Subtraction Fact Fluency allows students to deepen their conceptual subtraction and build fact fluency. Students analyze visual representations and decompose numbers using manipulatives to explore how larger numbers can be broken down to solve targeted subtraction facts. They will use number lines, ten frames, bar models, games, and stories to explore different strategies. Seesaw’s multimodal tools, combined with opportunities for students to connect and reflect, enhance student engagement and support differentiation. Every student work sample provides teachers with focused insights to assess understanding and track growth. In addition, the formative assessments give data to show when students have reached mastery or if continued practice is needed.

Best Practices

Self-Reflection: Students are encouraged to make and share observations before learning and connect and explain their thinking after learning.

Scaffolds & Support: Lessons should be modeled and introduced as a whole group before assigning for students to complete independently.

Engaging Practice: Incorporate games into daily math centers or as warm-up exercises.

Data-Driven Instruction: Use the auto-graded fluency assessment to track students’ growth and mastery of addition facts. Assessment can be set to Practice Mode and assigned multiple times.
