Where Santa Stories Meet Mrs. Clause Claire Beall: Remembering the good ole days

Claire shares holiday memories with Sheriff Santa a.k.a Guadalupe County Sheriff Joshua Ray and Mrs. Sheriff Santa (wife Janel Ray) during a visit to Avir at Walnut Springs, telling the couple she once served as Mrs. Claus alongside her late husband, longtime Santa Charles Beall. The emotional meeting brought back decades of Christmas traditions and community joy. See story on page 2.

A Christmas full circle: Former Mrs. Claus meets Mr. and Mrs. Santa Sheriff

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- When Santa Sheriff recently made his way through the hallways of Avir at Walnut Springs on North King Street, the visit unfolded just as many others do during the holidays — with gift bags, carols, smiles, and warm greetings. But one unexpected moment stopped him in his boots while on the way out. As Sheriff Santa, a.k.a. Guadalupe County Sheriff Joshua Ray and Mrs. Claus moved through the facility, staff wheeled a resident into the hallway at her request. Claire, escorted by her home health nurse, had heard Santa was in the building and insisted she must see him. And that reason quickly became clear. That’s because meeting Sheriff Santa and his wife Janel Ray brought back a lifetime of cherished memories for Claire -- memories of her late husband, Charles Beall, a man many families knew simply as Santa. For more than 25 years, Beall portrayed Santa Claus across South Texas, including a celebrated 15-plus-year run as the beloved North Star Mall Santa in San Antonio. Together, Claire and Charles -- married for 57 years -- shared countless holiday seasons spreading joy, with Claire often serving proudly as Mrs. Claus by his side. Claire says this week’s visit was no doubt an emotional reunion of some of her happiest moments. “I happen to be Mrs. Claus — a pretty close connection,” said Claire with a smile. “It was crazy but wonderful. He was a perfect Santa. He loved doing it. He loved the children and he looked forward to it every year, even though it was very hard on him at times, the long hours, but he enjoyed it very much.” Claire says her husband’s message to children was

always the same. She says he always made sure they knew how deeply loved they were. Again, seeing Sheriff Santa and Mrs. Sheriff Santa in the hallway instantly stirred those memories. Claire says she wanted to meet them personally so she could thank the couple for continuing a tradition that meant so much to her family and to so many others. “That was awesome,” said Claire after the visit. “I wanted to thank them because they do an awesome job.” The Bealls’ holiday legacy extended well beyond mall appearances. The couple is also remembered for their community contributions in Seguin and the many children they encountered over the decades. In 1986, Charles Beall even wrote and produced a holiday record titled A Visit from Santa, further cementing their place in Christmas history for many families. The visit unfolded during one of several Santa Sheriff visits underway across Guadalupe County this holiday season. The effort is supported by businesses and individuals across the county who donated funds to help purchase gifts -- small tokens meant to brighten the season and remind residents they are not forgotten. Deputies and sheriff ’s office staff filled in as elves, singing and delivering red gift filled packages. For Sheriff Ray, moments like the one shared with Claire highlight the deeper purpose behind the tradition -- strengthening connections with the community’s most seasoned residents and honoring the memories that live on through the holidays. Santa Sheriff is hoping to make his final rounds of holiday cheer this Friday at remaining nursing homes and assisted living centers across Guadalupe County.

Nativity, continued. That’s according to Kim Kauitzsch, children’s ministry leader at Faith Lutheran Church. Kauitzsch says the event has become a cherished tradition for the congregation and the community alike. “This is our fifth or sixth year to do it. Our youth pastor actually started it. One of our congregation members had done it up in her congregation in the North and so we started it and it’s just a chance to share the true meaning of Christmas and Jesus’ birth with the community and our own congregation members,” said Kauitzsch. Kauitzsch explained that the drive-through format allows families to enjoy the nativity from the comfort of their vehicles while still engaging fully with the story being told. “It is, I believe, the only drive through here in Seguin. So, it’s a chance for you to stay in your car and drive through our east parking lot and we are going to have seven stations that lead up to the stable and Jesus’ birth. We are going to hand out some candy canes, and we are actually going to have a flier that has the Scriptures on them but there will also be signs that depict where in the Bible you find that scene or station,” said Kauitzsch. To ensure traffic flows smoothly and safely, Kauitzsch says the church has coordinated additional parking and volunteers to guide visitors through the experience. “We are going to try to keep people off of the roadway so if you come and there is a line of cars, we are going to ask that they go through the Goldie Harris

parking lot. The high school is being generous enough to let us use their lot and we are going to have people out there guiding you through that so we can keep you off the street,” said Kauitzsch. Kauitzsch added that the event is especially meaningful for the church’s youth, many of whom eagerly look forward to participating each year. “My youth love doing it every year. They get excited because they want to dress up and share the story and I just feel like there has been more of a reception the last several years. The years when we were out at the Big Red Barn, they got to do a hayride and that was a lot of fun but the kids just love being a part of it. Some of them have grown up doing it and we have some even adults who will step in if need be so it’s just a great way to share the love of Jesus with our community,” said Kauitzsch. The Saturday night Drive-Through Living Nativity is free and open to all. The church is located at 1326 E. Cedar St. across from Seguin High School.

Truck, continued. The festive tradition will be the first for families across McQueeney, offering a simple but meaningful way to celebrate. Fire Chief J. Harmon of the McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department says the event is more about holiday lights and sirens -it’s about connection. “We are in the start-up season of trying to celebrate next year. It’s going to be our 50th anniversary of actually being in service and helping our community. We hope to go for another 50 years more but it’s a good milestone. I want to make sure the community knows where we are at with our history. So, Santa is going to make his appearance and try to listen to some of the community. We usually adopt a couple of families during Christmas time, so we are just trying to reach out and touch base with our community and see if there is something we can help

them in return,” said Harmon. He says as the fire truck rolls through neighborhoods, Santa will be waving to children and families gathered along the route. He says there will also be times for truck visits and photos with Santa. Although they have a route in place, Harmon says the McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department encourages families to follow and monitor its Facebook page for the most up-to-date route information, timing updates, and any last-minute changes to the event. “We are going to start down at our McQueeney Station 2 which is

going to be at 1625 Walnut Drive in the McQueeney Estates subdivision. We will have a couple of trucks out there showing off and showcasing one of our brand-new 2022 trucks. Not that most haven’t seen it already but like I said, just trying to get out there in front of everybody. We are going to go through there. We are going to make our way most likely – I believe – we are going to finish up on the Bandit Golf Course Monday (Dec.22). Tuesday, we are going to start and go through the Long Creek RV Park- Grove Lane Subdivision which I think is called Cypress Grove and then, we are going to go down Altwein – back into Altwein – there is a little neighborhood back there in our area. We just want to make sure that we touch base with all the kiddos,” said Harmon. Because routes may vary each night, residents are reminded that flexibility is key, especially with weather or emergency calls potentially affecting timing.

always done right. Despite a life full of hard work, Wayne’s greatest joy came from the people and companions he loved most - his family and the four-legged friends who followed him everywhere. The garage is quieter now, and the house a little too still, but we take comfort knowing he is finally at peace. His voice, his humor, and his generous heart will live on in our memories. We loved him deeply, and we will miss him beyond measure. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Martha Ann Bothe. He is survived by the people he cherished most in this world: his wife, Lynn Bothe; his daughter, Alexandrea Bothe, and her husband, Scott Brown; his sons, Colton Bothe and his fiancée, Megan Younker; and Matthew Bothe. Wayne’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Hope Hospice, and especially to his primary nurse, Karra, whose compassion, humor, and ability to match his quick wit brought him comfort and reassurance during his final weeks. The family is also deeply grateful for the support and kindness shown by friends and neighbors during this time. Every thoughtful gesture has meant more than words can express. Wayne Bothe, age 75 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on November 23, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born and raised in Seguin and was a proud 1968 graduate of Seguin High School. He lived his life with grit, humor, and stubborn determination. Those who knew him will forever remember his ever-ready smart-ass comments, sharp wit, and the sound of his laughter echoing through the house - and the garage. Though officially retired, Wayne could never sit still - unless he received the text, “Football and ‘seegars’ at Skip’s,” or it was time for the Thursday night “Holy Smokes” group. He greatly enjoyed sharing a cigar, swapping stories, catching up on neighborhood news, and talking sports with his tight-knit circle of friends. He worked hard his entire life and took pride in his career as a truck driver. He spent more than 30 years driving everyday to Miller Brewing Company in Fort Worth. Cardiologists Say Holiday Heart Syndrome Is Triggered By Excess Alcohol (Undated) -- Cardiologists say Holiday Heart Syndrome is real and is often triggered by excess alcohol consumption this time of year. It involves cardiac complications that may include atrial fibrillation, which is when the heart is beating irregularly, often rapidly. It can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness and in some cases, stroke. Research shows there’s an increase in deaths from heart-related issues between Christmas and New Year’s. Aside from excess alcohol, frigid temperatures and holiday stress are also said to contribute to Holiday Heart Syndrome. Nationwide Recall Of Nasal Spray Due To Microbial Contamination Expands (Albuquerque, NM) -- A nationwide recall for a homeopathic nasal spray is expanding. MediNatura, based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is widening the initial recall it issued just a week ago over yeast and mold found in one lot of ReBoost Nasal Spray. Now, the company says, it’s recalling all lots of ReBoost as well as its ClearLife Allergy Nasal Spray because of concerns about microbial contamination that could pose lifethreatening complications in people who are immunocompromised. The recalled products were sold all over the country at stores and through online sales. NJ Rejects CDC Guidelines On Hepatitis Vaccine For NewBorns (Trenton, NJ) -- New Jersey is rejecting new CDC guidelines that allow parents to say “no” to giving their newborns the Hepatitis B vaccine. It took the state Health Department less than 24-hours to push back on Tuesday’s guidance by the CDC recommending that the initial Hepatis B dose be administered at age two-months or later, rather than at birth. It cited the importance of informed consent. Universal Hepatitis B guidelines implemented nationwide in 1991 called for newborns to be vaccinated within 24 hours of birth. Governor Phil Murphy says that policy has saved countless of newborns from infections and deaths. A series of Hep B shots are required in New Jersey for kids to enter kindergarten. Salad Dressing Recalled Over ‘Foreign Objects’ (Irvine, CA) -- Thousands of cases of salad dressing are being recalled due to the presence of “foreign objects.” More than three-thousand-500 cases of salad dressing, including the popular Hidden Valley Buttermilk Ranch and Italian, were recalled because “black plastic planting material” was found in the dressing’s granulated onion. The dressings were distributed to seven retailers across 42 locations including Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Texas. The FDA said the recall from California-based Ventura Foods was initiated on November 11th and identified as a “Class Two” on December 4th, meaning exposure to the product could lead to temporary and adverse health consequences.
