The attack comes amid rumours that there is serious tension amongst senior members within the regional executive committee with the regional elections planned for early next year.

When Sedibeng Ster asked Mthembu if he would be contesting for any major position in the coming regional elections he vehemently dismissed the allegations and said, “I’m the regional secretary of the ANC and I’m serving in my position. I’m not contesting for any other position.”

Meanwhile, over the weekend in Sharpeville, the branch general meeting (BGM) of the African National Congress (ANC) turned ugly in Ward 14 when some unruly ANC members poured faeces (mak#k#) over a silver BMW. The vehicle is said to belong to Jason Mkhwane. a representative deployed by the regional executive committee.

He was apparently deployed to assist in the smooth running of the branch election in Wthe ward. Mkhwane was blamed for allegedly attempting to swindle the votes. During the debacle some supporters were seen leaving the meeting without a word and returned with buckets full of faeces from nearby ‘Phuma’s Bethane’ informal settlement.

Residents say people wearing ANC T-shirts arrived and asked for their toilet buckets, which they returned later, empty. On the issue of the BGM, Mkhwane was firstly accused of allegedly saying there were about 179 people in attendance.

He is said to have given the chairperson a result of 106 votes and another of 88.

Mthembu says an internal investigation has been launched into the matter.

Nyaope, I don’t want you anymore

EVATON. - “We want to stop smoking and stealing from our neighborhood,” say self confessed drug addicts who need help to stop smoking. These young men are asking for help without judgement saying that they are tired of smoking the dangerous drug called ‘nyaope’.

A young man (18) Pule Motsweneng claims that he started smoking the drug a year ago and, ever since, has been stealing in order to feed his addiction. It appears that the addicts sit on a corner the whole day injecting themselves with the drug using one needle, risking infection with disease.

This drug has shattered their lives and they claim that they have no identity documents and can’t find employment. Even though they are young they look like old men and one of them was recently attacked and assaulted for apparently stealing steel.

They claim that if they can be put into a rehabilitation centre they will come back and give back to their communities.

“There is no time to bath or eat,” says Fankie Ndaba, who has been smoking nyaope and `dagga’ for six years. He says he does not recommend that young men and women try this drug because once becomes forever.

“I am tired of being assaulted for stealing.

I need help because I won’t be able to stop on my own,” says Ndaba.

‘Quick cash’ as they call it is stealing little items they can hide quickly, such as cell phones, irons, and kettles. These items are easily available to them as they go into people’s houses and steal. Anyone who can offer them help can call Evaton CPF on 072 795 2379.

RDP house restored after fire

SHARPEVILLE. - The Tsotetsi family house in Tshepiso Phase 3 where the house recently burned down and a boy (5) Lehlonolo lost his life, will be rebuilt.

This comes after Tebello Mapike, who lives in the neighborhood, decided to help them pick up the pieces. Their RDP house was joined to a shack in order to make it big enough for the whole family. This was destroyed and they had to start all over again. A good Samaritan decided to replace the shack with bricks in order for the family to fit. He donated a two-plate stove, a fridge and electrical appliances. He also went as far as buying the fami-

ly’s Grade-10 learner Seabie Tsotetsi, who lost her clothes to the fire, school uniforms that will last her up to matric. Grandmother Mapaseka could not restrain tears of joy as she thanked Mapike for what he had done for her family. She says, “Even though Lehlonolo will never be seen again his spirit will live on in our hearts. What happened was sad but we have to go on. Tebello made everything easier for us because we can now see the light.

VEREENIGING. - Police alert the community to a viral scam that recently took Vereeniging by storm.

According to Police the elderly victim, a pensioner, was duped out of his money by a con artist who is widely thought of as a traditional healer.

The pensioner lost over R173 000 to this healer, who is at large. Apparently the old man gave R55 000 to the traditional healer to keep for him.

Captain Fikile Funda says, “The victim handed the money to the traditional healer as a first portion to save because he feared he might abuse it. In the end another R118 000 was produced, which led to the disappearance of the healer.”

Funda reports that the victim never saw the traditional healer again. His cellphone has been off ever since.

One shot, three arrested in heist Pinky Mofokeng

EVATON. - Three BAT trucks transporting cigarettes were recently hijacked and robbed on the corner of Elias and Chamberlane Streets in Evaton.

It is alleged that 10 armed men ambushed the vehicles in the morning.

They managed to get away with all the vehicles during the heist. As the suspects were busy offloading the trucks not far from where the hijacking had taken place, a police vehicle approached.

Police noticed what was going on. A chase ensued between Police and thugs and shots were fired. Four men were arrested on the scene due to swift reaction by Evaton Police.

One of the four suspects in custody was shot in the right knee and was taken to the Sebokeng Hospital for medical attention.

After a search was conducted by Police they managed to recover a black VW polo and a 1400 white Nissan bakkie the suspects were travelling in. Cell phones and three firearms were also recovered in the same area by sniffer dogs.

The suspected thugs did not get far with the vehicles and the cigarette cartons.

The suspects Police managed to apprehend are aged between 26 and 37.

Police spokesperson Tshifhiwa Mitileni confirms that four men were arrested and that seven

more are still at large. He says, “The Evaton police would like to thank the community for assisting us in the apprehension of these thugs.

“This shows that the community is fed up with the high rate crime in Evaton.”

VEREENIGING. - A culpable homicide case is being investigated by Police after a car and a truck were involved in a horrific crash that took the life of one person.

The crash happened at the intersection of Boy Louw and Houtkop Roads in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday. One person died on the scene and it was confirmed that it was the passenger in the white Polo VW. It is suspected that one of the vehicles had not complied with the rules of the road, the Polo driver apparently did not stop at the intersection.

The issue of victimisation and abuse of women is something that has been extensively discussed and I believe that a new direction should be taken on the subject. It is not that I am against the celebration of this day, August 9.

The fact I am raising here is that we have had enough of the present day woman who always like us to believe that she is still oppressed and neglected. Can’t she stand up for herself instead of waiting for Women’s month. The fact of the matter is that women

Happy Women’s Day are presently being given enough power, and this they abuse. August 9 is Women’s Day but what does it really mean? Is it a day when by some unspoken signal women are given their rightful place in society? I wish there was some way in which we could check how many young girls have given birth to illegitimate children, how many women have broken other families, how many women continue to spread slander about others and how many men have suffered in the whole process.

Are women such a downtrodden, subjugated, inferior class that they need a special day assigned to them so that people will remember they exist? Is this just a day for feminists to climb on to their soapboxes and roll out their worn-out speeches on women’s rights? It is meaningless to fix one day of the year as Women’s Day. SEDIBENG. Just over 70% of municipalities recently audited showed estimation in their financial statements that more than 10% of the outstanding debt owed to them would never be paid.

The recently released report by AuditorGeneral Kimi Makwetu shows that some communities refuse to pay for services as they perceive the municipality to be unresponsive to their concerns of service delivery.

“The poor economic climate and the increasing cost of services are also factors that contribute to non-payment.

“Some residents can simply no longer

afford to pay while others resist paying for any services,” says the report.

The report also makes mention that many municipalities have ineffective controls and processes to determine who owes money to them, to bill it correctly and collect the money.

According to the national treasury report, the debt owed to municipalities at the end of 2012-13 was R86,9 billion from the previous year. “Inadequate management, accounting and information systems that account for the revenue and debtors do not only affect the debt collection but also the ability to account correctly in financial statements,” says the report.

R40 million Boipatong youth monument stands idle Lerato Serero

BOIPATONG. Months after its construction the Boipatong Youth Monument is still incomplete and cannot be accessed by the community.

A site visit by the Democratic Alliance (DA) recently revealed numerous empty buildings with no sign of the promised youth centre or computer lab. The monument apparently costs R40 349 133.

DA spokesperson on Arts, Culture and Heritage, Kingsol Chabalala says that the Gauteng Arts, Culture and Heritage Department promised to use the erection of the monument to uplift and develop the community.

“I will be writing follow-up questions to the MEC to establish how many people are expected to be employed at the monument upon completion, when exactly the department ex-

pects the monument to open, if the department still plans to install a community centre and computer lab, and how exactly these will be used to benefit the community and how exactly the construction phase of this project has benefitted the community,” Chabalala says, adding that the monument, erected to honour an Apartheid youth uprising and subsequent massacre, cannot pay proper tribute to their sacrifice in such a state. He concluded by saying, “The proper way to honour those who gave their very lives for our freedom is to ensure that today’s generation has a better life. “The key to this is getting our youth working and into the economy. It is crucial that we use every opportunity, including the erection of this monument, to promote growth and development in our most vulnerable communities.”

To consolidate the improvement in learner achievement, already achieved by the province, and to further improve the quality of education from Grade R to Grade 12, the department will continue to implement CAPS and reach common understanding with teacher unions in the implementation of the Gauteng Primary Language and Mathematics Strategy (GPLMS) in primary schools and the Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP) in secondary schools. At the same time, we will focus on modernising public education and build an education system that can compete internationally, especially in maths, science and technology, and continue to support the development of the province. It is within this context that we have now taken a decision to ensure that 80% of our children in Gauteng should do proper mathematics by 2019,” Lusufi said.

SEDIBENG.- The 2014/15 budget of the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) will allocate R32.8 billion to the continuation of the government’s agenda of building a non-racial education system, where all learners have fair and equitable access to all public schools in the province, irrespective of race, colour or creed.

This was revealed by the MEC of Education, Panyaza Lusufi recently. The department’s total allocated budget has increased from the R29.3 billion made available in 2013/14. Lusufi says that the increase shows the government’s commitment to education as an apex priority. “Four per cent of the appropriated budget is from conditional grants. “The largest allocations for grants are for salaries at FET colleges and the national school nutrition programmes, with smaller grants for HIV and AIDS interventions, Dinaledi Schools and technical high schools,” said Lusufi. Seventyfive per cent of the budget will be spent on salaries of teachers and officials of the department leaving

SEDIBENG.- Tosaca in partnership with The Department of Energy, South Africa Weather Service and the Water Research Commission (WRC) held the Green Youth Indaba at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria last Thursday.

The Indaba was held under the theme, “Advancing Youth Interest in Green Economy and Sustainable Development.”

The objective of the Indaba was also to sensitise and empower young minds about the opportunities within the green economy and sustainable development.

The Indaba among others focused on four topics which are renewable energy, green technology, climate change and water conservation.

The Green Youth Indaba 2014 also brought together more than 300 youth green activists from universities, FET’s and young professionals across South Africa.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, one of the young people and a social activist from Palm Springs who attended the event, Tebello Rampo, says that young people need to be involved in issues that affect their future, such as those that were discussed at the Indaba.

Friends bid farewell to retired Captain Motaung

THE BARRAGE. - Senior Police officers, relatives and friends bade farewell to retired former Police officer Captain Noty Martha Motaung.

The 60-year-old Motaung served the police with loyalty, dedication and passion for 28 years. She appreciates the high honour she has received since joining the police in 1986. This mother of all functions was recently hosted at the Hippo Creek, Barrage smalholding.

“Thanks to the office of Sebokeng Cluster Commander, General Deliwe De Lange, and her Barrage Police station commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Malebo, for assigning some members of their office to grace the occasion in their place.

“I have enjoyed working in the police services. It was not an easy road to arrive at after such long period. I am going to miss you friends,” said Motaung.

Colonel Mereko, representative of the cluster commander, appealed to Motaung to rest and be active. Looking back, he said it was not a sweet journey to reach this destination. He reminded her of the dangerous areas they had all gone to during the riots at Sharpeville. “It was through Mercy that we survived, we all live by Mercy and we have to appreciate every single moment we manage to survive,” said Mereko..

The function was arranged by the Barrage Police officers with Colonel Maria Mazibuko and Sergeant Majola as masters-of-ceremony.

St Mary Magdeline Anglican Church opening Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Zone 17 residents joined in praise and worship at the St Mary Magdeline Anglican Church recently.

This was during the opening of the new building that has been long awaited. The church has been part of this community for years without a building.

Douglas Msothu shared the word of God with the masses who attended the service. Other branches were present to worship and praise God for this wonderful gift - a place of peace and prayer. Bishop Lee conducted a traditional ceremony in which he lit candles and loud praise was given unto Jesus and the church was on fire with song. Lee asked the congregation to look after their assets. “Make this place your treasure because your children will be part of this place and they

are the ones who will continue spreading the word of God to the masses,” he said. The unveiling of the building’s plaque was done after the service.

With the country celebrating Women’s Month, Shooting From The Hip also joins millions of South Africans to celebrate the success and achievement of women in sports in Sedibeng. As is the case every year Shooting From The Hip looks at the women who played a significant role in the development of sports in this region.

These women deserve special recognition because if it wasn’t for them, women’s sports would not be what it is today. I’m referring to women such as Grace Tshabala-Radebe, Rose ‘Pona’ Jijane, Nosi Xaba, Dudu Msane, Mapule Sonono Nteso,

Beauty Molise, Erin Tsotetsi, Montsheng Kola, to mention but a few.

These are women who disproved the stereotypical view that a sport like football was only for men. Some of them played sports or administered sports during the difficult times when women were told they had no role in sport. But they never gave up. At the time not many women were interested in football because of

would not be where it is today had it not been for their selfless commitment to make change. For example, women footballers and netballers play every weekend in this region at the various venues in Sedibeng.

Shooting From The Hip salutes you women and continue to improve the standard of women’s sports in this region, especially those still involved in the development of sport in this region. As for men, please let us give these women the responsibility to run sports beyond Women’s Month. Lastly Shooting From The Hip wishes all women a happy Women’s Month.

Each year this month-long programme to commemorate and celebrate women of Sedibeng is kick-started with a media launch by hosting media houses which will help cover and promote all events as listed here.

Safa Sedibeng Women’s League in full swing Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Vaal Milano Ladies FC tops the Safa Sedibeng Regional Women’s League.

This is after they beat the second-placed Elmagreen 6-1 in a one-sided game played at the Zone 3 Stadium over the weekend.

Milano Ladies FC are at the summit of the log with 24 points from eight games.

They are the only team that to date still has to taste defeat.

As things stand, this Sharpeville-based side is destined to be crowned league champion if their current performance is anything to go by. At one stage Elmagreen Ladies FC looked to be a threat to Vaal Milano Ladies, but they can blame themselves for the inconsistency of their performance.

Elmagreen Ladies FC is second on the log with 22 points from 10 games which seems to make it ‘mission impossible’ to win the league unless they start to collect maximum points.

It is early days as most of the teams remain with two games to round off their first round of the season.

The second round will test the character of those who challenge for the league championship.

Going Up Ladies FC are third on the log with 21 points from eight games.

The latter still have a chance to challenge for the league title if they can also start bagging maximum points.

National women’s boxing tourney Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - With August known as Women’s Month, Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM in conjunction with the South African National Amateur Boxing Association and Sedibeng Boxing Amateur Boxing Association will stage the National Women’s Boxing Tournament.

This much anticipated women’s boxing tournament is scheduled to take place at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Center in Zone 14, Sebokeng, on Saturday. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Emfuleni Sports organiser Thanduxolo Madikizela.

Madikizela told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the tournament forms part of celebrating Women’s Day and Women’s Month. He says only female boxers are invited to come and participate in this tournament adding that the initiative is also designed by the municipality and the Sedibeng Amateur Boxing Organisation to attract more females to the sport.

Madikizela says despite female boxers, there remains a serious need for females in the sport as far as administration and officiating and is concerned. All females, especially young girls who are interested in boxing, are invited to the tournament on Saturday.

Madikizela urges the Sedibeng community to come in numbers to pack the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Center to capacity on Saturday.

“For the next few weeks our focus will be on women’s sports in this region in honour of those women who have played a part in the development of sports here. The tournament is partly to acknowledge them for their role in our society. The tournament is dedicated to all of the women in Sedibeng. We are looking forward in anticipation to witness the mother of all battles come Saturday,” said Madikizela.

In conclusion, Madikizela said this doesn’t mean men are left out in this tournament. He says they are also welcome to come and support the initiative.
