Leadership Letter From 2002-2013, SEED ran the first basketball-focused, student-athlete high school academy in Africa (SEED Academy). During that time, we helped more than 100 young Senegalese men leverage their athletic and academic talents to improve their lives, successfully placing them in university or assisting them in finding employment — a 95% success rate in a country where only 5% of the population attends university.

That stellar track record told us that SEED could do even more. In 2013 we identified two new, core opportunities: creating programming to reach students at a younger age — during elementary and middle school — to tackle Senegal’s high dropout rates; and programming for girls.

Since then we have launched three new programs — SEED Rise, SEED Girls and Live, Learn & Play — which have allowed our program model to reach thousands of additional youth. Through these programs we have engaged a younger demographic, created a comprehensive youth development model, and added thousands of girls to our program.

The results of our growth can be measured both domestically and abroad. In Senegal, since 2013, we’ve increased our number of students served from 20 to more than 8,000, we’ve expanded our program from one primary location in Thies to more than 40 schools and youth basketball clubs across the country, and our students have outperformed their peers on all major school exam indicators. Additionally, we have increased our staff from 4 full-time employees to more than 20 full-time and part-time staff.

Internationally, we have grown our programming to include career services training for our alumni in the United States, and just this past summer we placed our first three girls in international schools (two in the U.S. and one in France).

As we look forward to our 14th program year, we will continue to hone our program model while expanding to more regions across the country — and we will launch our first program outside of Senegal.

In February 2016, we will begin a pilot program for approximately 100 middle school youth in The Gambia.

Vision Founded in 1998 by Amadou Gallo Fall, the SEED Project (Sports for Education and Economic Development) uses basketball as a platform to engage youth in academic, athletic and leadership programs. Our programs are designed to combat Senegal’s low school attendance rates (5% university attendance) and high unemployment (50% country-wide). Through this, we will re-define the student-athlete model and develop socially conscious scholars that will continue to drive Africa forward.

We currently serve more than 8,000 students (grades K-College) in Senegal and the United States, and train more than 100 coaches annually. 95% of all of our students have either matriculated to university or secured a job upon leaving SEED.

SEED ACADEMY

Overview Launched in 2002, the SEED Academy is the first basketball studentathlete academy in Africa. This elite boarding school environment provides up to 40 high potential student-athlete, boys and girls (grades 6-12), with a rigorous academic experience and elite level athletic training.

Each student’s primary goal is to graduate high school and matriculate to university or secure a quality job upon leaving the program. Many of our graduates leverage their athletic talents and secure university scholarships at some of the top institutions around the world to continue their studies.

Fatou Diagne SEED Academy Girls, 12th Grade Standing at 6’5, Fatou Diagne was never comfortable with her height until she discovered basketball at the age of 14.

Having grown up near the SEED Academy facility, she aspired to one day be a member of the program. However, without a SEED girls team and limited opportunities for girls to play basketball in Senegal, she did not know if her dreams would ever come true. When SEED Girls launched in 2013, Fatou was one of the first girls to attend the tryout, and impressed the coaches with her work ethic and drive to succeed.

Fatou entered SEED Academy’s inaugural girls class as a senior in high school - an extremely challenging year for Senegalese students. Seniors are required to pass the daunting BAC exam (31% national pass rate) to move on to college. Despite attracting interest from top universities in the U.S. to attend school on a basketball scholarship, Fatou failed the exam and was forced to repeat her senior year.

Fatou returned to SEED in 2014 and, to her surprise, was elected captain of the team. She fought through adversity and had an outstanding year that culminated with her passing the BAC and earning a scholarship to attend Florida Gulf Coast College in the U.S. where she will spend one year before moving on to a 4-year university.

While basketball has played a significant role in her life, it does not define her. Fatou wishes to return to Senegal after university and invest in her country’s development. Specifically, she wants to create more opportunities for young women to succeed in her country and to make sure that all young Senegalese girls have the same opportunity to play sports and go to school like her male classmates.

SEED RISE

Overview Launched in 2013, SEED Rise is an after-school, youth development program for 325 boys and girls, grades K-12, from across Senegal. Rise provides basketball clinics and life skills lessons for youth, while also working with local schools, basketball clubs, and coaches to create infrastructure that systematically aligns with education, leadership and social responsibility.

Each student’s primary goal is to stay on track to be promoted to the next grade in school, and, ultimately, to graduate high school and matriculate to university.

LIVE, LEARN & PLAY

Overview Launched in 2014, and in partnership with the NBA and USAID, Live, Learn & Play (LLP) is a program dedicated to training coaches, developing sports infrastructure and using basketball to encourage citizenship amongst Senegalese youth. LLP currently works with more than 40 schools and basketball clubs in Dakar and Thies, and serves more than 8,000 students.

All coaches are trained in a comprehensive basketball / life skills curriculum that was co-developed by the NBA and SEED. Students receive weekly afterschool basketball programming and life skills lessons that use the basketball court as a teaching tool to promote positive values among Senegalese youth.

LLP also refurbishes and builds basketball courts at partner schools.

SEED SCHOLARS

Overview SEED Scholars provides career services and job placement support for SEED graduates around the world. With more than 100 graduates currently working or studying in 16 countries, we support their continued growth and help them think beyond the basketball court.

Each summer, we host a student-athlete career services workshop for our graduates in NYC. The primary goal of this workshop is to help our students identify career paths, learn how to network, and secure a quality job.

We also pair our graduates with young professionals in the U.S. and Senegal to provide one-on-one professional development mentoring.

Remy Ndiaye SEED Academy Class of 2010 Remy Ndiaye is no stranger to new beginnings. Having grown up in Dakar (Senegal) Remy left his family at 15 to attend the SEED Academy boarding school. After spending three years at SEED, Remy earned a full scholarship to attend Lake Forest Academy in Chicago (U.S.) for his final two years of high school before matriculating to Dallas Baptist University (DBU).

After captaining the DBU basketball team and earning his diploma in 2014, Remy embarked upon perhaps his most unique new beginning yet — a return to Africa.

Remy was awarded a grant from Shooting Touch, an international NGO, to spend a year in Rwanda building basketball courts and developing youth basketball programs.

While certainly nervous about leaving his new beginning in America to return to the continent that raised him, Remy’s experience in Rwanda was nothing short of extraordinary.

I was both nervous and excited when I left for Rwanda. Coming from Senegal I didn’t think the transition would be difficult, but I quickly realized how much my life was about to change. Every time I looked in to our kids’ eyes I saw myself growing up in Senegal. The kids didn’t have much, but no matter what conditions they lived in, they never complained and worked extremely hard. Now that I am back in the U.S. I have made a commitment to never take anything for granted in this life. I am proud to be a SEED alum.

Upon finishing his Shooting Touch grant, Remy was accepted to Dallas Baptist’s Business School and is currently a graduate assistant coach for the basketball team while pursuing his MBA. Upon completing his degree, it is Remy’s dream to work for an NBA team while also developing youth basketball programs in Africa to give other young people the same opportunity he had.

Event Recap

All Star Brunch | New York

LLP Launch | Senegal

During the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend in NYC, SEED partnered with the Carmelo Anthony Foundation to host an exclusive brunch at ABC Kitchen. The event brought together celebrities, influencers and SEED supporters to discuss how their respective industries can be best leveraged to achieve positive social change. The event raised more than $50,000 to support undeserved youth in NYC and Senegal.

In December 2014, the NBA, USAID, Senegal Basketball Federation and SEED partnered to launch the new LLP school year. The two-day event featured a cocktail reception for public and private partners, and more than 1,200 youth and 51 coaches participated in basketball activities at Marius Ndiaye national stadium.

Hoop Forum | Senegal

Luol Deng Leadership Clinic & National Student-Athlete Day | Senegal

For the 14th consecutive year, SEED hosted the Hoop Forum, our annual 4-day event that brings together top NGOs, corporations and individuals that use sport as a tool for development across Africa. Guests enjoyed a balance of elite basketball camps, community give-back events, cultural activities and networking opportunities.

This year was our biggest Hoop Forum to date and included sponsors such as: NBA, AMSA, Contour Global and others.

This past July, SEED partnered with NBA Star and South Sudan native, Luol Deng, to launch the first Luol Deng Leadership Clinic. Luol, along with Masai Ujiri, President of the Toronto Raptors, ran a youth basketball clinic for 80 youth in Thies, Senegal, and also spoke to youth about their respective journeys from Africa to the United States. The event culminated with SEED as the first international partners of National Student-Athlete day. All SEED participants that earned a 3.0 GPA or higher received a certificate recognizing this honor.

Open Run | New York

SEED Vibes | New York

For the 2nd consecutive year, SEED teamed up with NYC-based non-profit, Assist NYC, to host an open basketball run at Chelsea Piers in NYC. More than 60 participants and former Syracuse Basketball stars such as Chris McCullough and Scoop Jardine helped raise $8,000 to directly support our programs in Senegal.

Our 2015 series of NYC pop-up events brought together more than 1,000 new supporters and helped raised over $5,000 for SEED programs.

SEED kicked o NBA All-Star weekend in February with a cocktail reception at the WHotel and finished with an exclusive Love & Basketball brunch with hosts Everyday People.

In September we partnered with hosts, The Arena and Skillshare, for a rooftop summer party that raised more than $3,000 for SEED programs.

SEED Summer Party | New York During the week of the NBA Draft (June 24th), SEED took over NYC for the 3rd consecutive year. This year, we hosted our annual Summer Party at Marquee, an exclusive NYC nightclub, and more than 300 guests helped us raise over $50,000 for SEED programming. Sponsors included UNICEF, NBA, Patron and others.

Honorees included DeSagana Diop (leadership award) and Meredith Waltzer (volunteer award).

This year, AMSA was an official sponsor of Hoop Forum, our annual event in Senegal that brings together the international basketball community to support SEED programs.

Since 2002, CNEPS has served as the primary programming location for SEED. CNEPS provides dorms, classrooms, gym, cyber cafe and dining hall for SEED programs.

This year, NBA Player, Boris Diaw, and his foundation, Babac’ards, joined the SEED team as the title partner of SEED Girls. Babac’ards provided cash support, product donation and Boris led a basketball camp this past summer in Senegal.

Since 2013, Doubleday & Cartwright is SEED’s official marketing partner and designs all SEED gear.

John Snow International Contour Global A new partner in 2015, Contour Global supported the construction of a new basketball court on our campus that allowed an additional 300 students participate in our programs weekly.

For the second consecutive year, John Snow International supported the implementation of Live, Learn & Play, and oversaw a comprehensive organizational capacity building process that will be completed in 2016.

Since 2014, LFA has supported the development and execution of our english language program in Senegal. Staff members from LFA have traveled to Senegal multiple times over the past two years to train our staff in LFA’s english language curriculum.

Since 2011, Peace Corps volunteers taught English language courses for SEED students. This past year, we formalized our partnership and welcomed 2 full-time Peace Corps employees that supported organizational capacity building and out english language department.
