Deadline arrives to register to vote

Today marks last day to make a change in address (Seguin) -- If you don’t want to be turned away from the polls on November 3 and prevented from voting for the next U.S. President, then today is the day to take some action. Today is the deadline to register to vote. Lisa Hayes, Guadalupe County Elections Administrator, says this reminder is for anyone who has not yet registered and for those of us who know a few procrastinators. “So, this is an important day for voters to know about because if they are not currently registered to vote and they want to vote in the November Election, this is their last chance to register. So, our office hours today are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and voters are encouraged to come in and register if they are not already registered. If they want to mail in a voter registration application that is also okay, but they have to know that it must be postmarked by Oct. 5. So, just having it in their hand today is not enough. If they are mailing it, it must be postmarked by Oct. 5,” said Hayes.

out of the county, then they need to register in their new county. If they moved within the county, then they need to give us their updated address because your ballot style is determined by the address on your voter registration. So, if they moved across town, they may have a different ballot style at their new address than they did at their old address and the ballot issued is always for the address we have on record,” said Hayes. Hayes says not only will staff members be on hand today to help register people, but they will also help double check if someone isn’t sure. “They can register by walking it into our office and picking up an application and filling out and leaving it with us or they can go to votetexas.gov., print one out off of the secretary of state’s website and mail it,” said Hayes. Voter registration applications can be picked up at either the Seguin Elections Office located at 215 S. Milam or at the Schertz Elections Office at 1101 Elbel, Schertz. Voters, again, can also go to votetexas.gov and use the SOS online voter registration application.

In addition, Hayes says today is also the last day to ensure that all registered voters get the right ballot. She says this is especially important for those who have recently moved.

Now if you choose to mail in your application, officials ask that you consider going into the post office instead of dropping it off in the blue mail boxes outside to ensure the Oct. 5 postmark.

“If they are changing their address, if they’ve moved, they still need to update their address. If they’ve moved

Early voting for the Nov. 3 election begins on Tuesday, Oct.13.
