SHARPEVILLE. - Noni Mokhethi (33) of Tshepiso Phase 4 and two of her children survived a fire that was set to kill them all recently.

This comes after her husband Jeremiah Tomokoane (37) allegedly attempted to kill the entire family by fire.

Mokhethi says, “My husband and I have three children. He left us three months ago to go and live at Joko-Tea squatter camp near Bophelong.

During this time we had been discussing the possibility of him coming back, but he told me that he was sick and did not want to hurt me or our kids.” According to Mokhethi Tomokoane recently came knocking on their door late at night with a bottle full of petrol. She refused to open the door and that was when he apparently kicked the door in and started pouring petrol on her, himself and all over the house, setting fire to everything. Mokhethi says she managed to push her way out of the house and screamed for help: “I started to scream, calling the neighbours for help because I knew that my youngest son would not wake up. My eldest was visiting a friend nearby and the one in the middle managed to climb out of the window.” Mokhethi’s brother had to go into the burning container to get his young niece out. The community managed to put out the fire but it was too late for severely burned Tomokoane as he died on arrival at Sebokeng Hospital.

Parolee arrested for the same crime Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - One of two housebreaking suspects was out on parole after serving a sentence - also for housebreaking.

He was supposed to only be released in 2019, but he is back in the court again for the same crime.

The suspect and his accomplice are facing charges of housebreaking, theft and possession of the stolen goods. They were arrested recently. It is alleged that the suspects were followed by a member of the public who suspected that they were up to no good. While they were followed, they were seen jumping the wall to a house in Burchell Street, Vander-

bijlpark. Police were alerted and rushed to the scene. Upon seeing the police the suspects tried to jump out of the yard but it was too late. The suspects were arrested on the scene.

The police asked the neighbour to call the owners of the house to come and see if anything was missing from their home.

Police communication officer Sergeant Gertrude Makhale said the owner confirmed and identified the goods that were found in possession of the suspects.

The suspects briefly appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court.

The matter was postponed for further investigation and for possible bail application.

Police looking for murder suspect SASOLBURG. – Zamdela Police are looking for a man that allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and would like the community’s help. They appeal to members of the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of the 39-year-old suspect in connection with a murder that took place in Snakepark, Zamdela.

On July 26 in the early hours of the morning, Mantwa Dorah Machedi (35) was shot with a firearm apparently by her boyfriend, Thabiso Simon Phali (39) in Snakepark, Zamdela. Machedi was shot five times in the head and upper body and died on the scene.

The suspect fled on foot and is still at large.

On July 29 a warrant for his arrest was issued at the Sasolburg Magistrates Court. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of Phali can contact Detective Sergeant Dean April of Zamdela Police on (016) 974 6031 or 079 779 4977.

Foreigners ambushed Hlubi Sitei

De-Deur.- A case of business robbery and murder has been opened by the De Deur Police following a recent robbery and murder that took place in Weilersfarm.

It is alleged that during the robbery one Somalian national was shot dead and one Ethiopian was left with a gun wound in his shoulder. This incident happened inside a tuck-shop in Weilersfarm house at approx-

imately 19:50. It is alleged that the suspects went into the shop with the pretence of purchasing something but ended up opening fire on the shop owners. They fled the scene with airtime and cash. The Ethiopian was taken to Helen Joseph Hospital.

The suspects are aged between 20 and 30.

Theft suspects mistakenly released Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - One of five suspects in a robbery case was apparently arrested without proper cause, while the other four were mistakenly released without being charged.

A tip-off by a police informant led to a foiled armed robbery in the Vereeniging CBD on August 15 (Sedibeng Ster 19-25 August), but all this effort and good work almost went to waste when all the arrested suspects were released.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Malaudzi of the Hawks told Sedibeng Ster that two of the suspects had since been arrested again. The other two are still at large.

Brigadier Mulaudzi said the acting head: Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, realised with shock that the suspects

had been released before they appeared in court. It appears that the team, which had done fantastic work in apprehending the suspects, for some reason did not follow through by ensuring that the suspects were charged and presented before court within 48 hours as required by law. He said the management of the Hawks views this as a serious matter and has ordered an internal investigation.

The suspects were originally arrested with four firearms and an R4 rifle in their possession. They were arrested on the corner of Beaconsfield and Edward Street on August 15. “We are working extremely hard to rectify this matter. We are confident justice will be served. The two suspects at large will be arrested and brought before the court,” says Ntlemeza.

Fire leaves woman of cloth destitute Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A fire consumed everything in a house, leaving pensioner Betty Mogotlong (73) and her grandson with only the clothes they were wearing.

Mother and woman of the cloth of the Faith Apostolic Mission Church of Christ led by Reverend Molefe, was left with only her church outfit.

The outfit was saved by a neighbour who managed to pull it out of a burning wardrobe.

With tears rolling down her cheeks, Mogotlong could not explain how the veldfire started on August 14 at Mullerstuine Plots in Vanderbijlpark: “I had just left the house around 13:30 and I had not gone far before I heard neighbours screaming as they rushed in the direction of my house.

“The fire came towards the house by means of a veldfire in tall, dry grass. It caught the shack before destroying the whole house.

The speed of the fire made me think of ‘vutha’ (fire sent by witchcraft). “The more we tried to control it, the more it strengthened.

“Water buckets were of no help. By the time Emfuleni Fire and Rescue arrived, everything had been burned to ashes.”

SEBOKENG. - Violence nearly erupted when employees of the Department of Correctional Services from Sun City Prison and the South African National Defence Force stood their ground.

This was when they were confronted by unruly members of the public who were denying them passage on the Golden Highway.

The employees disembarked the bus on which they were going home to confront the contentious community during service delivery protests.

The incident took place last week outside Extension 4, Evaton West near Palm Springs.

Members of the Public Order Police, Emfuleni Police and the Traffic Department had to calm down the residents.

The community was advised not to close the road as this has nothing to do with the government. This comes after

the violent community complained that they had been without electricity for the past few days. They said the Eskom transformer box burned.

Only a few households had electricity, they said.

Pointing next to his surgery, Dr Y E Mohammed, a dentist and others doing business around the CDB, say they cannot take this any more.

Apparently this has been going on for several years. “This is public indecency. We cannot keep our doors open for fresh air,” said Dr Mohammed. We equally pay rates and service to the Emfuleni Municipality for best services.

ANC Sedibeng MMC’s to be purged?

VEREENIGING. - Despite one member of the mayoral committee (MMC) seen leaving a meeting in tears recently, heads are still going to be rolling in the rumoured reshuffling of the Emfuleni Local Municipality and the Sedibeng District Municipality by the ANC Sedibeng Regional Executive Committee.

Reliable Sedibeng Ster sources indicate that the final announcement date for the reshuffling will be made at an urgent council sitting this week.

Everything has however been kept behind closed doors.

Some strong ANC supporters slammed the ‘soon to be made’ changes by the region as blatantly useless and with no substance.

member of ward 24 Themba Mnisi believes that the first head that must roll is that of ANC Sedibeng Chairperson Simon ‘Sy’ Mofokeng.

Mnisi said the whole ‘purging’ saga started after the regional conference in April. “The chairperson made it clear that no one is going to be affected by the changes.”

He said the councillors topping the list to lose their positions as rumoured are Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Gretha Hlongwane, Speaker Msebenzi Gqoloshe, Infrastructure MMC VM Godoli, Finance MMC Mabandla Ronyuza and Public Safety MMC Velly Mcera.

The boiling Mnisi alleges that these ‘chops’ and ‘changes’ have nothing to do with whether the MMC’s are capable or fit enough to handle the pressure. “We never had grudges at the regional conference.

“This thing of ‘deleting’ certain people who don’t support certain individuals, must come to an end.” The ANC should consider that Hlongwane and her lieutenants have families to look after.”

When asked for the latest new development, Pat Manana of the ANC said there were no new developments.

“After we were done with our own assessment, we handed everything to the provincial executive committee (PEC) of the ANC. Immediately after the final decision has been made, members of the media will be made aware,” said Manana.

BEDWORTH PARK. - Concerned residents staged a walk-out the moment the executive mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality spoke about the new Smart Meter System to be introduced.

Interrupting the mayor, the residents booed mayor Gretha Hlongwane at the event last Wednesday.

They allegedly accused and blamed her for not starting with the new system at the neighbouring areas of Sharpeville and or

Bophelong. A loud commotion of a song, “Sharpeville first, Sharpeville first,” was heard from the attendees.

The community wanted the municipality to introduce the Smart Meter Electricity and Smart Meter Water Reading system in Sharpeville first.

During the proceedings the mayor was served with a memorandum of grievances by the concerned residents.

Some of the ANC branch members complained that they were not informed about

the system. They blame the municipality for adopting the ‘Chinese system to kill’ the community.

Apparently landlords were behind the disruption of the meeting. They allegedly informed tenants that after the new system has been installed, they will increase tariffs.

The new Smart Meter Technology will affect everyone. Those not paying will receive very little water. The community failing to pay electricity will automatically be switched off.

In an exclusive interview, councillor Hlongwane told Sedibeng Ster that the meeting went well until a few hooligans interrupted the programme. The purpose of the meeting was to explain how the system will affect everyone.

She said the targeted areas are Bedworth Park, SE 7, Vereeniging, Zone 10 and 12 Sebokeng. “We must correct all the billing system. I have never said that only people from the suburbs must pay. All the residents of Emfuleni must start to pay for rates and services.”

The story that appears on our front page today of the man that allegedly tried to set his family on fire together with the one of the wanted man who allegedly killed his girlfriend (P3) are heart wrenching to say the least. Taking someone else’s life because you have a problem is despicable. No one has a right to take the life of another. I’m going to scream it from the rooftops and hope that you that are planning to follow suit, are listening. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that rightly make us feel vengeful. We find ourselves fantasising about exacting the ultimate penalty ourselves, without actually following through of course. Who is in a position to decide who deserves mercy and who deserves to be killed? Looking at my own

No one has a right! moral compass, I believe I can say ‘only God’. In the case of our cover story I believe ‘trouble’ was already written in bold letters when the couple separated and then later decided to ‘work things out.’ What was there to be worked out? Clearly the relationship had run its course and reached irreparable circumstances with the husband moving out?

When it’s over, it’s over accept and move on.

Losing a relationship is a loss, Yes, but Just know that there’s hope; a brighter tomorrow – and that radical acceptance can help you get there. The other party in this case should have just learned to admit that it is over. Midvaal hosts spelling bee A group of 40 learners from various primary schools recently took part in the spell­ ing bee held by the Department of Basic Education (Sedibeng East District) in part­ nership with Midvaal libraries.

MIDVAAL. -The Department of Basic Education (Sedibeng East District) in partnership with Midvaal libraries under Midvaal Local Municipality, recently held a spelling bee at the Meyerton Town Hall.

40 learners from primary schools around Midvaal took part in the competition, and each school was allowed to enter four grade 6 participants to represent them. Each learner was called on stage, and given a word, which they had to spell correctly within 30 seconds.

Midvaal Local Municipality’s media liaison officer, Aaliyah Dangor says, “Four learners, Swanique Pretorius (Unitas Park Primary School), Boikanyo Mohlamme (Meyerton Primary) Reitumetse Lebethe (De Deur Primary) and Ruth Thobeli (De Deur Primary) had the top scores in this round and will proceed to the district level.”

“The words which they had to spell in the final round included: palaeontologist, transmission, tuberculosis, aggression, and chaperone,” Dangor concludes.

The first of its kind Black Coffee parties Sotho ­ dictionary with Noordhoek MIDVAAL. - Thatelo Levy Phohlele, a resident of Midvaal, has just published a first-ofits-kind Sesotho dictionary.

The dictionary contains definitions of Sesotho words, and also provides an English translation of each word.

Phohlele began working on the “Bukantswe” Sesotho dictionary in 2009, and completed the task in August 2014.

He began working on the initiative as a part-time project, but in 2014 decided to focus on it as a main project.

Phohlele says that he did not start out with the intention of writing a dictionary, he just began to write down a collection of Sesotho words that he gathered from a Sesotho Bible.

He later began compiling words from nature, including categories like wild animals and plants, and during this process, he decided he could grow this project into a proper dic-

tionary.

The sources he used include the Bible, his parents, elders, and other Basotho people from the Free State and Lesotho, who still speak a pure form of Sesotho.

Phohlele belongs to the Inhlanganiso Writers Association, which is an NGO composed of writers based in the Vaal Triangle.

Inhlanganiso provided support to Phohlele through workshops, mentoring, motivation, meetings and writing assistance that they provide.

Midvaal Mayor Councillor Bongani Baloyi has pledged a donation towards covering the cost of printing 1000 copies, so that the residents of the Vaal and surrounds can start to purchase and benefit from these valuable dictionaries.

The dictionary contains about 170 pages and is a first edition of its kind. It was published by Thaleripho, and is available at the cost of R150.

These proceedings will be followed by mass gymnastics and netball- rugby-, hockey- and soccer games. You can indulge at the wonderful food stalls, buy memorabilia and lots of other stuff. SEDIBENG.- Celebrated South African gospel singer, Benjamin Dube is part of the illustrious line up of gospel performers collaborating for the much-anticipated sequel to Gospel Goes Classical: The Night of Classical Worship taking place at Carnival City in September.

Also on the bill for the gospel music spectacular in the Big Top Arena on September 26 are Rebecca Malope, Mahalia Buchanan, Ntokozo Mbambo and S’Fiso Ncwane. The show will also feature the Tshwane Gospel Choir and the JMI Orchestra, conducted by Dr Glenn Caldwell from the United States.

SEDIBENG.- Local traditional gospel singer Ntombi Yeko has made the Sedibeng region proud. This was at the Ingoma Awards that were recently held in Tshwane, Pretoria. The songster earlier this year pleaded with Sedibeng Ster readers to vote for her in this competition and she was not disappointed when she received recognition in the form of certificates in the categories of Best Promo Artist and Best Music Video. Yeko who currently has four albums under her belt wishes to thank her family, her vocalists, all the local radio stations, primary and secondary school pupils in the area, churches and the community members at large for the support that they have shown and continue to shower her with. “ God is great and I wish to thank all the people that have been behind me through and through and say that they should not tire to do so. This is for them and I promise them that more is yet to come and they should watch this space for great things,” the jubilant Yeko concludes.

EC for Education in Mpumalanga, Ms Regina Mhaule promised to award 20 bursaries to first year students in 2016 to study at our Secunda campus after a successful exhibition at the Sasol Techno X 2015.

The MEC said she was excited about the presence of VUT in Secunda as a site of delivery and about the various courses that we offer in the province of Mpumalanga. We will be working closely with her office to ensure that this becomes a reality next year.

South Africa’s largest career expo, Sasol Techno X, drew more than 21 000 learners this year. This annual event, usually held in Sasolburg, was showcased in Secunda in Mpumalanga for the very first time, allowing more learners to attend. The exhibition was held from 3-7 August 2015 and attracted visitors from seven provinces and learners from as far as Lesotho.

If learners plan well in advance for their future careers, becoming scientists, mathematicians and engineers is a real possibility.

The exhibition offers organisations such as Astronomy South Africa, Eskom, the South African Police Service and institutions of higher learning to exhibit.

he Social Justice and Transformation Unit held its inaugural VUT Gender Summit on 11 August 2015.

The summit was entitled “Patriarchy and Social Justice: The Agency Narratives of Public Universities in Women (Emancipation) Empowerment and Development.”

The event stemmed from the VUT Women’s Roundtable held earlier this year after which five VUT women were chosen to attend the HERS-SA Mini Academy.

The VUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal; Professor Irene Moutlana, who is also a proud HERS-SA alumni, was tasked with the official opening and welcome.

The keynote speaker of the day was Dr Sabie Surtee; Director HERS-SA. Her

speech was on the topic: Why Gender Equality Matters in Higher Education.

Before she could begin her presentation, she commented that she was extremely impressed with the transparency of Professor Moutlana’s opening which meant that a lot of what she had planned to say had already been stated: “This seldom occurs in the higher education circles,” she said.

Acting SRC President; Ms Beauty Mutheiwana related her own life experiences of how she overcame her adversity and turned it into triumph. Ms Andy Kawa; the Chairperson of the KwaneleEnuf trust played a video showing her past experiences which prompted her to become a motivational speaker and offer hope to others needing to break the silence.

SASOLBURG. - Four education departments from Lejwe Leputswa District (Welkom), Xharipi District (Bloemfontein), Motheo District (Bloemfontein) and Thabo Mofutsanyane (Qwaqwa) assembled at the Fezile Dabi Department of Education in Zamdela Multipurpose Centre on Saturday.

“The main aim of this event was to create a platform for the educators from these regions so that they could engage in sports,” said Karobo Wesssie from the organising committee.

The performances of the district offi-

cials were impressive, the event was intensive and all sporting codes were represented.

Soccer may have been the main attraction, but netball enticed many males as spectators.

Ladies soccer and tennis were also on the list of activities for the day.

Fezile Dabi District Director Vusimusi Chuta was very happy with the success of the day. He thanked the traffic officers, ambulance personnel, firefighters, police, the LOC and the department of education officials, for making this day possible.

“Thanks to the almighty Jehovah for making this day possible and a great success. We are humbled by the outcome of the event,”

said Chuta after the games before the hand-over of prizes to the outstanding achievers.

Chuta and other district officials handed out medals and trophies to outstanding districts. Men’s soccer gold medals were clinched by Motheo District. Motheo District ladies soccer team were also awarded gold medals. Silver medals went to Fezile Dabi who also redeemed themselves with gold in netball as silver was left for Thabo Mofutsanyane District.

Lejwe Leputswa District fought for gold in tennis and silver was clinched by Motheo District.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- VUT’s chances of booking their spot in the semifinals of the Varsity Football Cup went up in smoke when they recently suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wits University at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijpark.

It was a must-win game for the home side but the visitors had other ideas as they made life difficult for the hosts. However, the score board is not a true reflection of the game as the Wits’ Clever Boys created countless chance but failed to convert them into goals.

Wits looked more organised in all departments while the home side looked less convincing in front of goals and their defense was caught in sixes and sevens as soon as Wits won ball possession.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, VUT head coach Geelbooi ‘Goma Goma’ Masango believes that previous games took too much energy from his boys. He said playing too many games in a short space of time could be another reason for his team’s performance in yesterday’s game.

“I cannot fault my boys because they have done everything that they were supposed to. Wits however came here well prepared. Like I said in our previous interview, Wits is a quality side. I thought a draw could have been a fair result because at one stage we had the opportunity to score an equalizing goal but were denied by good goalkeeping,” he concluded.
