’s right-of-ways. City staff monitor this and update this regularly so that we can have the best information we have. As you can see, there are multiple crashes, and even the red dot means fatalities. So, the expansion of SH-46 is in line with Seguin’s Comprehensive Safety Action Plan,” said Shortess.
While final plans have not yet been adopted by TXDOT, 46, pg. 4

This year thanks to Beck and Beck GMC, we will also be collecting new or gently used coats to be distributed to those in our community. Shortess said the current proposal includes upgrades designed to accommodate multiple forms of transportation.
“This project will help address several problems such as increased traffic demand, safety, and also
different modes of users -- so, you’ll also have sidewalks and cycling areas,” said Shortess.
The council unanimously approved a resolution in support of the regional expansion project.
TXDOT remains in the planning stages, and no timeline for construction has yet been announced.

at the Seguin Coliseum parking lot. Families are encouraged to remain downtown after the parade for the lighting of Central Park, as well as to hear the announcement of the parade winners and the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest.
City officials say this year’s parade also carries a special tribute. Former Mayor Betty Ann Matthies, who passed away in August, has been selected posthumously by Mayor Donna Dodgen to serve as the Grand Marshal. Dodgen says the decision reflects the deep impact Matthies made on Seguin.
“Betty Ann had a heart for Seguin that was unmatched,” said Mayor Dodgen. “She led with grace, with strength, and with a spirit that lifted everyone around her. Our city is better because of her—its people are better because of her. Choosing her as Grand Marshal is a way to celebrate a legacy that continues to shine brightly, especially during a season that brings our community together.”
Matthies served as mayor from 2004 to 2012. Dodgen says her leadership helped guide the city toward new opportunities. Dodgen says she was also remembered for her warm, humble approach and her ability to make residents feel valued.
Her family will lead the parade in her honor. Dodgen says among those members will be her grandchildren – the same ones who rode with her in a carriage years ago in the same parade.
Tonight’s celebration again marks Day One of Seguin’s Holiday Stroll. Friday is the popular Sip n’ Stroll which will have some much-needed elbow room thanks to the closure of Austin Street. Saturday features the North Pole Stroll, a day of kid-friendly holiday fun and activities. And new this year, all three days include the Stable Stroll -- featuring dozens and dozens of nativity scenes located inside the former Wells Fargo Bank building. (Geronimo) -- A three-point heave off a loose ball by San Antonio Burbank’s Eli Garcia dropped in at the buzzer, handing the Navarro Panthers their first loss of the season in a 58-55 thriller on Tuesday night.
Burbank controlled the game through the first two and a half quarters, building a commanding 44-26 advantage at the midway point of the third. The Panthers mounted a furious comeback over the next ten minutes, outscoring the Bulldogs 26-7. Navarro sophomore Weston Shields drilled a corner threepointer to give the Panthers a 52-51 lead with 2:40 remaining.
With Navarro trailing 55-52, junior Bayley Burgess hit a three-pointer from the left wing to tie the game with 12 seconds left. The Bulldogs brought the ball downcourt and nearly turned it over, but a deflection landed in the hands of Garcia, who launched a shot from 25 feet just before the horn sounded.
Burgess led Navarro with 13 points, while Shields contributed 12. Junior Samuel Ibumba also reached double figures with 10 points. Panther senior Alvant Bates fueled the third-quarter comeback with several key offensive rebounds that kept possessions alive.
Panther head coach Jarrett Tyler talked about Bates and his team following the game.
“That’s what they’re capable of, that’s what I told them at halftime—we’re not doing what I know we can do,” Tyler said. “Alvant has been a big addition to the team for sure. He ended with eight rebounds and five offensive boards in the second half. He stepped up big and made some big plays. Weston’s been solid for us. We’ve got the pieces there, but we’ve got to start putting it together consistently.”
Navarro falls to 3-1 on the season. The Panthers will play in the La Grange tournament starting Thursday.
Other Tuesday results:
(Austin) -- The Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers fell 63-46 at Austin Liberal Arts & Science Academy. Navarro will host the Panther Classic girls basketball tournament beginning Thursday.

Wayne Bothe, age 75 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on November 23, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born and raised in Seguin and was a proud 1968 graduate of Seguin High School.
He lived his life with grit, humor, and stubborn determination. Those who knew him will forever remember his ever-ready smart-ass comments, sharp wit, and the sound of his laughter echoing through the house - and the garage.
Though officially retired, Wayne could never sit still - unless he received the text, “Football and ‘seegars’ at Skip’s,” or it was time for the Thursday night “Holy Smokes” group. He greatly enjoyed sharing a cigar, swapping stories, catching up on neighborhood news, and talking sports with his tight-knit circle of friends. He worked hard his entire life and took pride in his career as a truck driver. He spent more than 30 years driving everyday to Miller Brewing Company in Fort Worth. At home, he was a talented mechanic, always working on his own projects or helping friends with cars and tractors. Whether on the road or in the garage, his work reflected the same determination, and pride that defined him. No matter how long it took him to complete a project, he made sure it was
always done right.
Despite a life full of hard work, Wayne’s greatest joy came from the people and companions he loved most - his family and the four-legged friends who followed him everywhere. The garage is quieter now, and the house a little too still, but we take comfort knowing he is finally at peace. His voice, his humor, and his generous heart will live on in our memories. We loved him deeply, and we will miss him beyond measure.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Martha Ann Bothe. He is survived by the people he cherished most in this world: his wife, Lynn Bothe; his daughter, Alexandrea Bothe, and her husband, Scott Brown; his sons, Colton Bothe and his fiancée, Megan Younker; and Matthew Bothe. Wayne’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Hope Hospice, and especially to his primary nurse, Karra, whose compassion, humor, and ability to match his quick wit brought him comfort and reassurance during his final weeks. The family is also deeply grateful for the support and kindness shown by friends and neighbors during this time. Every thoughtful gesture has meant more than words can express.
