No financial assistance in store for storm victims

Guadalupe County residents to pick

(Redwood) -- At least one family continues to seek the aid of an American Red Cross shelter that was set up earlier this week in northern Guadalupe County. The shelterin-place was put into operation following Thursday’s storm damage.

Carmen Davila, the public information officer for Guadalupe County, says the shelter is operating out of St. Joseph Mission Church in Redwood. The church is a sister congregation of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church here in Seguin.

Davila says the shelter has been providing 24-hour assistance -servicing the family with cots, food and water. She says the American Red Cross has also been actively working to find a more permanent solution for the area family.

Meanwhile, finding help for not only this family but all others in the county who sustained damage to homes, businesses or agricultural lands will be even more important That’s according to Davila who says unfortunately, Guadalupe County will not be receiving any FEMA assistance.

“Unfortunately, right now, what we are looking at -- is that we are not meeting the level to get financial assistance but it is still important for people to report those numbers so that as we have other disasters throughout the year, those collectively add up. (That) is how emergency management was explaining it so if there are fires in the summer or more storms, those all add up to try to meet those disaster numbers,” said Davila.

Canadian film festival to feature project from Seguin

(Seguin) --  A short film captured on the other side of a lens here in Seguin will be showcased in Canada this weekend.

Local filmmaker Don Cunningham is excited that his short gothic horror film, “The Castle of Baron Finch,” has been selected for its world premiere at the Bay of Blood Film Festival.

The Canadian festival hails itself as selecting only the best of the best and filters through hundreds and hundreds of submitted entries from around the world.  This Saturday’s festival will showcase a screening of six features and 53 short films from 14 different countries.

Cunningham has been working on this project for the last six years and is thrilled that his film is one of the 53 to be featured.

“I’m honored. Actually, I’m ecstatic over the moon because what I made was something more of a classical cinema piece as opposed to the modern day jump, scare and horror and gore type of thing. It is more of a classic piece of cinema so I’m very excited that someone saw that in it,” said Cunningham.

Although, he will not be traveling to Canada for its premiere, Cunningham says he can’t wait to hear what moviegoers have to say about the short film, which he describes as “kind of a homage” to the classic monster movies of the 20s and 30s.

“I shot it silent on actual film. So, over the course of 22 minutes, you get to travel through Central Europe quote unquote on the trail of a vampire. It just has that atmosphere that the old movies had that you really don’t see nowadays. It was scored by a Norwegian composer Andreu Jacob and it’s really just a piece that I wanted to have as the timeless quality of a movie. There is nothing there that should really be considered inappropriate for a young audience. It might be a little terrifying for a younger viewer or what not but it’s just that magical piece of cinema, “said Cunningham.

Among the things he’s most proud of in directing the film is the ability to travel to Europe without going

to Europe. That’s because he was able to find locations for the film here in Seguin and surrounding areas. He says the effects in the short were accomplished the same way they were a century ago. He adds that while the project might have taken longer to complete without going digital, it was accomplished the way he wanted.

“That’s one of the things that I noticed about movies is someone might try something on a small budget but it just looks off. I think I was able to accomplish with a lot of our locale here -- wooded areas or certain pieces of architecture that we have here in Seguin and Central Texas out of the 1800s and it looks very close to lapidated castle or a woodman’s hut -- something like that so I was very happy to include my hometown within the footage -- and from what I’ve heard that people would not have taken a second guess to think it was Central Europe,” said Cunningham. Cunningham is also honored that the film will represent not only his work but also the city’s support of its fine arts community. He says he was able to finish the project thanks to a grant received by the Seguin Commission on the Arts.

Other independent films to be featured at the festival can be found at bayofblood.ca.

Guadalupe County salutes economic development efforts

(Seguin) -- Recruiting businesses is not a lone job. It apparently takes a team effort to help make things happen and help make a community grow.

Those are the thoughts of Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). Schneuker recently thanked the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court for its role in economic development.

Schneuker along with representatives from other EDCs throughout the county were invited earlier this month to go before the commissioners during a special proclamation signing of Economic Development Week in Guadalupe County.

The county expressed

its willingness to partner with the EDC's in its efforts to create and retain jobs that help facilitate growth, support the workforce development and enhance the overall wealth and tax base of the area.

Schneuker says that unity to grow the local economy is why the Seguin EDC appreciates the role of the county in all of its attempts to help leverage incentive tools so that a deal can be reached.

"We really just want to thank you all for

underway in officer involved shooting in Comal County

(Comal County) --The Texas Rangers are investigating a shooting over the weekend that involved a Comal County deputy. Deputies responded around noon on Sunday to a call about a suicidal person at a home on Elm Creek Road near New Braunfels.

During a conversation with the deputies, the person pulled a handgun, and was shot by one of the deputies.

The wounded person is in the ICU of a local hospital.

The deputy is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

recognizing this week as Economic Development Week for your partnership on a lot of these deals and projects that we work on. A lot of times, there are requirements that have the county and other entities and stakeholders step in to help get these deals over the finish line so we just want to thank you all for that," said Schneuker.

Schneuker says together, he is hopeful that not only will companies come to the county but that they will stay here for

Storm, continued.

Davila reports that of the required $794,000 threshold, only about $100,000 in storm damage has been reported. Those still needing to report their damage are asked to visit the iSTAT website at https://damage. tdem.texas.gov/.

Since there will be no assistance, Davila say any cleanup or restoration efforts will be left up to the residents.

“Right now, we are trying to get out the information that property owners are responsible for their own cleanup so we are pushing out safety measures for them to think about safety when they are picking up debris, trash, cutting limbs or trees. They can call their nearby landfill to see what the cost is and to see if the items that they are willing to take are accepted at that facility. Those are private companies so before hauling things over to the landfill, make sure they are going to accept those,” said Davila.

many years to come.

"We are committed to continuing to work on helping create and retain more primary jobs here within our community -- focusing and also enhancing the quality of life, diversifying the retail options that we have and most importantly, making sure that we as the city of Seguin, Schertz, Cibolo, New Braunfels, we work in partnership with you all to make sure that we remain economically competitive so now there's been a big focus on the workforce development efforts as well. So, all that kind of bleeds into economic development and again, we couldn't do it without your support here today," said Schneuker.

Behal

Rhonda Hill Behal, 61, of Seguin, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2024. She was surrounded by family and friends and now joins her parents Amelia, John, and Estelle in their eternal home.

Rhonda is survived by her husband Charlie, her children Charles, Cara, and Jessie, and her siblings Karen, Robby, and Randy. She is also survived by an incredible host of friends and a gaggle of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Rhonda was a graduate of Seguin High School in 1980 where she was a member of the varsity choir and the Gold Battalion Dance Team lieutenant. After high school, she attended the University of Texas in Austin where she studied Art and Business. Shortly after school, she came back home to Seguin where she married Charlie in 1997. They lived there for the remainder of their 27-year marriage.

Those who knew Rhonda will remember her for a great many things, most of all for her never-ending acts of service centered around food, family,

and faith. She loved being in the kitchen preparing all of her favorite recipes for family and friends as well as those in need of comfort or joy. She was at her happiest when planning and coordinating trips, get-togethers, and community activities.

With what little free time she found, she volunteered her services to the charities she held dear, including the Christian Cupboard, the ELCA’s “God’s Work, Our Hands,” and The American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life.” The few moments she took for herself were spent at home either on her and Charlie’s back porch or looking out the kitchen window where she loved watching the hummingbirds and looking at the wildflowers.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 19th, 2024 in the Worship Center of Spirit of Joy Church in Seguin at 3 pm with a reception to follow. If you can attend, please know that all are welcome. If you are unable to, please do as Rhonda would and enjoy the birds and the flowers with the next opportunity you get. You’ll find her there.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guadalupe County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1593, Seguin, Texas, 78155-1593, or to the Christian Cupboard, 516 N. Camp St., Seguin, Texas, 78155.

Windecker

Anita Frieda Windecker, Professor Emerita of Music at Texas Lutheran University and founder of the Mid-Texas Symphony passed away on May 11, 2024 at age 95.

Anita Windecker was born in Karnes City, Texas on December 6, 1928 into a home filled every day with classical music. Her father Konrad, a Lutheran minister, had played violin for the St. Paul Symphony while he was at the Seminary there. At his first church assignment, he met, fell in love with and married the pianist and organist, Frieda Loos. Able to speak multiple languages, he was called to serve Russian speaking congregations in Saskatchewan, where he began teaching his 3 sons to play musical instruments. In 1928, he was called to deliver the gospel in German to Karnes City TX and three other communities. Anita was born soon after they arrived.

Baby Anita was wrapped in music, the Christian faith and love. At age 5 she was invited to try the piano after her brother had finished his lesson. The piano teacher told Frieda that her daughter was a music prodigy and the teacher offered to teach Anita for free. By age 8, Anita was playing at her father’s churches with her mother and playing public concerts. She learned to play the organ and the harp. Anita, on harp, and Konrad, on violin were invited to play for the District Convention of the American Lutheran Church and a local radio station. She played concerts regularly in junior high and high school.

Anita Windecker attended Texas Lutheran College for two years and then earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music at the University of Texas. In 1950, she joined the music faculty of TLU teaching piano. In 1953, she took a sabbatical from TLU to study in New York. Her New York piano coach soon admitted that her skill on the piano was far beyond his ability to coach her and recommended she find a more advanced coach. Future piano star Byron Janis lived in the same building as she, so she knocked at his door. Janis told Anita that he did not coach and he was preparing for his first European tour. After Anita played for him, he agreed to coach her. For the time he was on his European tour, he left her a list of pieces to learn and practice, and asked Adele Marcus, his highly regarded coach at the Juilliard School in New York City, to take up Anita’s coaching. Upon returning from the tour, Janis coached Anita for her piano debut at Carnegie Hall on August 9, 1953. A standing ovation and cries for “encore” told the story of her performance that night.

Although her New York coaches wanted her to begin giving concert

tours, Anita wanted to do more. Her position at TLU was perfect for her passions of music, playing the piano and teaching. She could also do concert tours in Texas. The decision was an easy one.

Professor Windecker knew that a top tier auditorium would not only help the TLU music school, but all of TLU and the whole community as well. At faculty meetings every year she would propose it as a goal for TLU. Finally, after years of dogged determinism and absolute faith in the outcome, the faculty began chanting “au di tor ium” as she walked into the room. The faculty had given their approval. Measurements taken in the 1,050 seat Jackson Auditorium showed perfect acoustics.

With comparable determinism and faith, in 1977 Professor Windecker started promoting a professional classical symphony. She was aware that neither Seguin nor New Braunfels could support such a thing, but together … In 1978 the Mid-Texas Symphony was born. Today, 46 years later, it continues to grow, delivering exceptional concerts to both cities and surrounding communities.

Anita retired from Texas Lutheran University in 2000, after 50 years on the faculty and many years as head of the Music School. Her gifts of music have been well received. Like the 1928 Windecker living room in Karnes City, music runs through it. When asked how, she would point up and say, “to God the glory.”

Anita was preceded in death by her parents, Konrad and Frieda Windecker, and her three brothers, Leo James Windecker, Rev. Arnold Konrad Windecker and Roland Theodore Windecker.

Anita never married. Survivors include nephews and nieces Robert Windecker and wife Judy, Theodore Windecker and wife Charlotte, Gwendolyn Shannon and husband Mickey, Rev. Ronald Windecker and wife Deborah, Paula Milner and husband Brad, Roland Windecker Jr., and 9 great nieces and nephews and other loving family members and friends.

A memorial service celebrating Anita’s life will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of The Abiding Presence on the campus of Texas Lutheran University with the Reverend Marcus Bigott officiating. A reception will follow in the Timmerman Room at Hein Dining Hall at Texas Lutheran University.

Private interment will be held prior, at Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-Texas Symphony, 1000 W. Court St., #3216, Seguin, Texas, 78155, Texas Lutheran University, Development Office, 1000 West Court Street, Seguin, Texas, 78155 or Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis, Seguin, Texas, 78155.

Report: Pfizer Settles Zantac Lawsuits

(New York, NY) -- Pfizer has reportedly agreed to settle over ten-thousand Zantac lawsuits. Bloomberg News reported Wednesday that Pfizer is settling multiple lawsuits over a cancer risk connected to the heartburn drug. The FDA pulled Zantac off the shelves in 2020 after a cancercausing substance was found in the drug. Thousands of lawsuits against Pfizer were soon filed in state and federal courts. The settlements cover cases in U.S. state courts but don’t completely resolve the drugmaker’s exposure to Zantac claims. Financial details were not disclosed.

FDA Issues Insulin Pump App Recall

(Washington, DC) -- The FDA says a software issue has led to a recall on more than 85-thousand devices for an insulin pump app. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the Version two-point-seven of the t-connect mobile app that connects with an insulin pump has caused more than 200 injuries. The FDA says the software glitch can result in an insulin pump shutting down sooner than it’s supposed to. The app is under a “Class One” recall, which the FDA says in its announcement is “the most serious type of recall” and the “devices may cause serious injuries or death.”

More Hospitals And Surgery Centers Are Demanding Patients Pay In Advance

(New York, NY) -- Hospitals are increasingly seeking advance payment for procedures like CT scans, knee replacements and even births. Advance billing helps hospitals avoid hounding patients to settle up payment. Federal law requires hospitals to take care of people in an emergency, and they can’t legally turn away patients who need medical care urgently for lack of prepayment. Congress and regulators have ordered hospitals to be more transparent on prices to avoid surprise billing. The hospitals say, knowing the cost ahead of service gives patients the opportunity to comparison-shop. Yet, half of all adults in the US say they can’t afford to spend more than 500-dollars on medical care should they be suddenly sick or injured.

GOP Anti-Abortion Bill Angers Physicians

(New Orleans, LA) -- Hundreds of Louisiana doctors have signed a letter, urging state lawmakers not to classify the abortion pill as a controlled substance. That would lock up those who help women end their pregnancies. The head of the New Orleans Health Department writes that the move could also delay life-saving treatment. The letter states that mifepristone [[mif-uh-PRISS-tone]] is safe and should not be in the same category as addictive drugs. That, the doctors claim, will result in “fear and confusion.” The author filed the bill after his pregnant sister’s husband slipped abortion pills in her drink without her consent.
