(Seguin) -- More major upgrades are coming to Seguin’s Manuel Castilla Park.
The park, located at the corner of Guadalupe and Martindale streets, recently received a new large pavilion — thanks to the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class.
Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says that partnership with the leadership class has sparked some additional improvements to be made soon by the city.
Jones says the park will get a totally new playground, which will replace an outdated and undersized playscape currently in place.
“What’s out there now is not our standards today. It’s 23 years old. It’s got pea gravel that needs to go. We have been working with recreation consultant Jeff Mankins with Play & Park Structures of Southern Texas, the same folks that did Bauer Park, the same folks that did Starke Park recently --very good company. And I said, I just want something different
this time. I need something that’s really going to pop and stand out because now with Castilla Park, if you look at the map, it is almost dead center of Seguin.
A lot of people go there to play tackle football, jog on the track, cheerlead, picnics, you name it.
A lot of stuff happens out there at the park, so I want it special,” said Jones.
Jeff Mankins, a recreation consultant with Play & Park Structures in San Antonio, helped to come up with the new design.
“We’re actually bringing in a GFRC tree. GFRC simply stands for glass fiber reinforced concrete. So, it’s a hand painted tree trunk that handles an eightfoot deck. And within that, we have a painted squirrel. We have a little owl. So, there’s some cute things for your kiddos to find,” said Mankins.
Mankins says the new playground will be all-inclusive and it will be much larger than what’s currently in Manuel Castilla Park.

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center (GCCAC) is raising the stakes for local children in need with its annual fundraising event, “Viva Las Vegas Casino Night.” The event is set for Saturday night at The Big Red Barn.
While the evening will be filled with games, food, auctions, and prizes, its purpose goes far beyond entertainment. That’s according to Christy Williams, the advocacy center’s executive director.
“For each admission, we are having really heavy Hors d’Oeuvres and dessert. There will be a cash bar but you will get to play the games that night. So, we are going to be playing casino games. They will be Las Vegas style. Also, for the first time, we will have slot machines. So, that will be fun and interesting to see how that plays out and we will have just some other games too for people who are not necessarily wanting to play at the casino games and we will also have prizes, live auction, silent auction and lots of fun,” said Williams.
She says the auctions alone have brought in some exciting items for people to bid on.
“We’ve got some really really awesome stuff. We’ve got signed guitars, Burnt Bean dinner for 10 with no wait. We’ve got a personal chef that will come and cook in your home. We have paintings. We’ve got pottery. We’ve got lots of neat alcoholic packages. There’s an Argentina dove hunt,” said Williams.
She says the event is a critical fundraiser for the GCCAC, which is on track to serve more than 900 children this year—an all-time high that reflects the growing need for
child advocacy and abuse prevention services in Guadalupe County and surrounding areas.
“When we did our numbers from last year and put out the pinwheel display (with each representing a child served) it was 903 and we are already on track this year for it to be more than that for 2025 and so we have 19 staff members and 8 interns working with those kiddos and families and trying to support them and we are trying to maintain and grow to meet the demands,” said Williams.
Williams says every dollar raised will support daily operations, from forensic interviews and trauma counseling to advocacy and case coordination. And all these services, she says are offered completely free to the families we serve.
“This fundraiser is going to be for general operating to help keep the center open and going and takes care of all of the expenses that we have that we aren’t able to grant funds for. We have to have really diverse income coming in as a nonprofit,” said Williams.
Doors open at 6 p.m., with game play running from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Featured will be interactive game tables, a live auction, silent auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and prizes.
General admission, which includes food and starter chips for play, is $50 a person. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet in Seguin, Stylin Hair Salon & Spa in Cibolo, KDJ Insurance in Marion and Vallance Security in Schertz.
Tickets will be available at the door, but pre-sale tickets are encouraged.
The Big Red Barn is located at 390 Cordova Rd.

(San Antonio) – Here’s one glowing getaway you don’t want to miss. SeaWorld San Antonio this summer is lighting up the night with its all-new AquaGlow event and it’s calling on Seguin to make that 40-minute drive to the West.
AquaGlow flips the traditional theme park experience of sweltering sun and long lines by offering this new nighttime fun every Friday and Saturday – now through August.
With “no wait times, pulsing DJ music, foam parties, bubbles, and an electrifying glow-in-the-dark ambiance,” SeaWorld says it is no doubt serving up those serious summer vibes.
Beginning at 8 p.m., the park transforms into a dazzling ocean of neon lights. Folks can also take advantage of short lines at all attractions and coasters. Tickets start at $39.99. VIP Glow party packages are also available.
Park, continued.
“We wanted kind of the fort look -- kind of an outdoor, just kind of all natural look. So, you have the eight foot deck with a fort. It has a 2 to 5 (year-old) play space and a 5 to 12 (year-old space). And then as we’ve, implemented per your request, inclusive play components and ramp structure so that all can play and be a part of the community and play,” said Mankins.
Mankins says much of the
structure will be shaded and it will also have some other fun unique features, that will enhance the overall experience for children at the playground.
This marks a major investment in Castilla Park.
The new playground will cost approximately $714,000.
Mankins says once the equipment is ordered, it will take a few months for the project to get started.
Typically, equipment can
ship out in about 6 to 8 weeks. And so, we obviously have the foundation that we have to do. We have to come in and bring some sidewalks and different things. If we place the order sooner than later, I would say three months –a three-to-four-month window. It would be kind of probably be a month long install once we get the equipment here,” said Mankins.
The purchase of the equipment for the new playground was approved during a recent meeting of the Seguin City Council.

A devoted Catholic, Lilia lived her faith daily and raised her children with the same values that guided her: kindness, compassion, humility, and strength. Her deep belief in God sustained her through life’s challenges and was evident in the way she loved and cared for others.

LangHelga Johanna Roth Lange, affectionately known as Johanna, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at the age of 87.
Johanna was born on July 21, 1937, in Winters, Texas, to Pastor Carl and Elner Roth. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; her older sister, Carolyn Roth Spillers; her devoted husband of 53 years, Pastor William Frederick Lange Jr.; and her beloved son, Christopher William Stuart Lange.
She leaves behind a loving legacy through her daughter, Debbie Tucker, and husband Jeff, and her son, Scott Lange, and his wife Tina and her daughter-inlaw, Nikki Lange. She was a proud and deeply cherished grandmother to ten grandchildren: Kristen Bigott and her husband Pastor Marcus Bigott, Courtney Eldridge, Garrett Eldridge, Kale Lange, Koby Lange and his wife Nicole, Phillip White and his wife Shawna, Isaiah White, Grayson and Cade Lange and Ashlyn Martz. She was also blessed with four precious great-granddaughters: Gracelyn, Emberlyn, Olivia, and Kimber. Sister, Jeanette Mayer and husband Bill and numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.
Johanna graduated from Seguin High School in 1956 and later earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Lutheran College. She went on to enjoy a fulfilling 22-year career at Seguin High School, where she taught physical science, biology, typing, and bookkeeping, touching the lives of countless students along the way.
A charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, Johanna faithfully stood by her husband’s side in ministry for 45 years as a dedicated pastor’s wife. She was especially beloved for her “Sand Box Stories” during Vacation Bible School and Sunday School—an interactive storytelling method she learned from her mother,
Elner. Many children, long into adulthood, fondly remembered how Johanna brought Bible stories to life using a simple sandbox. She joyfully passed this tradition on to others, ensuring it would be shared with future generations.
Among her proudest accomplishments was the restoration of one of her grandfather’s old country churches, which had been converted into a sheep shed. With the stained-glass windows still intact, Johanna purchased the structure and had it relocated to the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center. Now known as Zion Church, it continues to serve as a sacred space for weddings, baptisms, and worship services.
Johanna was known for many passions, including her famous homemade dill pickles, which she often taught others how to make. She found joy in gardening and in restoring antique trunks, often turning heirloom pieces into beautiful keepsakes. She had a deep love for history and often said she believed she had lived on the Oregon Trail in a past life—so much so that she once displayed an old wagon in her front yard before donating it to The Big Red Barn.
A memorial service celebrating Johanna’s life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas, on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Marcus Bigott and the Reverend Daniel Cave officiating. A reception will follow in the Life Enrichment Center (LEC).
Her ashes will be lovingly placed in the columbarium at Faith Lutheran Church beside her husband, Bill, and son, Chris, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William F. Lange Endowed Seminary Scholarship Fund at Faith Lutheran Church, 1326 E. Cedar, Seguin, Texas, 78155 or to The Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center, 390 Cordova Rd, Seguin, Texas, 78155, in honor of Johanna’s lifelong love for faith, family, and heritage.

Sherman Larry Vinyard, 82, passed away due to complications from Parkinson’s disease on Thursday, June 26, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. He was born July 1, 1942, in Seguin, Texas to Sherman and Cora (Stephens) Vinyard.
He grew up in Seguin, Texas and graduated from Texas Lutheran University with a degree in accounting. He served as a Colonel in the field artillery in the United States Army and the Texas Army National Guard for many decades, with service in the Republic of Vietnam from 1966-1967. He was inducted into the Field Artillery Hall of Fame at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 2008. He was awarded the Honorable Order of St. Barbara and the Ancient Order of St. Barbara for exceptional service and contributions to the U.S. Army Field Artillery.
He worked for the Texas State Auditors Office as a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, Chartered Global Management Accountant, Certified Government Financial Manager, Certified Fraud Examiner, and Certified Risk Management Assurance. He retired from the State Auditor’s office in 1996, but he was far from done working. He began teaching accounting courses at Austin Community College and doing consultant auditing work for Texas State University in San Marcos. His students consistently reported his classes were exceptionally difficult; however, he had the highest rate of students passing the CPA examination on the first attempt. After his time teaching and
consulting, he went to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2004 in the Office of Business Oversight as a Lead Auditor in the Internal Controls Service division. After four failed attempts, he officially retired from everything in September 2015, for real.
He absolutely LOVED all things baseball. He played in little league and pony league as a kid, then umpired baseball games, played softball with the State Auditor’s Office, and watched any baseball game on TV. If you asked him who he wanted to win he would always say, “I just want to see a good game.” He had a deep love for his country, a strong ethical character with integrity beyond reproach, was unwaveringly determined, and incessantly stubborn.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Sherman and Cora Vinyard, brother-in law Stephen Anthony Alblinger and sister-in-law Lloydine Vinyard. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Naomi Vinyard; daughters Carolyn Brown and her husband Daryl, and Rachel Hayse and her husband Ryan; grandchildren Ellie Brown, Wyatt Hayse, and Duncan Hayse, and brothers Jerry Vinyard and Keith Vinyard and his wife Fran. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.
A visitation will be held Friday, July 11, 2025 in Georgetown, TX at the Ramsey Funeral Home & Crematorium from 4-6pm with a brief service following. A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Moulton City Cemetery, Saturday July 12th at 10:30 am with lunch to follow at the American Legion in Moulton, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to The Salvation Army or the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation.

However, a South Carolina doctor said while the nimbus and stratus strains are active, he has not seen a major increase in COVID cases or hospitalizations so far. Dr. Paul Richardson also noted that the two new strains are less severe than earlier strains although symptoms may still be bothersome. According to Dr. Richardson, the best protection against viruses is washing your hands frequently.
(Undated) -- A new study is highlighting links between certain foods and disturbed sleep. Researchers from the University of Montreal surveyed over one-thousand students to explore the connection between diet and sleep quality and discovered that consuming dairy products was associated with nightmares and poor sleep quality. It is hypothesized that lactose intolerance can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort which disrupts sleep and affects dreams. While the study highlights a strong link between lactose intolerance and nightmares, the overall relationship between diet and sleep remains unclear as further research is needed.
