Unlicenced driver kills 9yearold Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - The 25-year-old driver of the white Polo that took the life of Xolani Moabi (9) of Zone 13 allegedly failed to produce a valid driver’s licence. The incident recently happened in Zone 11. According to eyewitnesses, Xolani had been walking with two friends and was running away from a dog when he ran into the road and was hit by the oncoming vehicle. The mother of the deceased, Motshabi Moabi, has expressed her anguish, saying the incident was sudden and very unexpected: “I was informed by a neighbour that my son had been in an accident. I rushed to the scene as fast as I could. When I got there I noticed that Xolani had been badly injured on the head.” Motshabi says she got the shock of her life when she heard that her son had died even before emergency personnel could get to the scene: “As a family, we are deeply saddened by the incident. My son was a sweet boy.” Sebokeng Cluster Police spokesperson Lieutenant Teboho Lephoto stated that the suspect was arrested on the scene. “The suspect is currently in police custody,” said Lephoto. On Monday, Lephoto confirmed that the suspect had appeared in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court and was released on bail. He urges parents to be vigilant and ensure that small children are always under adult supervision when they play in the street: “Parents must please ensure that they do not send kids to places where they would need to cross the road alone as this puts their lives in danger.” The suspect faces charges of culpable homicide and negligent driving. lebo.chaha@media24.com

PROMOTING EFFECTIVE PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP

Emergency personnel had the opportunity to pretend to clean up a chemical spill after a simulated traffic accident during the emergency display. On the left is an Emergency Services team member evaluating their efforts. Sasol conducted an emergency preparedness display on Wednesday, 29 September 2015, at the corner of Jan Haak and Henry roads in the Sasolburg industrial area, in cooperation with the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, Karbochem, Safripol, Omnia and Vaal Emergency Care. In Sasolburg, Sasol manufactures a number of chemical products some of which are potentially hazardous. Our spectrum of products includes waxes, solvents, ammonia, nitric acid, phenols, polyethylene, vinyl chloride monomer, polyvinyl chloride resins and chlor-alkali chemicals (including caustic soda solution, sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, calcium chloride, sodium cyanide, n-butanol and butyl acrylate). Managing the safety, health and environment (SHE) risks associated with these products and enhancing their SHE performance and sustainability throughout their lifecycle, forms a key part of Sasol’s commitment to ensure zero harm to people and safeguarding the environment. According to Jan Fourie, Sasolburg Operations Senior Manager Emergency Services, the purpose was not to conduct an emergency exercise, but rather to display the available resources that can be utilised in case of a potential chemical emergency. Emergency personnel had the opportunity to “don” i.e. to dress in Level A protective clothing and while play acting to seal a leaking valve at a staged accident.

It takes a team effort to don these protective suits.

We strive to deliver on our commitment to product stewardship through alignment with mechanisms established by the international chemical industry, such as the Responsible Care® Global Charter, the International Council of Chemical Associations Global Product Strategy and the International Cyanide Management Institute. Sasol formally recommitted to the Responsible Care® Global Charter in May 2015. This makes Sasol party to the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), a policy framework that commits members to the 2020 goal of using chemicals in such a way as to minimise significant adverse impacts on health and the environment. Sasol takes a risk-based, scientific and lifecycle oriented approach to managing our products. This is undertaken in partnership with our suppliers, customers and other stakeholders in the product value chain, including transport service providers. To ensure adherence to the above mentioned standards, emergency exercises are performed annually under controlled conditions to test responses to possible hazardous spillages or incidents – hence the display on 29 September 2015.

The decontamination process was also demonstrated.

Feedback and advice were given to participants as part of the activities.

RUST-TER-VAAL.- A unanimous and controversial decision was taken by the stakeholders forum and the Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC for Sport, Art, Recreation Shaka Radebe recently. The decision announced by Radebe temporarily bans residents from outside Rustter-Vaal from using the cemetery. This did not go down well with everyone. Forum chairperson Erling van Wyk said the agreement was reached recently in the presence of police and undertakers. The Forum said people not residing in what was formerly the tiny coloured area must stop burials until further notice. This follows the recent and tragic death of a woman when a bus she was travelling in was torched with a petrol bomb outside the cemetery. A suspect was also arrested in possession of an illegal firearm. Motsumi Phale of JMP Undertakers said there was nothing that made the Rustter-Vaal Cemetery supreme: “The land belongs to all who live in it, including the cemeteries. Our local municipality is actually punishing the undertakers, forgetting that the people suffering dearly are the families of the deceased.”

SEBOKENG. - Zone 7 residents were devestated when they found a young girl aged between 16 - 20 dead in a stream recently. The deceased was found by young boys in the stream that separates Zone 7 from Evaton. These young boys called for help and their parents rushed to the scene. Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased was strangled and might have been raped. This was revealed by the position of her legs and the fact that she was not wearing any underwear. Residents were not able to identify her, although a tattoo on her shoulder is the same that has been seen on a group of girls in the community. “This is really scary. That child was very young and she died like a dog. Hai! Police should find the culprits before this nonsense escalates and turns our area into a gangster’s paradise,” said a community member who asked to remain anonymous. Police have opened a case of murder and investigations are underway. “We are pleading with the community. If anyone knows something, please come forward to help us find the culprits and bring closure to the family,” said Evaton police spokesperson Sergeant Tshifiwa Mitileni.mathebula.mduduzi@media24.com

Congratulations Thembi Nhlapo, for this month’s winning story! My beautiful dream home. I dream about you, my lovely home, I saw you in my deepest sleep. You were like Jerusalem land of promise. On the land of Midvaal, I visualize this magnificent structure with bright blue and white paint. Every corner of house, where the rooms are situated, you have curves like a well-fed African woman.”MmaSebotsana” waka. The yard is green with beautiful spring flowers. You are like a palm tree that is ever green, ‘cause you drink from waters of the big Vaal River. The interior is white like the snow in winter. The furniture fits the neighbourhood of Beverly Hills where the group bracket is 30yrs. The neighbour is right for you, my home. With friendly neighbours, children playing freely in the streets without fear to be molested. We will eat, dance, sit outside at the veranda with my friends without fear of being robbed. You will be situated next to Vaal River, where a new development of schools, churches etc that even middle people will afford to buy houses. This is not just a dream but it will come forth, as God has promised children of Israel, land of milk and honey. You will be reality. My home. Thembi Nhlapo

Staying real is most important NewsEdi t or Comment s

“Oh yes I am free, oh yes I am a free spirit.” This was my particular reaction when someone was ‘informing’ me about what people are saying behind my back recently. The ‘gossip mongers,’ you know them ne? Since I have been picked up by the public radar, I have always

wanted to conform to the standards of what society expects of me, but lately I have come to realise that I could never satisfy all of them... never. There will always be that one that will always look at me with a different eye, perhaps that of envy. It is human nature to want to be accepted and ‘liked’, however I have found that when one does this, one literally ‘stops living.’ When I first started in the field of journalism some years ago, I’d agonise over whether people would think what I was doing was okay, desperately hope they’d like it, and sometimes imagine they didn’t. Now I don’t bother; it is

Letters

way too exhausting. It’s not that I assume people will like me or what I have to say. It is rather that I’ve learned to relax with just not knowing or to ponder on both positive and negative feedback. Some ‘problems’ in life, such as not really knowing for sure what others think of us, are not really meant to be solved. How people perceive you may have more to do with them than you anyway. They may even like or dislike you merely because you’ve triggered an association in their minds and reminded them of someone they liked (or didn’t like) from their past. That has nothing to do

Please send us your letters or comments to lerato.serero@mooivaalmedia.com or hand deliver them to our offices in Vanderbijlpark on the 1st floor, Cnr Df Malan and Attie Fourie Streets. We reserve the right to edit and/or shorten the letters.

Local entrepreneurs should benefit Kenneth Shupinyane president of Bokamoso Dream Investment Corporation writes: I was really appalled a few weeks ago when I learned that Arcelor Mittal SA was seeking protection and rescue from the government when it faced a challenge in the steel industry when their sales were massively slumped due to the cheap imported steel from China. I know that Arcelor Mittal employs thousands of people in South Africa and I am also aware that they sponsor mathematics and science projects.

Their commitment in local community and enterprise development where they operate, leaves much to be desired as their contribution is just a drop in an ocean compared to the wealth they are creating in their Sedibeng operations. Now that its business is in trouble, they see the need to be compliant with the B-BBEE Codes of good practice? I am of the view that the local entrepreneurs, where their operation takes place, should be the first ones to be prioritised and benefit from this deal.

with you. Trying to be someone you are not will always leave you feeling unfulfilled, however much you admire ‘that person.’ It’s curious that we tend to try and adopt the outward appearance or behaviour of people who themselves are comfortable being individualistic. To really copy them, we’d need to develop our own individuality and in that way, we’d seem to be less like them whilst actually being more like them - lately I have decided to be comfortable in my own skin; I have decided to be real. I took down his number and booked an appointment with him. He charged me only R100 to read my fortune and showed me my enemies in a mirror and I was shocked. He made them come and confess everything they had done to me as professed by Prophet Shiru. They caused me to break up with my husband and have lots of bad luck. They had done muthi that made my forehead swell and tokoloshe grow inside it. He then performed ritual to remove it and showed it to me and cured me after that. There’s no other way I can thank Prophet Shiru than telling the whole world about him. He helps with Love, luck, marriage, court cases, business, protection etc.

Eastern Cape is the boxing hub Mahlangu Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG.- Bongani “Wonderboy” Mahlangu recently defended his title in the Eastern Cape in an energetic fight of 12 intensive rounds. “It is easy to fly or get to the Eastern Cape, but is hard to get out. You fight against many obstacles there. You’re nobody in the Eastern Cape until you beat their own. You fight against a crowd. You fight against pressure. It’s like the world is against you and you need to find a way out,” said Mahlangu during a post-match interview with Sedibeng Ster Sport. The Boipatong boxer says he had to find a way to defend his junior featherweight championship title against Mfusi Maxhyi in or out of the Eastern Cape. As the rounds went by,

the pressure mounted every second. “I had to use points to get to the top. Each punch counted. Each second meant everything to me. I could not knock him down. He was a strong puncher. I had to get in and out to score,” said Mahlangu, who won on points. When asked about the boxing revival in South Africa he replied that he was excited to see boxing being resurrected: “Boxing is more a mental than a physical sport. I would love to see young boys and girls engage in it. It is great to see such a sport being brought back to the people,” explained Mahlangu.
