(Seguin) -- When the call for Christmas cheer came in, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office didn’t hesitate. With Santa Sheriff leading the way -- and Mrs. Claus by his side -- his team of deputy elves responded with gift bags, carols, and a reminder that community service doesn’t stop during the holidays. In fact, it shines brighter than Rudolph’s nose.
For the first time as Guadalupe County Sheriff, Joshua Ray stepped into a tradition he proudly inherited: the Santa Sheriff deliveries to local nursing homes and assisted living centers. Dressed as Santa Claus, Sheriff Ray on Monday led his team through Seguin Assisted Living, stopping by to deliver care gift packages and holiday cheer to every resident.
“It’s another opportunity for us to give back and to show the community the heart of our deputies and detention officers, dispatchers and personnel. When I came to the sheriff’s office, this event actually ended up being one of my favorite times of the year because you just
can’t go replace going into these nursing homes and seeing the faces on these residents. It’s so much fun and you know, in my career, I’ve worked throughout the state and I’ve seen Blue Santa and I’ve seen Brown Santa – Seguin is the first place that I’ve ever come to where I’ve seen Santa Sheriff and go into nursing homes and honestly, it’s a group in our society that sometimes gets forgotten about and that’s just not acceptable so we are just happy and ecstatic that we can do it every year. We are going to continue to grow the program and hopefully, improve on it every year and make it better. It’s really our pleasure. It’s our job to serve and it warms my heart just to be able to do it,” said Ray.
Adding an extra touch of magic this year was Mrs. Claus herself -Janel Ray -- who joined the visits as a special surprise for residents. As the wife of Sheriff Ray, she says sharing in this tradition alongside her husband made the experience even more meaningful.

(Seguin) -- This holiday break, downtown Seguin offers a blend of simple, meaningful, family friendly activities that make it easy to spend quality time together without a strict schedule or big travel plans. Whether you’re strolling through the local shops, taking in the sights, or grabbing a bite to eat, there is something charming to enjoy every day.
For a peaceful walk and some fresh air, the Walnut Springs Trail is a great place to explore.
Along the way, families can enjoy creek views, bridges, wildlife sightings, and the “Seguin” sign, a favorite photo spot created by the Leadership Seguin Class of 2024. While you're on the trail, stop by the Seguin Public Library to explore all it has to offer, including story times and clubs.
This season, two standout events include the Home Alone Interactive Movie on December 20 and the Kids Noon New Year’s Eve Party on December 31.
History lovers can stop by The Heritage Museum for an affordable and educational outing. Families can also walk through Heritage Village, view the downtown murals, and read the history on monuments and placards around town. Don’t miss Sebastopol House, where you can step inside to explore Seguin’s early history and view exhibits from the Wilson Pottery Museum.
These historic sites offer a deeper connection to the community’s story.
The local art scene adds another layer of color to the break. The Seguin Art League is open for the ‘Our Best to You’ art show, featuring a diverse array of works from local artists, including watercolor, oils, ceramics, mosaics, photography, jewelry and fiber arts, that showcase the creativity and talent of the community.
You’re So Crafty will host a Winter Break Art Camp from December 29 to 31, perfect for keeping kids engaged and creative during the quiet days between holidays. The Seguin Squirrel Trail is a fun adventure anytime. Take this self-guided tour to spot all the handpainted squirrel statues around town.
With so many shops and restaurants nearby, it’s easy to turn any visit into a full afternoon. Families can grab lunch, enjoy coffee or sweet treats, or browse for gifts and bargains. Each Saturday, the Austin Street Market hosts local makers and growers selling handmade items, baked goods, art, produce, and unique finds. The Yellow Rose Artisan Market returns to Central Park on Saturday, December 27, with over 70 vendors. On December 20, the Winter Market at the Seguin School Yard features vendors, Santa photos, a marshmallow-eating contest, and much more. Stop by the Visitor Center to pick up a coupon sheet with discounts to some of the local businesses.
As evening arrives, visit Central Park to see the holiday décor. Sixteen Christmas trees decorated by local organizations line the walkways, each adding its own personality and charm. This year, a brand-new Christmas tree joins the display, generously donated by the Downtown Business Alliance using funds raised through the sale of Sip N Stroll mugs. Families can also enjoy new lighted photo spots including oversized presents, angel wings, and shining ornaments. The gazebo is wrapped in lights, making the entire park glow in a truly magical way.
This holiday break, Seguin offers something a little different from the hustle of the season: the chance to slow down, explore, and enjoy small experiences that create lasting memories.

Santa, continued.
“Most of what we do is a team effort. When I’m available, I love to participate in it. I’m glad that I was able to be a part of this. I think it’s very important that we value the older members of our community. It’s just exciting. I love seeing their faces. It’s joyful to me. It makes me happy. Just bringing them simple gifts is a very small token of kindness that we can do for them and just to see how much it brightens their day,” said Janel.
The visit is part of a countywide effort that brings joy to some of Guadalupe County’s most vulnerable residents during the holiday season. Businesses and individuals from across the community donated checks to help purchase the gifts -- small tokens designed to brighten the season and remind residents they are not forgotten.
As Sheriff Ray played the role of Santa, deputies and Sheriff’s Office employees filled in as elves, assisting with deliveries and breaking into classic Christmas songs along the way. Smiles spread quickly, and for many residents, the visit offered a moment of connection, laughter, and holiday nostalgia.
For Sheriff Ray, the tradition carries even more special meaning during his first holiday season leading the office -- especially with Mrs. Claus by his side.
Sheriff Ray says having his wife join him as Mrs. Claus made the experience even more special and reinforced what the tradition is all about.
“I think that Guadalupe County has seen that Janel and I have a strong marriage and it’s because we do
everything together. It’s us. I’ve said this time and time again that I am who I am because of her and this is just a continuation of who Josh and Janel Ray are. We do these things together and I’m fortunate and blessed to have the wife and the marriage that we do and we try to be a good representation of that to our community. Marriage is under attack both in the secular world and in the spiritual world and we want to do our best to honor God in our marriage and I hope we are doing that for the county,” said Ray.
He says moments like these help define the broader role his office plays in the community beyond law enforcement. He says its reestablishing connections with our most seasoned residents.
“As usual, being a veteran, what hits home for me is the veterans from wars and combats long ago. That’s always humbling for me to have those conversations and hear about their experiences. Veterans are special to me and they will always be,” said Ray.
Seguin Assisted Living was just one of the first stops, marking the beginning of several Santa Sheriff visits scheduled this week. Residents across Guadalupe County will continue to see Santa—and Mrs. Claus— making their rounds as the Sheriff’s Office completes deliveries to nursing homes and assisted living centers later on this week.
And while the red suit may be temporary, the message behind the tradition – a tradition originally started by former Sheriff Arnold Zwicke -- remains clear: service, compassion, and community will always be at the heart of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office -- especially during the holidays.

Wayne Bothe, age 75 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on November 23, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born and raised in Seguin and was a proud 1968 graduate of Seguin High School.
He lived his life with grit, humor, and stubborn determination. Those who knew him will forever remember his ever-ready smart-ass comments, sharp wit, and the sound of his laughter echoing through the house - and the garage.
Though officially retired, Wayne could never sit still - unless he received the text, “Football and ‘seegars’ at Skip’s,” or it was time for the Thursday night “Holy Smokes” group. He greatly enjoyed sharing a cigar, swapping stories, catching up on neighborhood news, and talking sports with his tight-knit circle of friends.
He worked hard his entire life and took pride in his career as a truck driver. He spent more than 30 years driving everyday to Miller Brewing Company in Fort Worth. At home, he was a talented mechanic, always working on his own projects or helping friends with cars and tractors. Whether on the road or in the garage, his work reflected the same determination, and pride that defined him. No matter how long it took him to complete a project, he made sure it was
always done right.
Despite a life full of hard work, Wayne’s greatest joy came from the people and companions he loved most - his family and the four-legged friends who followed him everywhere. The garage is quieter now, and the house a little too still, but we take comfort knowing he is finally at peace. His voice, his humor, and his generous heart will live on in our memories. We loved him deeply, and we will miss him beyond measure.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Martha Ann Bothe. He is survived by the people he cherished most in this world: his wife, Lynn Bothe; his daughter, Alexandrea Bothe, and her husband, Scott Brown; his sons, Colton Bothe and his fiancée, Megan Younker; and Matthew Bothe.
Wayne’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Hope Hospice, and especially to his primary nurse, Karra, whose compassion, humor, and ability to match his quick wit brought him comfort and reassurance during his final weeks. The family is also deeply grateful for the support and kindness shown by friends and neighbors during this time. Every thoughtful gesture has meant more than words can express.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice of New Braunfels. Donations can be made at: https://www.hopehospice.net/donate
You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
