VITA Clinic gets a visit from the IRS

(Seguin) -- It’s that season again, and there are telltale signs of it all over campus at Texas Lutheran University. We’re not talking about spring, but Tax Season. It’s evident on Wednesday evenings, as the sun gets low in the sky and the cars line up along tree-lined Beck Drive— members of the community arriving to get their taxes done.

The TLU Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Clinic is offered every year and has grown by leaps and bounds with each passing April. It started out helping around 50 people, but this year, may serve as many as 300. As of this writing, TLU Accounting student volunteers have already completed 194 returns with the midApril deadline still weeks away.

In fact, the program is such a success that it caught the eye of none other than the IRS, which manages VITA programs all over the nation. Under normal circumstances, it’s not always good

news when the IRS comes calling, but this faction made their way to campus to see what’s happening at TLU’s clinic, and to offer congratulations on a job well done.

“This is a different model than we’ve seen,” says National Director of VITA Gwen Garren. She and her colleagues, who’ve traveled to Seguin from Atlanta, El Paso, and San Antonio, point to the way taxpayers line up in their cars and student volunteers go out to meet them, gather their tax information, and then return to one of Beck Center’s basement computer labs and get to work.

(Seguin) – Let the search begin. A handful of community egg hunts are on tap for this Easter Holiday weekend.

On the list today is the annual Easter Eggstravaganza free community event beginning at 10 a.m. at the Guadalupe Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Families are invited for an egg hunt, live music and a visit with the Easter Bunny. The rehab center is located at 1210 Eastwood Dr.

The 2nd annual community wide Eggapalooza also returns this Saturday at TLU’s Bulldog Stadium. The egg hunt will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The egg hunt is free and open to everyone, of all abilities, ages of 2 to 12.

Sponsoring the event are TLU Campus Ministries, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, Texas Coastline Roofing and Remodeling, Steel Chevrolet- Luling and The Believe It Foundation.

Bulldog Stadium is located at 820 Fritz St.

Local golfers are also inviting kids out to their annual egg hunt this Saturday. The Seguin Pan American Golf Association will host its annual City Easter Egg Hunt

Toyo Amador, one of the coordinators for the egg hunt, says families are welcome to join them for what he believes is Seguin’s oldest Easter Egg Hunt tradition.

“This is about, oh my gosh, about our 49th annual Easter Egg Hunt. I joined 47 years ago, and they were already doing it, so it’s been a while. We are fielding children between the ages of 2 and 4 and then between 5 and 6, 7 and 8 and 9 through 12 starting at 11 o’clock,” said Amador.

Amador says the best part is seeing the children enjoy the festivities year after year.

“We are hoping to get right around 100 to 150 kids,” Amador. “Everyone is welcome to come, the area community children. We have an excessive amount of Easter eggs, candy, baskets, bikes, prizes for the kids and all are welcome to come and join us. We are ready to hand out the prizes and for the kids to come and sweep them all up. They act like vacuum cleaner. We have them all out and then it’s over in five minutes,” said Amador.

A local truck and car club will also be hosting a special egg hunt on Saturday at Manuel Castilla Park. The egg hunt for local kids from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event sponsored by the South Flo Riderz will offer two different hunts. The first will begin at 2 p.m. for kids ages 1 to 5 followed by the second hunt at 2:30 p.m. for kids ages 6 to 12.

The event will also include food, drinks, prizes, music and a visit with the Easter Bunny.

Guadalupe County Schertz Annex Offices to temporary relocate

(Schertz) – The Guadalupe County Schertz Annex Building located at 1101 Elbel Road in Schertz is set to undergo an interior reconstruction project this spring. To enable the demolition phase to begin, the existing county offices will be temporarily relocated to Guadalupe County Service Center at 1052 FM 78 in Schertz

Guadalupe County Commissioner Michael Carpenter who will also have to relocate says, “The Schertz Annex building is in need of maintenance and renovation to better accommodate the current (and future) services being provided there. Highest on the list of design elements are accommodating voters during elections. A long, interior hallway will be constructed so that at peak times most citizens - if not all - will be indoors (shielded from the elements and near to additional and upgraded restroom facilities) during their wait in line to cast their vote.”

Meanwhile, the taxpayers simply park while they wait for their returns to be completed.

The service is offered to people who generally make less than $57,000 ayear, who have disabilities, or who have limited English-speaking abilities. VITA services are not only free, but they are also a reliable and trusted source for preparing tax returns.

And it’s not only the taxpayers who benefit from the service, but the students. “It truly impacts these kids,” says Dr. Sally Cook, professor and director of the Master of Accountancy Program at the university.

She’s been overseeing the clinic for some 20 years now. She says TLU’s model is mutually beneficial, with members of the community getting their tax returns done while students learn real world accounting. The students spend an average of 30 minutes on each return—each student typically doing three or four returns in an evening.

The relocation of services is already underway, and all departments are planned to be in their temporary space by the end of April. “I am very proud of my students for handling the increased volume this year even though we have a smaller group of tax preparers,” says Cook, turning the spotlight to her dedicated band of volunteers.

The Texas Lutheran University Tax Clinic is open to the public on Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Taxpayers should be sure to bring all their tax forms, a photo ID, and their Social Security card (to prevent identity theft of SS numbers).

If they are filing jointly, both taxpayers must be present. If they have dependents, they will need to provide the Social Security cards of the dependents as well.

The clinic closes for the season on April 13 and is closed Saturday, March 30, as students will be away on Easter break.

Ashlyn Strother Honored as NFCA National Pitcher of the Week

LOUISVILLE, KY -- Senior Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) has been named NFCA/Wilson National Pitcher of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. This marks the second time in Strother’s career she has received the major weekly award (first: Mar. 15, 2022).Strother, who was named the SCAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, led the No. 15 Texas Lutheran softball team (12-2, 5-1 SCAC) in the circle to four wins over the course of six games last week.

The Seabrook, Texas, native totaled 47 strikeouts and 23 innings of shutout ball across her four appearances. With those shutouts, Strother lowers her earned run average to a SCAC-leading 0.60. Strother now leads the SCAC with nine wins and 73 strikeouts this season.

Strother won all four of her starts, throwing the second perfect game of her career on March 22 and her third and fourth career individual no-hitters over the weekend. Strother would strike out 13 out of 15 batters faced in her perfect game against Dallas on Friday and 12 out of 16 batters faced in her no-hitter on Saturday, March 23. She allowed just eight baserunners across her four outings, holding opponents to go just 5-for-73 (.068). Strother would become TLU Softball’s all-time strikeout leader in her start against Southwestern on Monday, surpassing Cathy McBride’’s previous record of 502 over the course of the 1994 through 1997 seasons. Strother reached the record in 456.2 innings while McBride’s came over a career spanning a program record of 617.2 innings. Strother, who currently has 541 strikeouts, is seventh amongst active Division-III pitchers in career strikeouts and ranks fourth in SCAC history in the category. The shutout also marked the 28th of her career, ranking second amongst active Division-III pitchers.

This is the first time this season a Bulldog has been recognized by the NFCA for a weekly award.

Carolyn Emma (Hartmann) Atzger, age 79, passed away on March 27, 2024. She was born on December 14, 1944, in Marion, Texas to Edna (Staats) Hartmann and Achilles Hartmann. Carolyn attended school in Marion and graduated in 1963 where she was Salutatorian of her graduating class. On December 14, 1968, she married Eugene Atzger at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin, Texas. Following high school, Carolyn worked at Sagebiel’s Home & Auto Center from 1963 to 1966. She began a long career in 1966 with Donegan Insurance Agency which later became Barnard-Donegan Insurance. Her keen sense of accountability served the agency well as she meticulously managed the financial records for 45 years. Carolyn was not afraid to embrace technology when the agency transitioned from hard copy records to the digital age. She enjoyed learning more about technology, even beyond retirement.

She made many friends in the community being an active member of the St. James School and Church community. She served on the PTA for many years and there was not one field trip or class party she missed while Tricia, her daughter, attended St. James School. Following her retirement, Carolyn remained active in the church community by helping count weekly contributions and participating in other various parish functions. She also participated in the TOPS Chapter #1201 for many years.

Carolyn and Gene enjoyed traveling and camping. Some of her favorite trips were to Branson, Missouri, and Alpine, Texas. She also cherished her granddaughters, Tylynn and Campbell. Omie, as they called her, enjoyed sewing them dresses when they were young. They were known to call her requesting a new dress in their recent favorite colors. Carolyn always looked forward to spending time with the girls during their summer vacations and providing them the opportunity to attend local summer camps at the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. Robert Lee Hill, age 85 of Seguin, passed away on March 24, 2024. Robert was born on November 18, 1938, in Nixon, Texas to Lou (Dromgoole) and Perry Moses Hill.

Robert and Betty were active members of the Dewville Methodist Church. He loved going out for a great meal, especially with his church family whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed talking to everyone who would listen to memories or any other subject that might come up.

Robert is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, his parents, great-grandson, Zane Pieprzica, and his brother Wayne Hill.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Pawelek and husband Isidore and

grandchildren’s milestones and receiving many pictures of them on her digital frame.

Carolyn was also known for her love of baking, especially her homemade pecan pies made with the fresh pecans harvested from their yard. Friends often requested her pies when they traveled to Schulenberg during the Thanksgiving holidays. For the longest time, Tricia thought the recipe was an heirloom family recipe – only to find out later that the recipe was on the back of the Karo syrup bottle.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents and survived by her husband of 55 years, Eugene Atzger; daughter, Tricia (Gregory) John; granddaughters, Tylynn (Maverick) Culp, and Campbell (Brandon) Day; great-grandchildren, Cooper Day, Caspar, Io, and Seren Culp.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Friday, April 5, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Gregory J. Nevlud officiating. Entombment will follow in the St. James Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Michael McFarland, Tom Sedlacek, Brandon Allen, Brandon Day, Maverick Culp, and Erich Strey. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bruce Kraft, Bryan Wayne Kraft, Roger Kraft, and Ben Marrou.

The family is greatly appreciative of the love and support of their family and friends for the many phone calls, visits, and cards. Frances Lillian Kluth Altherr, age 82 of Seguin passed away on March 17, 2024. Frances was born on November 12, 1941, in Guadalupe County, Texas to Norma Mary (Stautzenberger) and Erwin Kluth.

In May 1986, Frances (Kluth) Schwarzlose married Paul Altherr and they enjoyed 35 years of marriage together. With their love of God, they shared a beautiful life.

She and Paul faithfully attended St. James Catholic Church, where she participated in Saint Ann’s Circle. They were also members of the American Legion Post #245, where she held many posts in the Ladies Auxiliary. She and Paul loved to go camping and fishing, having many adventures at the state parks. She had a talent for sewing and crocheting, making clothes and blankets for her family. She was a fabulous cook, making delicious holiday meals and family dinners. She also loved gardening, enjoying many plants and flowers in and around their home. But most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, handing down her many talents and creating precious memories.

Frances is preceded in death by her loving husband Paul Altherr, her parents, sisters, Joyce Koepsel and Clara Brownfield, and a baby brother.

Nick P. Evola, Jr, age 84, of Geronimo, Texas passed away on March 26, 2024.

Nick was born on October 13, 1939, in Independence, Louisiana to Lena Evola Barcia (Noto) & Nick P. Evola, Sr.

Nick or “Mr. Nick” (if you were younger) grew in Independence, graduated high school, and joined the Army where he served as a nurse in Ft. Dix, New Jersey. After marrying the love of his life, Marena J. Schubert Evola, they moved back to Louisiana, then to Texas where they settled in Geronimo in 1972.

Nick was a social person & enjoyed getting out and about, meeting new friends, serving in the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department as an EMT & Firefighter, being involved in the Catholic Church (serving as usher & Eucharist minister), working at the hospital as a surgical tech (Christus Santa Rosa & Guadalupe Valley

Regional) & his favorite as a cashier for HEB; the customers patiently waiting in line to be cashed out by Mr. Nick. He loved his gardening (a BIG garden), butchering (he had his own “at home” butcher shop), his woodworking projects, cooking & BBQing, and his favorite pastime –watching the western TV shows.

Nick was a good & strong husband, father, uncle, and grandfather (Popo). He will be tremendously missed by his family & friends.

Nick is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Marena, his parents, his brothers Peter & Joseph, and his daughter, Grace Evola-Bourlon.

Nick is survived by his children, Johanna, N. Philip, III (Izumi), Paul (Chrissy), and Ronald (Michele); son-in-law, Richard Bourlon; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, & many nieces & nephews.

Visitation will begin on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 9:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:30 am and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am including military honors. Russell Wayne Clopton passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Saturday, March 23, 2024. Russell was born in Seguin, TX, on September 24, 1973, to Rusty and Sandy Clopton. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1992, and received a BA in English Studies from Texas Lutheran University in 1998.

On March 7, 1998, he married his high school sweetheart, Pamela Clark.

He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Jack and Charlotte Clopton, and maternal grandparents, Marvin and Thusnelda Friedeck.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Pamela; his parents; brother, David (Susan) Clopton; in-laws, David and Judy Clark; sister-inlaw, Cindy (Steve) Meeker; brother-in-law, Russell Clark; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be 10am, Friday, March 29th at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A visitation will be 6-8pm, Thursday, March 28th, also at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.

Another Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against Nurse (Butler County, PA) -- Another wrongful death lawsuit is being filed against a Pennsylvania nurse. That nurse, Heather Pressdee, is already facing several charges and lawsuits after she allegedly administered lethal doses of insulin to patients at five different facilities between 2020 and 2023. The latest lawsuit was filed by the family of Nicholas Cymbol, which claims Pressdee gave Cymbol a lethal dose of insulin while she was a unit manager at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Authorities estimate that about 20 patients died while in Pressdee’s care. She faces several charges, including homicide, attempted murder and aggravated assault.

ACLU Sues Ohio Over Trans Care Ban (Columbus, OH) -- The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the state of Ohio over a new law that will ban gender-affirming care for minors. The ACLU filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, arguing the ban is unconstitutional and “will cause severe harm to transgender youth.” The lawsuit adds that “personal, private medical decisions should remain between families and doctors.” The law will take effect in April and will ban minors from accessing medical treatments including puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy.

Hochul Comments On Arguments In Mifepristone Case (Albany, NY) -- New York Governor Kathy Hochul thinks there will be outrage if the Supreme Court makes it hard for women to have access to a popular abortion pill. The Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday on whether to limit access to the drug mifepristone [[ mif-ah-priss-tone ]]. The Biden administration and manufacturer of the drug are seeking to reverse a Texas lower-court ruling that would make it more difficult for women across the country to obtain the medication. An appeals court ruled the FDA failed to follow proper procedures when it loosened regulations on the use of mifepristone.

Hospitals Adding Billings In ‘Facility Fee’ For Routine Care (New York, NY) -- As hospitals buy up more out-patient medical groups, hundreds-of-dollars in ‘facility fees’ are being tacked onto routine medical care. Many hospital systems now get at least half their revenue from patients who aren’t admitted. The fees raise prices by hundreds of dollars for standard medical care, including colonoscopies, mammograms and heart screening. Hospitals say the fees for outpatient services help to cover hospital overhead costs. Congress has proposed limiting fees covered by Medicare, which advisers say likely overpaid for services by about six-billion dollars in 2021.

Registration Open for City Summer Day Camp

Registration is now open for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Just for Kids Summer Day Camp program for those who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade, not to exceed 11 years of age. The camp operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday, June 3 to Friday, Aug. 2. There is a $25 registration fee due at the time of registration and the weekly fee is $110. Business Improvement Grant (BIG) Program

The City of Seguin is now accepting applications for the Business Improvement Grant (BIG) Program. Applicants may be eligible to receive up to a 75 percent matching grant, with a maximum grant awarded to an applicant not to exceed $10,000. Improvements and other expenditures eligible under the Seguin BIG Program include facade improvements, sign improvements, site improvements, and other real property improvements. The Texas Lutheran University Tax Clinic will be open to the public through Monday, April 15. Hours of operation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
