Park West Apartments in the works

(Seguin) -- More than 200 apartment homes are coming to an area near Park West in Seguin. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday gave its blessing to the Cedar Bluff Apartments.

Seguin City Manager Steve Parker says this is an apartment complex that will be focused on a more mature clientele, and he says it’s a type of housing that is sorely needed in Seguin.

“This is a 10-acre development just north of Park West. It is on multi-family but there is a request to do a four percent tax credit project there which would be basically a 202 unit apartment complex. It would be restricted to 55 and older and would only be eligible for residents who had 60 percent of AMI (Adjusted Medium Income),” said Parker.

Carly Gast, development director for Kittle Property Group, spoke to the council about their proposed project. Kittle Property Group is a wellknown national firm, that is said to work to provide quality and affordable multi-family apartment homes. Gast says this new complex will have a mix of buildings on-site.

Want to enter a float in the 4th of July Parade?

Parade entry deadline is Friday

(Seguin) -- Time is ticking to lock in your spot in this year’s Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade in Texas.

The parade gets underway at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4 in downtown Seguin.

Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director, says the deadline to enter your float entry is this Friday.

“We currently have over 80 applications already but we are still taking applications and asking that they be turned in by June 21 so that we can get confirmations out the week of June 24,” said Kramm.

Kramm says the city encourages folks to come out and participate. He says the parade continues to be one of the most popular independence day parades around.

“Any individual or organization or business is welcome to participate. Our rule is that the entry be decorated in red, white and blue. So, if you own a small business and you want to show your appreciation to the community by being in the parade, you can definitely do that. If you are a non-profit organization,

you can definitely enter a vehicle or a truck and trailer and decorate it out in red, white and blue to kind of promote what your mission is to the greater community. It’s a large event that is great to spread your message as well as share that you are proud of being an American,” said Kramm.

There is no cost to enter the parade. Again, the deadline is Friday, June 21. Those wishing to enter the parade are asked to visit seguintexas.gov for an application or contact the Seguin Main Street Office at 830-401-2475.

Seguin ISD gets update on districtwide bond projects

(Seguin) -- Fast and furious are how district officials are describing the progress of bond projects currently in the works across the Seguin ISD.

Sharing the district’s most recent update is Bill Lewis, the consultant tasked with overseeing the district’s bond projects.

First on his list was the announcement that the addition of new classrooms at Ball Early Childhood Center is officially complete. He says not only did the project finish earlier than expected but staff have already moved in for the upcoming school year.

“Ball Early Childhood Center, we have a 100 percent completed project over there. It turned out beautiful. It looks just like a great extension of the previous building -- the color schemes, the looks -- of course, the Koehler Company, did the original. They redid that back in 2010,” said Lewis.

Lewis also brought the Seguin

ISD Board of Trustees up to speed on the Ag facility project.

Lewis says on top of finalizing the design, officials are working on enclosures as well as ground security.

He says fencing is not just for the animals but to help keep the site protected.

“The Ag facility. I know a lot of people have been asking why is this not done? Why is this not going up? Well, we are not just building a barn. We are building a huge Ag science facility with lots of moving parts, lots of details that the staff at the high school and the Ag teachers have just been awesome in providing -- all the details and the things they want, the

things they’ve seen, the things they’ve learned and heard -- very specific to the animals that are going to be kept and raised in these facilities. Moving along, we are on target for this. Some things that are coming up is we are going to be doing some water testing on the wells that are out there. We do have electricity on site to turn on that well and start testing the water because when we pull in a lot of water from the bibs from the well, we are not paying for the water from the water provider out there,” said Lewis.

Also in the works is the planning for the transportation department. Lewis says design documents are complete.

He says now they await the bid process for sometime in August.

Roofing and other repairs are also in the works for the Central Administration Building housed in the former Oak Park Mall facility.

Progress can also be seen over at the new baseball and softball complex at Seguin High School. Bond, pg. 3

Apartments, continued.

“We will have three, three-story buildings and then we will have I think there’s eight cottage buildings so they are one story buildings with 40 units in each. It looks like a duplex basically so it will have a combination of both,” said Gast.

Gast says there will be a number of amenities also on-site, including common spaces that will enhance the quality of living for people who reside there.

“There’s community

space throughout all three of the three story buildings so on the first floor when you walk in, one building will have a fitness center, one will have a library, one will have a leasing office, business center -- we will have an arts and crafts activity room,” said Gast.

There will be an elevator for three-story buildings, and Gast says there will be other features there as well.

The property is located at 920 San Antonio Avenue directly across the street from Park West.

Bond, continued.

The turf has officially been installed and the large steel beams appear to already be in place for the batting cage.

Work also continues with the

concession stand and restroom area.

The Seguin ISD also just recently broke ground for the construction and renovation of Barnes Middle School.

The district plans to expand the cafeteria, library and fine arts area while also adding additional classrooms.

A redesign of the drop-off and pick-up line is also part of the overall renovation at Barnes.

Finalizing a date for a summer groundbreaking for the new McQueeney Elementary campus is also said to be in the works.

Born into a military family, Riley spent his early years in Kansas and France, but grew up primarily in the San Antonio area. He graduated from Churchill High School and would later serve multiple combat tours in Vietnam. Riley earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University in 1978, before returning to active military duty. Certain Medications Elevate Heat Risk

(Undated) -- WIth a heat wave gripping much of the nation this week, experts are warning people who take certain medications to be careful. Those include medicines for high blood pressure, allergies and mental health. Diuretics, which help the body produce more urine, can lead to dehydration in extreme heat. Beta blockers can impede the body’s ability to regulate temperature, while certain antipsychotics can affect the ability to produce sweat.

Tips For Minimizing Risk Of Heat Exhaustion Or Heat Stroke

(Undated) -- Heat waves can trigger heat exhaustion, life-threatening heat strokes or heart attacks. We all know we’re supposed to apply sunscreen, wear light colored clothing, avoid the sun during peak hours and stay hydrated. Health experts say that means drinking eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes if you’re outside or without air conditioning. You want to avoid heat-related illnesses like heat stroke which is the number one cause of death during a heat event. Replenishing electrolytes is important and you can do that with sports drinks, fruits and leafy greens. If you feel dizzy, faint or your body temperature hits 103 degrees, doctors consider that an emergency and that means calling 9-1-1.

Texas Supreme Court Rules Frozen Embryos Are Not Human Beings

(Denton, TX) -- The Texas Supreme Court is refusing to take up a controversial case involving in vitro fertilization. A divorcing couple in the Dallas suburb of Denton have been fighting over frozen embryos, which were part of their prenup. The woman claimed they should be classified as human beings, meaning they would fall under child custody, not private property. The state’s high court disagreed. The justices allowed a lower court decision to stand, meaning the husband keeps the frozen embryos.

Advocates Push For Pediatric Brain Cancer Research At CWS
