Suspect surrenders after barricading himself in apartment Investigation continues in man’s possible involvement in armed robbery case custody without incident at around 12:15 p.m.
(Seguin) – A wanted suspect remains behind bars after barricading himself inside a local apartment Wednesday morning. Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols says after finally being convinced to walk outside his apartment door, the suspect, Israel Moreno, 23, of Seguin was taken into
“We’ve been looking for a man by the name of Israel Moreno, a 23-year-old Seguin resident, to serve a stalking warrant on him from a case that we’ve been working on. Unrelated to that incident, early this (Wednesday) morning about 5 o’clock, there was an incident involving a robbery where Mr. Moreno was a suspect in that robbery. He was tracked back to his residence in the apartment complex at 1439 Barnes Dr, the Oak Hollow Apartments. We used the Guadalupe County SWAT Team which is made up of the Seguin Police Department and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s
Department as well as the crisis negotiators because there was a violent crime this morning. It was a robbery involving a handgun and we just didn’t want to take any chances. So, we did what we call a surrounding call-out and tried to get him surrender. After about an hour, an hour and a half, he did begin to talk to negotiators and he did peacefully surrender without incident,” said Nichols. Nichols says police detectives continue to question Moreno and investigate exactly what happened early Wednesday morning. “We are interviewing people right now as we speak both him, the suspect as well as a witness and the victim
to find out exactly what happened. We do know that it seemed to have revolved around a vehicle. We believe other property was taken at gunpoint as well. We are executing a search warrant at the Oak Hollow Apartment where he was barricaded in and to see if we could recover any of the stolen property and/or the weapon in the apartment. This is still only an investigation. There are no official charges that we are going to be filing on that investigation at this point, at this minute that we are talking. He is under arrest for the warrant for stalking from the earlier incident and we will continue this investigation to see if additional charges will be filed,” said Nichols.
Nichols says he applauds the efforts of the Guadalupe County Swat Team as well as his team of Seguin PD officers for getting the job done quickly and safely. “Especially violent crimes, we take the attitude that we jump on these very quickly. The quicker you can jump on a crime like this and try starting to get it resolved, the quicker we can get a violent suspect off the street. Once we knew where the suspect was, we had eyes on the apartment by about 7:15 this morning (Wednesday), watching the apartment to make sure that the suspect did not leave. The ultimate goal is a peaceful resolution to the whole situation. So,
once we got all the wheels in motion in getting the negotiators involved and the SWAT involved, it looks like a huge show to people watching and it is a large presence but it is very coordinated. We were using drones. We were using Facetime. We were using phones, every technology available to simply try to communicate and bring this whole situation to a peaceful resolution which ultimately it did,” said Nichols. Due to Oak Hollow’s proximity to local schools, both Barnes and Koennecke Elementary Schools initiated their respective security plans keeping kids and staff safe throughout the incident.
