Seguin PD officers holding on strong, getting the job done during COVID-19 pandemic By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

officers who continue to do great police work.

(Seguin) – As businesses continue to open and as more people begin leaving their homes, the safety of Seguin Police Officers and the citizens that they serve will continue to be top priority.

“I want to brag on the officers because they are still out there doing some great police work. (Recently), Officer Ben Lopez and Christian Gregory caught two burglars breaking into a home that the homeowner called us on and that was a great job. We are working back out at Mill Creek doing some close patrols out there. Officer Cody Maresh and Albert Sanchez and Justin Mendoza and Jesse Lopez all caught some suspicious people out there – ended up having drugs on them and they were up to no good at 4 o’clock in the morning out at Mill Creek so they are still doing police work but they are just doing it more cautiously with this new threat of the virus,” said Nichols.

Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols says from the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, officers at the Seguin Police Department not only quickly realized the uniqueness but seriousness of this whole situation and have worked even harder in serving and protecting the public. “I think the men and women are holding up well. This is so unique to us that you know we can see a gun, we can see a knife, we can see those kinds of threats but this illness, this virus is something you can’t see so it has everybody on edge a little bit but they are out still doing their job,” said Nichols.

As they venture out, Nichols says the public should also not be surprised to see some of the officers wearing protective masks or other safety gear. Again, he says when your job is interacting with the public, then safety is key to getting that job done.

Of course, at the onset of this national emergency, Nichols says the way they served and interacted with the public was immediately changed. “Some changes that we’ve made is if we come to your home to investigate something, we will ask for you to step outside and talk outside and try to keep our social distancing. We may ask to handle it or call and service them over the phone. If it’s something we feel like we can handle over the phone, we’ll try over the phone as well. We are still working on traffic enforcement on hazardous move violations but not so much on the lower level offenses again trying to limit our

exposures as well,” said Nichols. Nichols says protective measures were also implemented at the police department and will continue until further notice. “The lobby at the police department is still open. People can come down here if they need to. We are limiting traffic within the department

though just to the first floor of the lobby area so if you do need to come to the police department, we will obviously work with you and talk to you but we may (put) you outside to talk or not bring you up to the detective offices like we’ve historically done,” said Nichols. Despite having a new threat on the streets, Nichols says he could not be prouder of his

“The officers can wear masks. You may see some officers wearing masks as recommended by the CDC. It’s not mandatory at this point but we are offering the ability for our officers to do that,” said Nichols. Nichols again reminds the community that the Seguin Police Department is still available for emergencies 24/7. Again, those with life threatening emergencies are reminded to call 91-1. Those wishing to handle other business with the police department are encouraged to stop by or call 830-379-2123.

County set to receive COVID-19 update By Darren Dunn

of donations to help the county in its fight against the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

(Seguin) -- Members of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court are set to get another update on the local response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The court is slated to discuss the issue just one day after Governor Greg Abbott issued additional details about how he plans to reopen the state's economy. The county's emergency management office will provide an update on the number of cases currently in the county, and will look at the coordination of services that has been occurring locally in response to the virus. The Texas Department of State Health Service last week conducted a drive-thru testing site in Schertz. More than 40 tests were taken at the time. The number of positive

tests, if any, has not yet been released. The commissioners court agenda calls for potential action, if necessary, on the local disaster and public health emergency declaration related to COVID-19. The court is also scheduled to ratify and recognize some individuals who have made a number

In other business, commissioners are also slated to consider approval of an item that will allow the Guadalupe County Courthouse to get a bit of a bath. Commissioners are being asked to approve an approximate $15,000 expenditure that would allow Kelley Property Care, to fully power wash the historic courthouse. The company will use a solution of sodium hypochlorite and a degreaser to clean the building. The landscaping around the courthouse will be watered before, during and after the cleaning process, to ensure that the plants are properly protected. The commissioners court meeting will be conducted via video conference, and the public can access the meeting by visiting: .

SISD meets to discuss grades, ranking policy By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees tonight will consider updating the district's grading policy in response to the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The board will conduct a virtual meeting to discuss approval of a resolution that would update the current grade point average, class rank and grading policies for the current school year. Local schools have been closed since spring break, and students have been learning from home. The current instructional arrangement makes it more difficult for the district to use the regular grading and ranking system, especially for students who are graduating this year. Under the new policy, final class rankings for purposes of identifying students to be recognized for graduation honors, including the

top 10, valedictorian and salutatorian, shall be determined by considering grades available at the end of the fall semester. The 2020 spring semester will not be used for calculating GPA and class rank for the classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023. Those students will also receive pass, fail or incomplete for work done during the interrupted portion of the spring semester. In some cases, a numerical grade could be assigned.

employees. The special separation agreements are being offered as the district prepares for budgeting for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

The resolution ultimately gives Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez the authority to determine what, if any grades or progress reports were to be issued for the rest of the spring semester.

The additional severance would only be offered to employees who submitted their resignations by Friday, May 22. The idea is to try to conserve the district's financial resources for the new fiscal year. The board is also slated to meet in closed session to consider discussion on the potential instrument that will be used to conduct the superintendent's evaluation. This is not expected to be the actual evaluation, but

In other business, the school board is slated to consider approval of a resolution that offers additional incentives as part of a severance agreement that would be offered to district

Teachers and other professionals would be offered a separation incentive of $500 per year of service, with a minimum of 10 years of experience with the district. It would offer $250 per year of service for non-professional employees.

only a discussion about the documentation that will be used as part of that process. If any action is required, it would have to be taken in open session. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees meets via video or telephone conference at 6:30 p.m. today. The public will have access to the Zoom meeting but will not be able to speak during the meeting. Those who dial into the session, are asked to mute their telephone or electronic device. Questions or comments for the board can be submitted prior to the meeting via email. Those questions and comments must be submitted by noon today. Send them to . The public comments will be read during the "Audience with the Board" portion of the agenda. Drug investigation leads officers on vehicle pursuit

Suspect believed to have been repackaging marijuana prescription labels

Ashton Charles McKinney (Guadalupe County) – A short vehicle pursuit that began in Guadalupe County and ended in Wilson County has landed a Seguin man behind bars. Lt. John Flores of the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Narcotics Office, says the incident was reported earlier this month on Friday, April 17. Arrested was Ashton McKinney, 30, of Seguin. Flores says while conducting a narcotics investigation south of Segu in, investigators attempted a traffic stop involving McKinney, the driver of the vehicle.

He says while in the 22,000 block of State Highway 123 South, McKinney led narcotics investigators on a short vehicle pursuit and was subsequently apprehended near FM 1681 in Wilson County. “McKinney was found to be in possession of .86 grams of methamphetamine and .51 grams of methamphetamine. Narcotics investigators believed McKinney was fleeing to afford himself the opportunity to discard narcotics. Narcotics investigators subsequently conducted a search of the area

and recovered 40.75 grams of methamphetamine that had been discarded by McKinney,” said Flores. Flores says narcotics investigators also immediately developed information that McKinney had provided a false address in Cibolo. He says they were later able, to obtain and execute a state narcotics search warrant for a residence tied to McKinney in the 1900 block of Milam Street in Seguin. “Investigators located an additional 139.64 grams of methamphetamine, 13.18

grams of marijuana, four firearms, over 1,000 rounds of RECEIVE ammunition, and U.S. currency. A total of $2,517.00 20% OFF Premier Facial was seized between the two incidents. Narcotics - ORinvestigators also located marijuana packaging materials  20% OFF First Set of Eyelash Extensions and medical marijuana prescription labels at McKinney’s residence. Narcotics investigators 830-372-5200 believe McKinney was repackaging marijuana to simulate that it was high demand medical grade marijuana,” said Flores. McKinney was arrested and transported to the Guadalupe County Jail. He is charged with the manufacture or delivery of drugs and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. The Guadalupe County Narcotics Unit is composed of narcotics investigators from the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office, Seguin PD Special Crimes detectives, and Cibolo PD narcotics detectives.
