Deadline arrives for large food distribution event this weekend

Guadalupe County, Seguin ISD, SA Food Bank joining forces

(Seguin) -- Today is your last chance to register for this weekend’s food distribution event.

Guadalupe County this Saturday will be joining forces with the Seguin ISD and the San Antonio Food Bank in hosting the Community Food Distribution Event. Teams of volunteers will be on hand to help load vehicles this Saturday in the Seguin ISD Administration Building parking lot at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.

Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says the county continues to partner up with area school districts to provide the much-need food assistance to all families in the area.

“We are kind of trying to bring an initiative to fighting the hunger in the county and feeding

everybody and so these are just one of the spots that we are going to be at this weekend at the Seguin ISD Administrative Office there in Seguin. Next month, we will be in Marion and the following month, we will be back in the Schertz-Cibolo area. The Commissioners Court has dedicated some funds to the San Antonio Food Bank over the past few years. This year, we allocated some of our ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funding towards the food bank just to make sure because they stepped up during the time of need for the communities and began to feed everybody and so right now, we are just hosting those and my department is fortunate enough to lead that initiative for that community,” said Pinder.

They're bringin' it BACK...

Spirits are rising as word of plans for the Riverside Cemetery Tour spreads. The tour lay dormant after the Covid Pandemic, but the Affiliation of Seguin Women’s Clubs promises to resurrect it this fall, Oct. 27, 2024 as part of Seguin’s Pecan Fest. A preliminary walkthrough by representatives of the three clubs recently focused on the women of Seguin and the many historical gravesites where some of Seguin’s most interesting ancestors rest. Conferring in front of the Nolte Mausoleum are Ann Louise Hagerty, Jennifer Ehlers, Gerry Richardson, Kristen Haener, Diane Gesick and Yvonne De La Rosa. Details of the tour and the personalities to be featured are forthcoming. Courtesy photo.

Need free legal advice?

Free Legal Advice Clinic set for TONIGHT in Seguin

(Seguin) -- You no longer have to lose sleep or have that lingering legal question in the back of your head.

A Free Legal Advice Clinic will be held today at the Seguin Public Library.

Hosting the event is The Central Texas Dispute Resolution Center.

Connie Sheppard, who represents the group, says the clinic is simple and invites individuals to stop by with their non-criminal legal issues.

“Central Texas Dispute Resolution Center was designed to help families and individuals who couldn’t afford the high cost of mediation to be able to afford mediation. We do quite a bit of court mediation for families that meet our guidelines and we can do HOA issues. We can do pet owner issues. We can do neighbor issues so any kind of mediation or any kind of conflict that there is, we can use mediation to help solve it and our goal is to solve conflict peacefully using mediation skills,” said Sheppard.

Sheppard says individuals are asked to bring their papers or information related to their legal concern. They will then get to meet with attorneys on a first come, first serve basis.

“When we host our legal clinics, the legal clinics are meant for people to come in and get 10 to 15 minutes of legal advice. It won’t solve any problems but it will let them head in the right direction and we will let anybody come in and ask questions. We have attorneys who have graciously volunteered their time so we do have expert attorneys there. We don’t give the legal advice. We are just facilitating the ability for people to get a little bit of legal advice, to meet an attorney to find out maybe

somebody wants to know if they need to probate a will. Maybe somebody wants to know what is the next step if they want a divorce. Maybe somebody has a question about a landlord/tenant issue, really just any kind of question that they want to say, ‘Do I need legal help? Where could I go? What can I do and am I headed in the right direction?’ said Sheppard.

Sheppard says the Free Legal Aid Clinic has proven beneficial for hundreds of individuals. She says all folks need sometimes is a step in the right direction.

“I enjoy the fact that we can let people find out if they are headed in the right direction -- to get some unbiased, unpaid for -- just some good ole advice from an attorney on whether they need to go to Step A or Step B and a lot of people leave more relaxed because they know they are doing the right thing or they know which way to go or they have had their question answered so I see a lot of relief on peoples’ faces when they leave. We are just glad that we are able to help people know which direction to head. A lot of times, you just want somebody to tell you ‘yes, you are doing good or no, here’s something you need to think about.’ So, that’s what we can provided,” said Sheppard.

The Central Texas DRC serves approximately 500,000 citizens in Hays, Comal, Caldwell and Guadalupe Counties. Future legal advice clinics are again expected to be scheduled very soon in Guadalupe County. Organizations wishing to serve as a host site for a future clinic are asked to visit the group’s website centexdrc.org for additional details.

Tonight’s Free Legal Advice Clinic will be held at the library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Navarro, Marion ISD to keep classroom doors OPEN during eclipse

(Guadalupe County) -- Both Navarro and Marion ISD schools will be open on the day of the solar eclipse scheduled for Monday, April 8. The announcement comes after the Seguin ISD decided to cancel its classes due to a considerable amount of personnel absences on that day.

Navarro ISD officials stated, “Many of our classes will have special activities planned and centered around this amazing event.”

Marion ISD officials also stated on its social media pages that “On April 8th, 2024, all students and staff will be given the opportunity to safely view the total solar eclipse that will cross over North America.” They add, “we have purchased eclipse-safety glasses for all students and staff to make this experience safe and enjoyable.”

Over the last few weeks, other school districts, especially those along the solar eclipse viewing line, have stated that an influx of traffic and people coming into the area to view the eclipse would not only affect regular school traffic and bus schedules, but could also impact the response time should there be an emergency at one of their campuses.

Food, continued.

Pinder says he encourages anyone who is in need of food to stop by. He says to ensure enough food, families and individuals should register by the end of today.

“Everybody in the county is eligible for this food distribution. You sign up online. You fill out some food bank information, some questionnaires. They get some demographics from you but whether you need food or you know a family member that needs food, you can sign up and show up. The registration does end Friday. They have to turn it off so we can get some initial counts. We do project to have a higher number of folks in the community that need some assistance. I know there are some food distributions throughout Seguin that you see on the regular that have long lines so even if you go to those lines, you are eligible to come to this. There are no

Pinder says volunteers are crucial to the success of this initiative and are warmly welcomed to participate. Those willing to lend a hand are encouraged to arrive by 8

a.m. The distribution is expected to last for a few hours.

Those wishing to volunteer are also encouraged to signup online at https://forms.gle/ Jvfy9WVhrgrq4w948

The food drive begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. Registration, again, is encouraged by 5 p.m. today.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 300 hundred families had already signed up for food.

Abortion Groups Asked Not To Hand Out Emergency Contraceptives At Concerts

(St. Louis, MO) -- Abortion rights groups will no longer hand out free emergency contraceptives at Olivia Rodrigo concerts. That’s due to the nationwide publicity of the singer’s recent concert in St. Louis where that was done. Her management team has requested that in the future abortion rights groups refrain from handing out the materials at upcoming shows. They cited children being present at Rodrigo’s concerts as the reason. In a statement to Rolling Stone, the Missouri Abortion Fund said that Rodrigo invited the group to have a booth at her performance, but it was their decision to pass out the free contraceptives.
