(Seguin) -- Seguin High School students will encounter a new daily routine when classes resume next week -- walking through metal detectors before stepping into the building. The new safety measure, set to launch on the first day of school, is part of Seguin ISD’s ongoing effort to enhance campus security and ensure peace of mind for students, staff, and families.
According to Dr. Ruben Carrillo, Seguin ISD’s chief of technology and security, the detectors will provide a new layer of protection for students and staff.
“We want our students, teachers, and staff members to feel safe on our campus at all times,” said Carrillo. “By having students go through screening at the beginning of the school day, we have an opportunity to remove prohibited items before they can become a potential problem.”
Students will pass through the metal detectors at the front door by the school’s front office, as well as at the courtyard doors by the student parking lot and the bus loop.

(Seguin) -- Got a library game board filled with summer reading adventures? Today’s your last chance to turn it in and score a shot at some seriously cool prizes at the Seguin Public Library!
Hannah Farmer, assistant library director, says participants from kids to adults must submit their boards today by 8 p.m. to qualify.
“This year, the theme of our summer reading program was ‘Color our World.’ So, it was all about the arts. We had a lot of fabulous performers and special guests. We had a reptile show. We had a puppeteer come and we finished the event with the kids with Mr. Will (Music) last week. But today is the last day to turn in your activity card for a chance to win the raffle prizes. So, there’s prizes for each age group,” said Farmer.
The library is offering a wide variety of exciting prizes, including tech gadgets, art supplies, gift cards, and more. Again, as Farmer mentioned, entries are only valid for those who have officially registered for the summer reading program.
In fact, she says there’s still time for kids and adults who have been reading all summer to stop by, complete their activity boards, and submit them before the deadline.
“If they have been reading and they completely missed the summer reading program and they want to try to figure out how much time they spent reading, they can still count that toward the activity card and if they have done enough, they can still turn that in. So, it’s not too late. If they do that too for the kids and teens, they’ll earn a free book. So, you want to come in especially for that,” said Farmer.
Boards can be picked up in person at the library or printed from the library’s website. If you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time to register online at: https://forms. office.com/r/pZb3B18QwP
The raffle prizes will be drawn Friday morning on Facebook Live.
The library is located at 313 W. Nolte St.
(Seguin) -- The end of summer is getting a special send-off this Saturday in downtown Seguin, as Seguin Main Street and Seguin Radio KWED team up to throw a night-time end of summer party.
But before the sun sets, food trucks and special vendors will be on site, bringing you meals all day long.
Attendees can treat themselves to a full menu of flavors, from burgers and fries at UBP Burgers to birria tacos, ramen, and tortas from Las Dos Catrinas. Davila’s BBQ will also be bringing their crowd favorites—brisket tacos, turkey legs, and smash burgers—alongside some Big Red cake sundaes. Even Gus’s Fried Chicken will make the trip to Seguin serving up its award winning recipe.
Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee will also keep everyone energized with coffee, tea, and lemonade, while Wiggle Waggle and Sip ‘N Sisters round out the drink and dessert options with shaved ice, smoothies, and signature lemonades.
Beyond the food trucks, organizers say other vendors will be also offering a wide range of treats and activities. Funnel cakes, kettle corn and ribbon fries are among the

The metal detectors will be set up as early as 7:45 a.m. for use before school starts. Students who arrive after the first bell rings at 8:35 a.m. will still be required to pass through the metal detectors.

items – along with unique goods like freeze-dried candy, crystals, and handmade jewelry available from local artisans. There’s also fun for the whole family, including face painting, hair braiding, and even a chance to adopt a puppy through Kingdom Rescue.
The Seguin Field of Honor will also be on hand to share details about its upcoming Veterans tribute and flag dedication.
Highlighting the day will, of course, be a bonus concert in Central Park.
The fun gets underway at 6 p.m. Saturday with Seguin’s own DJ DTrayne. Then from 7 to 9 p.m., Austin Gilliam and The Well Fed Texans will take the stage to make up for the previously canceled Freedom Fiesta concert and one of the missed bands during Seguin Main Street’s Central Park Concert Series. Organizers say the band will provide a blend of Texas rock and country music.
The concert is free. All food trucks and vendors again will be on hand during the concert. Most, however, have already opted to set up early and will be selling food throughout the day around Central Park.
during the first few weeks of school as the campus adjusts to the new arrival procedure.
“There will be a learning curve for our students, as well as our security personnel,” said Munoz. “We know this may be a challenge at first, but I am confident that our students will adjust quickly.”

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Panthers usher in a new era in 2025.
Head coach Glenn Hill comes to Navarro High School fresh off a state championship as the offensive coordinator at Smithson Valley High School. The new Panther coach brings a new offensive philosophy to Geronimo. After nearly two decades of running the Slot-T under head coaches Les Goad and Rod Blount, Glenn Hill is implementing a new offense, but he says the physical elements of the Slot-T will remain.
“It’s not a secret that this has been an extremely successful school,” Hill said. “Les Goad, I think he had 127 wins here. Then Coach Blount took over and just continued winning while he was here (with the Slot-T). It’s a great offense; the only thing is I’m not a Slot-T guy. You gotta do what you believe in, and the kids are buying into it, though. They’re finding that there’s more similarities than maybe they thought initially.
“While we’re not in the Slot-T, (our new offense) is a physical, toughminded, running the football first style of offense. And our passes will come off of that. So, that’s been the biggest change. Yeah, we are in different formations. We have guys lining up in a bunch of different places and we’re
spreading it out a little bit, but we’re gonna run the football a good amount and try to be a really physical football team.”
Navarro finished fourth in a tough District 13-4A with a relatively young team in 2024. Hill says he’s excited to have guys like Evan Rodriguez, Braddock Gallini, Hudson Jenner, and Dylan Trotti back for this year. The Panthers and the other three playoff teams from the district advanced at least two rounds into the playoffs in 2024, including district champion Wimberley, who made it to the Class 4A Division II state semifinals for the second straight year.
The Navarro Panthers will open the 2025 season on August 29th at Floresville. The district season for Navarro will begin on September 26th against the defending district champion Wimberley Texans in Wimberley.
The Marion Bulldogs are also underway with workouts this week. The Seguin Matadors will start their practices next Monday.
The Matadors start their season on August 29th on the road against Alamo Heights. We’ll have the game for you on KWED and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
Betty Ann Dolle Matthies, age 90 of Seguin, passed away on August 4, 2025. Betty Ann was born on September 23, 1934 in Guadalupe County, Texas, to Frances (Butler) and Henry Dolle. Betty Ann was born and raised in Guadalupe County, attended the Dowdy School, and graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1953. She graduated from Seton Nursing School in 1956 and was licensed as a Registered Nurse. She received a certificate in Hospital Administration from Trinity University in 1978. Her career in health care spanned seven decades.
On July 21, 1957 she married C. H. “Pokey” Matthies, and they moved to San Antonio where she worked at the Nix Hospital. They returned to Seguin in 1961 where Betty Ann began working in the operating room of the old Siepman and Hazard Hospital which had been purchased by the City/County. She was instrumental in helping establish the new hospital on Court Street in 1965, in fact she was part of the small crew who trucked the equipment over to the much anticipated modern facility. In 1971 Betty Ann was promoted to the pivotal role of Director of Nurses and Assistant Administrator. She helped to usher in many exciting changes from Guadalupe Valley Hospital to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, while always exemplifying her uncompromising values of excellence, compassion and service to others.
After the unexpected death in 2000 of her beloved husband and life companion Pokey, Betty Ann was asked to fill his term on the Seguin City Council. After fulfilling that role for four years, she retired from GRMC and served as the Mayor of Seguin for two terms. After fulfilling those two terms she accepted the City’s nomination to serve on the Hospital Board and did so until 2022. She also served for years on the Seguin Housing Commission and on the SAWS water board.
Betty Ann and Pokey were devoted members of First Methodist Church in Seguin. Always eager to learn and an avid reader, she was a longtime member of the local Shakespeare Club and enrolled in an art appreciation course in the 1980’s at Texas Lutheran University. In addition, she was a renowned hunter, proudly bagging a big deer each fall. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, had an incredible memory that could recall the smallest of details regarding everyone she met, and was famous for her exquisite Christmas rum cake.
Betty Ann is preceded in death by her husband C. H. “Pokey” Matthies, Jr.,

Throughout her career in health care, Betty Ann’s basic rule of thumb was to always do what is the best for the patient and the rest will follow. That held true in her leadership positions with the City and in her commitment to always do what was best for the citizens of Seguin. In all of her many roles, including that of mother and friend, she always encouraged those near her to pursue their education, advance their career and make the most of their life. Among the many bits of sage advice she often shared was that one only regrets what they don’t do. Betty Ann’s commitment and service to her beloved hospital and community of Seguin will never be forgotten as she leaves an inspiring and positive legacy for the thousands of lives she has influenced.
The family would like to thank Guadalupe Regional Hospice Services and Charlotte’s Cove Staff for their loving care of Betty Ann.

(Undated) -- Plastic pollution is a health danger costing at least one-point-five-trillion dollars a year. That’s according to a new report out Monday in the medical journal The Lancet. The report looked at data from a range of existing studies that found plastic chemicals are causing health problems and that children and infants are especially at risk. It’s lowering birthrates, birth weights and cognitive function. Meanwhile, plastic production shows no signs of slowing and only ten percent of it is recycled.

The city Health Department has just finished cleaning out eleven cooling towers that showed evidence of the bacteria that causes the disease. Legionnaire’s is a type of pneumonia caused by a bacteria that grows in warm water.
(San Francisco, CA) -- The company behind ChatGPT says it’s updating the app so it can better detect mental or emotional distress. OpenAI says there have been instances where the AI model fell short in recognizing signs of delusion or emotional dependency. The update will now limit how much direct advice the chatbot will offer about personal challenges. Instead, it will try to help users decide for themselves. ChatGPT will also now remind users to take a break if conversations have gone on for awhile.
