Navarro ISD voters say yes to $120 million bond election

New stadium, athletic facilities plus elementary school on its way

(Geronimo) -- Voters in the Navarro ISD have said “yes” to the largest bond election in the district’s history. Voters during the Saturday, May 4 Election agreed to Propositions A, B and C totaling $120 million.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says the voter support throughout this election has been tremendous. She says she each winning proposition led with great margin.

“I am extremely thrilled and grateful that our taxpayers came out and participated in the voting -- to have them share their thoughts of support after such a great group of folks came out -- students, parents, community members, teachers and staff. To come up with a plan to address our growing community and to see their recommendations be accepted by our incredibly supportive board who then called this bond and to know that our community is

standing together in that support of that plan is just tremendous and it’s a positive step forward for a community that is growing our students, growing our district and growing as a thriving community here in Geronimo and Seguin,” said Epley.

Included in Proposition A was $73.7 million for a new elementary campus along with a refresh of the existing elementary and intermediate schools plus drives and parking and a chiller replacement at the existing high school.

A total of 598 (70 percent) votes were cast in favor of Proposition A while 261 (30 percent) votes were cast against it.

Epley says the results illustrate the public’s understanding of the district’s growing pains. She says the approval of Prop A was vital to creating more elbow room in the classroom and says the district is expected to hit capacity with its current elementary and intermediate schools during the Fall 2026 and Fall 2027 school years.

“It is a huge demonstration of faith that our community members and taxpayers have in us to really grow our facilities, to support those students and families that are coming and to know that we will have those resources to be able to expand our facilities, to start moving fromBond, pg. 3

Springs Hill approves a SUD

Voters agree to special utility district designation

(Seguin) -- Springs Hill members have overwhelingly agreed to converting the water corporation into a Special Utility District. (SUD)

That decision was made Saturday during the May 4 Election.

A total of 480 votes (67 percent) were cast in favor of the measure while 235 (33 percent) votes were cast against it.

Applauding the decision to not only accept the challenge but to also come out and vote is Springs Hill General Manager Mike Andrews.

“They are seeing that with all the growth we have in the county -- that we needed to do things to keep that growth going at a pace that wasn’t out of control but not rained in and the SUD gives the organization and our board the best opportunity to try to keep that growth down the middle, not too fast -- and I’m glad that most of the votes were early. People thought about it and expressed it early and I was very very happy to see that and everybody that I talked to as I was going around town -- I had spoken at Rotary and at Lions Club and at other organizations and the support among Springs Hill members was very nice,” said Andrews.

Andrews says there at least two important changes that voters will initially see.

He says the first allows the SUD to immediately take resources to its existing members. He says people, who voted in this election, will get to have their water lines upgraded to 2024 standards.

“It’s going to allow the organization to go into some of the older Springs Hill neighborhoods where there were water lines that were laid say in 1965, 1967, 1970. And, we can do the math. Some of those are getting close to 60 years old. We are going to have the resources now to go back in and lay new water lines just like it was a new subdivision out on Highway 46 or going up 123 and they will be able to get new water lines in some of those places. And, from a

maintenance perspective, we are not going to have to go out there and fix leaks as often,” said Andrews.

Second, Andrews says by operating as a SUD, it gives them the resources to buy the water that is necessary for future growth and development.

“The reason why I can start buying water that I couldn’t buy before is because there are many government entities that sell water -- Canyon Regional Water Authority, Schertz-Seguin Local Government Companies are two examples and they are very generous and have worked really well with us all the years but they are required to really work with governmental agencies first and then whatever, they have leftover, they can go to private. Well, we have been a private, not for profit all along and as soon as we officially switch over to becoming a special utility district, then we are getting to sit --for a lack of a better word -- at the big kids table. So, we can buy water just as easily as the city of Marion or the city of Seguin or Santa Clara or any of the other special utility districts -- Green Valley or Crystal Clear -- so we are on equal footing. There are almost 11,000 proposed houses waiting within the Springs Hill coverage area that are waiting for us to say ‘Yes, we have water. Subdivisions A,B and C, you can start building,” said Andrews.

During the voting process, this specific election, due to the water code and election code, asked that voters sign an affidavit of eligibility just before casting their ballot. At the end of voting, Andrews say there were only three provisional ballots cast -- meaning that only three people decided to not sign the affidavit per the Secretary of State’s Office.

Public groundbreaking set for Rudeloff Road Expansion

(Seguin) - City of Seguin officials are encouraging residents to follow along in their journey as they oversee the Rudeloff Road Expansion Project from start to finish.

The first step in that journey will be at 9:30 a.m. today for the public groundbreaking ceremony to be held today at the Fields at Huber Ranch.

Phase I of the thoroughfare improvements, stretches 1.5 miles from State Highway 46 to

Huber Road just east of the softball fields.

City officials say the first phase of the roadway project includes transforming the current two-lane road to four to five lanes, with concrete hike and bike trails on each side of the street. Drainage improvements are also part of the project.

The project is being funded by a grant from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization

(AAMPO) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for roadway construction projects in the community.

Residents who live next door and daily commuters are especially encouraged to attend to learn more about the upcoming project. The city hopes to have the roadway expanded in Summer 2026. Huber Fields is located at 3000 Huber Road.

Building Bridges:

TLU mural unveiled

Passerby’s or visitors to Texas Lutheran University are invited to get a look at the mural on the south wall of the Schuech Fine Arts Center located just off of Prexy Drive. The mural created by local artist/muralist Danielle Villareal serves as a visual metaphor depicting the cultural bridge between TLU and the city of Seguin.

portables to actually existing structures that can continue to support the community as it grows. (It) is just really exciting and we are thrilled to have that trust and faith and we plan on being transparent and continuing to communicate about the progress about these projects,” said Epley.

Navarro High School will also welcome a brand new athletic stadium thanks to the approval of Proposition B in the amount of $35.5 million. The package calls for a 7,000 seat football stadium with track and field facilities plus concessions, restrooms and field house.

A total of 512 (60 percent) votes were cast in favor of Prop B while 346 (40 percent) votes were cast against it.

Epley says the new stadium was crucial in finalizing the outfit for the new high school campus being built across the street. She says current plans did not include any on-site stadium.

“The community could see the distance between our new high school and our current athletic facilities. I think the community also knows as we grow how important it is to invest in projects that connect kids, that get kids to be a part of activities. I think certainly sharing our athletic plan that building a new athletic complex would allow us to expand our junior high athletic program was a benefit for all students. So, I’m just excited to see that we will be able to add the stadium to accommodate the growth and to

support those athletic programs like our newest program that we will start next year soccer and football and track,” said Epley.

Additional athletic facilities will also be included in the plans at the new high school thanks to voter support over the weekend,.

Proposition C totaling $10.8 million includes new baseball and softball turf fields along with tennis courts, restrooms and concessions.

A total of 518 (60 percent) votes were cast in favor of Prop C while 340 votes (40 percent) were against it.

Epley adds that all existing athletic facilities will remain in use. Plus, she says the upgrades will help in the continued success of all programs.

“Two days ago, we had a baseball game on a very wet and muddy field and today, we played a third game at a host site that was turf and I just think that having that opportunity for our kids is tremendous and I’m just so grateful that our community and taxpayers were able to see that and support that for our kids,” said Epley.

Now that they have locked in voter support, Epley says the district expects to hit the ground running. She says it is their plan to see the athletic facilities finalized around the time that they do open the new high school. She says the district will also be busy connecting with architects and engineers for the construction of the new elementary school campus.

Panthers take down Billies in Bi-District and move on to Needville in Area round

(Wimberley) -- In a win or go home game, it was the Navarro Panthers who kept their season going with a 4-3 win over the Fredericksburg Billies in a decisive game three of the UIL Class 4A Bi-District round on Saturday in Wimberley.

The Panthers rebounded from a 10-0 game two home loss on Friday to win the series and move on to the Area round. Navarro’s defense and a masterful complete game performance by sophomore Austin Davidson on the mound propelled the Panthers on Saturday afternoon to the next round.

The Billies were able to touch up Davidson for single runs in the first two innings but the Panthers would answer in the third. Back-toback-to-back singles by Matthew Villanueva, Colt Brown and Caleb Wood accounted for three runs in the inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead for Navarro. Davidson, Landun Taylor, Villanueva and Brown all came across home plate to give the Panthers the two-run lead.

The Billies would respond in the fifth with a run, but Navarro would keep the lead thanks to a stellar double play to end the inning. Fredericksburg’s Reed Spies lifted a fly ball to left field with one out and and a runner on third. Navarro’s Gavin Newborg would make the catch and then fire the ball to the infield. Davidson cut the ball off and then threw a strike to his catcher Brown who tagged out the runner attempting to score from third to end the inning and preserve Navarro’s 4-3 lead.

Davidson would get the final six outs in the last two innings. Wood caught a pop fly at second for the final out with a runner at second in the seventh and the Panthers celebrated their Bi-District championship on the infield.

Navarro will play Needville in the Area round this week. The Blue Jays took out Iowa Colony, 2-0 in their Bi-District series.

Game one between Navarro and Needville will take place Thursday in Hallettsville. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Game two is scheduled for Friday evening at 7 p.m. in La Grange. And a game three, if necessary, will take place Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. back in Hallettsville. We will have all the games on KWED.

(Weimar) -- In the Class 3A Bi-District round, the Marion Bulldogs fell in their series in three games to Tidehaven in Weimar.

Marion forced a game three with a 10-5 win over the Tigers in game two on Friday afternoon, but the Tigers would win game three 11-5 on Friday night to take the series two games to one.

Evan Gibbons had four hits on Friday and five in the series for the Bulldogs. He also caught every inning of the series behind the plate for Marion.

The Bulldogs finished the season as the District 26-3A champions. They extended their district winning streak to 45 games in 2024. Marion has not lost a district game since

Flach VITAL STATISTICS

“It is always very difficult to give up someone you love, even when it is time.”

Ida Louise Flach was born June 3, 1926, to Richard and Stella Kott in Comfort, Texas, and passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 97. She graduated from Comfort High School and Southwest Texas State Teachers College.

On November 27, 1946, she was married to Alfred E. Flach, Jr. The marriage lasted 61 years. Four sons were born to them. While raising her family she taught school for 31 years and was a member of First Methodist Church for more than 60 years.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her only brother, and her two sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: John and Nancy, Marc and Lexi, Tim and Cecelia, and Todd and Lena. As well as her seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Ida was born on the family farm before electricity or indoor plumbing and grew up during the Great Depression. She was educated in the one room country “Holiday School” that featured boys and girls outhouses and a horse pen. She eventually continued her education “in town,” sometimes staying overnight at her grandparents’ home. She graduated high school in 1942 during WWII and lived through the shortages of the Depression and the

rationing of sugar, gasoline, meat, rubber, and butter during the war.

When Al came home from the South Pacific Theater of War they were married and set up house in the attic of her grandparents’ home. John was born in Kerrville when they lived in Comfort, Marc was born while she and Al attended college in San Marcos, and Tim and Todd were born in Seguin.

When Ida still lived on the farm as a youngster, she did not get into town to attend church. She started a lifetime of devotion in the Methodist Church when she and Al married. Her experience on the remote farm during the Depression and the Homefront deprivations during WWII gave her a deep appreciation and commitment to the family pulling together for the prosperity of her family, community, church and friends. From her scarcity she made abundance. She truly knew how to love as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, Christian and teacher.

Every person who ever met Ida (affectionally known as Dama by family and so many others) felt the sincerity and depth of her love. We must now let her go, but we will never stop missing her.

A memorial service celebrating Ida’s life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Methodist Church, Seguin at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Cathe Evins officiating. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, or a charity of one’s choice.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.tresehewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Toxic Workplaces Drive Away One In Five American Workers

(Washington, DC) -- Toxic workplaces are causing one in five American workers to leave their current positions. That’s according to a new survey from the American Psychological Association, which showed that 19-percent of employees in the U.S. say their workplace is somewhat or very toxic. Those who reported a toxic workplace also were shown to be more than three times as likely to say they’ve experienced harm to their mental health at work.

Study: Gas Stove Emissions Cause Childhood Asthma, Early Death

(Stanford, CA) -- A new study claims gas stove emissions cause higher childhood asthma rates and even early death. According to the Stanford research published in the journal Science Advances, a mix of pollutants could be responsible for as many as 200-thousand such cases of asthma. And long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves could also be causing as many as 19-thousand adult deaths every year. Early in his presidency, the Biden administration suggested the Consumer Product Safety Commission could ban gas stoves.

Study: “Huff And Puff” Exercises Reduce Risk Of Early Death

(Adelaide) -- New research shows exercise that makes you “huff and puff” reduces your risk of an early death by 20 percent. Australian researchers analyzed nearly 200 studies from over the past two decades and looked at how cardiorespiratory fitness that works out the heart, lung and muscles predicted future health outcomes. What they found is that those with high fitness levels had a 20-percent lower risk of premature death, chronic disease and complications from poor health. The lead author of the study says the message is simple: “if you do a lot of huff and puff exercise, then your risk of dying early” is reduced.

Orangutan Seen Using

Medicinal Plants To Heal Wound

(Undated) -- Scientists say that for the first time they’ve witnessed an orangutan treating a wound with a medicinal plant. The orangutan, who lives in the Indonesian jungle, was seen chewing up a medicinal plant used by humans to treat pain and inflammation. He then rubbed the juices into a cheek injury and placed the chewed up leaf over the wound like a bandage. It’s not the first time a great ape has been observed using plants to heal, but it is the first time one has been seen doing it in such a direct way. The wound closed up within a month.
