Pair of business staples in Marion to celebrate 50 years Darren Dunn

(Marion) -- If you ask Karen Scheffel, the owner of Helping Hand Hardware in Marion, about opening the business next door to Penshorn's Meat Market during the same year 50 years ago, she will tell you that it was just a coincidence. That coincidence, however, has since evolved into a long lasting business relationship -- a relationship now described as the heart of the city.

A 50 year celebration is in store this weekend for the neighboring businesses located on San Antonio St. in Marion. As part of the celebration, the businesses on Saturday will be serving free sausage wraps while supplies last. Both will also be hosting special drawings.

Scheffel says for her, the celebration is a look back over the decades and the customers who have stood by them along the way.

"It's been a great success because of our customers. We enjoy providing the supplies that customers need to do their job and we feel very fortunate when we can help them and we have great employees and we have a great community and we get business from all over.

Two spooktacular events slated for tonight at TLU Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- TLU students will again be loading up their trunks for Seguin’s ghosts and goblins. In fact this year, not only are local kids invited to Texas Lutheran University’s annual Boo Bash Trunk-or-Treat Extravaganza but they are also invited to spend part of their visit next door in the Moody Science Complex for a whole new event called “STEM is Not Scary: An UnHaunted Open House.” The event, designed for middle and high school students, will illustrate why science isn’t

scary through special hands-on science demonstrations.

TLU officials say the two spooktacular events are free and will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m.

The lines for both the Boo Bash and Un-Haunted Open House will begin in the Tschoepe Hall parking lot. The area can be accessed on the south end of the campus just off of West Court Street.

Parking for tonight’s events is available anywhere throughout the campus.

Pecan Fest to include pub crawl, pecan cracking contest Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- It's either get "crawlin" or get "crackin" at this year's Pecan Fest Heritage Days. Among the number of activities scheduled for this weekend's Pecan Fest Heritage Days in downtown Seguin are the annual Hats Off to Juan Seguin Pub Crawl and Get "Crackin" Contest.

Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street Program and CVB director, says the Get "Crackin" contest allows folks who think they can shell the most nuts to put those skills to the test.

"Anyone is eligible to participate in our Get 'Crackin' Contest. It's at 1 o'clock on Saturday in Central Park.

So, the way it works, is you get two minutes to shell as many pecans as possible. There will be prizes for first, second and third. It's just a fun two

minute competition and whoever can shell the most pecans, gets the prize," said Kramm.

Owner Kim Penshorn says she and husband Robert just officially took sole possession of the company earlier this year after her brother-in-law Elroy chose to retire.

She says the two brothers had been operating the business together ever since it was gifted to them by their parents Leroy and Leona Penshorn in 2010.

Kim says family is everything and believes that Penshorn's has not only been the key component for keeping her own family together but also becoming a foundation for the Marion family.

"I think it's amazing. My husband said he started working here like when he was 8 and he wanted to stay until it turned 50 and continue the family business and tradition means a lot to him so it was very important," said Kim. As for the success of the business, Kim says the answer is easy.

"It's our loyal customers. We have some of the best customers around and community.

Marion has a wonderful community. We are tight knit and always willing to help each other out and that means a lot," said Kim. The celebration will begin at both businesses at 10 a.m. Saturday. Festivities will continue until 1 p.m. or until food runs out.

TLU Volleyball Defeats Southwestern to Complete Undefeated Home Season Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Marketing

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Volleyball beat Southwestern 25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, to clinch their first undefeated season at Memorial Gymnasium since 2004 on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs conclude their home slate 6-0 for the sixth undefeated home season in program history.

The match marked the final home regular season match for seniors Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/ Smithson Valley), Emily Mixon (Woodville/ Woodville), and Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/ New Braunfels).

Moehrig had 14 kills and eight digs in the match.

Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) matched Moehrig with a match-high 14 kills and added four blocks (two solo).

Keriann Kallus also had a night with nine kills, seven digs, four blocks (one solo), and a service ace.

Victoria Powell (Richmond/Fulshear) finished with six kills and joined Kallus and Nedd with four blocks (one solo).

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) had 27 assists, 21 digs, four kills, three kills and one ace. The double-double marks her 23rd doubledouble in 25 matches this season. Faith Coldewey (Floresville/Floresville) led the Bulldogs with 27

digs to go with three assists and two aces. Freshman Richelle Guerra (Brownsville/Rivera Early College) matched her career-high with 20 digs.

The Bulldogs - who entered Tuesday third in the nation in total digs and and leading the country in digs per set - finished with 107 digs in total with three players eclipsing 20 digs.

The first set was back-and-forth to start featuring seven ties early. Following a Southwestern timeout, TLU would go on an 8-4 run to take a 22-15 lead to force a second Pirates timeout. The Bulldogs would take the opening set 25-18 led by seniors Moehrig and Kallus who had four kills each.

The Pirates, who host the 2023 SCAC Volleyball Tournament and were fighting for their SCAC Tournament bid, tied the match up with a 26-24 win in the second set. Texas Lutheran led 20-15 before the Pirates would battle back to tie the set 24-all before taking the set 26-24.

Texas Lutheran held off another Southwestern rally in the third set to win it 25-22, using a 4-0 run to finish the set. The Bulldogs got four kills from Moehrig and Nedd in the set, including three kills from Moehrig for three of the final four points to close the set.

The fourth set saw the Bulldogs in complete control - never looking back after a 6-6 tie early in the set. A 10-3 run from Texas Lutheran would force a Southwestern timeout as the Bulldogs stretched out to a 16-9 lead. The Pirates would not go down easy but TLU would put the match away, 25-18, closed out by senior Keriann Kallus - who also celebrated her birthday on Tuesday. Kallus, Moehrig and Nedd all had three kills in the final set.

Following the match, Texas Lutheran recognized its three seniors in senior day festivities celebrating their contributions to the TLU Volleyball program.

The Bulldogs will travel to Sherman, Texas, for their final SCAC Divisional weekend starting with a match against Centenary College at 1:15 PM on Saturday, Oct. 28. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Forrest Wayne Gunckel, 68, of Seguin, Texas, lost his battle with cancer on September 17, 2023. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Forrest expressed his love for his family and said, “Ive had a good run and I’m going to see my buddies.”

Forrest was born on February 2, 1955 at the former Gary AFB in San Marcos, Texas, to Shirley Rose Schultz Gunckel (daughter of August (Pat) and Rosa Schultz), and Larry Wayne Gunckel. He spent most of his childhood years at his father’s military assignments, settling in Seguin, Texas upon his father’s retirement from the Air Force.

Forrest attended Seguin High School, working part-time for the Koehler Company. After high school, as a full-time employee, he quickly acquired cabinet making skills and demonstrated that he was a talented craftsman. In his early 20’s, Forrest decided to start his own business and went on to have a successful career as the owner of Gunckel Architectural Millworks. As the business grew, he acquired a warehouse at the company’s current location on West Kingsbury Street. He set it up with state-of-the-art equipment and

began to take on large commercial projects. With a passion for woodwork, he dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft and becoming a successful entrepreneur. His dedication and expertise in his field were highly regarded by his colleagues and clients.

Even though business was his primary interest throughout his life, Forrest still found time for other pursuits and had a passion for golf, fishing, gardening and cooking, with a special talent for barbecuing. Forrest’s dream was to retire in Rockport, where he could fish to his heart’s content. It is there that his final resting place will be, with his ashes to be scattered at sea.

Forrest had a vibrant personality and was especially known for his wit and sense of humor. He had a special bond with his dog, Jax, who brought him immense joy and companionship. Forrest will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Linsey Amstead; son-in-law, Brent Amstead; and grandkids Kylee and Asher. He leaves behind his father, Larry Gunckel; and stepmother, Jodi Gunckel; sisters, Cindy and husband Avery Curnel, Terry Atkinson and partner Jim Roe; and stepsister, Cathi Barnes. He is preceded by his mother, Shirley Gunckel; and brother, Gary Gunckel.

A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor and remember Forrest’s life on October 28th at 12 p.m. a Faith Lutheran Church, 1326 E. Cedar St. in Seguin, Texas. In lieu of floweres, the family request that memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Eunice and Lee Mortuary for Carmen Castillo who died Tuesday at the age of 85. She is survived by her daughter, Yolanda Castillo, and her son, Rudy Castillo.

Georgia High Court Upholds Six-Week Abortion Ban (Atlanta, GA) -- The Georgia Supreme Court is upholding the state’s six week abortion ban. The court released the ruling Tuesday morning that sends challenges back to the lower courts. First passed by the state in 2019, the law prohibits abortion after six weeks, which is when a fetal heartbeat can generally be detected. The law could not go into effect until the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision, which happened last year. .

Judge Blocks State Of Colorado From Enforcing Abortion-Reversal Ban (Denver, CO) -- A federal judge is blocking the state of Colorado from enforcing a law that bans health clinics from using a procedure meant to reverse medically induced abortions. A U.S. District Court judge announced the ruling Saturday, saying there are religious freedom issues surrounding the law that the state has yet to answer. The preliminary injunction applies only to one Catholic health clinic that sued the state over the new law. The state will have 30 days to appeal the ruling to the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

West Texas Lawmakers Push Pro Life Policy (Lubbock, TX) -- Lubbock County in Texas has passed an abortion travel ban. It prohibits traveling on the roads to get an abortion in another state.

Today’s vote was part of a large push to reaffirm Lubbock County as “sanctuary county for the unborn.” The county attorney admits that the ban will likely trigger lawsuits. Lubbock County is located in the western part of the state, about 90 miles east of the New Mexico border.

McConnell Says He’s “Completely Recovered” Following Freezing Incidents (Washington, DC) -- Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell says he’s “completely recovered” from health issues that led him to freeze while while taking questions from reporters. McConnell said he’s “in good shape” and is back on the job during an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

McConnell froze up while taking questions from reporters on Capitol Hill, and in a separate incident in his home state of Kentucky. The episodes after McConnell suffered a concussion from a fall during a dinner in March. Doctors ruled out a stroke or seizure

(Seguin) -- The Mid-Texas Symphony introduces its Debutante and Escort class of Seguin for the 2023-2024 Season. The program is an educational and fundraising outreach for the Symphony. The participating students learn things such as money management, party planning, college preparation plus other young life building skills.

This class is composed of local junior and senior high school students. The current class attends Lifegate Christian School, Navarro High School and Seguin High School. DEA National Take Back Initiative The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, in collaborative efforts with the Drug Enforcement Agency(DEA) will be hosting its National Take Back Initiative from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 in front of the two-story Sheriff’s Office entrance located at 2617 N. Guadalupe St. in Seguin. This is a one-day opportunity for persons to dispose of unwanted or unused prescription drugs.

A deputy will be on hand to take the substances to be disposed of with no questions asked. Only solid pharmaceutical products in consumer containers will be accepted.

Liquids or syringes/needles, vapes, or batteries will not be accepted. Only pills and patches are accepted.

Youth Co-Ed Basketball League Registration is underway for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Co-Ed Basketball League.
