Voters reminded to bring ID's, utilize curbside voting if needed

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County’s top election official is sharing a few reminders with voters before heading out to the polls.

Lisa Hayes, Guadalupe County elections administrator, says the first important item is their ID.

“They should bring a photo ID, a Texas driver’s license, passport, military ID something of that nature because they need to present a voter ID when they vote,” said Hayes.

Upon having their information pulled up, Hayes says voters are reminded that they will either have to choose a Republican or Democratic ballot.

In Guadalupe County, there are a couple of locally contested races seeking the GOP nomination. Among those are the position of Guadalupe County Sheriff and Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1. Elections, pg. 3

Election arrives for local candidates

(Seguin) -- It's election day. Voters will be heading to the polls for this year's March 5 Democratic and Republican Primary.

In Guadalupe County, the locally contested races all appear on the Republican ballot.

The list of local races includes the matchup for Guadalupe County Sheriff. Both Patrick Pinder and Joshua Ray are seeking the GOP nomination. Both look to replace retiring Sheriff Arnold Zwicke who has spent more than 20 years in office. The winner of this race today will run unopposed during the general election in November. Sheriff Zwicke's term runs through the end of this year, and the new sheriff would take office on January 1, 2025.

Another heavily contested race on the Republican ballot is Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1. Five hopefuls are looking to fill the big shoes belonging to Commissioner Greg Seidenberger who has also opted to retire. Those vying for the seat include Candidates James

Ransdell; Clint Taft; Dustin Engelke, Bryan Underwood and Jacqueline "Jackie" Ott.

The winner of this GOP nomination will earn the right to face the Democratic nominee, Nahomie Alanis; and the Libertarian nominee, Nolan Schmidt, who are both running unopposed for the nominations of their respective parties.

A hotly contested race for the Republican nomination for the District 44 seat in the Texas House of Representatives will also appear on the ballot. Incumbent State Representative John Kuempel is being challenged by three candidates, including Alan Schoolcraft, David Freimarck and Greg Switzer.

Those selecting the Republican ballot will also be weighing in on 13 party propositions. The propositions are not a vote for law but simply a way to poll party voters on various topics. It should be noted that there are no propositions appearing on the Democratic ballot.

Families invited to join circus company under the big top

Tonight marks final performance for the Carden Circus

(Seguin) -- The thrills and frills of a circus continue in Seguin tonight.

The Carden International Circus is proud to announce the all - new Spectacular Extreme Circus, featuring acts of talented and jaw-dropping performances, at the Seguin Events Complex Rodeo Arena. The circus, which arrived and performed Monday, is preparing for another night of entertainment.

The Spectacular Extreme Circus includes talent from across the globe including Africa, Mongolia, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, and of course, the U.S.A.

Doors open one hour before show time for the Preshow Festivities including performer meet and greets, animal rides, interactive fun, and so much more.

Today’s show time is 6:30 p.m.

General Admission tickets are $20 online or $25 at the box office with a limited number of $35 VIP seating

Elections, continued.

There are no contested Democratic races for any of these positions. This means that if voters would like to vote for sheriff or want a say in Pct. 1, then they will have to ask for a Republican ballot when they arrive at their polling site.

While at the polling site, Hayes says voters will have to adhere to a few voting rules. She says these rules are designed to make the process fair and easy.

“We are not allowed to wear any kind of campaigning or election wearing gear within 100 feet of the polls. They can not have a recording device in the polling place which means they can’t be on their phone. They can’t bring their sample ballot on their phone. They can bring an actual paper sample ballot but they can’t plan on having their phone out in the polling place and that’s different than other states so I think it’s important

available. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www. spectacularcircus.com or at the box office one hour before each show time at the rodeo box office. Free kids passes plus other online deals to enjoy the circus can also be found on the KWED Facebook page.

for our voters especially who are new to our state to understand that the rules are a little bit different and if they have questions, they can definitely call the elections office and we are happy to walk them through those,” said Hayes.

Being unable to physically go inside a polling location should also not prevent someone from casting their vote.

Hayes says voters are encouraged to utilize or share with someone else about their curbside service.

“So the way curbside voting works is there should be two parking places at every polling place that is designated as a curbside voting parking spot. So, the voters just need to follow the instructions on the sign. They can call or text the number on the sign and let whoever answers the phone know that they are there to vote curbside and a poll worker will come out for their ID and begin the curbside voting process with the

voter so the voter can vote from the convenience of their vehicle. The intention behind curbside voting is for voters who are physically unable to enter the polling place without causing themselves bodily harm. So, it’s a great tool for voters who want to have that in-person voting experience but just physically are not capable of entering the polling place and every one of our polling places has curbside voting early and election day,” said Hayes.

A total of 36 Vote Centers or polling locations will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Vote Centers allow Guadalupe County residents to vote at any one of the polling locations throughout the county.

Election coverage, courtesy of Gift and Gourmet, will get underway today at 7:05 p.m.

Results can be heard live on AM 1580 KWED or at SeguinToday.com.

BEYOND SEGUIN BORDERS: Texas-style EDM festival kicks off this weekend

(Austin) — Just an hour from Seguin, street art and electronic dance music are set to collide this weekend as ILLfest kicks off for a two-day musical experience. The event is set to start its sixth year on March 9 and 10 at the Concourse Project Festival Grounds in Austin, where attendees will experience music, street art, and more than a little Texas EDM culture.

After taking a year off, this year’s festival organizers Disco Donnie Presents (DDP) are excited to work with the ILLfest team to take it to the next level. In part, they plan to do this through custom mural exhibits painted specifically for the occasion.

“Each year ILLfest exhibits over 6,000+ square feet of newly created mural art walls, and boasts over 30,000+ square feet of world-

renown muralist pieces in its collection,” DDP said. “In total, the festival has experienced five editions, each one more vibrant and artistically boundless than the last.”

With only two days of festival to pack in as much art and music as possible, ILLfest has cultivated a lineup with names EDM fans will recognize, with Rezz headlining on Saturday and Black Tiger Sex Machine on Sunday. Other notable performers include Champagne Drip, Tape B, Dab the Sky, Dr. Fresch, Virtual Riot, Nostalgix, Space Wizard with more recently added.

“ILLfest is excited to introduce the following exciting additions to the 2024 lineup,” DDP said. “Get ready to groove to the beats of Sidepiece as they join the stellar

Candidates, continued.

Voters will simply be asked to answer either Yes or No to items such as "Texas should eliminate all property taxes without increasing Texan's overall tax burden" and Texas urges the United States Congress not to grant any form of amnesty or a pathway to legalization for illegal aliens."

A total of 36 Vote Centers or polling locations are open today throughout Guadalupe County.

roster of artists set to captivate the audience. Isenberg is set to bring his unique talent, adding to the already incredible musical journey that awaits festival-goers. Keep an eye out for emerging talents including Havoc, Emski, Spades and more.”

Guadalupe County residents who travel to Austin will find a host of music-centered events over the weekend as the city also kicks off its annual SXSW conference, which draws crowds from all over the country and runs March 8 – 16.

The official ILLfest pre-party events kick off Friday night, with DJ Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal – yes, SHAQ!) appearing with Jantsen at the Concourse Project. Tickets for ILLfest are available at illfest.com, where lineups, merch, and more information are also available.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thanks to Vote Centers, Guadalupe County residents are no longer restricted to specific polling sites and can vote in any one of the 36 locations.

KWED will have live election coverage shortly after the polls close a 7 p.m. Results can be heard live on AM 1580 KWED or online at SeguinToday.com. Election results are being brought to listeners courtesy of Gift and Gourmet.

Zuniga’s first team selection leads five Lady Matadors named to 26-5A All-District teams

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran baseball swept a doubleheader against Vermont State Castleton with a 12-4 win in seven innings and a 17-13 win on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field to win the series after dropping Friday night’s game to the Spartans.

The Bulldogs (7-6) tagged Spartan pitching for 14 hits in game one, including a double, a program record three triples, and two homers. Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and two runs scored, while Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

Brendan Beard (Coldspring/ Coldspring-Oakhurst) pitched a complete game and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He struck out eight batters and picked up his third win of the season.

Already leading 5-2, the Bulldogs put together a seven run bottom of the sixth inning to blow the game open. The hit parade started with a triple from Goudeau before Vasquez drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single. After a walk to Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/ Stony Point), Xavier Arias (La Vernia/Nixon-Smiley) launched a three-run homer to make the score 9-2. Castleton went to the bullpen and the Bulldogs kept hitting. After a triple from Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial),

Chase Bourgeois (League City/ Clear Falls) hit an RBI single, R.J. Carrillo (Alice/Alice) hit an RBI single, and Cole Cravens (Round Rock/Round Rock) capped off the scoring by scoring on a wild pitch.

Texas Lutheran scored the first runs of the game in the second courtesy of a three-run homer from Mason Goudeau. An RBI double from Vasquez and an RBI triple from Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) in the fourth put five runs on the board for the Bulldogs before the explosive sixth inning.

In game two, Texas Lutheran blasted three home runs and had 12 total hits. Adam Peavy finished 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs, and four runs scored, while Aric Vasquez was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBis and two runs scored and Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs

and a run scored.

JT Taylor (Conroe/Fort Bend Christian) started and pitched five innings with five strikeouts and two runs allowed. Taylor picked up his third win of the season and is now 3-1 on the season.

Vermont State Castleton took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs responded with solo home runs from Peavy and Garrett Helpenstill (Pearland/ Lutheran South) in the first two of 12 unanswered runs over the four innings to take a 12-2 lead.

Texas Lutheran took advantage of four Spartans errors to cross five runs in the third inning with the only RBIs coming on a bases loaded walk to Peavy and a sacrifice fly by Chase Bourgeois.

A pair of two RBI singles from Peavy and Goudeau in the fourth stretched the Bulldogs lead to 112. An RBI single from Tyler Post

gave the Bulldogs a commanding 12-2 lead after five innings.

After shrinking the Bulldogs lead to 12-3 in the sixth, the Spartans exploded for an eight run seventh inning to cut the TLU lead to 12-11.

Texas Lutheran responded with five runs in the eighth inning to retake control of Saturday evening’s contest. After loading the bases to start the inning, Adam Peavy scored following a Castleton throwing error after attempting to turn a double play. A two-out, two-RBI double from Hayden Kesselring sparked a twoout rally from the Bulldogs before Aric Vasquez would hit a two-run home run that would serve as the dagger Saturday evening.

Texas Lutheran will return to Katt-Isbel Field on Sunday, March 3, as they continue their 13-game home stand by hosting DeSales University in non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM. All games this weekend will be streamed on TLU’s YouTube Channel, TLU+. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.

With perfect grammar and a hint of aristocracy, Nancy was seldom without comment and left no one wondering of her opinion. With far-ranging interests from history to travel, there was no need for Google when Nancy was in the room. Although occasionally wrong, she was never in doubt.

From talking with Nancy, one might have deduced she was tutored in Buckingham Palace; however, she was born in the small town of Bogata in northeast Texas on July 8th, 1942, to Jack and Commie Rhoads. She attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, and, after graduating, moved to Seguin with her parents. In 1963, she met her future husband, Henry, while spending time at the Lake Breeze Ski Lodge on Lake McQueeney. Henry and Nancy were wed on August 1st, 1964.

Throughout her years in Seguin, Nancy was active in many groups, clubs and organizations. Although she would be ashamed to admit it now, in the 1960’s, she and Henry were heavily involved in the local democratic party, leading to a lifetime of interest in politics and government. She was a longtime member and occasional president of the Seguin Shakespeare Club, where she could let her fantasies of royal heritage blossom. She was also active with the Seguin Tejas Club, several local book clubs, the Crystal Clear Water board and the Vestry of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Nancy served as president of the Seguin ISD School Board where her often colorful commentary earned her many friends and an occasional foe.

Henry and Nancy loved to travel. Throughout their 38-year marriage, they

traveled the continental US in Henry’s different airplanes and had wonderful adventures. They also traveled internationally, spending time in England and Germany over several visits. In the late 1990’s, they bought a ranch in Marfa, Texas where they had great fun building a ranch house and living like Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor.

Forever a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and her TCU Horned Frogs, she loved watching football, but also enjoyed playing tennis with her friends. In the 1980’s, she spent many summer days at Max Starcke Park playing doubles tennis or by the pool at the Ski Lodge with her forever-best-friend, Elizabeth Walker.

After Henry’s death in 2002, Nancy enjoyed cooking and spending time with her many grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of her friends, playing bridge and spending time in various book clubs or with other church members.

Nancy was loved by those around her and will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Phillip Ewald and her Husband Henry. She is survived by her brother Robert Rhoads of Dallas, her daughter Donna Gregg and husband George of Colorado Springs, Donna’s sons James and Dane, and her son John Ewald of Seguin and his daughters, Caroline, Jacqueline, Annabelle, Mary Claire, Savannah and Margaret.

A memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeogh Hall.

Private interment will be held in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Nolte, Seguin, Texas, 78155.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Study: Over A Billion People Are Obese (London) -- New research suggests over a billion people worldwide are obese. Global estimates published in The Lancet claim 880-million adults and nearly 160-million children live with obesity. The study ranked about 190 countries in terms of obesity, and the U.S. came in tenth place for men and 36th for women. The study says 42-percent of the adult male population in the U.S. is clinically obese.

Smoking Weed Could Lead To Higher Risk

Of Heart Attack

And Stroke (San Francisco, CA) -- Smoking weed frequently could lead to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. That’s according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association led by UCSF researchers and funded by the National Institutes of Health. If you use cannabis daily, predominately by smoking it, you may increase your risk of heart attack by 25-percent and stroke by 42-percent. If you dabble weekly, you’re at a three-percent higher risk for heart attack and a five-percent higher risk for stroke. It’s unclear whether there is a direct causation between smoking marijuana and heart attacks and stroke, but this is one of the largest studies to show a connection between marijuana use and cardiovascular health.

Clark Calls For House Vote On IVF

(Undated) -- Massachusetts Congresswoman Katherine Clark wants a House vote on a bill to protect in-vitro fertilization. She called the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos used in the procedure are children, a “national threat to the health freedom of women” everywhere. Clark said over 100 House Republicans are sponsoring a bill that would make the Alabama ruling a federal law.

Brand Of Mouthwash Recalled

Over Risk Of Child Poisoning

(New York, NY) -- A brand of hydrogen peroxide mouthwash is getting recalled for risks of poisoning in children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Heritage Store Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash’s packaging is not child-resistant as is required for products that contain a certain amount of ethanol. It said consumers should move the mouthwash to a place that children cannot reach. The Utah-based manufacturer of the mouthwash, Nutraceutical Corporation, is working on letting customers know and offering refunds or replacements.
