Marion ISD named School Board of the Year for Region 20

(Marion) -- A big congratulations is in order for the Marion ISD Board of Trustees, which has been selected as one of the top school boards in Texas.

The Marion school board has been named the 2024 Regional School Board of the Year for Education Service Center 20.

Marion ISD Superintendent Don Beck is thrilled by the recognition. Dr. Beck says this is a well-deserved recognition for this particular group of trustees.

“I can tell you, I was elated. It was a happy moment and yet a little bit surprised as we are a smaller district but the committee definitely saw through that and saw what the board had done over the last couple of years and justified that by naming us the board of the year,” said Beck.

Beck says the work of these trustees is not going unnoticed, especially when their small district is compared to much larger districts belonging to Region 20.

Freedom Fiesta announces food menu

Fourth of July celebration set for this Saturday

(Seguin) --  You will want to come hungry this Saturday to downtown Seguin. That’s because this year’s KWED Freedom Fiesta will be equipped with more food trucks and food booths than ever.

This year’s Fourth of July celebration will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Over the last several years, the corners of Central Park have been filled with popular food trucks. This year, approximately 15 food trucks will again roll into Downtown Seguin.

KWED’s Linda Duncan says the success of Freedom Fiesta has not only brought many of these food trucks back but also helped recruit new ones.

“Adding food trucks happened to us during the COVID years and they’ve stuck because people just enjoy having a variety of food to choose from,” said Duncan.

Food trucks and other for-profit food vendors include Mister Softee, The Dilly Deli, Any ‘Wich Way, Travelin’ Toms, UBP Burgers, Auntie Anne’s, Chick-fil-A, Dona Kika’s Tacos and Gorditas, Wiggle Waggle, Matengas Pizzeria, and Grouchy

Mamas and Sweet Rentals.

Duncan says several non-profit groups will also be serving up some of their tasty recipes for a good cause in addition to food trucks.

“One of the things that makes us so happy here at KWED is the way that we are able to give back during Freedom Fiesta to some of our nonprofit groups here in Seguin and we do that through food booths that these non-profits have and they are a great addition and I know that everyone likes to come out and support these non-profits,” said Duncan.

Sampling all the foods this year at Freedom Fiesta will be easy, as attendees will also enjoy a full night of other events.

The annual free Kiddie Parade, hosted by the Guadalupe County Republican Women, will kick off this Saturday at 6 p.m.

Kids are invited to walk or jump on their bikes, scooters or motorized vehicles for a trek around Central Park.

Brandon Michael will take the stage to provide live music.

A special section will also be available for dancing with music by DJ D Trayne.

This year’s event includes live gaming, moon bounces, balloon animals, face painting, and several vendors selling various items.

Those wishing to learn more about the ins and outs of the annual KWED Freedom Fiesta are encouraged to pick up this month’s magazine edition of Seguin Today.

Copies are available at various locations around town or here at Seguin Radio KWED.

Folks can also check it out online at SeguinToday.com.

This year’s 4th of July celebration will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 29 in downtown Seguin.

Freedom Fiesta always marks the official kickoff for the city of Seguin’s four-day 4th of July Celebration.

Freedom Fiesta will be followed with a Patriotic Concert on Sunday, June 30; the annual Fireworks Fiesta at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 and the Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade in Texas at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4.

“You are looking at schools from districts from the size of North East and Northside (ISD) all the way to small, 1A districts that are around here and we are sitting at 1,600 kids and we are on the smaller end of Region 20. I forget the exact number of school districts in this region but I do know there’s probably more than 50 school districts that could have applied and submitted information for that and we are just excited to be number one in the region,” said Beck.

Beck says he describes this current board as unique and values the individual strengths that each trustee brings to the table.

“When you look at their professions that they are in as well as just their willingness to read the board material ahead of time and make informed decisions before they make them. They really are intuned with each other. You can’t say they always agree but that’s not always the case but they get along well enough and they listen to each other and ultimately what makes them the best is that in the end, they make decisions based on what is best for students and I truly feel that they do that,” said Beck.

Marion Board President Ryan Zwicke agrees that the board’s unique makeup has been instrumental in the success of operating the school district.

“I don’t know what it is exactly but we have a pretty good Team of 8 -- seven board members plus the superintendent, Dr. Beck. I think each one

of us brings something to the table -- our backgrounds, our experiences, our expertise -- I think each one of us brings a little bit to the table and that perfect mix just happens,” said Zwicke.

In its announcement to the school district, Dr. Jeff Goldhorn, the executive director of Region 20, also gave appropriate applause to Beck’s own leadership in the Marion ISD.

He states, “The leadership provided by your superintendent has been instrumental in your collective efforts to improve academic achievement and offer new opportunities to the district.

The climate surveys over the past two years provided valuable insights into campus culture. The needs assessment and scorecard from the strategic planning process played a crucial role in focusing on continuous improvement. Your superintendent’s guidance has been a key factor in your success.”

Zwicke says Beck’s contributions as superintendent have been positive and a game changer for the district.

“It’s been tremendous. I can’t compliment him enough. I am really satisfied with the direction that he is putting Marion ISD in right now,” said Zwicke.

Other members of the Marion ISD Board of Trustees include Vice President Dr. Karl Harborth,  Secretary Jill LeSage, and trustees Dr. Kevin “Bubba” Kunde, Jamie Mote, Caleb Rackley, and JC Batey.

The Marion ISD Board of Trustees is now one of 20 Regional School Board of the Year winners and will now go on to compete for the state title.

In his early years, Larry was an active member of the Seguin Volunteer Fire Department, where he served his community with distinction. He also participated in the pumper racing team, forging strong bonds and creating lasting memories with his fellow firefighters.

Sports were a significant part of Larry’s life. He enjoyed spending weekday evenings playing softball for the church league and the city’s over35 league, where his competitive spirit and camaraderie shone brightly. In

retirement, Larry found joy in shooting trap and skeet on Friday evenings and weekends, a hobby that brought him great satisfaction and a host of dear friends.

Larry’s retirement years were devoted to caring for the family ranch in Fentress. He spent his days planting and tending to his garden, ensuring it thrived and provided fresh produce for his family. His tireless efforts in shredding, mowing, and maintaining the property kept the ranch beautiful and welcoming for all who visited.

White House: End Of Roe Has Been Devastating For Women

(Washington, DC) -- The White House is marking the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Monday that the decision has been devastating for women’s health. She said more than 20 states have restricted or banned abortion following the end of Roe, impacting one in three women. President Biden has made reproductive rights a pillar of his reelection campaign and has blamed his political rival Donald Trump for abortion bans around the country. Trump has repeatedly taken credit for ending Roe by appointing three conservative Supreme Court justices.

Fauci Says Trump Admin Staff Fed Him Misinformation

(Washington, DC) -- Former White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci says Donald Trump’s staff pushed misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic. On Friday, Fauci sat down for an interview where he said he and Trump got along “very well” at times, but things became tense with his staff during the lockdowns in 2020. Fauci said his insistence that COVID-19 was serious didn’t seem to upset Trump, but Trump’s staff allegedly grew “furious” with him. He added that as the pandemic went on, the White House team started to “try to discredit everything [he] said.” Fauci recently appeared before Congress, where he grew emotional talking about the death threats and harrassment he and his family continue to endure due to his role in the COVID lockdown.
