The community ran wild over poor services de livery in Bophelong Extensions as there was no water or electricity.
Action speaks louder than words Lazarus Dithagiso
BOPHELONG. - ‘Action speaks louder than words’, and ‘after action, satisfaction’. These were the words from some angry residents after two days without electricity. As if that was not enough, residents went berserk when they realised that even their taps were dry. The protest took place in the late afternoon on Monday. The community said they pursued
a response from Ward Councillor Kedibone Maria Mahlatse by going to her home, to no avail. The angry residents said they wanted her to step down with immediate effect. “We elected her with the idea she would listen to our problems. She has failed us. Instead, Maria is useless. She is like a thorn in our flesh.” Residents alleged that, on several occasions, she had failed to call a public meeting: “Every time we need clarity, she is not available. What kind of a leader, is she?” Two hours after residents had barricaded
roads, there were suddenly lights in certain areas. They were hoping that water would soon start to run from taps, but this was not to be. Anger and frustration forced them back to the road. A few hours later there was water. The residents said they believed local government would always listen ‘by skin’: “We first have to go on a rampage before our demands are met.” During their protests, no police officials could be seen on the scene. Late in the even-
ing, the entire section had water and electricity. Attempts to contact councillor Mahlatse were fruitless. ELM spokesperson Stanley Gaba said there was a high level of electricity-theft in Bophelong Extensions. “On the issue of water, people should understand that connection problems will always affect the smooth flow of water from taps. That does not mean residents should barricade the roads.”
