(Seguin) -- Even though classrooms might be closed for the summer, most school cafeterias in the Seguin ISD remain open.
Several campuses, including the concession stand in Park West continue to serve up both breakfast and lunch meals to local children.
The meals are all part of the Seguin ISD’s annual Free Summer Food Program.
Jacob Galvan, the Seguin ISD director of Child
Nutrition, says the program is designed to ensure meals for all children under the age of 18.
He says the program is for all families with children in the area.
“The USDA and TDA, that’s the Texas Department of Agriculture, school districts that provide meals throughout the school year, there are some that are able to continue that during the summer months andFood, pg. 3
(Seguin) -- A pre-teen baking champion, with ties to Seguin, was recently recognized by the Seguin City Council.
Lila Smethurst recently won Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship. Smethurst lives in San Antonio, but her ties to Seguin run deep. That’s according to Seguin City Councilman Bill Keller, who led the charge to honor Smethurst.
“I know a lot of people had been watching Lila during the competition and following it and we are just as proud of her as if she were a part of Seguin, a member of our Seguin family and in my mind, she is a member of the Seguin family because the Hollaman Family goes back a long long way and the Smethurst Family, they’ve been our friends and been a part of Seguin and we wanted to recognize Lila and her accomplishments,” said Keller.
Mayor Donna Dodgen read a proclamation recognizing Smethurst for her incredible accomplishments at a very young age.
‘Whereas Lila Smethurst, a 12-year-old baking extraordinaire from San Antonio with deep family roots in Seguin proudly represented Texas on the Food’s Network Kids Baking Challenge Championship, a baking competition TV show and whereas, after winning four of the seasons 10 challenges, Lila took home the top prize in the final challenge with a science fair inspired polar theme volcano cake, clinching the Kids Baking Championship Season 12 crown along with $25,000 and a feature in Food Network’s magazine and whereas, Lila is not only a national baking champion but also a young entrepreneur who took her hobby to the next level by starting Lila’s Butterbomb Bakery, a custom online cake ordering business at age 9 and whereas inspired by her mom’s cancer journey, Lila is raising money
for cancer research through her baking and charitable initiative with proceeds given to the foundation for cancer research,” said Smethhurst.
Lila thanked the Seguin City Council for the honor she received during last week’s meeting at Seguin City Hall.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would do something worthy of this kind of recognition. I am so grateful that the Lord had this plan for my life, and I know that everything I need to succeed, he already has instilled in me. There is no doubt that being cast on Kids Baking Championship was a dream come true. But it wasn’t always a cakewalk, no pun intended, “laughs Smethurst. “While it was exciting, there were also moments of stress and anxiety as I went through the 10 episodes. During hard times, it was a great comfort to know that I was not alone. I know I am lucky to have a strong faith and I know the Holy Spirit was with me for the good times and the hard times.”’
Lila says the Kids Baking Championship was an amazing experience, and she earned more than just the prize money. She says
she made some really close friends during the show. She says she’s also thankful for all of the love and support that she has been shown from people here in Seguin.
“During the airing of Kids Baking Championship, I know that so many people in Seguin were cheering me on and the way that you have showed me love and support has been incredible. Kids Baking Championship has been my favorite show since I was four years old and then to compete and win was very surreal. Along with my baking skills being better after being on the show, I also walked away with lifelong friendships. The other baking contestants and their families on Season 12 of KBC were exceptional. They were all kind, talented, funny and hardworking and we bonded like a little family. It’s been an unexpected takeaway that I did not count on being so close with all the kids and their families,” said Smethurst.
If you missed this latest season of the Kids Baking Championship on the Food Network, it is available for streaming on a number of platforms, including YouTubeTV, Hulu and Max.
(Seguin) -- A Victoria man found himself behind bars following a traffic stop in Seguin. Guadalupe County Narcotics Agents say Daniel Romanowski, 41, was arrested at 10:30 p.m. Friday after officers seized over $47,000 worth of drugs from inside his 2023 Toyota 4runner. Romanowski was reportedly traveling on IH-10 with 500 pounds of Methamphetamine.
Agents say during the traffic stop a K9 Deputy deployed his narcotics detecting K9 partner “Bruno” to conduct an open sniff of the vehicle.

we are using the Summer Food Service Program to do that and so the intention of that is to ensure that the children in the community have access to the same nutritional meals that they are used to during the school year throughout the summer. It really helps to bridge the gap for those families that rely on school meals during the academic year and so we are able to continue bringing free breakfast and lunch throughout the summer months and we definitely encourage folks that haven’t participated before during the summer. One of our more popular sites and easy to access rotations is in Park West and we provide lunch there Monday through Thursday,” said Galvan.
He says the program not only is there to help those in need but serves as a convenience for those parents who are balancing summer and work or who simply want an easy way to grab a meal in between those busy summer activities with their kids.
“There is definitely an efficiency
They say “Bruno” alerted to the odor of narcotics which led to a probable cause of the vehicle. During the search, they say a duffle bag was located, which contained the approximately 10.45 Kilograms of methamphetamine.
DEA San Antonio and San Antonio Police Department detectives assisted in the investigation. Romanoski was taken into federal custody for possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of Methamphetamine
that we have that if you come to one of our sites and you are in a rush, you will come straight to the line. You are not going to have to wait. Everything is going to be ready within seconds and that’s to the effect that we are still putting out quality foods because that is the way our program usually runs is by that efficiency and convenience and so that’s the reason too where I know sometimes going into the high
school parking lot, you’ve got to walk and all that but if you are able to come out to a site like Park West, you park and walk maybe a hundred or so feet and you can grab a nice hot lunch right then and there with little effort required,” said Galvan.
Galvan says his team this year has also added Grab and Go Bundles over at McQueeney Elementary School.

Food, continued.
He says this is a great option for families who don’t have the time to stop by a local campus for a sit-down meal.
“A new endeavor that we have this year that the USDA is allowing districts to implement if they meet the qualifications is they are bringing back what we call the non-congregate meal service which is more famously known as curbside meals which is something that we did during the pandemic months and so we are able to bring that back again this year and we are doing that at McQueeney Elementary and we are providing multi day meal bundles for parents to bring their kids with them and drive up curbside through the McQueeney Elementary School bus loop and then on Monday, you can get a three day bundle for breakfast and lunch for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and then on Thursdays from 11 to
1 p.m., you can come by and pick up a four day bundle for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. So, we are hoping that with these different types of sites, you can come by to locations such as Park West and get a nice hot lunch or if it is more convenient for families to grab a bundle of meals at one time, then we are able to provide that at McQueeney Elementary this year,” said Galvan.
Breakfast and lunch menus plus times and dates vary at each location so families are encouraged to check out the available schedule found on the Seguin ISD website or Seguin ISD Facebook page. Galvan says, more importantly, there’s no sign-in or paperwork required.
“So at all of our summer locations, which we have the full list on our Seguin ISD menu web page under our Child Nutrition Department, for all of our locations during the summer months, any child from Seguin or another state or another country, anybody 18 and under can
get a free meal and then any adult they can get a breakfast for $2.75 or they can get a lunch for $4.75 and so, I know with inflation and with prices going up everywhere, I think that you will find that our meals are a great value, a great quality and you can feed the whole family - you can feed two kids for free and mom and dad for less than $10 bucks at one of our locations and I think that this can be a real benefit for families that are able to come out to our site and take advantage of that,” said Galvan.
Participating schools and locations include Rodriguez Elementary, Seguin High School, the Irma Lewis Outdoor Learning Center, Vogel Elementary School, Ball Early Childhood Center, Starcke Park East, Park West, and McQueeney Elementary School.
The summer food program runs through Aug. 1. The program will shut down one week to allow its employees a summer vacation from July 1-5.

Riley Jean McDavitt, age 73 of McQueeney, passed away on June 2, 2024. Riley was born on December 14, 1950 in Ft. Riley, Kansas to Kathryn (Jordan) and Jerome A. McDavitt.
Born into a military family, Riley spent his early years in Kansas and France, but grew up primarily in the San Antonio area. He graduated from Churchill High School and would later serve multiple combat tours in Vietnam. Riley earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University in 1978, before returning to active military duty. Riley was a public school science teacher for over 30 years and also served as Cheer Coach for Southside ISD, River City Mustangs, and Camp Manager for the National Cheerleading Association. More than anything, he absolutely loved teaching others how to waterski at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge as well as Riley’s H2O Ski School. Beyond lessons, Riley taught countless friends, family and complete strangers to ski just for the fun of it. He retired from Seguin ISD in 2018, but continued teaching others to ski as long as the lake would allow.
Riley was passionate about waterskiing, barefooting, and most of all Lake McQueeney. He enjoyed spending time on the lake with his loved ones, skiing with the Ski Bees, gardening, mowing the lawn and watching
Aggie sports. Riley had a tenacious spirit, taking on all obstacles with positivity, a laid-back attitude and a special kind of patience. He was an intensely loyal friend and an incredibly dedicated father.

(Chicago, IL) -- A new study suggests swapping out sitting for light activity can help you live longer. A recent study by the AMA found that replacing one hour a day watching TV with light physical activity increased the odds of healthy aging by 28 percent. Researchers say prolonged sitting may interfere with blood-flow to the brain. They also found that people who average seven hours of sleep or less per night could improve their odds of healthy aging if they replaced some TV time with more sleep. The same did not hold true for replacing physical activity for sleep. In other words, it’s ok to replace TV time for sleep but don’t sleep less in order to exercise more.
(Washington, DC) -- Children at residential treatment centers are reportedly at risk for sexual abuse, dangerous physical restraints and overmedication. A Senate committee reported that weak oversight and a system that “optimizes profit over the wellbeing and safety of children” put kids at risk. The panel investigated some of the largest behavioral health companies in the nation, like Universal Health Services, Acadia Healthcare and Vivant Behavioral Healthcare. It reported “rampant civil rights violations.”
(Stony Brook, NY) -- A new study suggests 9/11 first responders may face a heightened risk of developing dementia before the age of 65. Researchers at New York’s Stony Brook University say their conclusion took into account prior work that determined dust and debris from the World Trade Center collapse contained dangerous neurotoxins. They say that “long-term exposure to inhaled air pollutants, including particulate matter, has been identified as a potential risk factor for the earlier onset of dementia.” The full study is out this week in the journal JAMA Network Open.
(Washington, DC) -- Following a planet-friendly diet could possibly reduce the risk of premature death by nearly a third. A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating a planet-healthy diet cut land use by 51-percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 29-percent-on top of extending people’s lives. That diet consists of mostly fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
