Volunteers came out in full force Saturday for the annual Build for Better Bash at Texas Lutheran University. The fundraising event for Habitat for Humanity successfully included the wall build for Habitat’s 50th home in Guadalupe County. (Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is set to consider tonight what district officials say could be a new exciting early childhood education initiative.
Trustees will review a proposed partnership pilot between Seguin ISD and the Will Smith Zoo School (WSZS), an innovative early learning program operated by the San Antonio Zoo.
If approved, the partnership would establish a nature-based pre-kindergarten program at the district’s Irma Lewis Outdoor Learning Center (ILOLC), along with co-enrollment opportunities for Seguin ISD students at the WSZS campus in San Antonio.
The pilot program aims to expand early childhood education options for local families while leveraging the unique outdoor and nature-based curriculum that the Zoo School is known for.
Officials say the program will enhance community access to outdoor learning, provide an entry point into the district for non-traditional learners, and open new avenues for funding through a public-private partnership model.
According to the proposal, the district would provide classroom space at the ILOLC, while WSZS would staff and operate the program. Up to 40 students could be served at the Seguin site.
A separate group of Seguin students would be eligible for co-enrollment at the San Antonio campus. If approved, the program could potentially see its first students this August.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Administration Building located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.

(Seguin) — A Guadalupe County man is behind bars after sheriff’s deputies uncovered weapons and large amounts of drugs during an investigation into a violent assault.
On Thursday, deputies with the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) responded to reports of an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 2200 block of FM 467. Investigators with the GCSO Criminal Investigations Division (CID) quickly identified the suspect as Jorge Erik Segura, a 20-year-old resident of Guadalupe County.
Following a series of interviews, CID investigators obtained a felony arrest warrant for Segura. That same day, the GCSO SWAT team executed a search warrant at the residence where the alleged assault occurred.
Inside the home, officials say
investigators recovered key evidence related to the assault. They also discovered a stockpile of weapons, including four pistols and one assault-style pistol. During the search, deputies also uncovered what authorities describe as evidence of illegal drug distribution.
Seized at the scene were 216 grams of THC vape cartridges, 310 grams of THC-infused edibles, 76 grams of psilocybin (commonly known as psychedelic mushrooms), and additional materials tied to drug trafficking activity.
Segura was taken into custody and booked into the Guadalupe County Jail. Charges include Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Possession with Intent to Distribute Controlled Substances.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Headlining the party this year will be Clint Taft and the Buck Wild Band, joining him on stage will be Clint’s very own son, Colton. Also ensuring a good time on his own dance floor will be crowd favorite D.J. DTrayne.
Not only will food trucks and non-profit food vendors be on hand but there will be plenty of family fun such as moon bounces, face painting, patriotic hair braiding, balloon animals, a petting zoo plus a “glowing” surprise during this year’s after-dark dance party!
Kingdom Rescue will also be on site with its pet adoption booth -- perfect for anyone looking to give a furry friend a forever home. Local arts and crafts vendors will also be on hand.
Kicking off the evening will again be the Guadalupe County Republican Women’s Kiddie Parade, led this year by none other than Uncle Sam himself -- aka Sheriff Joshua Ray. Kids are encouraged to decorate their strollers, wagons, bikes, skateboards or motorized vehicles and follow Uncle Sam as he leads them around Central Park. Prizes will be given to the top winners in the various categories.
Seguin Radio KWED has also teamed up with
Ruben James Reyes to give every participant in the Kiddie Parade a chance to win an exciting grand prize -- something big, fun, and sure to impress!
KWED General Manager Darren Dunn says this year’s event is going to be the best yet.
“Freedom Fiesta is our gift back to the community,” said Dunn. “It’s a night to hang out, have fun, and just enjoy being together.”
He also gives a big shout out to the event’s generous sponsors, saying,
“Without them, none of this would be possible. We’re incredibly blessed to have such strong support from the Seguin business community.”
Freedom Fiesta, this year, will help wrap up the list of Independence Day celebrations for the city of Seguin. Events leading up to the Saturday night celebration include the city’s Fireworks Fiesta on Thursday, July 3 and the Flag Raising and Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. Friday, July 4.

Brown was named the Class 4A Slugger of the Year by the THSCA. The recent Navarro graduate capped off his senior year as the District 26-4A Most Valuable Player for the Panthers this past season. On the mound, the right-hander was 9-0 with a 1.81 ERA. Brown struck out 103 batters in 65 and two-third innings pitched.
Schoenvogel earned a spot on the Class 3A Super Elite Team. This past season as a junior, Schoenvogel was selected the District 27-3A Co-MVP, taking home an MVP
award for the second straight season for the Marion baseball program. Schoenvogel started the 2025 campaign by tossing a no-hitter on opening day against Natalia on February 17th. At the plate, Schoenvogel led Marion in batting, hits, and runs. He was tied for the team lead in RBIs while leading the Bulldogs with a .536 average. Schoenvogel was recently selected to play for Team Texas at the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association High Plains Shootout to be held July 14-16 in Enid, Oklahoma.
The THSCA Super Elite Teams consist of high school players nominated by current professional members of the association. Nominations are reviewed and chosen by select committees which include 808 coaches in the eight THSCA regions throughout Texas. Based on the recommendations, the THSCA baseball advisory committee determines the final Super Elite Team selections.

More than anything, she loved watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow—cheering them on from the stands at ball games, applauding from the audience at performances, and celebrating every milestone with deep pride and affection.

Esther was a loving person. She always complimented people she was around. She loved her family and friends dearly. Her friends became family and with that came her joking personality. Esther adored her nieces, nephew, mom and dad with all her heart. Esther and her other half on weekends took riders through town garage sale browsing and just enjoying the scenery. Esther will always be remembered for her dinners with family, her pack of cigarettes, her Bush beer and her Dr. Pepper. Even though her journey on the earth was short, we loved her dearly and we will never forget her.

(Dallas, TX) -- The union representing mail carriers across the U.S. is warning about excessive summer heat. (Charlottesville, VA) -- Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine say a microscopic discovery could lead to new treatments for diseases like Alzheimer’s. Research conducted with assistance from the National Institutes of Health has identified a subcellular unit called the hemifusome [[ hemi-FEW-zohm ]]. Scientists say the unit is responsible for recycling old material and flushing it out of cells. A breakdown in that process can lead to the buildup of plaque that often leads to Alzheimer’s and other serious neurogenetic diseases. Researchers now plan to investigate the structure of hemifusomes in hopes of finding new therapies for those diseases.
